'Save METALLICA' Petition Calls For Split With Longtime Producer BOB ROCK

Several "longtime loyal" fans of METALLICA have launched a petition to force a split between METALLICA and producer Bob Rock on the grounds that his "contributions" to the group's songwriting/recording process are "quite wrong and have been getting worse as time goes on." An open letter to METALLICA from the petitioners reads as follows: "We, the longtime loyal fans and friends of METALLICA and their music, would like to see a major change with the upcoming album. I know it will be a hard thing to do, but we feel it is time to sever your working relationship with Bob Rock. "Don't get us wrong, some of us like a few (very few) contributions Bob Rock has made to METALLICA. Unfortunately one thing we can all agree on is nothing has been the same since he joined the ranks as longtime METALLICA producer. We are not criticizing Bob Rock on his technical skills as he has mastered his sound. We just feel that his contributions to help craft a METALLICA song are quite wrong and have been getting worse as time goes on. "From 'Kill 'Em All' through '…And Justice For All', the albums are timeless and we can listen to them over and over. Although Bob Rock's first producing effort with METALLICA, 'The Black Album', may have sold the most copies worldwide, it doesn't mean the album is the most musically pleasing. As much as we support METALLICA, most of us listen to the first few albums much more. The songs were simple and overproduced. " 'Load' and 'Reload' were examples of not having any control. The music was all over the place and Bob Rock went with the same sound plan as he has done for all of METALLICA's albums. We heard this sound yet again on the first disc of 'Garage Inc.' We have watched the videos of Bob Rock telling METALLICA horrible suggestions in the studios while we cringe knowing it is the wrong decision. Keep in mind, Bob Rock was in a band or two himself when he was younger. The reason no one knows this is because his bands failed because he cannot craft a good song let alone a help craft a good METALLICA song. "Then we are left with 'St. Anger'. It is completely unlistenable and this is the album that Bob Rock had most of his influence. Not only in production but the songs are all a mess as well. Every song could be cut down by about 3-5 minutes simply by cutting out most of the repetition. Bob Rock didn't realize that repetition of one riff over and over for 10 minutes doesn't make a song a pleasingly structured song. The sound, as everyone can agree, did not break any musical barriers, it just made the album worse. Even Bob Rock can do better than this. "We understand and appreciate the time and effort Bob Rock has put into METALLICA. By your own admission, you state METALLICA is a hard band to work with. We appreciate him being there to keep the band together at a personal low point of their career to help them carry on as a four-piece. But we feel the day has come. "We are excited to hear the next studio album with the addition of masterful bassist Robert Trujillo. We hope it breathes new songwriting life into the band. All we ask is you take our suggestion seriously for the sake of the band and your fans. Please end your working relationship with Bob Rock as producer and let's enter into a new phase for METALLICA." Everytime a person signs this it's one more reason the band will KEEP him. They will not let people who haven't liked most of the stuff they have put out tell them what to do.

face it - Bob Rock and Metallica are "family"...
It's true that in a family there is often a "bad seed" but you have to live with that, because it's family!
I hope I am making sense...

Not to mention a strong business bond between them.
Face it - Bob Rock is not some kind of a monster "conspirator"...
He doesn't control Metallica's brains.
They keep him because they are comfortable together.
I'm sure - if they were dissatisfied with Bob Rock - he would be gone long time ago.
They simply are a "family" and I don't see how it's appropriate for strangers to decide what goes in the "family".
Even though - fans play a huge part in the band's life - they are technically - not family.
They don't live, eat, sleep under the same roof.

No matter who the producer is the music will continue to suck. It has to do with the attitude and feelings within the musicians. They were a bunch of angry rebelling kids when they started out and it came out in their music. Now they are rich, comfortable, family men. They can try and try to capure the sound they had when they started, but it will never happen.

