PHILIP ANSELMO Says PANTERA Would Have Played Again - Jan. 21, 2005
Former PANTERA/current SUPERJOINT RITUAL frontman Philip Anselmo has posted the following message at his official web site, PhilAnselmo.com:

"I've been stumbling around in a coma of loss. No truer lyric has been written than 'You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.'

"To explain my side of things with the hiatus of PANTERA, please give me a moment and think about what I say. Think.

"I joined the band in late '86/early '87, and the chemistry clicked like a vice grip, we hit it off like four bad mother fuckers could. Perfection. Dime, Vince and Rex could play fucking anything. You pick the style, they could pull it off. So in reality we had to find out where our musical hearts lay strongest. After short deliberation, our intention was to be the most devastating 'hardcore-heavy metal' band in the world.

"You know, when the so-called heavy metal press first got wind of 'Cowboys from Hell', they were absolutely unsure what to think. More bad reviews than good at the time. The reason? They had never heard a band quite like us before, and I can't blame the press or anyone for not hearing the full experience, but there were flashes in songs like 'Primal Concrete Sledge', and 'Message in Blood'.

"Once again, as I have said before, the press remained basically unimpressed, BUT, with the heavy metal audience, the phenomenon of PANTERA had already begun. Slowly but surely, the fan base grew larger and larger (the best fans in the world, I say still!)

"The LP that I believe was the first 'true' PANTERA LP was our second major release, 'Vulgar Display of Power'. As a band, our brotherhood and obvious originality and musicianship cemented us as one of the most feared and loved bands ever to step on a stage. That is what we all lived for. We figured as long as our awesome audience was moved (headbanging, skanking, stage-diving, of course), we would play for us and them. Of course, we had a deep connection with both our music and our audience, and we were also very different, image- and attitude-wise… It was extremely rare to see a lead vocalist or anyone with a shaved head unless you looked deep into the underground with bands like the CRO-MAGS, AGNOSTIC FRONT, ROSE TATTOO, etc…(I didn't mean to leave anyone out). The difference between us and these great bands was the fact that we also had an insanely great guitar player who was respected alongside the best of the best, and a rhythm section so unique and tight — goddamn they were tight. Tight is and always will be the word. I guarantee throughout our 17-year existence it would be extremely difficult to have one memory of Rex or Vince messing up or playing a part wrong ever. That, to some people, may be amazing or impossible, however, I mean what I say 100 times over. They were the best damn musicians I'd ever seen or heard. Period.

"With 'Far Beyond Driven', our third major offering, going to #1 on the Billboard Top 200, it seems appropriate to say that some rock magazines were taking notice, one way or another. Guitar magazines throughout the world were right on the money by calling Dimebag the best axeman of the time. That was absolutely true and within his lead style, influenced by the likes of Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Ace Frehley, and himself (it's true, I believe most all great lead guitar players have their own style to hear and influence. By god, Darrell had that type of talent and then some). His rhythms he came up with, in ways, probably became even more influential. His influences were extremely varied and unique from guys like James Hetfield (METALLICA), Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman (SLAYER), JUDAS PRIEST to MOTÖRHEAD, AC/DC, ZZ TOP, ROBIN TROWER and even some of the ultra-underground bands I would play him.

"In all honesty, he preferred a more accomplished guitar player than some of the rawer sloppier stuff that I adored, but what he did love about the rawer stuff was its all out assault on the ears. Bless him, he did love that. Within his style, he commanded and demanded the best out of himself, and all of us around him.

"So I will say to everyone in Texas that ever called me a friend, and especially all of my brothers that helped work with us as PANTERA on the road crew; I love all of you.

"To the fans in Texas, and the rest across America and the world, beware of the shit you read in rock magazines. When these pathetically titled 'journalists' (not all of them, but a lot still) had finally caught on to the fact that we, PANTERA, had beaten all the odds a band could, and the press had no choice but to build us up until it seemed that they were all of a sudden desperate to make us supermen in the magazines, it was an assignment. It wasn't true to them, they were getting paid for it. We weren't supermen, just a great band.

