ZAKK WYLDE, DAVE MUSTAINE, JONATHAN DAVIS Remember DIMEBAG DARRELL - Dec. 10, 2004
Dimebag Darrell Abbott's friends and peers talked to Rolling Stone magazine about the thrash metal legend that was tragically murdered at a Columbus, Ohio nightclub Wednesday night (Dec. 8).

Scott Ian of ANTHRAX:

"He was larger than life. He used to call me 'the action figure' because of how I move around onstage, and I used to tell him he stepped right out of a comic book. He was just so full of energy and such a strong presence. [As a musician], he had everything — just his originality, the riffs he wrote, his tone and what he did with his guitar. He didn't sound like anybody before him, and nobody could come close to duplicating what he did. That's the best thing you could say about any musician . . . I'm still kind of stunned. It's hard for me to believe that this is how his life ended. I don't know if I'm ready to accept the fact that I'm not gonna go to see him play live and have him obnoxiously shoving drinks down my throat."

Dave Mustaine of MEGADETH:

"I knew him by wanting to play with him. We had PANTERA open for MEGADETH in the U.S. and in Europe. When you get to the level of guitar playing that I'm at and that he was at, the air is pretty thin up there . . . Darrell was a really gentle spirit and pretty easygoing guy. Society is looking at this and saying, 'This is heavy metal.' That's not heavy metal, that's a random act."

Zakk Wylde of OZZY OSBOURNE/BLACK LABEL SOCIETY:

"He was beyond beautiful. When he'd walk in the room, he'd light it up. Fuck the guitar playing — he's right up there with Eddie and Randy and Hendrix. All he wanted to do was make everyone happy. He was the ray of sunshine. Dime will never die ever — he's in my veins. He's sitting at God's tavern, having a cold one with Randy Rhoads and Hendrix. Dime was an original."

Jonathan Davis of KORN:

"In the Eighties, honestly, I was more into dance music, New Romantic music like DEPECHE MODE. 'Vulgar Display of Power' totally opened my eyes to a more traditional kind of metal. That made me go, 'I want to be in a band like this. This is the shit.' I really became a huge fan of PANTERA, especially with what Darrell did. I'll never forget that trademark fucking flying 'V' guitar of his and his crazy, dyed fucking goatee and insane, undeniable riffs that he wrote that have been copied I don't know how many fucking times. He was one of the last great, traditional metal guitarists of our day. He was just a legend. It seems like all the great guitar players get taken early.

"I remember when Fieldy took me my first PANTERA concert, back in '92, '93. We both started breaking out crying because it was so fucking insane, so intense. You just get goose bumps, how badass that shit is . . . I feel numb that that shit can even happen. The metal community is such a tight community, everyone is just feeling it. I feel so fucking bad for his brother because those two were inseparable. I could tell Darrell was so full of fucking life and such a cool guy — he was just the life of the party. He knew how to live life to its fullest, took everything in excess and just made life bigger than it is. The guy was so fucking cool."

Regardless of everyone's opinion of these people, it's very touching the way they reflect on Dime and the impact he's had on them. This is sadness beyond comprehension, uncomparable in the metal community. It really makes all the petty shit-talking seem hugely trivial. A loved human being was taken and that is somehing that really matters, not hate or quarrels.

Hate to say it, but it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. There are a lot of obsessed fans out there and security at a lot of these venues is less than stellar.

It will be interesting to see what kind of precautions bands will take now. There's only so much they can do. Will this give other idiots ideas on how they can get their 15 seconds of fame?

As for Mustaine's comment about the "air being really thin" up there.....he'd be a guitar tech for Rhoads or Hendrix at best, let alone a colleague.

