MESHUGGAH: 'Catch 33' Cover Art Posted Online
- Feb. 21, 2005
|
|
The cover artwork for MESHUGGAH's upcoming album, "Catch 33", has been posted online at this location. The artwork, which was designed by MESHUGGAH drummer Tomas Haake, is "a visual compliment of sorts to the album title, i.e the paradoxes/negations/contradictions of life and death (as we see it in our finest moments of unrestrained metaphoric interpretation) that the lyrics [on the new album] deal with!" according to Haake. As previously reported, "Catch 33", is scheduled for release on May 16 in Europe and May 31 in the U.S. via Nuclear Blast Records. The follow-up to 2002's "Nothing" is being described as one continuous 47-minute song divided into 13 parts and is said to be "musically the opposite" of the group's 2004 EP, "I".

To prove this guys theory. Meshuggah suck my dick. If this album is really the polar opposite of "I" it will be jazz or blues. But it wont. It'll be the same gayshuggah trying to appeal to the same dumb shit fans.

Listen to their music. Simple as that. They don't sound like the same lame trends like Shadow's Fall, Kill Switch and all those wanna be bands out there. Another good thing about Meshuggah is that they're kinda technical in a sense but not too technical. You can still groove to their music and nod your head. If you don't like them, I could give a fuck.

Meshuggah is an aquired taste, but those lucky people who "get it" realize that these guys are light-years ahead of most other bands. The technicality, musicianship, and songwriting talents of these guys are mind-blowing. I wish this album was coming out sooner. :-(

I forgot a letter in that word. Gee, that just totally destroys ALL my credibility. Boo-hoo!
Look, I used to bash Meshuggah MYSELF! I was one of you who thought this band was just a chaotic wall of noise, and had no talent. But then one day I decided to open my mind and let go of all the pre-conceptions I had about musical "rules", and you know what? I was fuckin' blown away, and have been ever since.
Trust me. As a former Meshuggah basher, I can honestly tell you that just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean it's no good. It only means that... you don't understand it.

So Kull, if you obviously have completely different musicial preferences, why post here?
To the-Dude: Oh, so you're still alive? Good to know...
To Benzer: Please chill out just a little bit, ok?
Always remeber: Music is a matter of taste. Sometimes I would listen to Jazz, sometimes to some fine old Blues, and then, all by a sudden, it has to be MESHUGGA all day! Variety is the best recipe (I hope my spelling / typing is correct, I don't want to annoy anyone ;-))

["Go to school and get a fucking job, then!"] Um... been there, done that. You obviously don't know very much about me personally.
I'm just trying to explain that this band really does have talent, and that's coming from someone who used to think they suck. And besides being cliche', the Ashlee Simpson comparison is just ridiculous. Not being able to grasp the concepts behind Meshuggah's music isn't comparable to some bleach-blond bimbo who's faking it.
Look, I'm not trying to come off as holier-than-thou because I like Meshuggah and you don't. It isn't some kind of "exclusive club", as you put it. I'm just trying to help you understand that this band requires a total shift in your own musical perspective to appreciate what they are doing. If you don't think music is worth the level of focus and attention that's required to follow and comprehend Meshuggah, then that's fine. Just don't act like other people are stupid because THEY do.
No need to get "pissy" about it.

Molotov, that's why. He's probably the reason most people on here hate them too. We've had to put up with his braindead bullshit bashing bands that we all like forever so now here's our chance. And for the record I have checked out Meshuggah (for the simple reason that Kirk Hammett kept saying it's what inspired the load of crap known as St Anger) and I will admit it, I don't get it. I prefer a little melody to my music. For everyone that likes it, that's great, but if you want to know why a bunch of us get on it, blame molotov.

Not sure if you were complimenting me or taking a stab at me, but thanks either way. However, your statement isn't really true. I tried numerous times to get into Meshuggah, and failed. It just wasn't until I finally figured out what the hell they were doing that I "got it". So, it wasn't like I was bashing them without listening to them, I just hadn't figured them out yet.