Telling Bob Rock "fuck you very much" won't turn Metallica back into angry kids in a craphole in El Cerrito, it'll probably just create more publicity, and therefore, more money. Though maybe they should consider using their 80's gear again? Instrument-wise I don't think its changed much anyway, but using vintage tape machines and preamps in the studio would surely give them a better sound than was acheived on "St. Anger"

Not all post Kill em All bands copied MetallicA...
Just all metal bands have the same sub-set of influences...
Venom / Raven / Anvil / / Riot / Tank /Tygers of Pan Tang ...
All the so-called bands that followed Metallica into thrash were thrash bands when Metallica was Leather Charm a LA styled rock band...Just Metallica had discovered the same subset of influences that were part of the new fleding extreme metal movement...
I heard all this talk of Metallica copy cats but I never hear one except Athropy from Arizona...
They for sure can not be talking of pre - Metallica thrash bands such as Anthrax / Exodus / Slayer / Overkill because they all predate Metallica AND HAVE THERE OWN STYLE AND SOUND when future Metallica members worshipped bands such as Def Leppard and the band called Girl the UK
I have better CD's in my collection that Predate Kill em All and better CD's in my collection that post-date the Metallica Black Album...
As far as the band getting rid of rock and getting back to metal, I think they should stay in the alternative grunge and nu-metal fields because thats were there true fans are... There would be a 14 year gap in a Metallica fans collection between the Black album and a comeback album, and it would be not be from the heart.
Then they would have to be a trend based rock outfit again, if they did not pull of a comeback CD..because the extreme metal market is not as strong as it was in the early 1980 to mid 1990's...Sure there is more product than ever before, but can you spend a few hundered dollars on product like you could during the days when Kick Ass Monthly/ Metal Forces and Violent Noize fanzines were around
As a former fan of there metal era they should keep Bob Rock and just concentrate on making money.
I think retro-thrash and reuinon CD's just adds to Metals overstaturation problem. And Metallica should just keep there eyes on the Metal Edge and Revolver fan base.
Music is a business...the choose alternative music over Black Sabbath and Motorhead riff based music. One I would never do only because of what i seen what happened to Metallica, without Load and Reload, I would of never keep the hunger alive for extreme music. Because one day Metallica worshipped Venom the next day the cryed when Kirk Cobain blew his brains out!!!!

Right, this is how it works fools....
You are about 17-23 years old, you have something to prove, you are inspired as that is the age you are inspired and creative. You put out some ground breaking albums, you prove yourself, you take it as far as you want to take it, you get to age 25+ and achieve recognition, your tastes and inspiration changes, you decide to simplify things a bit, you change producer and achieve success because your music is simpler and more accessible, you lose your drive and inspiration because you have been drinking and taking drugs for over 10 years, you copy Trouble for an album, you spit out another couple of albums because you are contractually required to....
Flemming Rasmussen was crap, the productions had no depth or warmth and just listen to the drum sound on Justice! But it was the mid 80's...
Rick Rubin is the only guy that could bring them back. They would have to decide to put an effort into writing proper songs and cut out all the repetitiveness. The best Metallica song I heard was 'One' played at the Grammies, it was cut and trimmed down to this short song with all the interesting bits in it, it kicked! (despite James not being able to sing and a shit sound mix).

What Album did Metallica lift the Trouble sound and or style for...???
Honestly Trouble and Metallica have the same sub-set of influences and James Hetfeild said Black Sabbath was the band he admired the most through out his career, the same band Trouble are inspired by..My favorite bands are Mutiilation and Burzum on one -side and Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir on the other. AND I OWN THE FIRST 14 BLACK SABBATH ALBUMS, who does not !!!!!!!!!
What album of Metallica's do you claim Metallica nicked the Trouble "Psalms 9" sound for ????????????

jakerz0 brought up an interesting point tha ti don't know if i totally agree with cause i haven't heard the whole St. Anger album. But i wonder what would the response would have been if the production were done alot better. Was it the music that sucked, the production, or was it both. any ideas people? I know Nevermore are remixing their last album because the production was not that good but the music was awesome. So I guess i wonder what the main downfall of Metallica's last album was, the music or the production?

I imagine all the mullet heads having nothing else to wish for in their life : a great Metallica album like they did (kind of) 20 years ago. ahah I'm amazed by the stupidity of that petition and by the those who sign it. Losers! Why don't you try some other band instead of basing your life on Metallica? Slayer was formed in late 1981, hardly a case for Metallica rip - offs
They could not but out the album before Kill em All because Metal Blade did have the Money to do No life to Leather so it stayed a demo because there label High Velocity shelved the project in April 1982 ...If Metal Blade did not have money for Metallica circa 1983 then that Means they sure in the fuck had to wait for a paycheck from thunder bolt and Enigma and Restless distrobution companies, to get any bands off the ground.