[Diamond]

I have seen Him there
Master of Light, Master of the night
Master of all the things that shine

[Chorus:]
Oh I believe...
I believe in all that I have seen
And I have seen the Angel Of Light
I have seen the Angel Of Light... Lucifer

I have seen Him there
Deep down where the Devils dwell
Deep down in the darkest well

[Chorus]

[Solo: S]

I will make a second deal with the Prince Of Light
Never will break the Oath I gave that night

[Solo: D]

Shine in all your glory, shine your light on me

I have seen Him there
Deep down where the Devils dwell
Deep down in the darkest well

Somehow I doubt it though, the Crue seems to only care about Crue.

Damn,

It's two days later, and it isnt even slightly easier to come to the realization that Dime is gone....

But so long as I have the memories of all the great shows, killer tunes, he lives in my heart and all our hearts forever.

My favorite Dime memory is back in '92, when they were touring with Skid Row and played the DECC up in Duluth, MN. It was the perfect middle finger to hair metal once and for all when they hit the stage, blew the place apart, and they killed the crowd so completely that Bitch Boy Bach magically developed "throat problems" and Skid Row cancelled their headlining set. Afterwards I and a couple friends were hanging around the buses and Dime was just the coolest man on earth with us idiots, got a bunch of free stuff signed by all the band and even got some rolling papers! (we ran out earlier) Outside of a scant few musicians that I have met, none were or ever will be more personable than Dime, and that memory and the other ones of awesome shows put on by Pantera along with a great library of material, will keep Dime alive in my mind forever. The best tribute anyone involved in metal can do for Dime and the Abbott family is to live like Dime did, be cool to everyone, drink, be merry and play uncompromising original metal. The best measure of a man is not in his accomplishments, which were enormous for Dime, but in the estimation of a man by his peers, of which not one person so far has been able to say anything other than complimentary things about Dime. Given that day so long ago back in Duluth, I have no reason but to agree with all the wonderful things said about Dime. We'll love and miss you always Dime, and we all wish nothing but strength and perseverance to all the Abbott family and all the other loved ones who were a part of your life.

R.I.P. (keep those papers handy when I get there!)

Like most, I've seen Pantera over a dozen times and have had the luxuries of meeting them twice. Once in 94 at an instore and the last TIME in 96 here in Chicago with White Zombie at the Rosemont Horizon. I have pics with DIME, VINNIE BIG VAL and also THONGS TONGS BOBBY! As I got out of the shower getting ready for work on Thurs morning, I signed into AOL and saw something on the headline news that I couldn't Imagine in a millions years!! I felt like my heart was ripped out of my chest and was just stomped on relentlessly!! Some of the worst emotional pain that I've ever experienced! I know that alot has been said so I just want to wrap up by say that no matter how big or small, how famous you are, how poor or rich you are you don't know what life has in store for you. It's like the STUCK MOJO Song. NOT PROMISED TOMORROW!! There are no gurantees in life. So TRY, and I MEAN try to live everyday to it's fullest! Because you don't know what's instore for tomorrow!! ....The kind words about Dime from Dave are much appreciated and classy, but he kids himself by trying to slip in a claim that he is on Dime's level as a guitarist. He's not, and anyone who's slightly observant or knows anything about guitar playing knows this. That's not to diss Dave- He's a kickass metal rhythm player and played a major role in metal history, but Dime is simply superior as a player. Not only could the man hang with anyone on rhythm (check out "Rise" off of Vulgar if you need a quick reminder), but he could also play lead as well (and usually way better) than any big metal band's specific "lead guy". Dime= Any other "metal duo" put together and then some.....All of the big timers know this deep down and either accept it with proper respect of stay silent in envy. Not trying to be a dick, but all of this is just plain fact. R.I.P. Dimebag, no one will ever compare!

I haven't posted about this yet because I just...couldn't. I actually learned of this by logging onto Blabbermouth - and was stunned. What a horrible, horrible tragedy. I still don't know why I'm so...fucked up by this. Maybe it's because I was so into Pantera's music - and because Dime gave so selflessly of himself to make that music happen - it's like a friend getting gunned down. And it is fucked.

