Alrosa Villa Owner: DIMEBAG's Murderer Was 'On A Mission'
- Jan. 7, 2005

|
The Associated Press is reporting that the nightclub where a gunman killed four people, including former PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, last month will reopen, the owner says.
Rick Cautela told The Columbus Dispatch in Friday's editions that the Alrosa Villa would have stayed closed for good if not for thousands of supportive messages from fans and musicians.
"When they cranked up the new P.A. last night, I felt a little bit of my old self coming back," Cautela said.
His parents, Al and Rose Cautela, opened Alrosa Villa 31 years ago.
He and his brother and co-manager, Johnny Cautela, tended bar at the club, a top spot for central Ohio heavy metal fans that also has hosted hip hop and alternative music concerts. Rick Cautela said he's "still numb" about the Dec. 8 shooting.
Police and witnesses said Nathan Gale, 25, of Marysville, scaled the 8-foot patio fence to get inside and climbed on stage, where he shot DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott as he played, then killed a band security worker, club employee and fan before a police officer shot Gale in the face.
A benefit concert for the victims is set for Friday at a larger Columbus venue, and another next Friday at Alrosa.
Cautela told the newspaper he scheduled two more shows in January and is working to fill other spots because of the support from bands and customers.
"This has been my life for 31 years," he said. "I'm ready to do this with them if they want to do it with me. ... If they don't, I understand. I'll walk away and close the doors."
Cautela replaced the club's sound system — Gale was hiding between a tall speaker and monitor board holding a gun to a hostage's head when he was shot - and the carpet on the stage and in the nearby dressing room. On a stage riser he placed a black rug used by Abbott's brother and DAMAGEPLAN's drummer, Vinnie Paul Abbott, to mark where his drum kit should go.
He also plans to require pat-downs of all patrons and is considering a metal detector and hiring more security for the club, which can hold up to 700 people.
Friends and Gale's mother have said that Gale was obsessed with the Abbott brothers' former band, PANTERA, and had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, resulting in his discharge from the Marines.
"I don't think it would have made any difference if we'd have had 30 security guards," Cautela said. "I mean, would it have been better if (Gale) had come in through the front door and been patted down, or we'd used a wand on him and found his gun then? He was on a mission."

would it have been better if (Gale) had come in through the front door and been patted down, or we'd used a wand on him and found his gun then?
Answer: Of course it would have been better.
I've been to many shows in the Boston area and every club I have been to does pat downs and a few have metal detectors because people try to hide knives in their underwear. The fold up kind. I know it's a small investment, but well worth it. If they had patted down and used a metal detector, then Nathan Gale would be in jail right now and Dime would still be alive and making beautiful music. I'm sure lawsuits will follow against the club.

...is that Nathan Gale was shot in the face. I don't know how they do it in Ohio, but shows in New York city you get the wand or the pat down EVERY show, bar none. Have for years.

However, the Superjoint show a few years back they didn't do that cos they were pressed for time.
I totally disagree with this guy who's trying to cover his own ass. detectors and pat downs would have been a deterrent and they should've been alerted when this guy scaled the fence the first time. Their negligence cost a human life.

I think the pat down controversy is a mute point in this instance. Obviously, they are going to do it from now on.
He (Gale) didn't come in through the front door. He jumped the security fence out on the patio and ran in the side door. He didn't even pay to get in...

IMO, I think what he means is that the shooter wasn't going to be patted down if he would have went through the front door. To be blunt....it's clear he was going into the club with a death wish. If he was willing to jump a fence, make a mad dash for the stage, and then start shooting everyone just think about what would go down at the front door. He's in line, gets checked, guard asks "what's that", gun gets pulled, he starts shooting everyone in sight, gets into the club and cuts a path of bullets from the door to the stage.
While we are all at this....how many clubs/venues have you been patted down at only to look over later in the night to see someone video taping the show? We all have!!! Pat downs only catch the really really stupid people. They can't check everywhere. Those bootlegs must hide cameras somewhere. Same place a gun could have been hidden.

The shooter scaled the fence ONE time and ONE time only.
"Their negligence cost a human life" - First thing is the shooter is the one who took lives
LIVES
Dimebag wasn't the only one to die that night.
Jeff Thompson, Erin Halk (a security guy who saved others lives), and Nathan Brey (who died trying to help Dimebag)
People are already forgetting them and that's sad.