I know everyone is entitled to their opinion and people have different tastes, but there are people here who are denigrating the choices of others a) with mindless insults without basis, and b) in a totally hypocritical manner. Personally I love Meshuggah. It's not relevant to try to explain why other people have ideas different from my own; these are their own reasons (ie "they just are").
However, most people will be enraged who stick to their own and are on the receiving end of another actively going about insulting them for the sake of insulting.
Let's just get this straight, if you don't like Meshuggah you have to afford their fans the dignity they deserve. Shockingly, they might not like some of your musical choices, and probably do.
This is not the Rasmus we are talking about. Other than falling back onto provacative (and frequently ignorant) claims, Meshuggah must be recognised for the boundaries they have pushed. They deserve (and demand) respect, NOT NECESSARILY appreciation.
Their technical music has paved the way for a whole troupe of other bands to follow. Their musical and technical merit has influenced countless legendary bands, and will do so for (hopefully) generations to come. I'll illustrate. Let's take this crazy situation: you like a band. That band has openly declared the influence of or affiliation towards Meshuggah, marking their produce with allegiance. By attacking Meshuggah you are attacking the merits of the band you supposedly like.
And that's the thing with Meshuggah... try to tell me that out of your ENTIRE catalogue of music (you like) there is not one band with even a tiny semblance of Meshuggah in what they play. Meshuggah's influence is EVERYWHERE and is undeniable.
So, at least, afford Meshuggah respect and recognition. And if you don't like Meshuggah's music try substantiating your comments for a change. We don't need idiotic blabber, we get that through mainstream media the whole day long.
Anyway, can't for the new album. Every album is a revelation.
First post, cheers!

I had the good fortune of hearing a couple rough-mix clips from Catch 33 at work recently when a Nuclear Blast guy came in for meetings. It's good of course, but sadly it sounds a LOT like parts from Nothing and I, like verbatim. I only heard a couple parts, but it definitely wasn't "the exact opposite" by any stretch.

Thanks- I was being a dick, but you said it well. And how long a band has been around has NO effect on their level of "suckage". Look at KI$$. 30 years and they suck now more than ever.
I love heavy music. I love HEAVY music. I LOVE heavy music, but it does have to have some iota of... *ahem* melody and musicality to it. Chops for chops' sake and "scary" vocals (thanks ADCS) do not necessarily make for memorable music.
When I want cookies, I'll go to Mrs. Field's. When I want music, I'll listen to a band with (again) at least a MODICUM of musicality and melody. Motorhead is noisy as hell, but they are at least somewhat tuneful. I understand we all hear things differently and what ya like is what ya like, but GAWD Meshuggah just sounds like a detuned random tone generator with crappy vocals to my ears.
Sorry kids.
It is, at least, about ten cuts superior to RAP.

But I think you will still find that molotov gets on everybody's nerves, even people who like meshuggah. Listen to "Destroy Erase Improve". There's melody there. And to anyone who thinks that Meshuggah are about downtuned guitars and growls: They're not. They're about using jazz signatures and fusion/jazz solos (holdsworthian solos to be precise) while playing extreme thrash metal. Interesting to say the least. And to do such a thing you do need to be talented. You need to be an accomplished jazz musician, and they are. Thordendal also recorded a solo album, "Sol Niger Within" with jazz maestro Morgan Agren from Sweden. http://www.morganagren.com/ Listen to his stuff and tell me he's got no talent. Tomas Haake is just as good. You can hate Meshuggah all you like, but to deny they're talented musicians is just moronic.

I don't like Dream Theater but i'd never say "they suck they are untalented" because they clearly are not. but speaking for myself, my dislike for Meshuggah began long before I knew Molotov lived and breathed. Similarly to ~The Dude~, I also listened to Meshuggah and hated them, but unlike my metal compatriot, I didn't suddenly 'get it' one day, try as I might.
There's no denying Meshuggah are remarkable at what they do, but alot of their stuff, to me, sounds like Fear Factory's 'Soul Of A New Machine', with a disk flaw that makes it skip and repeat continuously through. The first Meshuggah cd I bought, 'Destroy, Erase, Improve', was so distracting in an unpleasant way, that I had to check to make sure my cd player wasn't fucking up. It wasn't, of course, and for someone with ADD, they're terribly frustrating to listen to in a myriad of ways.
The cover artwork, to say the least, is quite wicked while remaining simple. If the music therein resembles the cover, it might be a Meshuggah album i'd finally consider owning, regardless of anyone else's disgust, or praise for the band. I'll listen to it, and if it's the same-old same-old, it simply won't become part of the collection. I've listened to every band i've ever bashed, and Meshuggah just don't do it for me, but i'm always willing to give them a fair try.
Stay Metal, ya'll...

