OZZY OSBOURNE Says Ex-GUNS N' ROSES Guitarist BUCKETHEAD Auditioned For His Solo Band
- Jan. 5, 2005
|
|
|
Ozzy Osbourne recently spoke to Revolver magazine about his four-disc retrospective box set, "Prince of Darkness", and the upcoming 10th anniversary edition of his Ozzfest traveling festival, among other topics. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow:
Revolver: What made you decide to record a covers album at this point in your career?
Ozzy Osbourne: "For many years now, I've thought that it would be great to do some covers, old songs that mean something to me. So anyway, on the Ozzfest in 2003, I was talking to someone from the record company and I said that I've always wanted to do a covers album. So we started making a list of songs, and we narrowed it down. Then I forgot about it.
"Jumping a year forward, Sharon tells me about the box set. I thought, 'A box set of what?' The record company has already raped my back catalog! They can't do it anymore. There's already been 'The Best of Ozzy' and 'The Ozzman Cometh' and all these other fucking things, and they're all just the same fucking album with a different cover. So the box set originally started out as mainly a collection of rarities. Then the record company asked me if I was still into doing the covers album, and Sharon said that it would be something extra for the box set, so people are getting more than the same songs they've heard 50,000 times before."
Revolver: Do you think that by doing cover versions you might prompt people to say you're running out of ideas for your own solo material?
Ozzy Osbourne: "I'm not too bothered if it gets slagged. It's just giving people something different. You can download a lot of the other stuff on the box set from the Internet, anyway. The record company was going to release it with or without the covers album, and I felt embarrassed, to be honest. If I'd insisted on doing a full studio album for the box set, it probably wouldn't have come out until the end of next year. I've done this covers album as a stopgap so people can have something different. It's just me having a bit of fun with some songs that are already proven. There are gonna be two covers albums. There's the one on the box set, which will have some of the songs that will be on the other one, and some that won't."
Revolver: Ozzfest was a huge success again this year, but did you ever worry that your fans would feel excluded by the success of the TV show and your acceptance by the mainstream?
Ozzy Osbourne: "One of my big fears about the Ozzfest after the success of 'The Osbournes' was that I wondered if the audience would think I'm an asshole, or that people would come along expecting to see a Vegas cabaret act, because that's not what I'm about at all! After the accident, this Ozzfest was nowhere near as strenuous, and I did the best I could. But in the end it was great. I'm doing the 10th one next year. I'm stunned by that, to be honest."
Revolver: Will that be with BLACK SABBATH or your solo band?
Ozzy Osbourne: "This is what usually happens: Sharon will ask me whether I want to do it with my own band or SABBATH, and I'll say, 'I'll do it with SABBATH.' And she'll say, 'Are you sure?' I'll say, 'Yeah,' so she'll say, 'Okay, but if you do it with SABBATH then there'll be problems.' So I say, 'Okay, I'll do it with my own band.' And she'll say, 'Are you sure?' By this time, I'm not fucking sure either way! All I know is, I'll be there."
Revolver: If it's your solo band, what will the lineup be?
Ozzy Osbourne: "One big problem I've got is finding a good guitar player to write with. Nobody plays guitar anymore, they just make a noise. There ain't no fucking rock gods, and even the good guitarists are fucking nuts."
Revolver: What about Zakk Wylde?
Ozzy Osbourne: "He's fucking nuts! It depends on a lot of things. He'll probably be with me. I don't know at this point. I really want to find someone to write with, too."
Revolver: Have you held any auditions?
Ozzy Osbourne: "I tried out that Buckethead guy. I met with him and asked him to work with me but only if he got rid of the fucking bucket. So I came back a bit later and he's wearing this green fucking Martian's-hat thing. I said, 'Look, just be yourself!' He told me his name was Brian, so I said that's what I'd call him. He says, 'No one calls me Brian except my mother.' So I said, 'Pretend I'm your mum then!' I haven't even got out of the room and I'm already playing fucking mind games with the guy. What happens if one day he's gone and there's a note saying, 'I've been beamed up?' [Laughs] Don't get me wrong, he's a great player. He plays like a motherfucker!"

What's up with all these amazing shredders out there who are not jumping at genuine chances to get ther name and playing out there? Ozzy's band needs an injection of new blood and talent. Off the top of my head I can think of a bunch of guys who would be perfect for the gig, it's just up to them putting in the work, and trying to get in touch with the right people.
So: Al Pitrelli, Andy Martin, Borislav Mitic, Chris Broderick, Corbin King, David Chastain, George Bellas, George Lynch, Joe Stump, Mike Campese, Neal Bagaoka, Rob Balducci, Ron Jarzombek, Stephen Ross etc. I'm looking in your direction.

