MASTODON Sign With WARNER BROS.
- Apr. 7, 2005
|
|
According to the U.K.'s Terrorizer magazine, MASTODON have inked a worldwide record deal with Warner Bros. Records and are expected to issue a new album in early 2006. MASTODON, currently in the midst of a U.S. headlining tour, just completed work on a video for "Blood and Thunder" with director Jonathan Rej. The video, described as "far-and-away different than most any modern day music video", is expected to make its world network premiere(s) imminently. As previously reported, MASTODON has been added to Ozzfest 2005, where they will join BLACK SABBATH, IRON MAIDEN, ROB ZOMBIE and others for the 10-year anniversary of the heralded festival.

Follow the same path of Lamb of God and release a sub par album after signing for a major label.

Warner has put out some of the greatest albums of all time. Here's hoping Mastodon is their next jewel in the rough. I hope Relapse got a little buy-out cash from this, they deserve it. 2006 -- Mastodon coming to an arena near you!

make a difference, in terms of mastodon's music. i dont think they would have signed with a major unless they had total discretion over their own music (like Lamb of God). the problem with L.O.G.'s album was that it was rushed, because Epic felt like it needed to cash in quick....hopefully Warner wont do the same to Mastodon, and will give them time to craft a hell of an album. They deserve the accolades anyway. Good for them

what some of the problems are, when it comes to dealing with a major label. Isn't Metallica on Warner? I'm very curious as to whether or not this is an exclusive signing, or if Relapse will have a spoon in the bowl for another album or two.
Mastodon read their own press, they know what the critics and fans think of them. They also have worked with some extremely knowledgeable people in the business (Steve Austin, in particular), and it's not like they don't have managers looking out for them. If they thought signing to Warner could really hurt them, musically or otherwise. They wouldn't do it. Period.

Mastodon, as everyone above said this is great as long as Mastodon don't water their sound down any.

I heard rumors on relapse's message board a month or two ago that Mastodon might be signing with a major label, so the rumor were true. they are a talented band and do deserve the success for their hard work. i really hope they dont water down their music for mass appeal. there were some stories in choosing death about bands who signed with major labels got screwed over when they didn’t sell x amount of records, hopefully nothing like that will happen to them. carcass came out with heartwork when they signed with columbia records, so hopefully mastodon will put out a great record with warner.

I'm sure the $$$ was right, or they wouldn't have done it. Morbid Angel's classic "Covenant" and "Domination" were put out by Warner (Giant).

just kidding ;) I really like the records, but it wasn't until I saw them live a few weeks ago that I truly understood what a great band they are. They blew me away. I've seen a lot of shows this year, including three days at the Inferno Festival, but that was easy the best show of 2005 until now. Can't wait for the new album

As an employee of WBR, let me just say - we are all THRILLED about signing Mastodon. The CEO himself flew to Norway when they were on tour there, to prove to the band how much he wanted them. As far as the A&R guy - he's about as big a Mastodon fan as they come and loves the new record just like all of us. His intentions are to get them on better tours and make the sickest records ever. So Warner Bros. is a major label? All the early Sabbath and Van Halen records were put out by WB. Also, what happened when Pantera signed to the Warner Music Group? They made some of the greatest heavy music ever.

that guy is right. Static-X 'machine' was a pretty extreme album for a major label release. i think the majors have learnt that watering down the band's sound actually works against them. hell Sony didn't tamper with COF did they? things are changing guys. accept it. as far as Mastodon go, can't say i'm OVERLY surprised at this since 'Leviathan' went down with the mainstream rock press too. it seems praise was coming from all angles. And rightfully so too i might add!

Mastodon should do well. Remember that all "artistic freedom" and stuff like that is done in contracts, so when a band ends up with problems, it's usually either their fault or their lawyers fault. As long as they have lawyers and management they believe in, they should be fine.

I have similar concerns regarding the music on their next album as well...Mastodon aren't masters at song arrangements to start out with and big label lovin' might just tear the edges away from some of what makes a 4 minute mastodon song seem epic.....I am also worried that they will be pushed to have some over-designed shitty photoshop album cover and artwork from here on out...their last two albums are some of the ONLY metal albums to have been released in the past five years that boasted truly amazing cover art. 99.9% of metal album covers are shit. here comes mastodon who not only put a painting on the cover of their debut full length, but for the next album, a painting by the same guy who did the last! wow! do i sense a bit of creative integrity?! anyway....regardless, i'm sure we'll all buy the next album and throw the devil horns in our bedrooms while headbanging.
