JUDAS PRIEST On Track To Sell 70,000 Copies Of New Album In First Week - Mar. 2, 2005
JUDAS PRIEST are on track to sell about 70,000 copies of their new album, "Angel of Retribution", in the U.S. in its first week of release, according to Hits Daily Double. PRIEST are reportedly seeing significant sales from their releases in the DualDisc configuration, with some retailers reporting that the DualDisc is outselling the standard CD release.

DualDiscs are a new entertainment product which combines music, film and video on a single, two-sided disc. The first side of every DualDisc contains a full-length audio album while the DVD side features a wide range of exclusive content such as the same album in enhanced sound (such as 5.1 Surround Sound or enhanced LPCM stereo), music videos, interviews, photo galleries, web links, concert footage, lyrics and more. DualDiscs play on existing CD and DVD hardware devices such as DVD players, car stereos, PCs, game consoles and CD players.

The DVD side of JUDAS PRIEST's "Angel of Retribution" DualDisc features a 30-minute documentary on the reuniting of the band as well as classic JUDAS PRIEST tracks recorded live in Spain in June 2004, including "Breaking the Law", "Diamonds and Rust", "Helion/Electric Eye", "Touch of Evil", "Metal Gods", "Hell Bent for Leather" and "Living After Midnight".

70,000 copies isn't to bad for a band with music that really doesn't fit into the music scene of today. So many of these great bands of the past put music it out and it just flops. Glad to see this doing well its a pretty decent album. I wouldn't as far as saying its great but any Priest fan should be happy with this effort.

I got the 2 cd thing like the_hellion. It seems like the dual disc, at least from the description above, has more stuff on it. Not only that, but it was 11.99 instead of 19.99. Oh well, money comes, money goes. If I didn't blow the extra 8 bucks on that, I probably would have on a cheeseburger on the way home.

I got the version with a CD and DVD. I'm not into the concept of two readable sides. As long as I can buy a regular version of an album, they can produce all the dualdiscs they want. I'm going to avoid them if I can. New Priest is sounding good after a couple of listens. Hell, even Revolution is starting to grow a little bit, and that was a little disappointing at first. You can't go wrong with Demonizer, Judas Rising and Hellrider.

Your DVD has the same as the dual dvd side. It actually has a 40 min documentary. Well, not quite, it has interviews with the band between the live songs. So really the live songs are on the disc twice, thats lame, they should have put 40 min of interviews in.

Oh well, the album kicks ass anyways!

I bought the DualDisc and had to take it back because it wouldn't work in my car. Thankfully, they were understanding and I got my money back and bought the Special Edition with separate Cd and DVD. Sorry ass Record company can shove them DualDiscs up there ass

COMMENT | 40-minute documentary more like 20 minutes

I got the separate CD and DVD package. Bleeding Earz is right - the live tracks are played within the documentary and are the same as those under the separate menu item for live tracks. This cuts interview time down to no more than 20 minutes, which is kind of misleading. Priest should have more to say after a 30-year career than a measly 20 minutes. I think Angel of Retribution is great but the separate DVD does not justify an extra eight bucks. 70,000 in one week is good - I think that's more than the total sales for Demolition, which I have seen reported at around 55,000. Maybe they are good for another album or two. If AOR was a flop Priest would surely be over.

I bought the dual disc - it wouldn't play on a Mac. iTunes doesn't want to know (not good news for those of us about to rock at their desks at work...). Took it back to the store and spring for the more expensive deluxe packaging double disc, which seems to be retailing for five bucks more. Either way you can relish the sheer majesty/stupidity of 'Loch Ness' and sing along with the lyric sheet. Or not. 'Angel...' starts off strong with 'Judas Rising', which is a less frantic 'Painkiller' with an anthem-chorus injection on the chorus. The album's lyrics are peppered with little nods to Priest classics past ("It's time to ram it down/Judgement for the tyrant.." etc. etc.) and plenty of "real/steel", "smoke/broke" and "decease/release" rhymes. All in all, it's a solid cheese fest that runs out of steam a little with middle-of-the album filler like 'Demonizer' and 'Wheels of Fire', both of which are both just as forgettable as you'd imagine. I'm coming round to Loch Ness. It staggers bac and forth across the line between stupid and triumphant and at least it doesn't sound like "more filler". Confess your terror of the deep!

I've finally got the hear ALL the songs.

