THE DARKNESS Angered Over BRITS Snub

BBC Radio One is reporting that THE DARKNESS frontman Justin Hawkins is peeved about not being nominated at this year's prestigious Brit Awards, even though it took place in February.
Last year THE DARKNESS won three awards but Justin's mad they didn't even get recognized in the Best Live Act category this year, which was eventually won by MUSE.
"I'm bitter about the Brits, I really am," he said.
"We've sold 130,000 tickets for thirteen dates. It's more than anybody else that year and we weren't nominated.
"I see that as a snub, I think the British music industry has learnt from what we've done and said 'Right, we've learnt from them now let's discard them.'
"Well, fuck you. We're coming back and there's nothing you can do about it."

truth rains doesn't win the thread i do. darkness fucking rock, you are close minded. someone is being too serious to enjoy the happiness they bring, their concerts are fun. I met them, they were very cool as well. people underestimate them completely, theres so much false judgement upon them musically and style wise. They can play their instruments and they aren't copying anyone, they are simply playing music that stemmed from a wide variety of great influences. they can entertain. As for winning awards, they always get the piss out of everything because they aren't trendy like other bands that happen to win em. they should be happy, they know they rock.

they forgot how the industry works... you only get one chance buster.. and your time is up! now go on to some underdog label and release some more serious heavy rock, then you'll get some worthwhile recognition... not some gay brit prize... for all I know top prize is an Anal Fistfuck... most brit rock bands live for this...

Why? Real fucking simple. They play melodic good time old-fashioned hard rock, songs about love and partying and having good times and all that. The critics just hate that. They want some New York "underground" rockers dressed in too tight jeans and matching denim jackets, or skinny blazers, who sound like they've just met yesterday, and picked up some random instruments. All the more better if the band has a serious heroin addiction, who cares if the songs sound like they were recorded on a shitty Casio ghettoblaster and the songs make Nirvana sound like Mozart. Also, critics love drug-addled arty British groups, singing songs with angular, twisted melodies (the kind you can't sing along to, as opposed to the pub anthems of The Darkness everyone with enough beer in them will want to sing along to) about feeling shitty on too many shit drugs. Groups like Radiohead or Muse, the kind nobody ever has a bad word to say about, like they're the second coming of god. The critics just can stand a band that plays music for the people, songs that are meant for the ordinary guy to have some fun to on a saturday night. Trashy production, melodies that sound like they were created by randon numeber, drug addiction and lyrics about self-loathing, now that's the ticket if you wanna impress the music critics of the world. Fuck 'em!

but muse headlined two major festivals (including glastonbury!) and sold out earls court for two nights in a row ... id say that made them the more worthy band.
plus muse are actually better than the darkness

Okay, they're not the new Led Zeppelin, so what? To me, it's gool ole' basic rock'n'roll, played with real guitars and basses and drums. And they've certainly heard all the classic rock records everyone of us - those who've music other than just what's come out since System of a down - has loved and listened to a million times. Fuck this bullshit, when you don't feel good about hearing and seeing a band bust out the ole' Les Pauls and Marshalls and rock some simple, melodic, diatonic tunes, then there's something seriously wrong with you. Fuck you, if you can't handle a good band that doesn't take itself too seriously, that has a tongue planted well in-cheek, and that is simply playing homage to all the great melodic rock of the past. Fuck all you wankers, now go drop some ecstacy and listen to some junkie scum band. I'll crack open another pint of beer and turn up the stereo, blasting some real hard rock, and fuck all what's current all hip. Anyone who thinks they got shafted is an idiot. I really kind of like the Darkness, but to compare their music to Muse is a no-brainer. Muse isn't metal, but the guys in that band can fucking play their instruments, and they rock harder than half the bands on this forum (don't say thats not true if you haven't seen them live). And being the best live band doesn't mean you've sold the most tickets, and you won 3 awards before, so shut up and be grateful.

Sorry, I'm no big Darkness fan myself. They're no Queen or Zep, but that's not the issue here. To me, The Darkness isn't a shitstain on Van Halen's (early VH, that is) underwear. I'm fairly convinced there's a shitload of a lot better bands out there.
The thing that bothers me is these good hard rock bands don't get no recognition. At least the Darkness are trying, and the same cannot be said about all these fucking critics' darlings, playing either shitty NY "underground" garbage or shitty art rock. I wish some really good hard rock band got the shot, and not all these poseurs who copy their looks from shitty magazines and all that shit. I STILL think real hard rock gets no chance, while all this fucking garbage is filling up the airwaves. I'll always prefer good hard rock over the critics' darlings crap.

Dude I think you are mixing up New York underground "art rock" or whatever and grunge. I live in New York, and the fact is you are 100% saying they have melodies that you can't sing along with and shit like that. Alot of whats coming out from here is well written music, but its mostly indie rock and pop. But to say it has horrible production and bad melodies is stupid and ignorant.
And if you think Radiohead sucks, you are retarded, you don't have to like them, you just have to appreciate they have done some incredible stuff, and if you think that Radiohead is worse than The Darkness, then you are beyond all hope.

Sorry, I was kinda exaggerating and being ignorant. I know there's some great shit coming outta NY as well as the the Brit art music circuit. I guess I was just pissed and wrote some stupid shit. Damn, there's so much great stuff out there I can't even tell. Shit, I listen to Muse and Radiohead and NY stuff myself. I was just exaggerating to make the point, how so much of the current straight-forward old-fashioned hard rock gets no chance at all. I'm a big fan of rock'n'roll, and I think the Darkness deserve a shot, not just being shat at.

I like them, they have some quality stuff. I just cant stand the notion that Radiohead is god, and everyone else sucks. Radiohead's a good band, and that's for sure, I just have a problem with people who talk like they're god and everyone else's just shit. And that's just so far from the truth.

Critics love to slag a band that has a sure-fire can't miss sound and good catchy songs. The critics LOVE to be "cooler than all that" and dismiss this stuff-look at Grand Funk, Alice Cooper, Kiss, etc-it was obvious that these bands were "giving the people want they want" and critics love to hate that.
So what if the Darkness aren't "metal"? They have a really strong album full of really catchy songs and great guitar riffs-and that takes talent to do. Obviously somebody at a record company saw the potential in what they were doing and got behind it completely-THAT'S what it takes to sell a zillion records.
And that somebody was obviously right.
So what if it's "formula"?? So is death metal, thrash metal, doom metal, country western and disco.
And if they turn out to be a flash in the pan, so what? That means all the naysayers are right, and that the guys in The Darkness can retire-in style.
I wish I had a little teensy slice of that kind of success.