"During our whole career, there were always those interviews where you could tell that the 'journalist' didn't know shit about our band, using wrong facts, whether they made us look good or bad, not knowing a thing about our characters, our musicianship, or our careers; asking the same questions, or as 'journalists' love to do, just plain making up whatever they wanted.

"For every 'journalist' out there, these facts may or may not fit in with the way you personally do your work, but I know and so the fuck do you that this load of bullshit behavior, that thousands of fans read on a regular basis, is absolutely irresponsible, and it's obvious that you truly don't care about your responsibilities to the fans, or how many lives you truly destroy. It's all about what sells magazines, isn't it?

"A month has gone by since we, his former bandmates, his current bandmates, his friends and fans around the world, have lost Dimebag. I can't necessarily speak for them, but for me, it's the first thing that comes to mind when I awake, if I sleep at all, still. It is also the last thing I think about as I lay down to rest. Goddamn, it still hurts me.

"I want to be there for Vinnie Paul no matter how long it takes. I want to be there for Rita, if she'll have me. I want to be there for the Kat and the rest of the crew as well, people that have been a part of my life for 17 ½ years. Once again, I'm hoping my biggest hope; that they realize that the bad stuff written about our bands and ourselves was coerced nonsense made to sell magazines.

"Bear with me, please. I beg you all.

"By the way, all of the level-headed fans that write in and offer support, that in itself is the best therapy I've received yet.

"I have considered retirement because of a broken heart, but also in my heart, I cannot let my fans down. As the days go by, I realize that I'm at war with some things inside of myself, that I don't mind sharing with you: I always [believed], truly always, no matter if it was my own dreams just coming to the surface, if we, just the four of us, were to sit in a room together, we'd have been laughing, crying, and laughing again. The weight of the world would be lifted off of our shoulder as we hugged each other. Play together again? I have a suspicion that our fans would demand some type of reunion. My god, I thought of that so many times, and because what our fans wanted, they usually got. It may have taken a little longer, but think about how long it took the original BLACK SABBATH to play together again!?

"Then in one night early December 2004, an event changed the entire year and our entire lives into one of the cruelest sort. Some mentally disturbed individual …crushed the dream. He took one of the most talented, extroverted people ever to grace this earth.

"I'm crushed for the loss of my friend that I loved, for Vince, his brother, for Jerry, his father, for Rita, his life companion, for all of his good friends, for every music fan that was inspired and loved his playing; especially those who were lost or were injured that night we lost Darrell. None of what I have said will ever bring him back, and it hurts so bad. I add very humbly in hope that no one else out there ever has to go through something like this: Keep your loved ones close.

"Yours truly, I can take no more at this time. Philip H Anselmo"

Having the time to sit back and look at his career Phil must know a few things:
1) Pantera are one of the best heavy bands to exist
2) He is fact shared the stage with three very special musicians
3) The fans will always appreciate all that Pantera gave us, and
4) That he must forge on. It is what Dime would have wanted,
and the fans want more out of both Superjoint Ritual and
Down.

Rest easy brother, and come back with a crushing album in memory of our fallen brother.

Long live heavy music!!

There's gonna be a ton of people that are gonna bash him and say he's self serving and an asshole and he said he would stay quiet forever or whatever he said.

Fuck that. I was one of the people saying Phil is outta control and losing it because of some of the STUPIDEST shit I've ever heard him say....BUT

I read that whole thing and for fuck's sakes he spent almost 18 years with the guy sold a gagillion albums....I thought this was a great letter.

I think he's a in a ton of pain, mostly remorse, I'm sure some of it some serious regret for some shitty things said, but fuck it.
I thought this was pretty stand up and I give him kudos for saying what he said.

A little time off let's the batteries recharge. Pantera would have reunited, but now because of some crazy beootch dis ain't gon' happen.

There was alot of truth in what he said though,

I can't imagine how hurt Phil is. Regardless of anything that may have happened between the band members, they spent so much quality time together that you have to know they all cared about each other immensly. I think Phil spoke eloquently and said it all.