My Favs are (in order):
Demonizer
Deal w/the Devil
Judas Rising
Wheels of Fire
Angel (yes I think this is a great song)
Eulogy
Lochness
Hellrider
Worth Fighting For
Revolution

Very "classic Priest" without sounding like an unreleased album from 15 years ago. Personally I would have preferred it it sounded more on the Testament side. I also like Halford's solo CD's better "Ressurrection" & "Crucible". The real test of time will be playing this CD while partying at Bike Week or house parties & seeing what "life experiences" become etched in time.

Those who grew up on this stuff will jump for joy about what's coming from their speakers. Those who were brought up on Nu Metal with it's shit ass solo's that have no direction just noise or better yet, lack of solo's period and drums that travel a million miles an hour and that's it, wont like it.

This is CLASSIC Priest and any Priest fan who has listened to the band from RockaRolla onward would recognize that sound in a second.

The Priest is back!!!

I hope they sell 100 fucking million copies as that would teach the youth and record companies of today were real music is. True Metal can be found, but it isn't all dressed up in costumes holding an aluminium bat as a instrument or spelling their name with a K.

Yup, 'Demonizer' *barely* has a chorus. 'Wheels of Fire' is no 'Riding On The Wind', and it's got the most generic "metal song about biking" lyrics ever. After the first few tracks, the album's more about tempos (here's a faster one, here's a slower one) than truly killer material. 'Angel's been done better ('Before The Dawn'), 'Hellrider' sounds pretty much like you'd expect a Priest song called 'Hellrider' to sound like in 2005 (heavy kick drums, Halford on the lower range, the chorus is the song title barked out a couple of times, plenty of meaty soloing with a little harmony lead break that could have been pushed a bit further forward, and probably would have been in an earlier era). 'Eulogy' only seems to be on there to showcase a few more moody tempos and work 'stained class' and 'the sentinel' into a lyric (there's no real song there). But don't get me wrong - what with the DVD it's a beautiful package and all. And Loch Ness is, again, a grower.

It's much cheaper!!! I'm fucking pissed that both versions suck. I hate dual discs, yet I refuse to pay $20 for a CD that comes with a worthless DVD that I'll never watch, and worse, in a digipak. You couldn't pay ME $20 to pollute my space with a digipak, not matter what 'quality' it is.

In other words, when is the "non-limited" edition coming out?

["it gets scratched too fast !!"] Yeah, that's exactly why Sony is pushing it. They know you'll have to replace it sooner.

That whole dualdisc conept is just stupid. The cd portion (as some have already pointed out) doesn't even play in all cd players. Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.....

I just bought my copy today. I guess some cd players don't work well with dualdisc, which is why they also have a "limited edition" (yeah right) out with 2 discs. It was twice the cost of the Dualdisc one I got. It plays fine for me! I told a couple friends today that Priest had a new record out, and that it was only $11 and came with a DVD. They'll be getting it before the end of the week (& sale).

with the comments about DualDisc sucking! I bought it yesterday, and while it works, I hate having that shit all on one deal. I woulda bought the 2-disc set but I am fucking broke. I had to scrape to get the dual-disc. The worst part about it is that there's no way to avoid getting fingerprints on it. Whoever invented that shit should be shot!

The album does kick ass though. I actually prefer the ballads. I think "Angel" is bad ass. But the heavy shit rules too--some of it sounds like they just picked up where "Painkiller" left off. Very cool!

I thought that my CD player was one of the ones that wouldn't play the Dual Disc format, but it turns out the CD player was fucked up, so no problems there. Not fond of the format, but yeah, it was a lot cheaper, so fuck it.

As to what I think of it-well, I said to a friend that if it merely sucked, it would be a 110% improvement over Demolition, and it doesn't suck. Angel of Retribution simply sounds like a Judas Priest CD-which is more than one can say about Demolition or Jugulator. True, there aren't any blasting at Mach 10 songs like on Painkiller, but these are solid, old school heavy metal songs. It proves how much Tipton and Downing missed Halford-the songwriting chemistry is far better this time.

And hey, I'll give Priest props for trying something like "Loch Ness"-at over thirteen minutes, it has to be one of the longest songs Priest has done if not the longest, and at this stage of their careers, you cant say they didn't take a risk. I can see where some might see it as being safe, but let's face it-a lot of bands have spent the past 15 years recording CDs that sound like Painkiller Part 2-why copy something others have already done.

Good CD...hope they come near me on the tour.
