DAMAGEPLAN/PANTERA: Unreleased Recordings, Video Footage To See Light Of Day
- Mar. 28, 2005
|
|
According to a recent online posting by DISTURBED drummer Mike Wengren, several DAMAGEPLAN- and PANTERA-related products are currently being planned for future release. Among the items that will reportedly see the light of day — either individually or as part of a box set — are the following: * DAMAGEPLAN DVD "Damagevision"* DAMAGEPLAN second album * DAMAGEPLAN "New Found Power" outtakes * PANTERA Home DVD Part 4 * PANTERA - Unreleased studio tracks from: "Cowboys From Hell""Vulgar Display of Power""Far Beyond Driven""Great Southern Trendkill""Reinventing the Steel"Tracks from what would have been PANTERA's next studio project after "Reinventing the Steel" * REBEL MEETS REBEL ( Dimebag and Vinnie Paul's side project with legendary country/western music artist David Allen Coe) It should be noted, however, that — with the exception of a second DAMAGEPLAN studio album (consisting of recordings originally meant to be used towards the band's follow-up to "New Found Power") — there has not yet been any confirmation from the PANTERA/ DAMAGEPLAN camp that the above-mentioned recordings will ever be made available to the public. In other news, Krank Amplification has a section on their web site dedicated to "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, featuring exclusive photos and video footage of the late PANTERA/ DAMAGEPLAN guitarist. Check it out at this location. (Thanks: www.VINNIEandDIME.com)

...don't get me that excited. Most of the time they are unreleased for good reason. In other words, they were not good enough to make the album to begin with. Pantera are due to remaster the catalog, throw in some sub par unreleased tracks on each one & bank some cash.

new found power didnt really blow me away as did the pantera albums, however i will say they were solid hard rock/metal recordings....plus with it being dimes last record, it certainly has some sentimental value to it. Any time i get to hear the dime and vinnie combo, i am almost guaranteed to hear something i will enjoy in one way or another; their chemistry was just a whole level ahead of the remaining competition for the most part.

PANTERA the greatest METAL band in history. It seems strange cause I'd never thought we would be talking PANTERA in a past context. Always hoped that 1 day there would be a reunion. Of course now we all know that will never happen. 1 thing can be said about PANTERA's fans they were the best. That's somthing u don't see with mediocre bands like slayer, maiden and crap like that! A lot of material gets pushed aside due to tracks being written in the studio, and there is only "so" many tracks that'll go onto the releases. Probably even less for the Pantera stuff, due to vinyl. Seems that a lot of the time, the tracks the band really wants on the released product, can end up cut. I for one will buy it if it's released. I'm here local to Dime's old stompin' grounds, and so the news about what's up with Dime's estate/family and such is still in the local music rags, and I do not feel that they'd do it "just" to cash a check. As for Dime, I went back over to visit the grave site, and it still affects me the same as it did days after he was laid to rest..... R.I.P.

Anxious to hear the un-released CFH tracks. I always wondered what other kinda stuff they would have put out in the same vein as that album. Home video Vol. 4 should be fan-fuckin'-tastic as well. Always loved those tapes. Also glad to see other fans of good country musicians. None of that post-'95 country stuff though, bleh.

No, there is no they...this is Vinnie. Vinnie has every right to do this. Hell, Dime even admitted that Vinnie is better in the studio than he is. Vinnie learned all that shit from his old man, and I bet they have enough material to last a few lifetimes.
Dime always had a recorder of somekind, most real musicians do, and this is not surprising to me at all, especially the new Pantera Home Video. This is not an attempt to cash in on Dime, this is an attempt to breathe life into metal, and to pay an everlasting tribute to Dime, Vinnie, Rex, Phil, Terrence, and all the rest that made it happen. Once again, I doubt they ever thought this would happen. RIP Darrell

Whilst it's true that the majority of tracks from the majority of bands remain unreleased for a reason, there are plenty of exceptions to this rule.
The Cult released a whole heap of unreleased stuff a few years ago in a box set, the majority of which was as good as, if not better than the material on the studio albums. The same goes for The Cure, many of their B-sides and unreleased tracks were as good as their singles. It completely depends on the band and/or sometimes the record label.
No disrespect to Dime, but the Damageplan stuff doesn't interest me at all. I would like to see the early Pantera records released officially though. Then you could track Dime's progression from playing real cheesy glam music, to playing harder edged stuff. That's truly inspiring - that one can start of playing in such a generic genre, then go on to become one of the most influencial guitar players in the history of metal.
Time will tell, it usually does.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, Dime will schooling us for years to come!!!!!!!!!!
" I'm the four-track King!" Dime roars. " I've pretty much always got a four-track with me and, on the rare occassions I don't, there's always my pocket recorder or the video camera. You never know when a riff idea is gonna come your way, so I try to always be prepared to capture them.
" I can't recommend getting a four-track enough, man! I used mine every damn day since I got it, its a total release, and the funny thing is, when your dicking around with no real preassure, thats when you invariably hit gold."