I know he's hurting. I understand it sucks. But it was Phil who said that Pantera was never going to have a reunion. It was Phil who never responded to the phone calls. It wasn't a hiatus, it was done. He's sad now. He's sad that he did that now, I'm sure, but I doubt that Pantera would have ever REALLY gotten back together. The rift was too deep.

Not that I'm very sad about this, really. I was never a big Pantera fan.

However, shit is always talked between brothers. Anyone you spend that much of your life with in such close contact, you WILL have arguments. It's easy to sit on the sidelines and crticize but I suggest everyone that thinks Phil is a fuckhead read that letter twice and as he said, really think. He said he would not be back and quite frankly I am glad he is. When he made that statement you could tell he was a fuckin wreck. Shit, I was fucked up and I didnt even know Dime. ...to hear you're going through so much pain. This whole thing has left a lot of people-friends, family, bandmates, and us, the fans, wondering why and definitely numb over it. Dime was an incredible guitarist and from all accounts a superb human being. He had many years left to live, laugh, and bring the metal before this person took it all away, and he will definitely be missed.

Thing is, Pantera came to my city at least three times that I know of, and each time I missed them due to work or some other obligation. "Next time they roll through" I'd say. Now that will never be...I should have seen them all three times they came through...

Oh, and Power Metal ROCKED!!! : ) I still listen to that album to this day...

I truly hope that he can find some solace, or comfort somewhere. I have no doubt that he's terribly torn up over all this...as many of us were. I lit a candle right after it happened, and couldn't let the fire go out. I, to this day, cannot understand why this happened. As I said, I hope this dude can clear his head, remember and treasure what he has NOW, not what he'll "take care" of later. It's a fact, none of know when our time is up. Gotta relish all the great stuff, and forget the best you can the crap that happens. In the scheme of things, no matter what, all that matters are your friends and loved ones.

Irresponsible Journalism:

I don't quite think that's the case. When you have a frontman with a god complex, coupled with a problem with drugs (you choose), then the words write themselves. It's not possible to interview someone like Phil, and not have it come out a way that isn't predicated. He's a loose cannon, and remember his wanting to take on the whole mid-east problem...."coerced nonsense made to sell magazines." I call bullshit.

And with any band, theyre going to interviewed, or reported on by an occasional idiot. It's a fact. So, it happens to all bands.

But that is exactly what it was stupid shit. Its also obivious that they want nothing to do with him at this time.

I hope Vinnie and the rest of them let things go and forgive to forget. I think it will help both of them out with the sadness they are all feeling. I still can not believe to this day that they would not let Phil come to funeral. I don't care what he said. A great man is dead and someone for almost half of Dimebag's life stood next to him. so. all i want to say is, it's not good to be a junkie and blame others for all that is wrong

when the big WRONG in this whole mess is PHIL HIMSELF

if phil had never left PANTERA
-dime might still be here

if phil had never been so into his own shit outside PANTERA
-dime might still be here

if phil wasn't the one to blame
-dime might still be here

PANTERA might still be, it would've been a PANTERA supersize world tour with kick ass music

it wouldn't have been a club where a psycho fan got dime

but it was what it was
and you can't change fate

phil needs to wake up from his lying drug haze and start seeing his own blame by looking in a mirror and trying to remeber all the shit he talked, and still keeps talking

i wouldn't have cried much if phil had died

because PANTERA could've continued without phil

but PANTERA can never continue without DIME

YOU bloody idiot, how can you say Dime might still be here? You, like all of us, have no idea how shit might have turned out.
Secondly - however much Phil MIGHT seem to be the guilty party, i really dont see how HE ALONE can be the one to blame for his death - its fucking stupid and ignorant to suggest that.

Thirdly, 'If Phil wasnt the one to blame = Dime might still be here.'

Your third statement is off the wall - how can ypu blame Phil for someone getting murdered?! The accused was shizophrenic (SP) for pitys sake, Phil however much hes said in the press etc cannot be blamed for this. I'm sure any logical person will see this.

