Update: PHILIP ANSELMO Barred From DIMEBAG's Funeral; JERRY CANTRELL Performs Acoustically - Dec. 14, 2004
BLABBERMOUTH.NET has confirmed that former PANTERA singer Philip Anselmo did NOT attend the the funeral of DAMAGEPLAN/ex-PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott — apparently because he was told that he was "not welcome" at any of the events honoring the late musician who was slain last week at a nightclub in Columbus, Ohio. Anselmo's former PANTERA/DOWN bandmate Rex Brown (bass) DID attend, as did a number of other high-profile musicians, such as Zakk Wylde (OZZY OSBOURNE, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY), Eddie Van Halen, Jerry Cantrell (ALICE IN CHAINS), Mike Inez (ALICE IN CHAINS, OZZY OSBOURNE), Jim Root (SLIPKNOT), Corey Taylor (SLIPKNOT), Paul Gray (SLIPKNOT), and Dino Cazares (ex-FEAR FACTORY).

Cantrell, Inez and DAMAGEPLAN singer Patrick Lachman reportedly performed acoustic versions of two ALICE IN CHAINS songs ("Brother" and "Got Me Wrong") at the funeral, while Eddie Van Halen gave a speech that included an impromptu playback of a phone message he had received from Abbott at some point before his death.

In a time of bereavement such as this, I can understand family harboring these feelings and not letting someone attend due to a feud, BUT you have to realize that besides all of the recent bickering, they were together in a band for close to 20 years, adn I am sure that Phil was like a brother to Dime and Vinnie. I am sure the grief that Phil is feeling is pretty wicked...I couldn't imagine this coming to an end without closure of some sorts. They have a right to choose if he was able to attend or not, but I can't help but feel as it was the wrong decision.

I'm sorry, but EVERYONE talks shit at one time, and I know that I have said about friends , or even my own brother, that they deserve to get a beat-down, but in teh end, everything is fine. There has to be something deeper.

This sounds like it was quite an event tonight, and I regret that I am not close enough to where I could attend. My heart goes out to everyone that surrounded Dime, even Phil. I couldn't imagine the pain that everyone is going through. At least we have the good memories and the good music and legacy that Dime left behind.

Rest in peace, Dime.

Who has the right to tell them what is right or wrong regarding their choice? Or what Dime would have wanted...Guaranteed no one here knew the man on such personal level as to be able to ascertain what his wishes were, or what is best for him, his family, or Phil, for that matter.

Truth is, this is not anyone's business but Dime's family. No matter how much Pantera, Dime, Vinnie, Damage Plan, SJR, or Phil means to you, its not really your business or right to pass such judgement.

What the hell can you really say about it?

You have to think about what you're all typing: 'Phil and Darrell were like brothers'. Yes, 'like'. They weren't actually brothers. Too much stuff was said, too many very low accusations made, and even though Darrell might be a forgiving soul, everyone has a limit. Everyone. And as close as they may have been, they haven't talked to each other for years, yet the mud-slinging continued up until just recently. Sometimes you just cannot go back. You should have expected, that maybe Philip would not be embraced in the welcoming, comforting arms of the Abbotts like the son returning home after leaving with anger, and returning in shame. You can only say so much before the levy breaks.

I take no pleasure in watching Phil Anselmo have to go through this, no matter what i've said about him in the past, but he's made his bed, and he now must unfortunately lay in it. I think he's really getting a full taste of both those feet of his, ankle deep. I wish it didn't have to happen, and i'm imagining the taste is terribly bitter. This event will be Phil's penultimate moment of reckoning, and representation of his truest character, and I slightly dread what the next days will bring.

Nobody here really has the right to say whether or not Phil should have been allowed to be there. I don't get why all these people are hoping it's not true. Just for a moment, take yourself back to a time when one of your loved ones died. Now imagine that somebody had said that your loved one "should be beaten severely" just days before his or her death. Would you want that person to attend the funeral? I sure as hell wouldn't want that asshole at the funeral. Especially when my loved one happened to be shot 5 times point blank in the head right in front of me.

Maybe some day Vinnie Paul and his family will forgive Phil for everything that he's said, but not less than a week after his brother gets shot to death. And it really must suck for the family to have a bunch of people on some message board telling them what the appropriate thing to do is.

I have a feeling they just didn't want Phil to "steal the show", you know? This is Dime's day.

I mean, think about it... Phil has said NOTHING to this point. Everyone is on the edge of their seat, waiting for Phil to surface and say SOMETHING about what happened and how he feels.

