QUEEN Guitar Legend: 'DIMEBAG Was An Innovative And Passionate Player' - Dec. 12, 2004
QUEEN guitar legend Brian May has posted the following message on his official web site, BrianMay.com:

"We are all gutted to hear of the senseless and tragic death of Dimebag Darrell, who was shot by a 'fan' who climbed on the stage at a show of his new band, DAMAGEPLAN. He was, of course, better known for his great playing in PANTERA.

"PANTERA were, I think, the first band that I and my son Jimmy both got equally excited about. It was Jimmy who first got me to see them. They were a great band, and Dimebag was an innovative and passionate player.

"Great musician. Terrible loss. My respects to him, to his family and friends. Also to those who were killed trying to save him and apprehend the gunman.

"RIP."

Just watching the Uranium show at Dime's house, what a cool guy. His house is a rock n' roll fans dream, he lived the dream all of us have and enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks Dimebag for just being here. I hope his wife is getting support in this hard time. I still have issues with Vinnie having had to see his brother die right in front of him. Damn. Stay strong Vinnie.

Brian May is one of my favourite all time guitarists and I am pleased to see him pay his tributes to Darrell. Its great to see that even the old masters of hard rock recognise his great talent.

man i hope Dimebag can see ll this from where ever he may be. He has everyone from Michel Branch to Brian May to Iscariah mourning his death. If this isnt the most beutiful time to be in the metal community i dont know what is. This tragedy has really brought the community together to remeber a special life that most of us not have had the pleasure of meeting personally but yet at the same time feel like we are connected with him through his music. Call this "Metal's 9/11" or "The Passion of Dimebag Darrel" or whatever you want to call it; it has made us percieve that life is short and can be taken away at any time. Live life, hopefully they put on a huge concert tour for Dimebag darel with the greatest heavy metal bands and we all can get pissed drunk and try to live life more and too the fullest.

RIP DIMEBAG DARRELL

The Media seems to be affraid to embrace our Metal hero but a class act like Brian May has nothing but kind words for DIME and that respect is fucking awesome in everyway....

I'd say Dime and Freddie are writting some kick ass shit.

I now have even more respect for Brian May after this. To have someone like him come out and speak out for Dime is awesome. I love the idea of a Dime tribute concert with everyone from Zakk Wylde, Mustaine, Metallica, Slayer, Jerry Cantrell, KISS (with Ace), Van Halen, Sabbath and Priest, Basically everyone who's awesome in the metal world. It would be unbelievable if it could happen.

I have to admit I show little hostility on this site, aside from a comment made about the band great white awhile back that Luca Brazi apparently got banned for. I just want to voice the total appreciation of everyones heartfelt thoughts on Darrell.
I wasnt huge on Damageplan, and even though I loved Pantera, I wasnt too sad to see the evolution of the members break them apart as some of the material was on the wane (no hate for this please) I think my major problem with Damage plan was the sheer aggresiveness of the band and the lack of thought in the lyrics. But watching the Headbangers ball last night realized that Darrel and Vinnie create great songs. All you blabbermouth people have shown class and respect in the horrible tradgedy that gives me the same state of mind as Mustaine. Good phrase that comes to mind is RATE DONT HATE. Abe Lincoln once said something that I try to use every day.

"I may not agree with what you say, but will defend to my death your right to say it"

Thanks all for not only showing heart and sympathy and kind of renewing my compassion level

Sonny

Although I'm not a "heavy" drinker, I was raising some shots to the tv last night when Cemetary Gates and Walk came on. Headbanger's Ball was a definate therapy for many of us metalheads. I'm jealous of those in heaven...we had Dime for 38 wonderful years..they have him for eternity. RIP Dimebag We love and miss you brother \m/

To all who are interested there is a guest book on legacy.com that is in remembrance of Darrell Abbott.
Here is the link: http://legacy.com/Legacy.asp

I was 17 years old when I 1st had the honor of hearing Pantera, at a high school party in Durham, Connecticut. Out of nowhere this mezmorizing, undeniably brutal riff began blasting through the home stereo system. It was "By Demons Be Driven", and I was absolutley stunned and stopped in my tracks by what I was hearing!! As a matter of fact, I almost dropped my beer on the floor, ha,ha,ha! As I listened to the song unfold and all the band members layering their parts, It was at that very moment that I realized that I wanted to weild the power and passion through my guitar that Dime was able to transduce through his! From that day forward I vowed to myself that I will one day be able to write riffs that carried people like the ones that Dime wrote. Riffs like the ones in: "A New Level," "Becoming," "This Love," "Domination," "Slaughtered", ect.. I had the priviledge of meeting Dime once, and it will always be one of the most remembered days of my life. Darrell has given me a gift that very few people get in this world.... He gave me a vision!!! He opened the door for me to see and hear past the normalcy of most music, and for that I am forever greatful! Thank you for being the baddest motherfucker to ever play the guitar!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe Johnson