.....and I really liked it!
All jokes aside,I think if they had patted down psycho boy at the door it would have resulted in more dead and injured. I got patted down quite hard at Marilyn Manson on Halloween and it was clear that they were taking extreme measures to keep the venue safe. And it was a small venue, not as small as the one where Dime died but still,I think this will change the way concerts are mede secure for the bands and the fans.

its good that this club has been reopened..ive never been there, but have been to the NEWPORT-(might be my fav place after the aragon)
chicago clubs tend not to use wands, but most employ pat-downs.
milwaukee(rave/eagles) has good security--pat downs, wands--shit, they wont let you bring a pen inside...
i dont mind pat downs and wands caue they do save lives--the life they save could be yours

Obviously, ignorance is on the prowl and has bit a few of these posters on the arse. It's usually good idea to know what the fuck you are talking about before spouting off fictitious bullshit.
BTW - The last sold out metal show I attended in Boston I was NOT patted down. In fact, most of the clubs in Boston have gotten lazy with security because of patrons constantly going outside to smoke.

in Seattle (Graceland-it's a little smaller though seems like same type of venue) I can't remember them ever having a metal detector, and they only do pat-downs when the show is an "all-ages, bar with ID" not really for over 21 shows. Even at the Showbox, more like 850 capacity, it's about the same thing.

What is right or wrong? Does Rick Cautela have any children? Do we compare years of business to human lives? Is the alrosa villa the only venue in Columbus? Would an uniformed off duty officer be a deterrent? Is the cost of a wand $50? Police patrol parking lot during hip hop concerts? Can numb and pissed off describe this tragedy? I might be able to respond if some questions were answered honestly..I do know it was a sicko(Hale) that is ultimately responsible for ruining so many lives.

Magic Wands wouldn't have prevented this particular tragedy. The dumbfuck wanted in and he jumped a fence to do it. Not even a mountain of fairy dust could of stopped this sick son of bitch. He was a UD (undesirable) released from the military, trained to kill and they obviously taught him well. Unfortunately, he didn't have the on/off switch needed to control his killer tendencies.

He came in through the back door ANYWAYS. Even if this club had a policy of having metal detectors OR a wand or WHATEVER up front, it would NOT have mattered.
Nothing can change the past, all we can do is hope for a better future.
I've been to PLENTY of shows where I could not even take in the chain to my wallet, which is pretty rediculous considering you can seriously injure someone with your fucking CAR KEYS and even kill someone if you know what you are doing. .

of poeple bashing the club and the owner, who the hell expected someone to do something this horrble, when he jumped the fence they just thought he wanted to get a free show, and even if they caught him at the door he would have started shooting everyone around him, and yes maybe Dime would still be alieve...but then again maybe not...but thats not what happened and sadly i must say we lost a legend, we lost Dimebag Darrell Abbott.....so lets just stop blaming everyone and stop all this bullshit and just remember Dime...not fight and argue over all this shit

I've been to shows with security so tight, they wouldn't let a guy in if he had a fucking hard on. But I wouldn't complian, that's the way it should be, at least everyone knows they are safe. I'm glad he's reopening, it's time to start the healing process.

A fucking metal detector or pat downs WOULD NOT have stopped this from happening. I was there, I know EXACTLY how it went down. The guy jumped a fence, and ran in a door that people do not enter through. He ran through the club to the stage. Security DID follow him through the club. They didn't know he had a gun. They just thought he didn't pay, and due to the enormous size of the guy, they did not want to tackle him over an 8 dollar ticket price. So they chased him down but unfortunatly he reached the stage first. They grabbed him as he got to the stage but by then it was too late. They did everything they could. The head of security for the band, AND a bouncer from the club gave their lives that night trying to stop the man. The guy was determined to do this, and that's all that can be said. It's an unfortunate event but there was no stopping it.

I know FOR A FACT that it was not the club owners fault in anyway shape or form. GAYLE snuck in the club. Gayle was there earlier in the day to find DIME and rumor is GAYLE was in Cinci a few nights before. The owner of this club is a real person just like most of us and that man has done a lot for the METAL scene over the years, I could go on and on about what a huge fan he is too but I know him and you don't. Go to www.dispatch.com and read the rest of what RICK says and what he is doing and what he has done. That dude hurts like we do, he knows what this means losing DIME hurt the world and what a mark it has put on a legendary club. The Alrosa has been my second home for almost 20 years and I feel like I lost my home and what happened there on Dec 08 of 2004 will haunt that place and the Metal world forever. This will all be retold one days 10 and 20 and 30 years down the road, its history that will be around long after us. DIAMOND DARRELL will be admired for eternity, his life and death.
I know I rambled on there but just don't slam the owner for this please, it wasn't his fault. It was that pyscho who should have been locked up right from his military release.