Hatebreed is so boring. I don't see how Meshuggah is too complicated for some of you. Maybe it has to do with which side of your brain you use more often. Hell I don't know, I don't have the answers. All I can say is go listen to track #2 "Beneath" on Destroy Erase Improve again. That song great, so is track#4 Transfixion.

What did I say about chops for their own sake? *snore* That's just so much masturbation. If I want that, I'll listen to some jazz wanker or Yngwie Malmsteen who can REALLY shred. Those aren't my bag either.
Maybe Cookie-Shuggah are great technicians. *ho-hum* So are Yng and the jazz wankers. Doesn't make their music interesting to me. Steven Hawking is a great mathematician/theoretician. I'm not going to get off listening to (or reading) his high-minded ramblings and expounding on the latest quantum physics. I would much rather read Clive Barker. Not as technical, but more satisfying- TO ME. repeat- TO ME.
I really don't give two shits what you listen to. What ya like is what ya like. It's just fun to watch you kids get so worked up that not EVERYBODY likes what you do.
Remember children: Mass acceptance does NOT equal quality. How else do you explain crap like Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and the Backdoor Boys?
Enjoy what you enjoy, don't take it so damned seriously and DON'T WORRY WHAT OTHERS SAY & THINK.
I personally like The Darkness and I could not care less what you think of that. Now learn from this...

... I actually hope this one DOES sound more like "Nothing". Nothing is the album that finally opened my ears and mind to these guys. Hey, I like fast stuff too, and I thought "I" was fuckin' awesome, but there's just something about that slow plodding pace on Nothing, and how it deceptively carries so much technicality, that just mesmerizes me. It's like the aural equivalent of staring into a kaliedoscope, with hundreds of different random colors and patterns swirling around, yet they all fit together and make perfect sense when viewed as a whole.

I can not believe someone here thinks that Hed Pe is superior to Meshuggah.
I stopped caring about them after Destroy Erase Improve...such a good album. Still cool guys and talented musicians with a purpose - a mission. That's alienated them from a lot of folks who don't get it. I don't get it anymore.

I said ANYONE CAN DISLIKE THEM IT'S FINE BY ME, but not call them "untalented". And btw your "maybe they can shred" and "yngwie and the jazz wankers can really shred", shows lack of musical knowledge, sorry. Still to each his own, but once again i only said that CALLING THEM UNTALENTED or SAYING THAT THEY CAN'T PLAY IS STUPID, because they can. If you don't like them, fine.

That's extremely weird, as Meshuggah are all jazz musicians and the jazz influence is huge. Actually more than huge all the tempos, song structures and solos, and the drum fills are PURE jazz fusion. You should know if you like jazz. Every jazz musician i know is either into them or finds them extremely interesting, for obvious reasons. Anyway it's fine if you don't like them no problem. It's just stupid to say they can't play.

I started getting in to them about 2000, and there fucking killer...but nothing was a little on the slow side, but it still had the structure of their music writing......so I'm looking forward to this release...and if you hate a band because of someone on blabbermouth making posts....then dude your easily scarred, because there's alot of dumbasses who like to post shit for kicks KULL is a perfect example

I saw them open for Tool and they were fucken amazing, anyone who talks shit on Meshuggah is just your basic run-of-the-mill ignorant fuck. And please, I know after I post this I'm gonna get some douche going "Man fuck you I ve played in band for 12 years and I'm not ignorant and meshuggah does suck" sure I'll admit that their earlier stuff sounds kinda repetative in some parts....but give me a break I'd much rather listen to some crazy time signatures then listen to a fucken Motley Crue chorus

"rhythm coordination" Don't accuse others of not understanding it if you can't spell it. And in the context of your post, it would be "you're", not "your". "You're" is a contraction of "you are" and "your" means it belongs to you.
4th reich- Don't be so damned literal. Again I use the word context. With the word "shred", I was simply pointing out that showing off one's chops for their own sake does not always (or often) make memorable music. I could sleep through Cookie-Shuggah, Yngwie or any jazz wanker. Does not interest me. Sorry. For that matter, you said yourself that Cookie-Shuggah amount to jazz wankers.
Further, did I say they cannot play? No. That is in total juxtaposition to what I did say. If you have the chops to wank with, you can OBVIOUSLY play. I just said, in other words, I would rather hear melodicians than technicians.
Now go eat your cookies, kids. And have some milk. It will put you to sleep for awhile and it's past your bedtime.