I'm sorry if that seems a little too blunt for your liking - but its the truth. Those four men were together for almost two decades, i.e. blood brothers - neither one of that band would cheat on each other in such an extreme way.

Basically - FUCK YOU.

My favorite band of all time. I still haven't grasped the fact that Dime is dead. It's surreal.

I think this letter from Phil is great therapy, and we should expect new music from him, whatever the band may be, and I think it will be good.

All right, I'm still soaking that all in. Now, I'm not one for excess Phil-bashing, but along with all of the other facts that Anselmo spoke of, I have a very simple one that needs to be shared.

Phil, I am speaking directly to you...The magazines printed what YOU said. Whether they asked you the questions to make money off of magazine sales is not the issue (of course they were gonna ask you about that--they'd be absolutely irresponsible journalists if they didn't try to find out more details about the relatively vague, sudden, and odd breakup of the biggest and best metal band of the last decade). The issue is that they printed only the words you said...the irresponsible, hateful, and utterly ignorant words YOU said. OK, there may have been times that you were misquoted or a bad journalist made up a few facts, but neither I nor you nor anyone else in the entire metal community believes that you didn't actually say the vast majority of the comments that were printed in magazines and posted on websites. Instead of blaming the entire feud on bad journalism, why not own up to fact that you started and fueled the fire with your own voice. You were the one to open the whole can of worms of public bashing...Vinnie and Dime only responded to your constant insults (and they waited a good long time before doing so. What were they supposed to do? Continue to let their names be dragged through the mud by you? No. they reacted the way they had to.)

Perhaps if you would simply admit your own guilt in this whole matter instead of blaming it all on the metal press, Vinnie, Rita, Jerry, and everyone else who was close to Dime will finally accept you with open arms. Until then, they are going to be just like most of the fans: skeptical at best whether you even truly understand the impact of the decisions YOU made.

I doubt you'll ever read this, but I figured I'd write it anyway. I seriously didn't mean this as some kind of needless insult...in fact, you and I have a mutual friend who's name I'm not about to mention. If I ever did see you, I would gladly do a shot with you and be absolutely cool (even though you have been extremely cold to me in the past when I've met you)...I have a ton of respect for you and your talent and the impact you've had on the world. Take care.

(PS. To Blabbermouth.net posters---please do not email me posing as Phil Anselmo...Seriously, please don't do it. And don't email me to insult me in disagreement with my post...leave that shit here on the board.)

Glad to see Phil expressing himself about the sad loss of Dimebag Darrell.

Even though there was a lot of bad blood between Phil, and Dime and Vinnie Paul I am sure Phil was extremely hurt by what happened on December 8th.

Yeah, I know he said Dimebag should be severely beaten, but those are words; not actions. The last thing Phil wanted was for Dimebag to be shot.

When Pantera split, I was disappointed but I figured after taking a four or five year breather that getting back to jam would be inevitable. Especially because of how successful Pantera was, and how they kept the Metal torch burning high during the nineties when Heavy Music was not as popular as it was during the 80's, or now. They kept the business as usual approach, and that is what I respected most about Pantera.

Obviously being out on the road for long periods of time, and being on tour busses together for that period of time took its toll on the band's relationship. It's the same principle as hanging out and partying with the same friend everyday. Everyone needs their breather.

Forget all the negative press, and B.S. that's been going on. What happened to Dimebag was horrible, and unfair and has affected everyone from friends of Dime's, family members, bands that toured with Pantera, and even someone like me who admired Pantera for staying true to Heavy Music and for partying hard.

I am happy that Phil took the time to clear some smoke, and get some things off his chest.

I never took sides on the Pantera split. I didn't like the Damageplan CD all that much, but live they ruled.

However, I was more influenced by Phil Anselmo because of his interest in underground bands, and underrated bands. Most of all I was happy to read his statements in the posting he distributed on Blabbermouth.

R.I.P. Peace Dimebag

Burn in the eternal pit of Hell Nathan Gale. I have issues too, but am sane enough to keep my bitterness to myself. What that idiot did to Dime defeats the purpose of being into Metal.