The family probably just didn't want that drama overshadowing a day that was supposed to be set aside to honor Dime.

Plus, they have no clue as to what his state is. Will he show up wasted? Will he embarrass himself, the family, Dime? They have no idea... so it's better to keep him away.

It may have everything or nothing to do with all the shit that's been shot back and forth, ya know?

It's also entirely possible he WAS at the private service, but it was leaked that he wasn't so that the focus remained on Dime, and not the resurfacing of Phil Anselmo.

Or maybe I've just watched too many Oliver Stone flicks.

Anyway, no matter what... this whole this sucks. I haven't been right for days. I can't even image what his family is going through. What a loss.

If this report on Phil's snubbing is true, Dime's family is being petty and very small in the grand scale of things.

You people have a lot of nerve thinking you know what the family should do. Just because you were/are a fan of Pantera doesn't give you the right to say who can or can't come to Dimebag's funeral. If they didn't want Phil to be there, then that's the way it is. Deal with it. Don't cry "this is bullshit!" when you really have nothing to do with the situation other than own a few Pantera albums. To me, it really doesn't seem all that heartless to not let Phil come to the funeral. They have every right to be bitter.

I think basically, everything is just too fucked up and too raw right now for the Abbott's and everyone close to Darrell to handle dealing with Phil. It was very very recently that Phil was saying some pretty harsh stuff towards Dime, and while I think everyone knows that you can't hold any of that stuff accountable for the tragedy that happened, it's still left everyone a bit sore.
Give it time, I think in the very near future, Vinnie will be ready to sit down and speak with Phil and clear the air. Dealing with Phil and getting everything straightened out between them would be heavy enough to deal with under normal circumstances, and right now, I'm sure Vinnie is barely coping with the situation at hand as it is. While I'm sure it pains Phil to not be wanted at the memorials, he is man enough to understand why and respect it.

Phil is the most arrogant, pompous, self-serving shit in metal. It's completely understandable that he was banned from attending the concert - Just imagine.. Phil, going up to the podium for a eulogy.. "Dimebag was a fucking PUSSY. I'll bet that guy killed him like a piece of fucking vapor..." and then would begin to shamelessly plug Superjoint Ritual, which sucks anyway.

Regarding some of the earlier posts, Phil would NEVER commit suicide. He's far too selfish and conceited; He most likely thinks "Well, the world of music isn't going to be the same if *I* weren't here, I need to CONTINUE my *AMAZING* band" ... and shamelessly plugs SJR to himself. So, no. No suicides for Phil. He would upset all his \m/ PHILCORE \m/ fans. End sarcasm.

It was only days before Dimebag was shot that Phil says in an interview that he could "kill" Dime. It really doesn't matter any more how sorry is. If Vinnie and the family don't want him there, you can only find one person who's to blame for that, and that's Phil himself. He simply cannot expect to redeem himself, after he talks about killing Dimebag in such a manner. He wasn't just calling someone a douchebag or an asshole, went far beyond that. "Revenge on top of revenge...my life moves in cycles. Beyond cycles" ... I suggest no one do me wrong. Things don't go so well for them. And i do not lift a finger"

"I have a devoted following that would do anything for me! anything that I say!"

Now.. Saying things like that.. That's just asking for trouble, really. Perhaps Mr. PHILCORE should've thought a bit before running his mouth. As James St. James himself said, "Once it's in print, it becomes true; So never, NEVER dish anybody in print."

Then again, I read that he hadn't had any contact with Dimebag for 3 years or so and he'd been talking a bunch of crap in the press so I guess I can understand where Dime's family was coming from. Hopefully the remaining former members of Pantera will be able to put all that negative stuff behind them. It's time for some healing!
Take care, Vinnie. R.I.P. Darrell.

why hate phil because darrell was shot? i read as many interviews w/ dime and vinnie talking shit on rex and phil because they didn't want to do pantera anymore.

how many of us can say that we've never said "so-&-so needs his ass kicked"? not one of us - so you can't pass judgment on phil.

we don't know them or their situation - i'm sure the deeper problems wouldn't be released to the media or the fans, it's none of our business.

It sucks Phil wasn't allowed to pay his respects, but I can see why. Think about it. Mum + Dad probably know Phil and have known him many years. And then in the lives of both their sons, they've seen Phil torment them. To them Phil was probably the thing that ruined Pantera and caused both Vinnie and Dime grief. I'm not saying they're right or wrong. But put yourself in their shoes. The last thing Phil did in their minds was cause their late son anguish, I can see why they'd have trouble letting him in. I do feel really bad for Phil though. But words cannot describe how bad he must feel.

