MEGADETH: 'Anarchy' Request Denied By SEX PISTOLS Frontman - Dec. 30, 2004
According to Popbitch.com, SEX PISTOLS frontman Johnny Rotten (a.k.a John Lydon) has reportedly refused to give permission for the lyrics to the PISTOLS' "Anarchy in the U.K." to be used in the forthcoming new complete MEGADETH anthology.

Rotten was reportedly quoted as saying, "They got them wrong the first time round so there's no reason to believe they'll get them right this time." (MEGADETH covered the song on their 1988 album "So Far, So Good...So What", with famously incorrect lyrics — "...and other council tendencies" was sung as "...and other cunt-like tendencies.")

According to E-Paranoids.com, "Anarchy in the U.K." was the first single by the punk band the SEX PISTOLS in 1976, and is thus frequently considered to be the first punk single. Although it only reached number 38 on the U.K. pop charts, its long-term influence was substantial. The group's follow-up single, "God Save The Queen" reached number 2. Both songs later appeared on the album "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols".

The song's lyrics espouse a nihilistic, emotive, and violent concept of anarchy that does not correspond to the views of any major trend of anarchist philosophy. The lyrics can be interpreted as satirical, mocking not only the government but also directionless or purely fashionable rebellion.

.......the first proper punk single was The Damned's "New Rose". Methinks. Of course I might be wrong.

And if you want to talk about punk, I think The Ramones, The Stooges and The MC5 came first, but hey.

Anyway, as soon as Mustaine throws a lot of quid to Lydon, Lydon will oblige. Then again, they both deserve each other.

The Sex Pistols suck. They were a manufactured band, the Backstreet Boys of punk. The Ramones were the first punk band and the Sex Pistols cannot hold a candle to their farts.

The Pistols weren't "manufactured" like the Backstreet Boys. John Lydon is his own person, apparently you don't know shit about the background of the band. They broke up because you couldn't keep a leash on him, that had nothing to do with manufactured anything.

The Sex Pistols are fucking kings. The only thing contrived was Sid Vicious, he couldn't even play bass just wanted to do drugs and look cool, unfortunately he holds the bands legacy for no good reason but for being an idiot.

Learn your history first dumbass!

And everyone knows the Ramones were the kings of punk!

Lydon came on his own on Public Image Limited.

Motley Crue did a good cover of that song too, but John is right that Dave did ruin the lyrics to seem more PC to the metal crowd at the time. Megadeth's version of "Problems" is faaaar better.

Hey fellas, that Mustaine sucks we all know from the day he were kicked out from metallica.
Now about the very first punk band , that is very unsure, but the movement prior to Punk were the mods leaded by the Who demolishing guitars and drum sets. wich may coin The Who as the first punk band ever. also many years prior to Pistols there were MC5 kicking the gems and Iggy pop, either way all this crap is not true metal , and sorry guys I have a amon amarth cd to listen with no shitty covers.

ok .... now, i love the pistols! but i have to say that the saints were the first punk band, infact it was the saints (early 70's band from brisbane australia) that inspired malcom mclaron to put the sex pistols together.
also "God save the queen" went to number one in the british charts. for any fans who havnt seen it i suggest that you check out the "filth and the fury" documentry on the band very interesting and very entertaining.

You are incorrect....the pistols were manufactured...Read Lydon's autobiography "Rotten"...He only got the gig because he looked the part. Malcom something (I forget the name) put them together. More as a fashion movement then a musical one...I still enjoy their music though...

mustaine's lyrics to that song weren't even good. And the Anarchy in the UK cover is obviously the weakest song on SFSGSW, which proves that the Sex Pistols sucked. Want punk? Listen to the Ramones or the Clash.

read his book. The band was playing together before Malcolm came along so I don't consider that to be manufactured, plus considering since day one Malcolm had not even the slightest hold on their personalities, especially Lydon, that is was a monster he tried to control but couldn't.

I understand what you're saying but it isn't "manufactured" in the way people see bands put together today.

The clash were so short lived and untalented that its funny. talk about manufactured...the clash are it. Whats his godanm point ???? Is he just being a " punk " and an asshole or maybe he wants to make himself and his band feel more important . " I have the power and NO you may not use MY lyrics in your little anthology". I have read from other punk bands that have toured with the Sex Pistols and most of them said that they have BIG ROCK STAR EGOS ( Thats not very PUNK ) If anything the MEGADETH version probably helped the Sex Pistols . Metal fans were exposed to punk and probably many went out and bought " Anarchy in the UK " . I think Rotten has an ego and is just being a DICK plain and simple !!! any how I still like Sex Pistols and I still love MEGADETH \m/ !!

You can argue the whole "the beginning of PUNK" debate all day long. I don't care. Punk to me started with the New York Dolls. But it's different for everyone.

Very few bands have covered those mid 70's-early 80's punk songs effectively. Megadeth tried it 2 times and both times they sucked at it. As technical of a guitarist as Mustaine is, he could never be the guitarist that Steve Jones was. And whatever jack-off they had drumming for them could never be as powerful as Paul Cook. And Mustaines voice, forget it. His voice sucks on HIS songs, let alone cover songs that are far better than anything his shitty band has ever produced. Lydon's voice was not commercial, but it was powerful and snotty and fit that band perfectly.

Very few metal bands have effectively covered those early punk songs. Motorhead's "God Save The Queen" is great, and ofcourse Metallica's "Green Hell/Last Caress" was classic. Guns-n-Roses put out a whole album of mostly shitty covers of great punks songs. Their version of The Dead Boys "Aint It Fun" sucks.

Cheers to Lydon for pissing all over Mustaine.

Actually, today's concept of "anarchy" IS violent. All those protesters you see on the news are "anarchists".

Either way, it's the STUPIDEST concept EVER. It means "no government". I'm not the biggest backer of government, but you have to have SOME government!

Anarchy may work in theory, but only if you live in a society where everyone is cool and no one fucks with one another. Ever. If you have a city of 10 people, anarchy may work. For a month or so. Eventually it's going to fall apart because some asshole will ruin things. Now add another 10 people. And another 10 people. Anarchy will definitely not work. Add a million people. You're definitely going to have problems.

I hear Black Flag, Fear, Circle Jerks, and the Pistols, DK had a kind of Punkish attitude also.

All these arguments over what punk is are irrelevant to the subjective listener.

The ramones are cool, but not dirty and raw enough for punk IMO

Same goes for the Clash, someone got it right when they said all the jocks liked the clash, they were just not fast or filthy enough music wise for my tastes.