And in a post full of class statements, leave it to Mustaine to use Dime's death as a chance to boast about his limited ability. To utter the phrase "When you get to the level of guitar playing that I'm at...." in any setting is stupid enough - in this particular setting it's unforgivable.

There will never be another Dimebag Darrell - and there shouldn't be. Thank God we have his music and videos to give us the opportunity to not focus on his death, but to celebrate his too-short life.

RIP, Bro. Keep a Black Tooth Grin on ice for me...

No, it's usually compulsive-obsessive DISEASED people who cause shit like this, which is also the case here. And someone who's idea of enjoying a heavy metal music is to cry to it, doesn't seem much mentally healthy, either. Then again, JD was abused and sexually harrassed when he was about 4, so what do you expect?

Shit like this bastardizes Dime. Jonathan Davis remembers his flying V? I don't recall that being a signature guitar of Dime's. My point is this is a huge loss. I don't need Jonathan Davis and way too many others to use this as an opportunity to get their own names in th news. It's ecspecially bad when it's obvious you aren't very familiar with Dime. So enough. Juan Crocier, Fred Durst, Dave Mustaine and the rest of you keep your remarks short and have a little class in this moment. This isn't about you.

I mean, of course I and most other fans never knew the guy personally, but you really don't have to know him; his guitar playing was so fucking great, it just flows through your veins and gives you chills. I mean, I started listening to Metal when I was 14, and for 7 years, Pantera has fuckin turned me into a metal head, and their music wouldn't be even half of what it was if it wasn't for Dime! Sure, Vinnie can fuckin drum like a motherfucker, and Phil ain't too bad, but Dime fuckin made Pantera's sound stand out and be respected. I remember watching the Vulgar Video for the first time about 5 years ago. Dime was a fuckin party animal. He was having fun in every part of that damn movie, and seemed to love life so much, from smokin out to throwin back some black tooths and getting fuckin insane. The mindless fucker that did this is for sure getting ass-fucked by Satan himself in hell right now. Serves him right. He took the life of a legend, not to mention a great person. It makes you wanna fuckin break down and cry, no matter how fuckin tough and hard you are. He may have taken Dime's life, but one thing that can never be taken away is the legend that will forever live on. We all still have our Pantera CD's, our guitars, our amps, and our big ass fuckin stereos. Crank that shit, guys. So fuckin loud Dime can hear it from Heaven, so he'll know we're jammin for him. I agree to stop bashing other musicians who show their grieve. Personally I like to read stories about how they were related to this legend. I think it's stupid to even consider they are just telling that to get their name mentioned. If you don't like the person, fine, if you don't like their music, fine. To all who are interested there is a guest book on legacy.com that is in remembrance of Darrell Abbott.
Here is the link: http://legacy.com/Legacy.asp

I was 17 years old when I 1st had the honor of hearing Pantera, at a high school party in Durham, Connecticut. Out of nowhere this mezmorizing, undeniably brutal riff began blasting through the home stereo system. It was "By Demons Be Driven", and I was absolutley stunned and stopped in my tracks by what I was hearing!! As a matter of fact, I almost dropped my beer on the floor, ha,ha,ha! As I listened to the song unfold and all the band members layering their parts, It was at that very moment that I realized that I wanted to weild the power and passion through my guitar that Dime was able to transduce through his! From that day forward I vowed to myself that I will one day be able to write riffs that carried people like the ones that Dime wrote. Riffs like the ones in: "A New Level," "Becoming," "This Love," "Domination," "Slaughtered", ect.. I had the priviledge of meeting Dime once, and it will always be one of the most remembered days of my life. Darrell has given me a gift that very few people get in this world.... He gave me a vision!!! He opened the door for me to see and hear past the normalcy of most music, and for that I am forever greatful! Thank you for being the baddest motherfucker to ever play the guitar!!!!!!!!!!!
