Former PANTERA frontman Philip Anselmo's videotaped statement about the murder of bandmate "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, with whom he had feuded in the press in recent years, has been uploaded at the web site of Fuse's "Uranium". Watch the four-minute, 17-second clip at this location (Windows Media). A transcript of Anselmo's statement follows: "People want my reaction to what happened. "This is not about me. This is about Dimebag Darrell — purely Darrell. It's not about me or some motherfucking psycho that happened to destroy the most beautiful fucking person — one of my best friends in the world. "It was the heavy metal goddamn media that destroyed PANTERA. "This is about Darrell, my brother of 17 years, who... PANTERA's music changed people's lives, man. We weren't just some band. He was NOT just some guitar player. "I wanna say... Bless his family and all of his close friends. And I never got a chance to say goodbye in the right way, and it kills me. And I'm so sorry. I wish to God I could have gone to his funeral, but I have to respect his family's wishes, and they do not want me there. I believe I belong there, but I understand completely. "I'm so sorry to his bandmembers. I'm so sorry to the whole fucking world that loved Dimebag Darrell. Because let me tell you something: there was not one motherfucker like him. "I'm so sorry to his family and everyone else who was just senselessly killed in Columbus, Ohio. It's a town I love. That's a town I've played a hundred times, goddamn it. I love that town. This video shows the genuine, sincere remorse Phil felt for Dime... He did seem a little inebreated, but who wasnt for the first week or so after hearing of this.. Though I hate SJR and I think Phil is a fucking prick, I feel for him on this one.. I just hope he doesnt use this as an excuse to go back to using (heroin). He has supposedly been clean for a while... Lets hope so..

its not about the media. To blame the media for the break-up of Pantera is absurd.
Phil is grown man, as were Dime, as is Vinnie and Rex. All capable of maintaining their composer w/ the press, on stage, etc. If Phil said something stupid, he's responsible. Not the media, regardless of the questions asked. He could have responded 'no comment'.
Is he really trying to say now that he's merely a puppet for the press? And what of his onstage rants, etc...Is that also the responsibility of the media?
I don't believe he caused Dimebag's death, as some asert, but he is responsible for the things he has said, as are the rest of the band.

I wouldn't be suprised to soon see him go the way of Layne Staley and many others. His only chance at ever being cared about again was a Pantera reunion and now he knows he is fucked. Yeah where was the love back when he was talking all this shit... I feel for him in a way but it was his decision to quit showing up with Pantera. It takes two to tango. It's half Phils fault and Half the medias fault. I'm sure Phil said all the things he did, but I dont think the degree that he meant it to was as much as the media made it seem. If you guys say that you have never had a huge argument or a fued of some sort with a best friend then youre lying. Shit like that isnt uncommon and happens to everyone. The difference is that most of us are lucky enough to put it behind us and make amends for what happend. I believe Phil feels terrible for what happend and that he let something like that fued get to the point that it did. And I'm sure that tape is pretty sincere, besides the fact that hes wasted.

I think what Phil is trying to say is that the Media are the ones that pitted him against Darryl. Which doesn't suprise me at all. Media needs a good headline, or quote, to sell a magazine.
I remember once working fora band that was being interviewed by some magazine reporter ..... she was sitting there reading other quotes from "sources" dissing the band and trying to get a response out of the band. They weren't biting .... she kept going and going on with it .... even insinuating that the other band was "gonna beat them down the next time they saw them" ... and the band just laughed.
Feuds sell magazines, and in this case, it got Dimebag killed. Sad day indeed ....

He has apologised and I guess its up to everyone else individually if they accept it or not.

Any interview can be given in any context the editor wishes, especially if it's 'dirt' that can sell copies of whatever they sell.

I've experienced the "metal media" and the non-metal media from all sides for many years -- as an author, musician, journalist, etc.
Here I'm speaking as a humble magazine writer: Philip Anselmo plays the metal media like a viola. If he doesn't like the song it's playing today, maybe he should show a little humility for once and take a lesson.
The metal media is not accountable for the actions of a maladjusted ex-soldier with a Pantera fixation. Anselmo regrets his arrogant and ill-advised words of the past year? He should. He probably thought nothing of spouting off until he woke up with the sorriest media abuse hangover of his life.
On the other hand, I'm amazed at the outpouring of almost religious sentiment on Blabbermouth's pages since the shooting. This is usually the first forum to be blamed for malicious slander, yet in the past few weeks it's been an online shrine to the grief of everyone who made it through the 90s on a half-pint of Pantera and a prayer. Especially when Dimebag's death faded from newspapers after three days, Blabbermouth kept the condolences coming, and kept everyone in the loop. I bet the page view count doubled or tripled.
Metal media is our lifeline. I wouldn't have known about Pantera without reading about them in Metal Forces, Headbanger, and US Metal Report.
Phil: admit you were just talking shit about your army of followers. Blaming the messenger is one of oldest and weakest cop-outs in the book.
Instead of bowing out of the limelight, why don't you use it for something positive, like when you brought Necrophagia back from the dead?