Best wishes to Vinnie Paul, the Abbott family, Phil Anselmo, and Rex.

i have to say, i'm SO glad he finally got around to a formal, badass and thorough statement. i've been waiting for it for so long. and i have to say it's what i was hoping for.
i never took a side when they broke up. i'm only 21 and was a fan since like 95 or 96, not a long-time fan so to speak like half the posters here who might have known them since Day 1 of Cowboys From Hell or before. i'll fucking admit it.
i've loved Down, Superjoint Ritual and Damgaeplan equally since the split. i've never talked shit about any of those groups on here, you could look it up in my posts yourselves. saw Dime and Vinnie last summer in Flint, MI and saw Superjoint like a month after Damageplan played in Flint. Phil wouldn't come out and talk to fans, my older bro said he's not the type to come out and chat much if at all in recent years. but hey, Phil took a copy of my older bro's old band's demo once and jammed to it and talked to 'em once about it once and hung out with him so i guess since he hung with my older bro and listened to his shit once i'll always think that was badass and never talk shit about Phil no matter how bad he may be at times.
anyway i'm rambling now,...but i seriously appreciate this statement, and i hope that he can at least bury the hatchet someday. a Goddamn shame the shit between the group. i'd like to at least see them make up someday. it would most definitely put a smile on most of our faces i think for at least a moment and at least be able to let them put the fued to rest in light of this most horrific of tragedies.

bless you, Phil, i pray you can work shit out w/Vinnie eventually. don't quit the biz dude, please you and Vinnie and Rex all put out at least one more album of some kind of your own each before hanging it up. make up dudes. we need to see it happen so bad i believe.

That post has been the most heartfelt words that I a PANTERA fan till the end have heard from you scince DIME'S passing. I truely believe in the sincerity of you're words and I can understand (though will never be able to really feel what you are going through) the way you are expressing yourself.

PANTERA changed the way I heard and felt about heavy music, extreme yet tuneful, groovy yet heavy as fuck...........goddamn, YOU and DIME and VINNIE and REX composed some of the best fuckin hardcore, yet widely appreciated heavy music that is still to this day unmatched by the so called "metalcore" bands that so obviously try to emulate the sheer might and agression of PANTERA.

I am still to this day deeply saddened by the horrible events that transpired on Dec. 8, and the only way I can make sense of it is to celebrate Dime's life by crankin' PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN cd's at unsafe levels of volume.............I always held out for a PANTERA reunion, and I know the shit we ALL can put each other through in this life because of petty differences that at the time seem larger than life, but in reality it all amounts to shit with respect to the way we really know and love the ones we are at odds with.

I as a DIE HARD PANTERA FAN can only respect the words you have givin us and wish you all the strength beyond strength that the true fans could give you.

I thank you for being so forthcoming and I do wish you succsess and domination in every musical endeavor you pursue. Regardless of everything, I feel that DIME smiles on you no matter what, as do the TRUE PANTERA FANS.

HORNZ UP to the extended PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN families, and to those closest to DIME, stay fuckin strong..................

Phil is right that, one way or another, the media is responsible for this. Gale was a psycho, but his delusions were corroborated by many "leaders" of the heavy metal media. Phil isn't free of the blame, and i don't think he's trying to be; he's clearly torn up about this on a personal level, since he's said a lot of fucked-up stuff about Dime over the last few years. but these magazines clearly had a desire for him to say these things, and they would do anything to put a good quote on their cover under Phil's name and the latest "last word on Pantera" (i've seen at least a half dozen magazines promise something along those lines, and some of them may have done it more than once).

to all of those who probably want to tell me to hop of Phil's dick, this isn't a theory i've come up with since Dime's death, i've thought that this was pretty clear for about 2 years now, and until now i've had no sympathy for Phil because i never thought that it would come to Dime getting shot by a maniac. now Phil has to deal with the death of a longtime friend, and it seems that different actions taken by Phil could have had a direct effect on stopping this from happening. he may have had no way of knowing that it would go anywhere near this far, but it's still going to be on his mind.

and to anyone who thinks it's far-fetched, you've clearly paid no attention to how Metal Hammer, Kerrang, and all those other shitrags have treated the Pantera break-up. i hardly ever read music mags anymore because they're mostly about soap opera crap instead of music. as Chuck Schuldiner once said "Support music, not rumors."

