Former TROUBLE/ZOETROPE Drummer BARRY STERN Passes Away - Apr. 2, 2005
Former ZOETROPE/TROUBLE drummer Barry Stern has sadly passed away. Stern, who was said to be recovering from recent hip-replacement surgery, was believed to be in his mid-40s. "He was a close friend and the reason I discovered the Chicago metal scene," SOIL guitarist Shaun Glass told BLABBERMOUTH.NET. "I was a huge ZOETROPE fan back in the day and I just got him on the guest list for the Dime [benefit] show here [in Chicago in late February]."

Stern played drums and sang on the first two ZOETROPE albums — 1985's "Amnesty" and 1987's "A Life of Crime" — before leaving to join the Chicago doomsters TROUBLE prior to the recording of their classic 1990 self-titled offering. He stuck around long enough to appear on the follow-up effort, 1992's "Manic Frustration".

I'm sorry to hear this news. My condolences to his family and his former band mates and friends. I was lucky enough to meet him once outside of one of the 3 shows I caught them play in New Orleans during 1990-1992. Super nice guy and a great drummer. His work on the self titled TROUBLE album and on "Manic Frustration" album was just fantastic. He will be missed. As the song says, "R.I.P."...

Very sad indeed. I remember seeing Barry's first band Zeotrope opening for Anthrax and Raven in Chicago in 84. He was a great drummer and an all around nice guy. Trouble just got back together and I'm sad I won't be able to see him perform again. Rock on in the afterlife if there is one.

I remember getting into Zoetrope about 20 years ago when the first album came out thinking how crazy it was to have a singing drummer in a thrash band. I got to see Barry play drums with Trouble and also with Debris Inc. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

One of my roomates is very good friends with Barry, no joke, and now I get to tell him this news :( .

Barry was one hell of a character, a fuckin' rock-solid drummer, and one of the most down to earth, no bullshit people i've ever had the pleasure of meeting and partying with. This is rotten news, and my thoughts and prayers go out to Barry's family, bandmates, and his friends, some of whom are in my very own home.

Barry, my bud', you will be deeply missed. I will burn one for you tonight, Brother. With deepest remorse, Jimmie

I'm from Chicago and hung around Barry(and all of the Chicago metal bands) back in the early eighties. Would watch Zoetrope play to 10 people on a weeknight sometimes (The Whale,The Nail) and he always had a positive attitude regardless. He was a great guy. Always honest, down to earth and a great "metal historian" would talk about the "album" of the day in a knowledgeable way. Very sad when someone my age who I used to hang around with passes.

He was a great drummer, and a cool guy. I replaced him at a job after he left trouble and he was cool about it, offered me advice(told me to leave I should have listened to him. Pavement music SUCKS!) Seriously 2 or 3 weeks in to the gig and I was still able to call him for help. R.I.P.

This is a horrible loss. Many people never knew of his name, but Barry and Trouble influenced so many of todays metal bands. Even bands like Metallica. This is a sad, sad day. Another metal brother taken long before his time. I can't believe this...

Y'know, with all due respect to Dimebag, Barry was really playing the heaviest fucking music every written in Amerca while Darrel was still doing mainstream glam. I'm sure Darrel would be the first to admit it, too.

I never knew or met Barry, but I saw him play with Trouble on the Danzig Lucifuge tour and he was just awesome. I remember buying Zoetrope's Amnesty on vinyl import the week it came out and just being floored by his performance, too. Nobody matched his balls-out drumming and simultaneous vocal style, either. Not even Dan from Exciter. I have a couple of very nice, very down-to-earth, friendly and talented musician friends who were lucky enough to play with him in various bands: Trouble, Cathedral and Zoetrope and they both loved Barry's musicality and talent but they loved him as a person, too.

Here's to a true Heavy Metaller, and a great American artist.

Thanks Barry!!

On behalf of Chicago Rebel Radio, and myself I would like to send condolences to Barry Stern, his family, and friends.

I first heard about Zoetrope by seeing Jason Newsted sporting a shirt for the album Amnesty in a 1988 newspaper clipping.

I moved to Illinois in 1987, and got into Trouble in 1989. The self-titled 1990 album, and Psalm 9 are my favorite Trouble albums.

I knew various musicians on the local circuit who opened for Zoetrope and Trouble, and who partied with him at various forest preserves.

I remember when Trouble used to get airplay on various Chicago Metal Radio stations like WVVX, and Chicago Rebel Radio. Probably Z-Rock too.

"Mercenary" was the first Zoetrope song I heard. I still own Amnesty on cassette.

Zoetrope and Trouble paved the way for the Chicago Metal sound, and established a cult-like following.

Once again, R.I.P. Barry. Another great musician, and partier taken too soon from us.