Sorry, but more than half of your list, oh though good players, are not capable (technically) to take the position of the rhytm/lead guitarist in Ozzy.
Young blood? 90% of these names are too old to be called that. And that's my other point.
I think - for Ozzy it's important how the person looks and his stage attitude besides being PERFECTLY note per note able to play Randy's stuff.
I know how it works, because Alex Skolnick told me.
He auditioned in the past.

It's too bad that these 2 aren't joining forces, because that would have been quite interesting! I'd much rather see Buckethead play with Ozzy than with the ridiculous Axl Rose, that's for sure!
Ozzy is the coolest, and you gotta' love his candid honesty! Buckethead is what he is, and if he won't take the bucket off for anyone, then so be it. He'll do what he wants, regardless of what people think. He's a great and innovative guitar player (maybe not everyone's style), but he's doing his own thing. You can't fault the guy for trying to maintain his mysterious image! If he took off the bucket, than he'd just be another regular looking dude who plays a mean guitar. The bucket is part of what makes him different, unique, and interesting. Who wants to see another ugly longhair anyway?
Ozzy probably doesn't want to feel upstaged by a guy wearing a bucket and a mask (which would get a lot of attention). I don't see why it's such a big deal anyway. Why is it so important to some people that he lose the bucket and mask to play onstage? It doesn't change anything! I think only people with big egos find it insulting or disturbing. I don't see anyone saying "o.k., but you gotta' lose the blue eyeshadow to play with me!" Give me a break-who the fuck really cares? SHOULDN'T IT BE about the music?...

Alex Skolnick would be a perfect guitarist. He shreds like a mother fucker, and atleast he would be playing metal again (jazz fusion...wtf). Rob Cannavino, ex-Overkill guitarist would also be great for Ozzy.
Just a thought...but how about Hank Sherman and Micheal Denner? I can't see them exactly playing RR stuff, but the music they and Ozzy would make would be incredible, I'm sure.

Skolnick actually played one show with Ozzy... He was making the guitar lines "better" and I guess Ozzy or Sharon didn't like that. I have no problem with him playing Fusion. He's seriously into it. And he seriously gave up on playing Metal.
Rob, I'm not sure what he's doing lately, still - you must remember that to play both rhytm and solos on the level of Rhoads/Wylde is incredibly difficult. Same goes for Shermann/Denner... both of whom I love, but I think - they are meant for Mercyful Fate.
I feel sad for Ozzy, I know how hard it is actually to find someone worthy for him.

Hey dude, when I said that Ozzy's band needs a shot of new blood I was not refering to the guys ages. I was refering to new composers with a different approach to playing than Zakk. I love Zakk's playing and I don't want to say anything mean about his playing but I would like to hear someone with more of the shredder vibe in there.
and here's my list again: Al Pitrelli, Andy Martin, Borislav Mitic, Chris Broderick, Corbin King, David Chastain (if you wre talking age he's certainly the eldest on the list here), George Bellas, George Lynch, Joe Stump, Mike Campese, Neal Bagaoka, Rob Balducci, Ron Jarzombek, Stephen Ross etc.
I also think all these players have both the lead and rhythm chops to certainly fill the spot, in fact some I would say are just too good like Ron Jarzombek.

You know what is amazing, Buckethead actually gave Ozzy his true first name or it appears he did. You can look all over the net and you wouldn't find anything on who this guy really is, not even a pic without that damn bucket or a real name. Quite amazing for a guy who has been around for awhile and no one has any grub on him.
On Zakk issue: I don't think its Ozzy wants him out its just that Ozzy doesn't like to how Zakk writes. If you dig around you can hear some of Zakk's version of what some of the songs on No More Tears was suppose to sound like. Way to heavy for Ozzy's taste I believe is the problem. Also they are good friends and I don't think Ozzy wants creative differences to come between them. I'm sure Zakk is still pissed about the Dave Grohl crap from the Ozzmois CD.
Either Ozzy is one funny motherfucker

Obviously you don't understand me.
I still have the same opinion - those guys are good on their own.
They don't have the chaps/style/technique to play with Ozzy.
Al Pitrelli? I played with the guy. He's good, not great. More towards the style of Slash. He's not Ozzy material.
The other 80% of your list are in the same league with Malmsteen. Neo-Classical shred - it's not the same as blues/rock 'n roll/metal in the style of Ozzy.
Many many famous guitarists tried out for Ozzy. All the "best" ones. None got the part.
AND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
None of the guys you've mentioned have the right attitude/image for the Ozzy gig!
You might have as well mentioned John Petrucci for the part.
What a sad joke.
I personally, don't know of any living young guitar player, who's as good as Wylde for the Ozzy Osbourne band.
Period.