Phil was not banished from Dime's funeral and memorial because SO-CALLED JOURNALISTS DIDN'T ASK GOOD QUESTIONS...As Dark Angel said back in the 80's, TIME DOES NOT HEAL. And this last month will not put any kind of dent in my opinion that it was PHIL ANSELMO'S FAULT and his obsession with rebirthing himself in the "underground" that influenced his increasing distance from Pantera's mission statement, and ultimately his mounds and mounds of shittalking in interviews worldwide. When Phil said "darryl needs to be severely beaten" he was acting out the role of harder-than-thou frontman of an affected wannabe hardcore band called Superjoint. No one forced those words down his mouth. Being PC now has no point so as always, Phil's words are untimely. Since he was such a backstabber, I doubt he'd mind that now he has a lifetime ahead of him with which to play tiny hardcore shows in a second-rate band. You dug your grave Phil. Slice it however you want, but the fact remains YOU WERE THE ONE TO BLAME for everything wrong with Pantera. The racism, the drugs, and the breakup. Now pay with a lifetime of regret.

I hear and have seen the anguish in you, and i believe it.

Now lets consider some things...

Your culpabilty in the immeasurable loss of Dimebag is absolute.

1. Why did Pantara break up? Maybe cause you were using the stage as your personal soapbox and the brothers wanted to play music. They voiced there displeasure about not being able to give all they could , and then some to the fans , by losing an average of 5 songs per show to your rambling ponifications.

2. Or was it because it got to the point of taking seperate tour busses, you know cause they were from Texas and you were from Louisana, so different vibes right ,thats all it really was, huh?

3. Maybe all the shit that was "coerced" out of your mouth!!

4. Maybe you crossed pathes with that pshcho fuck at your gig 6 weeks previous.. He was reported to have been there.. maybe he came for you...Maybe he even talked to you...Maybe you were wasted and say some shit...maybe you don't remember... this pshcho thought you stole his lyrics...YOU were clearly in his head...HE respected you...he feared you or he would have got you...You were lucky!!! DimeBag, his family ,friends and fans were not!!!

5. You said you've been clean for 3 years..I saw you at hob Orlando with Down winter 2002 and you were shitbagged...Talking your usual shit..even yelled at Rex when he hit some notes during your demonspew...

On Dimebag's implication in interviews that Anselmo has returned to heroin:

"What a stupid man. What a shallow, stupid man. How would he know what I do? And by the way, I've been fucking bone-sober for three and a half years now. Anybody who has seen me on stage, anybody who has seen the shape of my body and the size of my arms, and the fucking burning desire in my eyes, knows that I am fuckin'… I drink four beers and I have a buzz now. Gimme a break. I couldn't even say that in my twenties."

6. Your influence is not to be underestimated.. You're fully aware of the troubled mostly young male "sheep" craving to belong...Does "BROES" ring a bell?

6. Your post Dec. 1st from the upcoming Metal Hammer mag concering Dime; "He would attack me, vocally. And just knowing that he was so much smaller than me I could kill him like a fuckin' piece of vapor, you know, he would turn into vapor — his chin would, at least, if I fuckin' smacked it. And he knows that. The world should know that. So physically, of course, he deserves to be beaten severely". Did any of these words ring true to that Psycho fuck just a week before Dime's senseless death?

Phil, you didn't pull the trigger , but you damn sure loaded the gun.

All that being said you have a chnce to positively change the future.. Make amens..
Admit it was you and not the Mags that said these things...Your far to intelligent to deny your responsibilities..
Thats why its killing you inside...
Make the right decisions and honour your fallen brother...
Time will tell just what Philip H Anselmo is truly capable of.
The task lies ahead...
You have to be a better man then you ever imagined ...