" Vinnie is the guy who followed in my oldman's footsteps in the recording studio right of the bat. Hes a complete gear and gadget hound, and really knows his way around a studio. In fact, Vinnie is partly responsible for my recorded sound."

( dumbass feret wrote this above)
So everyone who plays guitar starts out playing heavy? No dumbass it's called maturing. WHY people keep bringing up what DIME done when he was 17 and 18 is beyond me. Wouldn't those earlier releases have been put to CD by now if they were good? They were teenagers who lived in DALLAS trying to get pussy by playing r-n-r and that is so bad? NO! Cock Rock had its place just like Alternative, grunge and nu metal. Who the fuck wants everyone listening to the same thing?

Every band has songs that don't make an album. It's a collective agreement between the band members and the label. Just because a song didn't make the cut doesn't mean it wasn't as good. I for one usually don't like the single a band puts out as much as other songs. I tend to like obscure songs on albums.
Dime always had his camera on and there was no doubt that another home video would see the light of day wether it be with Dime here or not. If Vinnie okays it it's good enough for me. I will be there 100%.
All his unreleased stuff should see the light of day. As a fan I appreciate all his playing and am interested in hearing anything he did. Weather it be better, just as good or not as good as whatever they've done I would still love to hear it. Dime was the man and will forever be thge man in my eyes.

I'm positive that Dime would want this released to all the fans, 'cause he loved the fans, and he loved the music. Hearing Dime play new stuff will be awesome, and the Home Video 4 will be fantastic. Dime always knew how to have a great time and because of his video camera and a great sense of humor, all the fans get to see the stories & not just hear about them.
I've been trying to get myself together since the B.L.S. show Friday, we all drank too much, too long, and I've had to pay for it the past couple of days, but this news sure makes me feel alot better. Where on Earth did you get the idea that I was bashing Dime's early work? I said it was "inspiring" that someone could go from playing glam cheese to playing thrash. That's a compliment not an insult.
Those CD's were released on CD by the way, but from what I've heard Phil bought the rights to them and won't let them be released, because he's ashamed of what Pantera used to be. Which is of course completely immature and retarded. Surely if Pantera started off playing glam and evolved into what they did on 'Vulgar Display Of Power' that's a good thing? Why be ashamed of it? Wait a minute... maybe because that would require being able to have a sense of humour about what you did like 5 years ago... Aye, that'll be it. Remmember, the five top rules for a metalhead -
1) Have no sense of humour at all 2) Always say anything that sounds commercial is gay 3) Even if a band is genuinely talented, if they sell records they're gay 4) Always jump and attack other people's posts without even contemplating what they have to say (otherwise you're gay). 5) Repeat step one. 6) Being in a room full of men, watching five blokes sweat on stage, standing with your arms folded and looking like you've got something stuck up your arse isn't gay.
Whether Dime's early stuff will be released or not now is uncertain. It's a shame as even in his early years Dime was a great guitarist, even playing Glam. As an added bonus the album 'Power Metal' is the only Panter album where Phil actually sings and does Halfordesque screams, instead of trying to sound like a constipated rhino.
HAIL METAL !!! HAIL BEING ILLITERATE !!!

Have you ever listened to the song, "Cemetary Gates," off Pantera's Cowboys From Hell album?
Phil DOES sing on that track and he DOES do Halfordesque screams at the near end of the song.
On a side note, I'm looking forward to getting the new Damageplan album and all the other stuff listed in the article once the Pantera/Damageplan camp confirms their releases. Nobody is cashing in on Dimebag Darrel. This is what Dimebag would have wanted because he always loved sharing his music with people and wanted his music to be heard by the public.

I really want to see the DVDs from both Pantera and Damageplan. But I'm not as interested in the music unless it is stuff they worked on in the studio. As soon as I found out he died I thought, "At the record company meeting, On their hands a dead star. So they repackage, reissue, repackage...re-evaluate the songs."
I'm not into getting something that Dime felt wasn't ready yet, just because I miss him. He had standards and that is why none of that was out yet.
I'm thinking of seeing a therapist. I'm just heartbroken. Peace to all the Dime fans, Pantera fans, and Damageplan fans....

I stand corrected. Just listened to 'Cemetary Gates', I forgot how good that song is. And yes Phil is on form on that track, most of the album too to be honest.
Does anybody know at what point Pantera stopped playing the early material in their setlists? I'm just curious.