How's about Marty Freidman? With Ozzy nowadays Marty would most likely be afforded plenty of 'artistic freedom' to compose a multitude of compositions with nearly unlimited styles. Without question Marty would definitely fall in line as another Ozzy guitarist who would litter every CD with memorable and creative solos. Hire the man, Ozzy!!

Yeah, there was a (young hight school aged) picture of Buckethead on metalsludge. He kinda' looked like Brian May (sort of). His real name is Brain Carroll and he's from California. First southern, then northern, & from what it seems, still northern (in the SF Bay area).
His manager frequents a head shop near where I live + his manager's office is/was on a main street out here. He's also got a booking agency in the Monterey area. It makes sense because he's always doing in stores and little club shows out here in San Jose and Santa Cruz, CA. I've also seen one of his friends/bodyguards coming out of a 7-11 down the street from my house. He's really just a regular dude-well, kind of...

I hope Zakk stays with Ozzy. If Zakk doesn't...I hope Ozzy goes out looking for a new axemen. I mean, new to the world. Ozzy's the best for looking for unknowns and making them guitar gods. Give some other 25 year old kid the chance.

Apparently, when Ozzy was getting ready to go into the studio to begin recording Ozzmosis Wylde showed up to the sessions with a ton of songs and Sharon and the label convinced Ozzy that it sounded "too much like BLS and way too heavy" and he needed to write more radio friendly material. A good portion of what Wylde wrote ended up on I think 1919 Eternal, if I remeber right...I dont fuckin get it, personally. Ozzy has a huge fan base in place for basically ever, it wouldnt kill him to let Zakk write some heavier shit, the last album was an embarrassment. Oh well, fuck it, BLS is touring soon, and I cannot wait for the Milwaukee show!

would be perfect playing-wise. Don't know about the personality aspect, though. One more thing- Zakk, while being a fine guitarist (and a pretty cool person) wasn't, isn't and never will be in Randy's league. Listen to any live recording w/Ozzy; where Zakk overuses pinch harmonics, Randy added quick lines that made things more dramatic. Randy was also much better than Zakk (or anyone else, for that matter) at transitioning from rhythm to lead and back. I'm not knocking Zakk; I'm just saying that Randy's damn near untouchable.
blessed be.

Zakk would never want stop playing with ozzy. Zakk has more respect for ozzy than anyone i have ever seen. Although he will never be a fraction of what randy was. randy was one of the people zakk looked up to. he would die trying to keep randy's spirit and guitar playing alive. Zakk wylde is one of my guitar heroes along with chuck and dime. Zakk is one of the greats and he is the only one that should play with ozzy. Fuck buckethead and also fuck richard christy and that howard stern bullshit. What a waste of fuckin talent. RIP Randy RIP Dime RIP Chuck PIP Gar RIP Paul

The fact is Ozzy had a meeting with M. Schenker at least twice, not too long ago. But it did not "work" whatsoever...
Personally, I would like to see and hear Jake with Ozzy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

[I personally, don't know of any living young guitar player, who's as good as Wylde for the Ozzy Osbourne band.]
You're just wrong. There are plenty, two off the top of my head: John Slater and Steve Wray both could write and play anything that Ozzy has done up to this point. They're great writers, great players and they have an old school sound to 'em, and attitude that would fit Ozzy perfectly.
I'd also like to point out that I AM a guitarist and that I DO know theory and I'm STILL not impressed with most of Ozzy's material. His stuff isn't that complicated, I can play all of those solos. Rhoades was cool, but Wylde is stupid and boring and not much of a soloist.

George Lynch. Of course my next pick would be CC Deville but he's still in that Poison band. Thats a joke folks so please don't waste your time responding. I actually think Ozzy should give up metal and join forces with Brian Setzer and embark on a swing/big band standards tour. Kick Ass!!!!

I understand you have an opinion on the topic but the just up and say that there are no guitarists out htere who can play on that level is silly. Players are way more advanced and technical than Randy, Jake and Zakk all over the play. And yes, my list was dominated by neo-classical players because I think Ozzy needs an injection of that since he's been missing it since Randy left us.
The guitarists I mentioned I have their records and have in many cases learned their songs and know that those levels of chops can handle Ozzy's material.
I would have included Michael Schenker on my original list but even I considered him too old. That's amazing to think Ozzy recently approachd him! I know they talked in the '80s but this is just great. Such a talented player with so much taste, knows when to blow your face off and knows when to chill. Everyone needs to get Michael Schenker's Adventures Of The Imagination CD!
Oh, and I've come up with 2 more names. Tome Hess and Mike Walsh of the band Hess. Think of them as the modern day Marty and Jason because that's the closest comparison I can make in my head of that insane stuff they play. It's bee a while since I've seen a band with 2 guitar players who are genuinly stars in their own right. http://www.hess.4t.com/

