EDDIE VAN HALEN, ZAKK WYLDE Deliver Tributes To DIMEBAG At Public Memorial
- Dec. 15, 2004
The Associated Press is reporting that guitarists Eddie Van Halen and Zakk Wylde delivered profanity-laced tributes at a public memorial service Tuesday night for slain heavy metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.
"I'm here for the same reason as everyone else, to give some love back...," Van Halen told the crowd of several thousand people.
"This guy was full of life. He lived and breathed rock 'n' roll," he said.
Abbott, 38, former guitarist for the band PANTERA, was shot to death last week in Columbus, Ohio, while performing with his new band, DAMAGEPLAN, at the Alrosa Villa nightclub.
Three others were killed before police shot and killed 25-year-old gunman Nathan Gale, described as an obsessed PANTERA fan.
The public memorial service followed a private funeral Tuesday that Abbott's friend Jerry Cantrell, a guitarist in the 1990s rock band ALICE IN CHAINS, described as "beautiful."
"Today's really been the start of the healing process," said Cantrell, who performed at the funeral and again at the public service.
Pictures of a grinning Abbott, his long hair hanging past his shoulders, covered three big screens. Strobe lights pierced through the darkness as speaker after speaker stepped to the stage, remembering how Abbott made playing the guitar look easy and how — as one friend put it — "he always looked at the glass as half full, figuratively and literally."
Van Halen shared the stage with guitarist Zakk Wylde, the two downing shots of liquor as they talked about their rock comrade.
"A whole part of my life is gone," said a red-eyed Wylde, telling the crowd he hadn't eaten in four days, instead relying on a "liquid diet."
Van Halen stuck his cell phone to the microphone and played a voice mail message that Abbott left for him after a concert where both performed.
An adjective that would not be allowed on network television figured heavily in the message, as Abbott described how much he had enjoyed the concert and getting "wasted" afterward.
"I just wanted to give you a ... call to tell you thank you so ... much, man, for the most awesome, uplifting, euphoric, spiritual rock 'n roll extravaganza ever," Abbott told Van Halen.
The crowd saved its loudest applause for Abbott's brother, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, who patted a life-sized cardboard cutout of his brother holding a guitar and encouraged fans as they chanted "Dimebag! Dimebag! Dimebag!"
Abbott, who attended Arlington High School and lived in nearby Dalworthington Gardens, had formed DAMAGEPLAN with his brother after they left PANTERA.
Vinnie Paul said his brother gave everything he had every night and "went down" doing what he loved.

COMMENT | What I would say if I could be there tonight instead of taking finals in L.A... posted by : SterileEyes 12/15/2004 1:17:58 AM
I have 5 finals this week that I should be studying for, but I feel like doing little else other than listen to Dime and scour the internet for more news about what happened. It's pathetic of me, I know, but then again what happened on Wednesday night is probably the most pathetic thing to happen in rock n' roll since John Lennon's murder. There are differences this time for me though. For one thing, I am alive this time to hear about what happened. Another thing, Dime was murdered doing what he (and I) love doing more than anything in the world: playing music onstage for people who appreciated it.
My singer Josh and I had the good fortune of seeing Dime play with Damageplan one last time this past March. Dime must have guzzled 15 shots during the set and he never missed a note. Zakk Wylde joined them onstage for a couple songs (and a dozen shots or so), and he climaxed his appearance by playing a 15 minute guitar lead/duel wth Dime. That is how I choose to remember Dimebag - rocking out with his best friend doing his two favorite things (getting wasted and playing guitar leads).
Here are a few more choice personal memories that I have of Dimebag starting when I was 13...
6/29/97: Ozzfest 1997 San Bernadino....Powerman 5000, Machine Head, Fear Factory, Type O Negative, PANTERA, Marilyn Manson, Ozzy, and Black Sabbath
11/14/97: Hollywood Palladium...Coal Chamber, Anthrax, and PANTERA
1/6/99: Great Western Forum...System of a Down, PANTERA, and Black Sabbath
9/2/00: Ozzfest 2000 San Bernadino...Black Label Society, P.O.D., Methods of Mayhem, Incubus, Static-X, Godsmack, PANTERA, and Ozzy
2/3/01: Real Steel Tour Universal Ampitheater....Soulfly, and PANTERA
7/19/01: Extreme Steel Tour Long Beach Arena...Static-X, Slayer, and PANTERA
3/5/04: Henry Fonda Theatre...Drowning Pool, Hatebreed, and DAMAGEPLAN
The thought that what happened on Wednesday night could have happened at any of the 7 shows where I was fortunate enough to see Dime perform is still haunting me. What really troubles me more than anything though is imagining (or being unable to imagine) the grief and pain his family and friends and especially his brother Vinnie are going through. Vinnie played onstage with his brother for 20 years and soared to incredible success only to see that happen right in front of him. Fuck how I feel, Dime's family and friends feel infinately worse I'm sure.
For me, my only sources of comfort right now are knowing that the killer Nathan Gale was sent to an early grave by a responding officer, and knowing that I am only one of millions who are currently putting Dime's family and friends in their heartfelt thoughts and prayers.
In closing I'll add a comment that Zakk Wylde gave to Rolling Stone earlier this week: "The bottom line is this - there's Eddie, there's Jimi, there's Randy, and there's Dimebag. Period." I'd throw Jimmy Page, Tom Morello, Toni Iommi, and Zakk in there for good measure as well. But the point is, Dimebag will ascend to legendary status in the books of everyone who hasn't already figured it out.
To Dimebag's killer, Nathan Gale, I offer a personal word of caution. When I finally pass on someday, I am going to approach the wardens in heaven for a special day pass to hell so that I can personally find your fat ass and shove one of Dimebag's trademark odd-shaped Washburn/Dean guitars directly up every single crevice your body has until you say you're sorry for what you did to my hero. In the meantime, I hope you are just as miserable and ugly in death as you were in life, and I hope you are rotting painfully down there, pussy.
You can kill the man, but you cannot kill the legend.
RIP "Dimebag" Darrell Lance Abbott

That's tear-inducing, really. My heart bleeds for the Abbotts, and Vinnie, especially. As aforementioned, had I been at the memorial and seen Vinnie.. I would've balled like a for year old. wearethelost, that IS a depressing thought.
He really did go down doing what he loved.. That was his life; he lived for music. And he will live forever in music history as one of the best fucking axe-wielders out there. Let us all raise a shot of CR.. To Dimebag.
I saw the majority of those shows sterile. Real steel was the shit. Those flames were kick ass on the metal logo backdrop. I'll miss the shows most of all.

He's my favorite dude in all of music, and everyone knows how much Dime idolized him... mad props for him coming out and paying tribute like he did. After all the shit slung at him all year, this proves that he's a good dude.
Props to everyone there last night... it's so awesome to see so many people honoring Dimebag. It just goes to show that beyond music, he was just an amazing, amazing human being, and that always speaks volumes in this industry.

This was not a funeral ... it was a public memorial. There's a difference. Read and comprehend ...
