SOULFLY Mainman Talks About DIMEBAG's Death, Possibility Of Rejoining SEPULTURA - Feb. 1, 2005
In a recent interview with Music Mania Magazine, SOULFLY/ex-SEPULTURA frontman Max Cavalera was asked to share his thoughts on the murder of PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.

"It took everyone by surprise and I still find it hard to believe that it really went down like that," Max said. "I just saw Dimebag and Vinnie less then a month before this all happened. We were in Texas with SOULFLY. They both came to the show and it was really good to see them. I have toured with them many times and he was a really friendly person. . . He was a really good-hearted person and that's why I think it's difficult for me to understand how anyone could do this. The way I see it, I like to look at the positive side, he died doing what he loved. He had a guitar in his hand and that was his life. If I had a chance to ask God how I would like to go out, that would be one of the ways."

Asked to share a story about Dimebag, Max said, "I have really great memories back in the SEPULTURA days when there was heavy drinking with those guys. Unbelievable amounts of liquor and I don't know how we didn't end up in the hospital on that tour. Also I toured with them again with SOULFLY. I remember the first day of the tour Dimebag knew I loved camouflage pants and he presented me with a pair. I thought it was a really nice gesture. I wear the pants a lot. I remember he had a tattoo on his leg of a thing called, blacktooth. It's some kind of drink.

"My brother actually designed it. It was a little head of a guy and he actually tattooed it and I couldn't believe anyone would do a tattoo of that. It was crazy."

In the same interview, Max was asked if he would ever consider rejoining SEPULTURA if he had the chance.

"No, I believe things happen for a reason and I see that as a great time in my life that I did something, but I see SOULFLY as being a new chapter," he said. "I go with the philosophy of going forward and never backwards."

I saw that same Sacred Reich, Sepultura, Napalm Death bill here in Jersey in a tiny tiny little club. I remember the tour had some title to it to, much like Thrash of the Titans, I just wish I could remember what it was called. I could never remember that Sick of it All opened.
I was a bit of a Sacred Reich fan. I don't know of anywhere to buy the discs unless you go to ebay or a used cd store. There's one place by me that has hard to find stuff. Next time i'm in there I'll do a look for you and see how much they want for it if they have it.

....enough to have seen Max w/ Sep a couple of times....

the New Titan's tour with Napalm was AMAZING.

Another time was on the Chaos AD tour (I forget who opened though...Clutch maybe...)

Interestingly enough...the live tracks off Blood-Rooted we're recorded at 1st Av. in Mpls.....I'm grateful to say I was there and along with the Titan's show...they we're fuckin' amazing. Really....fuckin' amazing band back then....

However...face reality folks...the Sepultura we all want is long gone...(kinda like another metal band *cough* 'tallica *cough* that'll never return to form...)

I don't mind Soulfly though....there's a lot worse out there...

After seeing them play live, I immediately got the Roots album and became hooked from then after. I love Soulfly too. Right now I like Soulfly AND Sepultura with Derek.

If Sep got back with Max I don't think it would be the same. They wouldn't do another album as awesome as their others. The expectations are too fucking high. I'd rather have two really good bands then one medicore band clinging to their past.

remember their stop at the Axiom on their BTR tour? I still regard that show with Sadus and Obituary opening as one of the best! I remember Obituary using the pyro and Trevor missing his cue, almost went up in flames there! As soon as Sepultura came out, the place went ape shit - as one would expect. They closed out the show with a few Sabbath covers, one being Symptom Of The Universe! My, how the mighty have fallen... The Arise tour was good as well over at the After Dark - Sacred Reich and Napalm kicked ass! I believe the Chaos AD show was held at the Bayou Theatre/Place on Richmond? Clutch was ok, Fear Factory was better. I guess anything is better than being booed off the stage opening for Obituary at Backstage/Cardi's - not a good night for FF on their first tour! Oh well, enough with the reminiscing...