I know all the names, and I have all their albums too.
You are blinded by their technical skill, but it's not about the notes, as it is about what you play(your original riff) and how you play it.
It's all in the hand. The personal touch.
All the technique in the world would not save your ass if you don't have a distinctive "hand"...
Unfortunately 90% on your list don't have "a hand."
Yes, they can play technically superior stuff, but their "hand" is "sucky"...sure I still listen to them even though I think they are not a strong distinctive guitar players, but only for fun.
To me - it's not what you play (you can play sloppy) - but how you play it.
One note from Zakk "kills" all the technique from let's say - Joe Stump.
And, I think - having neo classical (Malmsteen style) sound in Ozzy is a bad idea. There are simply TOO MANY bands with that sound.
Ozzy stands out from the rest because of Zakk's sound/riff/style today which is inspired by Randy ( a very "sloppy" player actually, but million times better than Petrucci)... and I want it to stay that way.
I also love old and legendary players, and have all their albums, but I think it's you who are silly dreaming of the unwelcome mix of opposites. Everyone belongs where they are. Their own spot.
Original sound is the best.
Also: I am so tired of "millions" of guitarists saying they can play this and that. "I know Dream Theater/Malmsteen/Steve Vai note per note" -how many times did I hear that in my life? Everyone says that. But when they actually play it - it sounds like an amateurish s*it. Yeah, they hit most the notes. So what? They still sound like crap, because they don't have "a hand."
1 out of 10000 have "a hand" and not only in guitar - but every other instrument. That's what makes the musician stand out from the rest equally "able" and become successful.
I held a contest once - for the best guitarist (unsigned) to play and record "For The Love Of God" by Vai... people with a f*cking "list of education" came and recorded the song - LAME. Not one came even close to Vai even though they played all the notes.
I propose to you Omar, - learn 1 song by Ozzy's Zakk Wylde. Record it. Then - take a f*cking bootleg of live show of the same song by Zakk. Post them up on the net side by side - and let the people decide if you (or - anyone can do this "experiment") are capable.
And don't forget to let me know when you do, because I wanna hear that.
Thank you!

...I suggest that Ozzy could join forces with the english guitar player named KEVIN HEYBOURNE (Angel-Witch) if he is still alive.... he has always been a unique guitar player able to write a song but he has been too unlucky, a kind of loser... BUT he remains to only keeper of the old true Sabbath mood...

They are a good musical morons.
From their web-site (history): June 2002 - June 2003: Tom plans out the concept for Opus 3 and spends an entire year just to plan out the 12 song titles that will be on Opus 3! (That is NOT a misprint: 1 year to write the titles without composing a single musical note).
Song titles for the Opus 1 are:
Golden Colloseum
Through Space and Time
Lydian Speaks
Phoenix Rising
Modes of Expression
Exploration
Homage
On The Brink
Empire
Imperial
Palette of Shades
Queen of Me
These are the lamest titles. Are those guys retards?
I don't expect Opus 3 to have better titles.
Anyone who spends a year making up titles for the songs that don't even exist yet - is a true moron.
I don't care how good he plays - A MORON!!!

Buckethead would be a good fit for Ozzy Osbourne, if he did indeed lose the bucket and gimmick.
This was probably the most interesting thing I've heard out of Ozzy in a long time. Pretty funny one-liners in there.
Just like everyone else, I would definately love to see Alex Skolnich get the spot.

A major reason Zakk cant write with Ozzy is the fact he has another band and it would take up far too much time ?

I don't know man. I haven't heard any working guitarist capable.
I'd do the same thing he did when he found Zakk.
I'd do an audition on US level, or even on the International level. There must be few motherf*ckers out there who can rip.
I'm sure he'll find one. Oh I just heard this girl play - she might do just fine...

Come on guys, so what if he won't take off his mask or bucket. It's the identity he wants to portray. Just because you guys want to see what he really looks like. I've actually seen a picture from when he was 20.. trust me, it's nothing special. No need to resort to name calling or use the internet to expand your bitching. The guy's a robot when it comes to guitar, and that's all that's important.

"OZZMOSIS" was released in 1995, while Zakk's first BLS album did not appear until 1999's "SONIC BREW", four years later. Therefore, it is impossible to say that Ozzy thought his stuff at that time was "too BLS" for him. You must be thinking of the "DOWN TO EARTH" sessions from 2001, where Ozzy actually did say something to that effect. "1919 Eternal" was released the next year in 2002, using most of the material written for and rejected by Ozzy. By the way, I found the list zakk proposed for DTE a while back, and I can't figure how Zakk thought stuff like "Lords Of Destruction" would fit with Ozzy's sound anyway. I don't remember the other four songs he submitted to Ozzy, but if anyone is interested, I'll look it up and jot it down here. Later!
