Killer Says He Was Influenced By METALLICA Song
- Jan. 5, 2005
|
|
A New Jersey man who killed his mother and then stabbed an 11-year-old boy to death claimed that he was influenced by a METALLICA song about a boy who "lost my way this bloody day" when he committed the crime, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. Ronald Pituch, 29, pleaded guilty two months ago to striking his mother, Josephine, in the head with a 20-pound barbell inside the Huntington Circle home they shared on Oct. 17, 2002, according to The Courier-Post. He then left their home on his motorcycle and wandered into Kings Grant in neighboring Evesham, where he spotted 11-year-old Gregory Katsnelson riding his bike. Pituch admitted grabbing the boy, stabbing him and putting his body in a pond. Pituch then drove to the Medford police department and turned himself in. Pituch ( Photo: Ronald - left, boy's mother - right) told the court during his sentencing Tuesday (Jan. 4) that he thought the METALLICA song "Ronnie" had been directed at him. The song tells of a boy who "never laughed, never smiled, talked alone for miles and miles and miles." In the song, nothing happens in a quiet town until Ronnie pulls a gun, and the children "all fall down, down, down." Family members said Pituch had stopped taking his medication in the days before the killings. An insanity defense had been planned for the trial. Based on Pituch's statements to police after his arrest, Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi said he believed Pituch was sane. "He understood the wrongfulness of what he had done," Bernardi said after yesterday's proceeding. "Our concern was that he not be able to do this to anyone again." A day before the killings, Pituch called Nikki Roberts, an Evesham resident who years earlier was a classmate of his at Shawnee High School in Medford. He became angry and asked whether she was a METALLICA fan. "I don't know what all this [expletive] means," he told her. "I must be the son of Satan or something." It was not Pituch's first call to Roberts, and he also had tried to visit her. Pituch told the court yesterday that part of his delusion involved having Roberts as his "queen of paradise." Roberts, who yesterday declined to discuss Pituch's statement, said in an interview a month after the killings that she could not understand why he had contacted her. She wondered whether he would have killed her, too. "I have so many questions," she said at the time, "but I really just want to know why. What did he want with me?" Pituch's father, Thomas, did not attend the sentencing. "It was just too tough for him," said Cedric Edwards, Pituch's attorney. "The man lost his wife, and now he has lost his son, too." Pituch could have faced the death penalty because of Gregory Katsnelson's age. He avoided potential execution by waiving his insanity defense and pleading guilty to murder and aggravated assault. In return, prosecutors eliminated the capital charge. Pituch was sentenced to at least 45 1/2 years in prison. In addition to his prison sentence, Pituch was ordered by Superior Court Judge Marvin Schlosser to pay more than $14,000 to the state's Victims of Crime Compensation Board. Pituch is a paranoid schizophrenic who had been treated on and off since middle school, defense attorney Cedric Edwards said. Since his arrest, Pituch has fared well with medication, he added. A statement Pituch read in court Tuesday gave insight into the mental problems from which he suffered. "I believed I was possessed by the devil into thinking I was a god," said Pituch, reading softly from a crumpled piece of paper. "I know now that delusion is not true."

I'll say it again, especially since DIME was murdered. Someone has to take responsibility for these SCHIZO's. Just because they agree to take their medicine when they get out doesn't mean they will. I believe some DR is resposibile for DIMEs death and these poor victims in the above story. SOMEONE must be held accountable for making the choice to put these sicko's back out in population especially during these dark days when it seems every fruit cake is coming out of the closet.

I can feel you breathe I can feel your heart beat faster. Take me home tonight I don't want to let you go till you see the light Take me home tonight Listen honey Just like Ronnie sang Be my little baby. I get frightened in all this darkness I get nightmares I hate to sleep alone I need some company a guardian angel To keep me warm when the cold winds blow. No seriously though, Metallica makes people want to kill all the time, but mainly themselves for paying money for it. I'm surprised you all didn't know that.

There used to be a system that kept large state operated mental hospitals open and Schizophrenics would be kept and monitored. Then Reagan cut all the funding and places like Byberry and Rockvale closed their doors.

The sad fact is that this is our culture-blame eveyone and everything but yourself. Even if you are inspired by art to do something-YOU did it and it's you interpretation of what you feel and how you look at your world. No one does anything because of anyone else. The Press should be shaking their heads and not reporting this instead of promoting a way to make 'that evil music' look bad.

There are too many untreated schizophrenics and bipolars in California (thanks to Raegan) are untreated and left out on the streets, or given $500/month (which doesn't stretch far in SF) to live on their own. At least this man had his family's care and compassion to help him. Schizophrenics become obsessed, delusional, deliriously psychotic and lethally dangerous. I'm an emergency room registered nurse, I see it every day.
These people are getting hate, not help, and it's because our government is turning a blind eye on them.
I do believe they need to understand there are consequences to actions, or anyone would say "i was mentally ill" to get away with crime... but "off his meds" was key here, and dimebag may be alive today, touring through your town soon, if Nathan Gale had been on a government (local) conservetorship where he has no choice but to receive his medications, many have it monthly by injection so no one has to worry about them forgetting or underdosing.
We just ignore mental illness and hope it goes away, but 4% of every population is in need of treatment.

Well written post.
I can't get mad at this guy for blaming a metal song. He's fuckin' crazy. David Berkowitz was equally insane and blamed the neighbors dog for telling him to kill. I do, however, blame the media for reporting it in such a way that makes it sound like it's the music's fault. Metal, video games, the neighbors dog, something was eventually going to set this guy off.

Life in prison among the genpop is far more punishing- not to mention shorter. Oh, yeah...fuck this guy!

Every single citizen, or as many as possible contributing to society. Finding roles, giving them civic pride, giving them a reason to want to stay alive, give them a reason to feel wanted.
If everyone possible contributed, we would have much less problems with economy, medicare, disaster relief, infrastructure and general every day tolelrance, acceptance, cohesiveness.
Instead we have a million lawyers, corporate welfare, shit minimum wage jobs that don't help people with needs such as medical insurance.
Hate makes waste.

I think the article is alright, cause not once did it actually focus on blaming the music or metal music. It just stated what this wacko was blaming. Instead went on blaming his lack of meds. WHY??? Cause music is never to blame, as far as I know murder doesn't have a soundtrack. People are sick, and unfortunatly this is the shit that happens from time to time. Twice in the last month in fact ( RIP DIMEBAG) If this article makes you mad.. Here is something to make yourself feel better: GO DONATE to the red cross or whatever foundation is collecting for the victims in South East Asia those people need it the most, lets focus efforts on people that still have hope and stop wasting it on little fucks like this!!!!

How about Metallica doing a song about Ronnie, a boy who suffered from a psychiatric disorder and how the system refused to help, stating that the mentally ill must voluntarily submit themselves. How his mother tried in vain to get help for him, only to make herself sick with worry and fear.
How would it be if you would all be thankful that this horrible tragedy did not happen to you or your family. That would make a good song, wouldn't it? Then you would not be so shook up about your little song "Ronnie".