With all the emotional pain that Vinnie has been subjected to, these past few days, it is understandable that he may not wish Phil to be present at the funeral. If seeing Phil at the fineral would bring the Abbott family additional pain, I can why they would make such a request.

I do, however, think Phil should have been allowed, at the PUBLIC memorial, to allow Phil some sort of closure.

My brother and father had been at odds for several years, and had made ammends just last Christmas, my father died (unexpectedly) in January. My brother was so relieved that they had the chance to speak, before it was too late.

I think Phil must be sorry that he was unable to make ammends, while he still had the opportunity, and regrets what has been said... pehaps it will make him more conscious of his words/actions, in the future. I can hope, can't I?

As to this heinous murder, I am still in shock. My birthday will no longer be a happy day.

R.I.P. Dime

My sincerest condolences to Vinnie, Rita, and the rest of the Abbott family.

This situation with Phil could be a major wakeup call for everyone.

Hopefully, the one Good thing to come out of all of this tragedy.
Will be for everyone else to look at this situation and say to themself:

"Man, Phil must going through some shit. Because of the guilt of what he did and said over the past 3 years and bitching about petty shit. I don't want to be in that situation. I'm going to reach out to the people I've been feuding with in my life and put the differences aside. So if something happens to them I won't be tormented with all of the would've, should've, could've for the rest of my life."

I'm currently dealing with this myself.
Since, this all happened I've been reflecting on situations in my life. Such as people I no longer talk to and have been kinda' feuding with for awhile now.

And, It's all over petty shit!!!

Maybe, We'll also see some bands that have broken up. End up reforming. Because of this.

I would like to see Max Cavalera and SEPULTURA put their differences aside and rejoin together. I could also think of a few others that I would like to see put the shit talking aside and get back together before it's too late.

Ya' Hear That!!
Axl, Slash, Duff, Izzy, Steven????

Phil, Dime, Vinnie and Rex stormed the World together. They acheived more together than any of us will ever experience and it all ends like this.

It's just Not right.
This is not the way PANTERA should've ended.
They were such an important band to so many people.

THIS IS A FUCKIN' TRAGEDY IN SO MANY WAYS!!!!

It's a tragedy for all of the friends, families and band members of PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN, Everyone that lost their life on December 8 in that club, The friends and families of the victims, Everyone that witnessed what happened and will have that memory tormenting them forever and The Loyal Diehard Fans of PANTERA.

We all lost something important to us on December 8 in Columbus, Ohio.
All because of one Psychopathic Piece of SHIT.

Here's what he really said---sounds like he wanted to kick Dime's ass just like you would kick your brother's ass for mouthin' off. Pretty mellow for Phil, if you ask me---but it's still hurtful to all involved, and I can totally understand why the Abbotts didn't want him at the memorial, and also why Phil hasn't made an apologetic statement yet---he knows how people would view that (fake, most likely).
Peace Dime...

"I think, more or less, it lies between Dimebag and I. There was never a point when he could not get drunk. Which was pretty much every day. And now I'm hearing it's worse than ever.
"He would attack me, vocally. And just knowing that he was so much smaller than me I could kill him like a fuckin' piece of vapor, you know, he would turn into vapour - his chin would, at least, if I fuckin' smacked it. And he knows that. The world should know that. So physically, of course, he deserves to be beaten severely."
"But of course, that's criminal and I won't do such a thing... Really, I just let him prattle on. I grew very tired of it very quickly, and whenever it came up, like it has come up today, I just chose to wish them the best of luck. And in all honesty I really wish that they would be men, which is very hard for them, figuring that they were living in their mother's house until they're 30 years old. In comparison, I was on the street by choice at the age of 15, living anywhere I could - but living, and successfully living, through my will."
.......
On Dimebag's implication in interviews that Anselmo has returned to heroin:
"What a stupid man. What a shallow, stupid man. How would he know what I do? And by the way, I've been fucking bone-sober for three and a half years now. Anybody who has seen me on stage, anybody who has seen the shape of my body and the size of my arms, and the fucking burning desire in my eyes, knows that I am fuckin'... I drink four beers and I have a buzz now. Gimme a break. I couldn't even say that in my twenties."
On the possibility of a PANTERA reunion:
"It would take a lot of soul-searching. It would take a lot of negotiation. And we'll see. In the end, it's what's most important to the fans.
"That's the last time I'm ever - you can put this in your article - this is the last time I am ever talking about PANTERA."