You have that oppurtunity now.... Dime never will again

The original letter says Part 1, I wonder how many parts there will be? I felt kinda sore at PHIL too but than I thought who am I to judge what happened with those guys. I know for a fact that they were all like brothers and brothers fight and argue. Sometimes they get taken out for no reason and one is left alive while being dead inside like PHIL must be now. Phil is an addict and his fans should support him instead of name calling and running away. I myself have fought drug addiction and like PHIL all I deal with are people who look down on me but DO NOT understand the powerfull force that addiction is. I do know for a fact that PHIL was doing a lot of rock throwing at the Abbott brothers in the past year or so, I heard some of it with my own ears. Dime and Vinnie tried to help him in a couple of ways but the addiction won. Should we feel sorry for Phil, not really but we should support him and hope that he gets stronger from this and moves on doing what he does best just like DIME would have had things been reversed. No Pantera reunion is the worst possible reality to deal with and not hearing that big Texas voice and seeing that crazy ass red goatee. A aprt of all of us died and some of these posters get a kick out of us like the forgot how bad they felt when Cliff Burton passed away or Chuck Shuldiner.
Not giving DIME respect just brings bad kharma on you and yours. Personally I loved DIME like I knew him or something. I only met him in person 1 time during the Reinventing The Steel Tour w/ Slayer. I was 5 minutes away from the Alrosa that night and probably would have got wasted with those dudes being that the Alrosa was my home away from home. PHIL tore that stage up in DEC of 2003 and he said things on stage about his old band and this was his band for ever and he spewed some racist crap and that whole scene was ugly. But then he came out and appologized and done a whole autograph session, I know I was his security in the rain that night, he kept thanking me and seemd like he was real cool. So I don't know what to think of it I don't know them but I know friendship and addiction and I know death. I wish Phil the best and especially everyone and all from Dec 08th Alrosa Villa Columbus Ohio. In the Blink of an eye all of our lives changed, I know mine has. I am pretty much lifeless with grief and ate up with self pitty and I can't shake out of it. R.I.P. DIME--------We miss you bro \m/
Get clean PHIL and help us all get through this.......

"Brothers" don't turn their backs on each other like he did to Dime and Vinnie. Just becasue the woke up out of another drug induced haze and realized any chance he had of making money or getting press off a supposed future reunion with Pantera was gone does not earn my sympathy. Like so many others have posted before me, Phil needs to take responsiblity for himself. He badmouthed Dime plenty when he was alive; he should just shut up and learn to live with himself now. Disagree if you want, it's just my opinion.

Phil's biggest problem is himself. The media let HIM say whatever he wanted. I guess Phil's never heard of what "Libel" is. He has not taken responsibility for all the things he has said in the press, especially now in the wake of tragedy.
Phil should learn when to shut up.
Phil should retire.

If any of you think that all the shit Phil has talked about Dimebag over the years was just "made up" by some jounalist then you're exactly as fucking stupid as Phil hopes you are. He stuck his little stubby foot in his fucking mouth and now lying about it is the only way he can see to to get it out. Go ask Vinnie why he wasn't allowed at the fucking funeral sheep!

I have seen Pantera about evrytime they came to Michigan, since cowboys from hell came out. including the last 3 shows they played here. I have seen Pantera Live more times than i can count all the ticket stubs. I must say they were looking worn out that last tour together..
For me, the break up was great. I had a chance to see Phil live again on Harpos stage, with Down and SJR, both bands are awesome. I thought that was the best move Phil could have ever done. Is bring the music back to the fans close up, his stage was my stage, and i havnt shared the stage with Phil since they got so god damm big, playing arenas. made it pretty hard to get on stage compared to the smaller venues. So i thank you Phil.
Then we had the honor of seeing Damageplan last year. Ok Vinnie and Dime back on Harpos stage was awesome. But what was most awesome to me is when Dime signed my truck tailgate after the show. This is what it is all about, getting to meet these guys again after so many years of being out of reach. I also got to meet vinnie and wanted his autograph, but he had to get back on the bus for some other reasons, so i asked Kat to sign my truck instead, he tried to tell me he was no one, but to me he was a legend part of Pantera, he is so kewl. Get well soon Kat, and thanx for the pot leaf you drew on my tailgate..

