TED NUGENT Calls BONO's Politics 'Embarrassing'

Conservative rocker Ted Nugent recently told Launch Radio Networks that he disagrees with U2 singer Bono about the Irish singer's campaign for Third World debt relief, as well as his support for total civilian disarmament. Asked what he would say to Bono in a conversation, Nugent replied, "I'm sure I would be civil, but I would bring those subjects up and go, 'Come on. Come on! What part am I missing here?' In Rwanda they have total disarmament. In the Sudan they have total disarmament. About 6,000 (people) died yesterday. Come on! It's unbelievable. It's the hippie, get high, drop out, as long as I feel good cult. It's just embarrassing."

Bono has really tried hard to stay away from partisan, left-right politics. He's about the only progressive rocker I can think of who has avoided criticizing Bush, for example. He's actually worked with Bush to try to get more aid for Africa, so he probably realizes that it would be pretty counterproductive to criticize him. Most other musicians just complain, but Bono actually gets shit done.
As for "total disarmament," Nuge doesn't know what he's talking about. In a lot of these third-world countries, weapons are rampant. I'm not saying that the violence is caused by gun ownership, but if Nuge thinks that they have some kind of effective gun control there, he's just wrong.
Finally, I would be more critical of Bono if he was neglecting the music, but the new U2 album is actually their best in many years, and possibly their most hard-rocking ever. I strongly suspect that their setlist for the upcoming tour will be weigned heavily in favor of their new album, which is an accomplishment for a band that's been around for going on 25 years.

He's a musician who feels strongly about a cause so he's trying to make his music make a difference. WHat in the hell is wrong with that? We're all lucky, we can afford to squabble about what is in the whole spectrum of things, pretty meaningless crap to most people and in the comfort of our own homes too, we dont have to worry much if at all about where the next meal is coming from or wether we'll be alive to eat it the next day or any of that stuff. Why the fuck should Bono or anyone for that matter get slammed by anyone else for trying to change that in whatever way they try and do it. If you dont like what you hear then just dont listen turn it off, turn over, read something else, surf a different site.

No, it's not that simple. Afghanistan has long been one of the best-armed countries in the world, but that did not save them from the Soviets, the Taliban, and numerous warlords. Ditto for Iraq. Countries like Turkey and Thailand have very high rates of personal gun ownership, but that did not save either country from numerous military coups in the 20th century. Latin America is another example--high rates of gun ownership have not protected them from military coups. Meanwhile, many of the world's most stable democracies have low rates of gun ownership.
Furthermore, let's imagine that the US government truly "went bad," and imposed a military coup. How are pistols and rifles and automatic weapons going to help us against the most powerful and high-tech military in the world? We could have a guerilla war, but in open combat, we'd be toast.
A military is necessary to maintain freedom, and armed force is sometimes necessary to gain freedom, but once democracy takes root, it must be maintained by CIVIL means, because no amount of guns is going to protect a free people from a modern military. I'm not pro-gun control, but a lot of the rhetoric from the gun-rights movement simple ignores reality. I remember, when I was living in Thailand, I explained to people the gun debate in the US (Thailand has very liberal gun laws, like the US) and they thought it was pretty naive that some Americans think that gun ownership can protect against military coups. The real power of American democracy is that we don't HAVE military coups, because we can resolve differences in other ways. Without that, guns would be little defense against jet-fighters, guided missles, and nuclear weapons.

Exactly. It is VERY unlikely to ever happen, because most US troops members were brought up in a democracy, and respect democracy. Again, it's the democratic culture, much more than the government fearing an armed populace, that keeps us free. I mean, if Bono adopted an underage girl, it would probably be to take CARE of her and HELP her, rather than bone her w/out getting busted, as Nuge did to that Hawaiian chick back in the 70's. Bono is a LIB and he has no moral values! The only real way to test how good and powerful the army is - is by fighting in the actual war.
I am sorry to say, that US army have a terrible results.
Also, the quality and power of weapons - USSR was equal if not superior up until the mid 80's.
Right now it's a bit different, but still...
Now, the only thing truly superior than any other big country in the world, is perhaps US's nuclear arsenal.
Precisely because of which I consider US to be a major force in the world.
And nuclear arsenal is the reason US is a free country still.

TO ANYONE THAT IS THINKING THE SITUATION IN IRAQ SHOWS THE U.S. IS NOT THE STRONGEST MILITARY IN THE WORLD - If we were not being as civil as we are over there this thing would have been over long ago. Do you know how easy it would be for us to roll right through there and obliterate everything and everyone in sight???? We couldn't do that ethically or morally and just imagine what the world would think of us then!!! The fact we are not being FULL ON aggressive over there is because we recognize that the vast majority of people over there actually wanted to have this new freedom (FACT) and are unfortunately in harms way. If you haven't noticed, the insurgents are killing scores of Iraqi citizens volunteering for police and military duty and government officials (and anyone else standing in the way). Thats why you hear about all the police station bombings and assassination threats over there. These freaks don't want to give up their warlord control. It would be much easier to steamroll our way through there but it just can't happen that way.

if everyone has paid back the original debts then why do we continue billions of dollars in foriegn aid every year? as for bono giving "some" of his money to charity that's nice but the guy makes millions so why not give it all to charity this tour and cd? no of coarse not he expects me the american tax payer to take care of for him. i'm sorry these people are starving but didn't live aid and all the other 80's music project raise millions to stop this problem? you can't help people who breed like rabbits and continue to kill each other like they do in africa. i don't care about thier culture or trying to help them anymore. just cut off all aid to them and let the chips fall where they may, maybe if they had to fend for themselves they might fix thier own problems, but then again they would be screaming for american handouts within days. fuck 'em all.
