METALLICA's 'Some Kind Of Monster' Named Best Documentary At INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS
- Feb. 26, 2005
|
|
|
METALLICA's acclaimed film "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" won the Best Documentary prize at the 2005 IFP Independent Spirit Awards, held earlier today (Feb. 26) in a beachfront tent in Santa Monica, California.
The Independent Spirit Awards honor films whose funding comes at least in part from sources outside of the major Hollywood studios.
Winners were chosen by the 9,000-member nonprofit Independent Feature Project/Los Angeles, which includes actors, directors, writers and other industry professionals.
Other films competing for the Best Documentary honors were "Bright Leaves", "Chisholm '72: Unbought & Unbossed", "Hiding and Seeking: Faith and Tolerance After the Holocaust" and "Tarnation".
"Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" documents the turbulent making of METALLICA's last album, "St. Anger". "Some Kind of Monster" also resulted in a book, "Metallica: This Monster Lives", written by co-director Joe Berlinger.
METALLICA are currently taking time off but hope to begin working on a new album later this year.

...we don't get 'Da Bizkitz' version of S.K.O.M. There would be nothing more degrading that having to watch Wes BOREland crying in front of Freddy Retardo and Phil Towle... that said, S.K.O.M. kicks dick!! A must-see for anyone even vaguely interested in metal or the music industry in general.

The best part of the documentary is when the band tells their $40,000-a-month-therapist Phil Towle that they don't need him anymore.

The best part of this documentary is when it ended.
The Ramones End of the Century is a much more deserving documentary than this steaming pile of dog turd.

...and I'm certainly not a fan, but if nothing else, it completely obliterates Gene Simmon's "Asshole" in terms of quality, performance and inspiration. Then again, that's not exactly a struggle. I mean, there were a couple of good tunes on Load and ReLoad (yeah, I like "The Memory Remains" - shoot me!), so I don't get that whole King-Fowley-Everything-After-Their-First-Demo-Sucks-Dick approach... but hey, that's just me.

I think this movie was very well done. People don't realize how close we were to losing Metallica. Say what you will, but their contrubutions to Metal are unbelievable. I still don't think any album has compared to Master of Puppets... especially songs like Disposable Heroes. It's just fucking brilliant.
And I'll also go out on a limb here and say that I really do enjoy St. Anger for what it is. I see it as a big "fuck you, we do what we want!" It is not radio friendly or trendy in any way. No other album has EVER sounded anywhere close to that one. The drums irk me a little bit, but I like the chaotic approach to the whole thing. You never know what to expect next, and everytime I listen to it, I hear something new. Like the other day I was listening to the title track and I noticed this sort of angelic choir singing in the background. I'm sure it was made using keyboard but it's still cool as fuck. You can hear it really well with headphones. All Within My Hands also has killer moments. Unfortunately, songs like Invisible Kid, My World, and Purify make it seem subpar. I think the good songs are really good though, like Shoot Me Again (awesome riff), and Frantic. I do understand why people hate it though... hell, I think in the last year and a half since its release, I've only met 5 or 6 people that like the album as much as I do.
The next album is gonna be fucking great though! Mark my words.
LONG LIVE METALLICA!!!!

the documentary fucking rules as the does everything else metallica has ever released. It deserves every award it gets. One of the things i love about metallica is that they are willing to take risks and do what the fuck they want, they are never ruled by trend and they certainly arent ruled by money and any motherfucker that says they are can suck my dick. if they were ruled by money they would have made a radio friendly album with all the hits on it, they didnt, they made a fucking ritous album that takes a few listens to like, and not many more to love. i can underdstand why people dont like it cos is isnt another master of puppets, but as james says, all you fans who wants another MoP after another just want that because of safety.....fuck safety. SKOM was a risk for metallica and was a risk well taken. METAL UP YOUR FUCKING ASS

"The Independent Spirit Awards honor films whose funding comes at least in part from sources outside of the major Hollywood studios. "
Isn't that adorable? Um, how stupid do you think people are? "Monster" is owned by Elektra Records, which is WARNER BROTHERS STUDIOS, which IS A MAJOR HOLLYWOOD STUDIO!
WARNER funded this film (used as part of the ad campaign to sell the ST. ANGER cd)
The "Independent Spirt Awards" is the IFC, which is owned by NBC! Non-Profit? my ass! There is no such terminology in Hollywood as "NON-PROFIT"

I thought it was an interesting documentary. It actually gave us a view into their world. I agree with Newstead in it though. They've been through so much shit together and they couldn't go into a room together, they to go and get a 40 grand a month therapist, that's just week. They seem forced to be doing what they are doing. That's not how you make music. They should have either broken up or took the time to get their shit straightened up and then recorded the cd. What they put out was subpar and they could have done so much better.

Best documentary? what the fuck are you talking about? Best documentary was "Born into Brothel's". Metallica didn't win anything at the Grammys either. Look it up.
Monster was just an ad to sell St. Anger which was a complete finanical bust for Warner Brothers.