Secondly, The filming and/or streaming quality of the video recorded statement isn't exactly the greatest of quality. Fuck, you can't even see Philip's eyeballs - Yes, you might be able to make out some facial expressions and hear him talk - that's it. Who are you to say that he is shedding fake tears and putting on a show for the media?
Again, I think it is you Phil Haters that feel like such assholes deep down inside after hearing Philip's statement that you are too embarassed to admit it, so you continue to bah and hate on Phil and everything he does to stuff your shitty feelings.

when a band breaks up for WHATEVER reason there IS a lot of resentment & a lot of other bad feelings. Of course no one EVER expected something like this to happen in a million years. REGUARDLESS of the shit talking & bad feelings, I know there was plenty of love. It's a shame the people here can't realize this was one of the heaviest bands ever & these people do NOT spend a lot of time with therapists & counselors, etc. Their release IS the music they write & create, but when serious shit like this goes down people expect them to have acted like the accountants they picked on in high school or whatever.

After I LAUGHED at your response to my post, and your attempts at trying to be clever, it seems that you are in need for a pair of glasses. He has looked into the camera several times. I have watched this segment/clip 5 times in different views to see if he looks into the camera, and he does indeed look into the camera.
I've been reading several posts on here, and several Philip Anselmo-related messageboards, and hell - even the Dimebag Darrell tribute message boards - several people are defending Phil.
Phil was not trying to blame anybody else for his problems. At which point of this video clip does he mention any of his personal life affairs? He kept the comments strictly related to the fact that he never got to say goodbye to DBD in the right way, and that it killed him...
Wow, you really make it out to be like Phil is the only "Smack-addicted" rock singer out there today. I'd venture to say that 9 out of 10 rock singers have been addicted to smack at some point in their lives.
I am really interested in what bands you listen to, because I bet half of them shoot smack, too. But, I don't hear you calling them a bunch of "washed up, smacked out rock singers." You are only bashing on Phil because it is the "cool" and "popular" thing to do at the moment.

I think Phil's pretty fucked up over Dime's death. Sure, a lot of shit got slung in the press - but that's what happens when bands have bitter breakups. For Phil to blame the media, however, is pretty fucking stupid. The media had nothing to do with some psycho with a gun. Everyone seems to be looking for someone to hang the blame on - but I don't think there IS anyone to blame, except for the guy that did the shooting. That said, I'm sure Phil's pretty sincere in his expressions above - the guy's suffering - from loss, guilt - despite whatever happened between him and the Abbotts, I hope he recovers and carries on.

Over the past few months/years I've went from being a huge fan of Phil to wishing he'd just go away. But with that said, I really feel that he is sincere here. People argue and fight all the time, they say shit they dont mean, all thinking that one day you can say your sorry. Well it doesnt always work out like that, and this video is a product of that realization. For those of you that think that he is acting all twitchy and shit like that because he is high let me tell ya something. My brother got killed in a car accident in July, and I know I had more than one rambling with mannerisms probably pretty close to Phil's and I have never taken drugs in my life. So quit being so judgemental and move on, and forgive for Christ's sake.

this is sad. to me, he really looks pretty high in that video. nevertheless he is really hurt. dime's death does not take him away from drugs. but behind all that he seems to be broken about it.
give him a break. he's got so much to deal with right now. it is not his fault, he is not to blame.
whatever happened between the abbotts and him is not to judge by people who don't know. there must have been a reason he was not welcome at the funeral. but exactly that is what he is paying for right now. he is not to be forgiven by dime's family, whatever he did. but at least he shouldn't be jugded by us. that guy needs help and good vibes, whatever he did.
he is sorry, that counts.
there were so many people waiting for him to talk about it. now he did and obviously, he needed help by doing it OD. it is sad enough he had to do it like that. he was a broken man before and he must be even more destroyed now.

that guy needs time to recover and heal. there were so many good times with him and dime, leave those memories as good ones.

