It is pretty obvious by the sales figures that file sharing programs like Napster and WinMX have taken their toll on album sales.
If you like a band BUY THE CD and support them, otherwise we'll start seeing more and more great bands calling it quits (see Megadeth, Fear Factory).

COMMENT | Shadows Fall - LOL! posted by : Bone Angel 4/30/2002 4:47:40 AM
If Shadows Fall deserves to be triple platinum, then acts like Meshuggah, Devin Townsend, Soilwork, Mudvayne or Halford should be 100 x platinum! SF is completely overrated - there ain't nothing brillant about second rate In Flames meets dated Bay Area thrash wrapped in third rate songs.
COMMENT | Soundscan not entirely accurate... posted by : Don't believe everyhting you read 4/30/2002 7:11:48 AM
In many markets, Soundscan will take a "sample" of actual sales. For example, if a chain has 10 stores in a region, they may say, "Okay, well this store sold 5 copies, so that will equal 50 for the chain." No accuracy in that, is there? Also, many mom-and-pop stores (like local underground shops) are not hooked into Soundscan, so those numbers will not be reflected in the totals. Although it's a better system than what was previously in place, it certainly is not perfect. Also, regarding higher sales for some acts, notice that bands with radio airplay invariably sell more albums, as there is more exposure of their music to the masses. And, also keep in mind that older albums have been on the market longer, so it stands to reason that those sales will be higer than more recent releases. Check out this site for more Soundscan charts: http://www.metal-sludge.com/SludgeScanChart.htm All kinds of good info there...
COMMENT | Inaccurate, but... posted by : SS 4/30/2002 8:16:28 AM
It may not be 100% accurate but it's close enough. With the huge releases it's probably very close to 100% while for the smaller ones, it's probably closer to 80% of the actual sales. A pretty good indicator, I would say.

It shows sales are over rated . Morbid Angel and Slayer are top rated bands...they just do not appeal to the wiggers and Creed fans
COMMENT | Where? posted by : RJG 4/30/2002 9:18:52 AM
First, Where do these figures come from? I have looked all over and can't find them anywhere. All I can find is the RIAA gold, platinum, etc...figures.
Second, Hoobastank is slang for "Whose Butt Stinks." That is for real too. No joke. The guys are from California and supposedly they would say it fast and it sounded like Hoobatank. I have the album and altough it isn't great, it is pretty good. Good music if you are in a good mood already.
Third, I have some of the Korn and LB CDs. Just because someone listens to this music doesn't mean they can't like "real metal" too. I love tons of heavier music. Also don't forget, a lot of albums don't sell for more than the reason that they don't get radio and record label support. Sometimes they just suck (such as Messugah, Metallica, Megadeth). If you want to hear some good bands check out www.sincebyman.com and www.sevendaysofsamsara.com.

COMMENT | What about mail order systems? posted by : charles 4/30/2002 12:40:25 PM
In my opinion, extreme metal bands sell more albums through their label's mail order service or other mail order systems than through retail stores, and I don't think these Soundscan numbers reflect any Mail oeder sales, so........
COMMENT | Online posted by : Tony 4/30/2002 12:50:40 PM
Right. I buy most of my underground metal online (at places like The End Records) and I'm sure they aren't connected to Soundscan.
I know Soundscan is set up to reflect sales that aren't made through a Soundscan connected store. I believe I read somewhere that for each market a band sells 1 CD in, Soundscan may reflect that as 9 CDs. That sounds very innacurate though so who knows.

Funny to see everyone complaining about album sales, I'd like to see how many people complaining would complain if some of these artists were platinum.
Going on, I wish bands like Shadows Fall and In Flames had higher sales, because they deserve them. Cannibal Corpse, fine, don't care about them, not talented at all, no structure to their songs, so I could care less how much they sell. Strapping Young Lad should have about a billion more sales, as at least one person in every 6 in the world should own at least one of their albums, which makes a billion (I'm speaking of in the world, I understand that the Soundscan figures are just US, but I'm going beyond SS with that last comment). No surprises here really though.

When you look at these numbers, you can see that free music has hurt recording artists, yet ppl still bash Metallica for standing up to Napster. They weren't just standing up for themselves and thier own money, but taking a stand for groups without the exposure to make a difference. To be realistic, they were brave to do that, they knew they would catch a lot of shit for it, but they did it anyway. If you really support the band, you will buy the record.

What good have YOU ever done for humanity, how much Foriegn aid do YOU put out to other countrys? Oh yeah, were dumb fucks, but at least we don't have our govenrnment running our life. We are all gonna listen to whomever we want. SoundScan isn't gonna dictate what I do or don't buy. Shit on um all!!

Your bitching at us for unleashing Rush? O no not talent! Well shall we list who America has pumped out? Snoop Dogg, Limp Bizcuit, Britney Spears, Back Street Boys, 98*, and a thousand other bands. Some guy asked "How Much Foreign Aide has your Country given?" About 3 times per capita compared to and American, if not more. And we pay high taxes so we don't let are poor starve on the street, or resort to selling crack to pay for med bills. But anyway most American's are cool, but as far as helping the world out Canada owns the US in that catergory, how many wars have we started? But anyway were was Opeth on that list? I'm from South Africa and I can see some arguments with Canadians and Americans, stop it and grow up. Now on to the sales. The only reason Volume8: The threat is real by Anthrax did'nt sell that well is because it's record company went bankrupt about 3 months after it was released this stopped Anbthrax from getting solid tour support and promotion for their record label. Dammit! People, you can still buy vol.8 though, but it is very hard to find! I spent 6 months trying to find. You can get it at 101cd.com for a bit of a hefty price but I promise you it's woth it!! For thoe of you who don't want to spend that much money on a CD then rather check out their other albums or check out their new album which will come out this June. It's called We Have Come For You All. Please check this band out and support more of good bands like slayer pantera NIN tool and wada wada wada.