I wouldnt blame Phil if he did retire, im 36 and im thinking its time for me as a fan to do the same. Retire with all my greatest memories and photos of Pantera.
But please Phil, You can never bring back Pantera again, its over. Im sorry, and i feel for all those affected by this tragedy.
But music is about progress. And moving on to better things. The 80's & 90's are over people. To bad that asshole gunman didnt relize this.
I will forever sport my blacktooth grin in memory of Dime.

R.I.P Brother Dime.

YOU KNOW WHAT MAKES ME SICK? YOU. YOU AND THE PEOPLE THAT CLAIM NOT TO CARE, YET CAN'T STOP HARASSING ANYONE WITH A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. IF YOU'RE EVEN INTO MUSIC, DO YOU NOT HAVE A BAND OR ARTIST THAT IT WOULD DEVASTATE YOU TO SEE MURDERED ON-FUCKING-STAGE?
I , LIKE MANY OF THESE PANTERA FANS, HAVE GROWN UP WITH THIS MUSIC, IT HAS EMOTIONAL ATTATCHMENTS, SO THEY DO FEEL LIKE FAMILY, DICKHEAD. IF YOU CANT SEE THIS, THEN YOUR SOUL IS NOW BURNING
IF YOU DONT CARE, THEN WHY ARE YOU HERE?

Im not one for having a go, but sometimes it's nescessary thru my eyes.

As a Pantera fan, I think that people should back off of Phil. This guy wrote good ass lyrics for Pantera, and his voice was unmatched for Metal. I've never heard anyone like him. And Dime shredding on the guitar is what made Pantera the kickass band that it was.

Dime and Phil were like brothers, and brothers get into arguments, and some talk shit about each other. What you need to realize is that even though they were pissed at each other, and even though they talked shit about each other (mostly Phil), they had a bond that couldn't be easily broken. They had their fight, and they didn't talk for a couple years, but you gotta believe that the respect was still there, and that if they would've talked to each other, that Pantera probably would be back together.

On the subject of whether of not Phil is sober, I believe that he's still on drugs, but he's probably cut down. I know that he's been known for his drugs, and he's even died of an overdose, but I'm sure that he's at least cut down and learned from the mistakes of the past.

As if relates to the whole comment of the media spreading shit, I believe that works both ways. I know that Phil talked a lot of shit, but I also think that the media blew some of it out of purportion and overexaggerated the things that were said. There was bad blood, no doubt, but I KNOW that the media blew it up to some extent.

Whether or not Phil will admit to talking shit or not, you have to feel for the guy. He lost a brother, and he never got to make ammends. He never got to talk to him about the problems and try to solve them. He has to live the rest of his life knowing that he never got to make up with one of his best friends for 18 years. He has to live with the fact that he'll never get to settle that part of his life, and it'll cast a shadow over his head for the rest of his life.

Whether or not Phil was talking shit about Dime is not the issue. The issue is that Dime is gone, and Phil is a broken man without him. His life will never be the same, and the lives of metal fans will never be the same. We'll never hear the shredding of Dime's guitar solos at a live show again. He's gone, and that's the end of it. It sucks, but it's reality. Phil didn't kill him, and Phil didn't want him dead.

Everyone jumps to conclusions and blames everything that happens with those guys on Phil, but in reality you don't know shit. You're not one of the guys, and you don't know what went on. Many things could've happen to dismantle Pantera that you don't even think about, or have any recollection of.

I guess all I have to say is don't jump down Phil's throat unless you walk in his or the other band members shoes and know what's going on in their lives that cause them to do the things they do.

R.I.P. Dime

Phil, take your time, heal, and get back to the one thing you and the rest of us love, Music!
