Mysterious JOHN BONHAM Tracks Appear On The Net, But Is It Him?
- Feb. 10, 2005
|
|
ContactMusic.com is reporting that mysterious lost drumming tracks believed to be recordings made by tragic LED ZEPPELIN drummer John Bonham have appeared on the Internet. Web site www.disndat.info/bonham features 23 tracks reportedly recorded by Bonham and is offering them to fans as streaming audio and MP3s. The anonymous sound engineer, who put the recordings on the site, admits he has been overwhelmed by the response, but refuses to confirm or deny the tracks are genuine. He writes, "I really only stuck these tracks up here to share with a specific group of people... but it seems that in the process, the link to this page has been spread to the masses. "I understand the mass appeal. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have! "I got these from a friend that's part of the group of people that I mentioned above. I recently talked with him and asked where he got them... and his came from a friend, too... and he gave me exactly what was given to him, so what I've got is what he's got, is what his friend had... and so on. "Neither of us know where they came from... we just know what and who they appear to be... so take that for whatever it's worth."

even if if it's not Bonham, I don't care.
Sounds a whole lot like him, but if it's not, well it's more than close enough for me.
Least it's him in spirit if not in fact.

Im willing to believe for sake that it's JHB playing.
That is his sound and style of playing.
I can clearly hear him beating to All My Love, Fool In The Rain and what sorta sounds like Ozone Baby in those tracks.

Track 6-13 is definatly Ozone Baby
Id love for more ultra rare stuff to flood. Ive got an outdated 10 years old book that details Zep bootlegs.
Someone years ago in the 70's broke into Jimmy Page's house and stole a bunch of studio recordings.

I'm not that big a Zeppelin fan but that sure as shit sounds like the sound and feel of Fool in the Rain on those last two songs. I've always really loved the beat for that song. If that's not him it's a DAMN good repliica. I have to believe those are real.

Listen to track 22, fool in the rain. thats GONZO. I'm a huge Zeppelin fan learning to play drums, so this is great stuff. ATTENTION all hiphop artist from the Rock community, please dont put out some stupid shit using this. Kanye West should only be allowed, or maybe the Beastie Boys. ( they have done it before). Good to hear you again GONZO.

The kick drum sound is gotten by using natural reverb. Instead sticking one mic inside the drum, you place one inside and one or two a distance away and then 'dilute to taste' between the two channels. Or you could just send the two (or three) signals into one channel. That'll create a real 'When the levee breaks' kind of kick... Cool sound.

That's Bonham. Those are outtakes from the 1978 recording sessions that produced "In Through The Out Door" along with some of the tunes from "Coda" (including "Ozone Baby").

If it's not, the guy could make a living in a tribute band. Didn't Bonzo line his kick drum with sheet metal? I read somewhere that he did that. Sure, it adds to the sound, but it all goes back to how hard he stomped that damn pedal. Just like guitars and amps. You could give me a Wolfgang and a Peavey, and I ain't gonna sound like EVH. Well, I might sound like the recent Eddie...

if it ain't Bonzo, it's a DAMN good hoax. Right down to the headphone leakage and Brit accents.
A key element to the Kick drum sound is compression. You're gonna want to squeeze the signal before it hits the tape. Also the real secret ingredient is adjusting the compressor so that the attack and release suit the TEMPO of the song. You gotta consider this becaue otherwise, it doesn't "breathe" right.
Bonzo usually used two heads on the kick, with no vent hole. Even in the studio, from all acounts I've been able to find. This makes a different sound than either a one head only or two heads with vent hole arrangement. Mic the kick from the front (looking at the kit) AND from the batter head side, near where the beater hits the head. Make sure you get the mics in phase-check this by panning the two tracks hard left and right, and switch between stereo ands mono modes on your console. If the signal "thins out" in mono, you're out of phase. Move the mic a little. Try it again. Etc. Once you get the two mics in phase-DON'T TOUCH THEM AGAIN! You can bounce the two tracks down to one to save space on the tape, or leave 'em seperate to allow yourself more control in mixdown (if you've got a lot of tracks to work with)
Definitely the "Room sound" is a big part of the sound-but it's a fine balance of ingredients and never underestimate technical shit like phase relations and compression settings.
Check out Tape Op magazine online-you can get a free subscription there.. Also they have a great interview with engineer Andy Johns who worked with Bonham in a back issue, and another great interview with Dave Mattacks about recording drums.

COMMENT | Tapes are most likely from Polar Studio - Stockholm, Sweden

This was the world famous studio where ABBA recorded their hits in the mid 70-ies and where In through the out door was recorded in 1978-9.
The studio was located in what was basically a half residential/half office building in the middle of Stockholm, and it was decommisioned about two years ago due to financial difficulties and a failure to renegotiate the fucking rent contract with the fucking property owner!! :-(
The story was widely published in Swedish news press as not only ABBA but the likes of Def Leppard, Cher and Backstreet Boys (sorry...) recorded there. In one of these articles, publishd in the largest Swedish morning daily "Dagens Nyheter", there was an interview with the studio engineer (unnamed by me here) who was turning the knobs on the mixing table for In through the out door, and where he plays a tape on the big 24-tracker, reviving Bonzo and his drums before the reporter who is obviously absolutely blown away.
I believe these are the tapes we are all hearing now...
John Henry Bonham - Thank You!