Trouble's Psalms 9 from 1984 on Metal Blade was not there first release to the underground or metal fanatics.
They had a cassette in released in 1983 called " Live ...." the one sold in Kick Ass Monthly and the one that got them signed to Metal Blade. Did that 1983 recording ever make it on Offical CD?
Maybe we should petition Metal Blade for that !!!...or who ever has rights to there back catalogue !!!!

Any REAL Metallica fan would like St. Anger/Load/Re-Load/Black Album? Why?
They did the opposite of selling out.
If their newer shit only identifies with those who like their new sound (and their old obviously), then how is that selling out? I'd say producing the same sound 10 times in order to make more money is selling out!

Metallica are not going back to there Venom / Raven / Diamond Head / Jaguar / Blitzkreig / Satan roots...
Music is a business to most and a religion to others...
I just thought going from a Black Sabbath style of Music to a alternative stye of rock, was a bad idea because alternative trends die faster than metal ones, so Metallica had to follow the alternative trend from grunge to nu-metal, then the next trend will be in time for there next release will be emo. So they will follow that trend. Because nu-metal only can be packaged so many ways. And I think the trend is past its successful selling point.
And Metal fans like anything from AC / DC all the way to Pig Destroyer, just as long as there is quality IE every song on the album different from each other.
Its not that Metallica became the issuse, what became the issuse is that they are not so good at being a grunge band or a nu-metal one. Because the originators of those trends are better than Metallica...
Thats all...I am a true fan of what authentic, and Metallica just lacks in that aspect since after the black tour...
The criticism is not that harsh, but just honest enough to where I keep my money away from Metallica, and spend it on some artist..destroying and smashing away the preconviced notions of how metal should be played.
If Metallica would of never made LOAD and reload, most of Metallers would not of know where to draw the sell - out line. Because I seen the Metallica sell out with my own eyes.
Logo change and hair cuts were not the issuse of Metallica not being able to capitalize on the grunge trends and nu-metal trends!!

The black album sold over 13 million copies. Yet some of you loser are still convinced that Bob Rock sucks!!! The guy produced some of the best bands. Motley Crue, The Cult, The cranberries, Bryan Adams and Bon Jovi. Now you may not like these bands but I think you should give credit where credit is due. Bob ROck is one of the best producers in music today and Metallica knows it. Otherwise they would have gotten rid of him years ago. Rock is not writting the music metallica plays. Having been a long time fan of your music and all music in general you have to admit that no other band in the world has fans that analyze and make it a point to make an opinion of any new music you put out.
That said, I think Metallica is at a new stage in their career.. new bassist.. therapy... etc. In my opinion, a new producer would give you guys a fresh outlook on your music... You probably won't read this by now but anyways...
Local Cover bands who covered Metallica were getting better and better. Copycat? How about early MELIAH RAGE? A master band such as Dream Theater can cover BETTER (you heard me) the music of Metallica than Metallica themselves.
Furthermore, bands that followed the metal route took it to another level, including Dave's MEGADETH. They all got better, faster, more complex and harder. To a point where Metallica became friendlier to listen to, just when they became mild enough to get airplay on MTV and radio.
Of course, you'll never hear old school tallica on pop-radio.

This is pretty funny, and I semi-agree with the petition. Sure, Bob Rock commercialized Metallica, but Metallica themselves ARE responsible for the music they put out post- Justice. They changed, period. If they want to put another thrash album, that'll be fine with me. Hell, I might even download it (heh).
But, this thread is what is really disturbing. And I have noticed a pattern. It goes something like this:
1. Random BS posts, somebody says something real zealous and stupid.
2. Older member gets on and trys to give his/her opinion in a logical manner

I signed it. Just liked I've signed a few paychecks over the years. So many people think they are in Metallica's head. Knowing what they think. Well, Metallica must remember the beginning days, the days when it was the fans and only the fans who acknowledged them. Maybe now that they've made that mountain of money they deserved (for getting metal out in the open (see:Master of Puppets)) they will again realize that it is the fans that count. Can't hurt for their true fans (not just the ones that say 'I only like early Metallica, they suck now') to voice an opinion. We don't know their contractual obligations or if they're willing to say 'Fuck It', but, it's worth a shot.

