Former JANE'S ADDICTION Guitarist Honored

ABC ePrep is reporting that former JANE'S ADDICTION/RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS guitarist Dave Navarro will receive the Stevie Ray Vaughn Award at a May 20 benefit concert for MusiCares MAP Fund, which helps musicians recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. The award honors his support of the fund and his work in helping other artists overcome their addiction.
As previously reported, Navarro will participate in the keynote panel discussion at MusicExpo 2005, a music and media forum that will run from May 1 through May 4 in Los Angeles. Larry King will host the discussion, which will take place on May 2.
Navarro recently spent time in the studio working on the the debut album from THE PANIC CHANNEL — the new band featuring three quarters of the most recent lineup of JANE'S ADDICTION (Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins, and bassist Chris Chaney) and former SKYCYCLE vocalist Steve Isaacs.
THE PANIC CHANNEL's as-yet-untitled debut album is being recorded by producer/engineer Bryan Virtue, who worked on JANE'S ADDICTION's 2003 Capitol reunion album, "Strays".

I feel bad for Zakk Wylde, he has got to have the stupidest fanbase of anyone. Actually I don't feel bad because he asked for it.
Dave Navarro is an amazing guitarist. Every single fan of rock music should own "Strays." It is an absolute masterpiece of a hard rock album. Can't wait to hear this new stuff.

Navarro's guitar playing is weak in many aspects-his tone is processed to the poiint where it always sounds like he's using a Zoom Box-no matter what elaborate gear he may be using. His phrasing is weak and un-memorable. He is truly an example of a guy that was in the right place at the right time with the right image-this explains why he's ALWAYS referred to here as "former Janes Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro" and not simply "Dave Navarro". It's because his playing is so un-memorable that we have to associate him with the million-selling band he was once in. And we all know that sales figuree do not correlate with talent. Compare Janes' sales with say, Allan Holdsworth...
If Navarro's guitar playing is so great that you have to rate it by how good his wife looks, then that pretty much puts it in perspective. Navarro is a great "Rock Star" and an okay Musician.
Anybody here have any idea of what Stevie Ray's wife looked like?

...didn't you even read the article? He's not being rewarded for his guitar playing, but for his efforts in helping other musicians overcome addiction problems. It's an award for character, something many of you are seriously lacking. I like Zakk and BLS, I like Alan Holdsworth, and I like Dave's guitar playing. Jane's was one of my favorite bands, and his work on the Chili Pepper's "One Hot Minute" made it one of the only listenable records that band has ever recorded. I don't care how technically gifted some of these players are if they can't write a memorable riff or song.

"Strays" was great and Dave Navarro also helped the RHCP make their best album. Dave Navarro is a rare talent - an awesome guitarist who also knows how to write great songs.

I've got an old Guitar magazine ('89 maybe) where the mag plays a song and a guitarist (in this case Zakk) comments.....and even Zakk liked Navarro's playing and tone (go figure)....
....and just because something is difficult to play, doesnt make it good! I read recently Zakk Wylde talk about his own riffs and how easy they actually are to play......but they ROCK! That's what's important.....

I play guitar as well. You are an idiot. Dave knows how to play, if you've every seen things about him on TV where's he's just jamming on a acoustic or if you've ever hear him a rip a solo, he knows how to play. ANd his tone doesn't sound processed, whoever said that is a dumbass. I used to like Zakk, but honestly, his music is not very deep, yah, maybe its RAW, maybe he plays from the heart or whatever BLS fans say, that kind of bullshit, it doesn't mean his music's GOOD. My 4-year-old cousin can play a guitar from the heart, but people aren't going to care. Face it, Zakk is a fast player, he knows pentatonic licks (every seen that Paul Gilbert tape with the cheerleaders?), but saying that Dave is worse than him is pretty retarded and close minded. Not only do they play completely different styles of music, but at least Dave has some variety in his style, his riffs DO NOT sound the same in each song, and he can be vocal and can do some sweet solos.
And when the fuck was the last time Zakk struggled with a Heroine addiction and overcame it? Seems to me like he's embraced being an alcoholic, and Dave definitely deserves this award. Fuck you BLS idiot fans, I respect Zakk and used to like him, but you guys are such close-minded unsophisticated wannabe idiots, you must be turning off so many people from checking him out. You'll do Zakk a favor by shutting up.

Anyway, I think It's really pathetic that anytime someone with a screen name related to B.L.S. posts on here Zakk gets bashed. This isn't even a B.L.S. thread. As far as Dave goes, he's making a living playin' guitar and I guess he's helping some people with their drug problem, so he'll get a little respect from my camp. I know I'd rather have someone who battled and won their addiction help me than some fuckstick who don't know what it's like to have that shit comsume you and take over everything thats important in your life.
You people can hate on Zakk all you want, fact is he's one of the coolest people in the world, he's respectful to all his fans, and the playin' on his CD's is just a small dose of his ability. The man is one of the greatest guitarists and piano players I've ever seen or heard about. Zakk is a man who will admit when he's wrong and is loyal to his friends no matter what, and I know loyality, honor, and friendship is in short supply these days. Because of this, that makes Zakk all the more a great human being over most of the self absorbed musicians playin' today. So this being said I hope some of you will take it for what it's worth, and if you don't agree with someone's post...take it up with them.

i think about the only thing worse than a BLS fan is a GNR fan. and Morbius76 is probably right about his BLS on Ozzfest every year claim. why else would they be on the tour for what, the last 5 years in a row at least? it's not like they've really earned it technically.

But yeah, that does suck when people rag on Zakk just because of something someone with a BLS-related name says that they don't agree with. I mean, it'd be a different story if someone posted shit under the name 50_Cent or something like that... THEN they'd be asking for it...

Someone finally has realized how talented this man is.

He's GOOD. Not great. Literally indistinguishable from thousands of other guitarists wanking away at Guitar Center on any Saturday afternoon.
When you hear Zakk, you know it's him.
When you hear Angus Young, you know it's him.
When you hear Jimi, or Eddie, or any truly GREAT player, they are easily identifiable. But not Dave Navarro. Take him out of context, hear him anonomously, and you'll say- "this guy's okay"
Navarro's just average at best.
He's good. But not good enough to be considered great.