One things for sure fellas....that poor fuckin' dude is smashed. Y'know....ah....the video is hard to watch. Watch the video, look at the poster, look at the vid...at the poster...vid...po............vidster. He doesn't seem to be on anything much heavier than smoke and beer.... see those well rounded cheeks? Anyway, there are three parties who have a hand in this, Phil, who figured he had to uphold his image by issuing unnecessary statements on one side. You got the Abbott boys on the other side doing the same thing though not seeming very harsh on the other. Then there's the media smack in the fuckin' middle. Strokin' hard and fast to this goddamn monstrosity of a soap opera while simultaneously creating it with the other. It's sick. An interview to me is just that....a fuckin' interview. I wasn't there so I didn't hear the guy say it. I will give video a bit more credibility, at least on this topic. I'm sure these guys know what they are getting into when an interview comes calling. But you can't be much of an inspiration to anyone if noone knows you're alive, eh? I'm sure Phil figured these interviews were his chance to try to let everyone know that he was still around. That he was the real fuckin' deal. He wanted to be that next John Osbourne. So he took a few swings when he should've just jabbed liked Dime and Vinnie supposedly did. It's the tabloid metal mags that pull this shit....been doin' it since God knows when, exploded the the 80's hair bands though. It's the same on TV. Main two contenders...CNN Liberals and Fox News Conservatives spewing forth propaganda and lies in every breath. Reality TV.......nothing but smack talk from the first fuckin' episode. If Metallica split up it would be the same goddamn thing man. (I really wouldn't give a healthy shit if they did.) He said muthafuckin' she said muthafuckin' I said go ta hell. We're immersed in this shit like fries in oil. Phil has never had a reason to hate Dime or Vinnie or anyone else in the crew that I know of. He just wanted to go do his own thing it seems for reasons I'm still not clear about. But it's over now..........it's over now............it's over now. That hurts. Whether media outlets are deemed by you to be trustworthy or no, just remember.....your information is always secondhand. The images in our head of these interviews....sounds of their voices....hand gestures....as they say......whatever....... THE MAGAZINE FUCKING PRINTS. Nathan Gale thought he had finally realised, from the information he received... that Pantera was dead forever and he snapped. Can anyone here deny the success of Damageplan whether you like them or no? I can't, and I think that pissed Gale off. This is all just my theory and opinion, of course. I don't recall Rex having alot to say but the media had a fuckin' field day with everyone else. Again, about the video...., ya man Phil is definitley out of gear, but I have no doubts in my mind as to the sincerity of his grief. RIP DIME
BTW...I have been reinspired from all this to pick up my guitar again. Starting with a brand new rig on 1/1/05. Anyone else experience anything positive associated with this tragedy???

The media is a double edged sword. When they love you, you love them. When shits going down, it's a nice scape goat. But, you can't take your words BACK once they're out of your mouth. Phil ran his mouth, forever, and ever, and in the end, he couldn't swallow his pride, and smooth things out. He has a god complex, it's patently obvious.
It caused him to lose a lot. We are all only responsible for ourselves, and need to own up to shit when we're wrong. That's the adult thing, and Phil is a 13 year old at heart. Self centered, thinking the world revolves around him....it's pretty sad to me.
If you love someone so much, you'd find a way to work it out with your buddy.

Nobody really has the right to sit here and critique the honesty of anybody's grievance for a friend. Phil was one of the reasons pantera was able to break out in the first place. And I would be the first one to admit to have taken a cheap shot at Phil.But after a while it gets old.I never got involved with the Phil verses The Abbott Brothers bullshit because I liked Pantera & Down......Superjoint Ritual was ok and to be totally honest I have never listened to the Damageplan cd.I wanted to see them live before I formed an opinion.Unfortunely I wasn't able to see any of the Southern shows because of my work schedule or I was out of town for a major concert......and they never made it to Knoxville.So I will never know what I did miss....the last time I saw Vinny & Dimes was when they joined Disturbed on the main stage of Ozzfest 2003 for the song "Walk" at Alpine Valley and it looked like they was having a blast!
Yeah.......Blabbermouth is just as bad as the media when it comes to post shit to keep the feuds a going...and we ALL are just as guilty as the media if we fuel the hatred between muscians.In stead of telling Phil to look in the mirror maybe we need to do it ourselfs!

Wow - talk about learning a hard lesson be it really late in the show. I think Phil is sincere in his comments. I also think Phil made the statement because the fans and the crazed media (that he so damns) was asking for comment and speculation was growing from his silence.
That said, I have never been a Phil fan but I also have watched his temper and ego flare to unbelievable heights and although I don't care for him as a person, he was part of Pantera, which I loved and always will love. I think he feels genuine remorse.
Remorse for things he has foolishly said in the past and things that he never said to Darrell even though he should have. Phil, just like anyone who met and was around Darrell knew (whether he would admit it or not before now) that Dime was one in a million and you don't get a second chance to be touched by someone who is such an amazing person in so many ways. I give Phil credit for making a statement, and I give him credit for his heartfelt apology.
Now I'll reserve further opinion of him until I see what his next move is.

I think he's probably genuine in his grief so lets cut the guy some slack.
To an extent he's absolutely right about the media they blow things out of proportion and misquote people.
I can't say that what he's done since the demise of pantera was right or wrong. But I would say that the media had just as much to do with the downfall of pantera then the members of band did.