FLEMMING RASMUSSEN whom produced "Master of Puppets"
Jerry Abbot - Dimebag Darrells father whom produced "Far Beyond Driven"
Chuck Burns - Always producers the heaviest music and made incredible classics like "The Bleeding" and "Cause of Death"
Tom Morris of Morrisound in Tampa. I worked with this guy way back in 1991 and he is incredible. What he had done with Morbid Angel and other bands is great.

Nightwish, Mastodon, Killswitch Engage, Opeth...all are so much worthier (is that a word?) of your $$$ and attention than Metallica these days. I haven't given up completely on them
yet; I'd simply rather spend my time and energy on music that I actually like/love.

Incidentally, the tinny drum sound is very reminiscent of early 90's hardcore-drum sound AND lack of solo's. No shit, early 90's in Western New York had a nice scene. Redline, IND....I remember the lead singer from Cannibal Corpse (Buffalo) used to come to Lockport and check out shows and Kendzies, they weren't in Ace Ventura yet, but very underground popular, if that makes sense....St. Angus has refelctions of that type of music (not Cannibal Corpse asswipes)
Let me speak for everyone and hit a middle ground that most will agree to:
Experimentation is nice, but it's time to get back to basics.
80's Kinks..."Give the people what they want" THAT WAS THE NAME OF THE ALBUM! I forget the song titles now, but 3 of their songs are "Girl you really got me now" played with different tempos and lyrics.
But it worked and their are good songs on the album, and additionally, why the fuck does it take 2 years+ (if not longer) for Metallica (and other bands) to put out albums-Fuck that, put one out every 8 months and see what sticks. Zeppelin had 10 albums in 10 years-granted averaging only 8 songs per album, but fuck it...8 songs is perfect..the Black Album Metallica had 12 songs and each album had more following...go back to 8 song albums.
Give us what we want...Metallica is reaching the point where they have to prove it to themselves at this point-NOT LIVE, mind you, they are still excellent live-but new material. Tune the fucking guitars back to E and let's fucking hear it. Sad truth is, they probably will never go back to E...C's and F's. Bullshit 1 finger chords that anyone can play.

2. Bob Rock has helped Metallica earn a fucking OBSCENE amount of money since he started producing them. Think Lars and Jaym$ is gonna give THAT up?
3. He's close enough to them that not only does he produce them, but he helps write the shit and played bass on the last album. You're a fucking idiot if you think they are going to show him the door.
4. Although the "Monster" movie was a joke, it DID show us one thing loud and clear - Ulrich and Hetfield do NOT like to perform in the same room with each other, let alone write any shit. There's no fucking way in the world that there will be another album after St. Bob Rock.

This patition is useless. Some (not all) Metallica fans have been against Bob for years and been pretty vocal about it. The fact is those people are usually so narrow minded to think that Bob is the number one influence on how a song sounds. Its fucking bullshit. Have they ever read the writing credits for the song? The only reason why Bob is given credits on St.Anger is because he played bass and helped create the bass lines. Big whoop, I'm sure Jason did that too.
I don't really care what producer they get, I just hope its a damn good album. Besides, Metallica and Bob are great friends and I don't see them replacing him unless an album totally bombs. St.Anger sold tons of copies so I would hardly call it a failure.

personally i think st anger is their best album since AJFA, i dont even have the albums from the 90s apart from S&M, i simply gave them away, i was ashamed to have ever listened to them. the black album is their worst in my opinion, i just hate it with a passion. and worst of all, people say its their best, just because its sold the most. i mean Killswitch Engage sell more records than All That Remains, but ATR are by far the better band, even more so now that KsE are shit, their new album is shit and they should get a new vocalist while they still have the chance to get back some dignity

Blackviolin was correct. I was referring to the general sound of Trouble circa 1990's. I think it's closer to the Load album, which I quite like as it sounds a bit like Trouble, tunings and guitar sound to boot! (and also James' cowboy boots ;o).
If you want to hear what Metallica should've recorded after Justice, listen to Dream Theater's Train of Thought. It sounds like Metallica should.
