I love Zakk but Jake is the man. Definately my hero when it comes to guitar playing. I thought badlands was a majorly badass band. Fucking loved them. Jake is a monster and unfortunately, he is the forgotten Ozzy guitarist. Never gets enough credit. WAsn't his fault Ozzy wanted to go gay with The Ultimate Sin. Although Killer of Giants is a monster. that music wasn't jake as we saw with Badlands.
As for Ray, from what I heard the dude just slept with one to many chicks. Not sure about the drug habit, but from all reports he definately wasn't gay.

But Jake will always be my fav. guitarist that Ozzy will ever have - Well, unless Slash joins the band and that will never happen.
Funny- cause everyone loves and agrees Jake is the man. This thread reminds me of a Dime thread= Meaning everyone likes and respects Jake(Just like Dime).
I bet Dime loved Jake as well;-)

Jake E. Lee is a badass guitarist, but run off and say he is better than Randy Rhoads is an overstatement. Sure, Randy's stuff with Ozzy may not being entirely jaw dropping, but take a listen to the solo from Laughing Gas off of the cd," Randy Rhoads: The Quiet Riot Years" Absolutely amazing.

I had a bootleg of an Ozzy show and he was doing a bunch of stuff from Ultimate Sin (I just assumed it was from that tour). The guy was pretty good though....hell, I think he trained at the same school as Randy.

Too bad Jake and Mandy Lion ( WWIII ) didnt finish their project . Im not saying Mandy Lion is Ray Gillen but a unique voice indeed.
Lizzy Borden has a new project called Starwood...really its "Lizzy Borden" with a new guitarist since Alex Nelson was killed this past summer in a car accident.
And back to Jake E. Lee.....I'll own the cd when it comes out!!!

Bernie Torme was with Ozzy for a few shows right after Randy died. Bernie is a great guitarist as well, but wasn't too comfortable playing with Ozzy. Ozzy then got Brad Gillis, but not after trying to get a more established guitarist like Gary Moore.
Randy Rhoads is the BEST!!!!!

I love Randy. No question. I just play in a style much more suited to Jake. I've always been more into playing and listening to guitarists like Jake with Badlands. Now, I love the Rhoads stuff. I can play it, I just can't write like that. Much more of a bluesier stylist. That's why I lean towards Jake and Zakk. But Rhoads was a freaking monster. But I do agree with Guitar World when they said that he had one of the worst tones ever. Very thin. Could you imagine what that guy would sound like with a better production or maybe a Boogie or 5150 amp? Holy Christ. His tone would have destroyed with that playing.
As for Dusk, I have that as well as a live Badlands disk from around that time. Good album but not as good as the first two. But it was nice to hear some Gillian after his death. That bastard could sing.
And yes, first day buyer here. Unfortunately, I doubt it is going to be very easy to find in America. It's hard to find stuff that is more obscure and doesn't get heavy promotion. Probably be an Amazon buy.

That first album was pretty good, from what I remember. I probably haven't heard it in 14 years, though. A while back I was searching for used copy, as its out of print, but people were charging ridiculous prices. Its too bad that they were overlooked. A good straight up hard rock band in the sea of hair metal.
I had heard that Ray Gillian got AIDS from a (female) groupie, too. Never heard anything about drugs or being gay, although the groupie thing could have been a cover story. He was a great singer.

Good freaking call. Zakk & Dime have killer tone. The guitars on Vulgar Display are freaking brutal as hell. I would love to get that damn sound. Listen to Walk and it just rips your head off.
There was some damn good sounds back in the day. Obviously that was the sound that Rhoads liked or the producer just didn't have a clue. But then again, his live sound was weak as well. So who knows. Maybe he spent so much time on playing, he forgot that the tone is part of what kills.

first 2 albums - Ozzy didn't have a big budget. The first album was like what - an 8 track recording? Or something in that category... This figures the problem with tone out.
Besides, in 1980/81/82 - there WAS no good tone. Even Sabbath didn't have "a good tone."
The production on the Ozzy albums with Randy sounds like he wanted to be showcased as the only guitar sound on the album, aka live. Not much overdubbing there. Not very produced - live sound.
If only Randy would have lived, by 1988 you'd be a witness to the most powerful guitar sound in metal coming out of his guitar. The guy had a wonder ears for sound.
But what sets him apart from most Metal guitarist - is that his touch is somewhat gentle, kind of fragile. That's his style - intelligence and dignity. He was not about "force".
If Dimebag had "power" - Randy had "mystique" and "darkness."

I agree with your assesment of Randy's playing, but i have to disagree about the tone question. Eddie had monster tone on the first album in 1978. So it was there. Alot of guitarist had great tone. So it was out there to be had.

I agree with others here that Jake is highly underrated, especially with Badlands. That has to be the single most underrated band of that era. They always reminded me of a throwback to the bands like Humble Pie. I think part of the problem was that their label gave them a decent amount of creative freedom but almost no push on their album releases. The only way I remember ever hearing when they came out with something new was by word of mouth.
I don't know what happened between Jake and Ozzy, but I remember reading some interviews back in the day, where if Jake even mentioned Ozzy's name at all, it usually wasn't good. And I don't think I've EVER heard Ozzy mention Jake's name since he left the band.
I guess it really doesn't matter where Ray Gillan got AIDS from but I always found it strange that it was kept under wraps. I don't think he was gay at all. I sort of always suspected it was from drug use. I'm not a doctor, but in my opinion it's much harder for a man to get HIV from a woman that vice-versa. If it were so easy for men to get it from women, we'd be without a hell of a lot of rock stars, celebrities and athletes. We've lost a few here and there, but they'd be dropping like flies because you know a majority of these guys don't wear condoms.

First off, what a pleasure to read a positive thread that isn't filled with immature wankers more interested in flaming each other than constructively commenting on news in a genre and community that they are supposedly passionate about and part of.
Also, to give my thumbs up to Randy's tone which (based on interviews I have read with him) he put a lot of work into perfecting given the technology of the time. I do think that it stands up as a blazing sound when the volume is cranked. Particularly on D.O.A.M
EVH's tone was similar on the first VH album, but probably comes across better due to them being totally blessed at that time and everything falling into place for a killer recording.
Have just ordered the RR bootleg DVD compilation so hope it rocks. Have never seen any live shit of his.

I'm excited that Jake is resurfacing, even if it is cover songs. He's picking some obscure shit like Savoy Brown (great dudes, hung out with them in 2001), etc. I am a huge Badlands fan, but I heard his solo album "A Fine Pink Mist" sucked, and he was putting together a project with some terrible singer. I'm glad to see he's working on a traditional rock cd with (probably) a real singer. Can't wait to hear this!

I was referring to the "good tone" that people were saying - Pantera had. If you look on it from that perspective - you will see, why I said - NO ONE had a "good tone" in those years, Sabbath included ( oh though Heaven & Hell is a superb album ) VH guitar sound is pretty tame, it's his playing that was blazing. Randy had no worse sound than VH in those years, at least to me.
Also, I'll stand by the information I know about making the first 2 albums by Ozzy. I might be incorrect, I wasn't there in a studio, but I have strong information regarding that. Not many overdubs were made. If you just listen to the songs carefully (rhythm for example), it's oh, maybe 1/2 tracks going at the same time. But if you have more profound info, please send me a link to some more or less official details on that, I really do want to know the truth. Thanks.