Phil I’ am a huge fan of your music. The band PANTERA changed my life, especially with my own music and veiws about this world so for that I thank you brother. All the press bullshit about Pantera I never took to heart the song war nerve taught me that. Media is nothing but hype. So yeah, it was dumb of Phil to talk shit in interviews, just as it was dumb for the magazines who provoked it. Yes, Phil didn't care about Pantera for three years or so. You think just for that he deserves this? I get in arguments and feuds with people close to me all the time, does that mean I shouldn't even be allowed to go to their funerals? The fact is Phil was with Pantera for over 15 years and the rest of the guys in the band were like brothers to him. Now, not only couldn't Phil go to Dime's funeral, but he never got to make amends and show how he really felt before he died...have any of you thought about how terrible of a situation that is? And you have the nerve to simply bash Phil for drug issues and some mistakes he made here and there? Shame on you all.

I have not read a single post since seeing this interview...
I have one (long) thing to say....
As a die hard Pantera fan since the begining, I shall and will give my respect to each and every member, regardless of side projects, my complete devotion, as I have always, and I stand beside Phil and love him as much as I have loved all the members of Pantera. Even though Ive not cared for what Phil has had to say the last few years, I can't help but feel like what he says there was completely genuine.
If this is the comments, that he gave what, a week after Dime was murdered, hell. Think about it. any time you would try to put into words how you feel, its going to be a convoluted mess. Its next to impossible to describe your feelings when you lose someone, anyone who has knows that for a fact. You search for a reason, something, someone to blame. He clearly blames himself, and to a lesser extent, the media. but he's in anguish there, I don't think you can make up how he is acting. The whole thing made me extraordinarily sad, to see his reaction.

I feel really bad for Phil man. Just because you have some harsh words toward someone you are angry with doesn't mean you dont love them or care about them. You can see in his face that he is truly sorry things happened the way they did. He never wanted Dime dead or beaten. Sometimes people say things they don't mean... just like you do sometimes. Phil and Darrell were friends for a long time and they would have been again someday. The media does spin things and probe people to say things they don't mean. The guys in Damageplan did it too but no one seems to remeber that. Dime called them Super Arm Dope Ritual among other things. Anyways, I'm sorry to see Phil is leaving the scene. Who can blame him though. I hope more than anything that Vinnie and Phil meet up and talk things out man. They really need each other at this point. At least thats my opinion. If they saw each other face to face everything would be fine.

I find it amazing how people treat everything they read as the gospel -- be it a magazine or the web, folks put too much stock into second and third-hand "information". Vinnie put it best in the Pantera Home Video (paraphrasing): "Unless you see or hear it for yourself, rumors and gossip are exactly that -- gossip."
Magazines are edited and interviews are rarely recorded -- authors typically rely on crib notes taken over the interview and use creative licence in describing the interview. Most often, when an interviewer asks one celebrity about another they goad them into trash-talking another by offering an alleged quote from another celebrity and ask them their thoughts on the subject. It's misleading and can bring a relationship down without ever having the two parties actually talking to each other. Misquoting, exploiting and destroying relationships without a single thought purely for their own agenda -- whatever story sells their publication and makes them money.
To make matters worse -- people with the mental capacity of a guppy post so much crap on newsgroups with the hopes of being cool in the eyes of people they will never meet. "Dude, I met Phil backstage and he was talking shit about this-that-and the other thing." The supposed racist comments made by Phil during a Pantera concert come to mind -- unfounded claims by mentally and socially inept fucktards who should have restricted access to the web.

I was at Donington in June and saw Damageplan. Dime thanked all the prople in pantera shirts and then he talked shit about how it wasnt he and VP who turned their backs on them. He also talked shit about phil in other interviews Ive seen in Metal Hammer like the "guitar gods" issue. Ive also heard reports of VP slagging off phil mentioning his drug habbits. So its not a one sided story by any stretch of the imagination. However I take all this that i read with a pinch of salt. Nobody knows what happened except those directly involved and their close friends and family. Show some respect for all of these people. Theyre only human afterall. We all make mistakes.

I've seen some reactions on other sites (haven't check the reactions overhere) of people syaing Phil's a hypocrit or something, but I do think he's serious here, he does miss dime, and I really believe he loved him like a bro! I just hope Phil won't do anything stupid, cuz he's clearly emotional, also a bit pissed, or so it seems, and he said we wouldn't see much of him for a long time...
He didn't seem very stable to me, but then again, not being allowed at your old friend's funeral, with whom you haven't been able to really sya goodbye is very, very, very hard, and it would hurt anyone!!!
I think he belongs there, just like he says in his statement...
And R.I.P. Dime, we'll miss you!!! F*ckin' Guitar god!!!
