MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE Checks In With GIGANTOUR Update - Apr. 12, 2005
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has posted the following message in the "Forums" section of the group's official web site:

"I thought I would start to inform you of what you can expect from the Gigantour Festival this summer.

"First off the set times on the main stage will be approximately 90 minutes for MEGADETH and DREAM THEATER each, 45 minutes for FEAR FACTORY, and 30 minutes each for DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and NEVERMORE.

"We are hoping to have a second stage of talent and as of now there is a list of fourty bands that want to be part of this wonderful summer excursion. Each one of those bands would play approximately 20 minutes, excluding the headlining band for the second stage, which would be around 30 minutes.

"We are going to play in many cities that we may have missed last trek, and so far the dates total 32, but that may grow depending on the demand from you, the fans, and from the promoters who believe.

"We plan on doing everything that we can to give you a chance to be with us backstage; we are talking about preferred seating through the fan club, meet and greet passes, food drives as a possibility, contest to be roadies for a day, and drawings for our gear and whatnot. As well as the obvious guest lists for the five main stage bands and the five second stage bands.

"We also would love to have local bands compete to play in an after-hours tent that all of the bands and crew would be socializing in among the guests, winners, and fan club members each night. This would depend on how involved each station is going to get. I foresee I will have to reach out to these stations myself, because if the singles were any indication of my relationship with them, I will have to get involved personally. I think you get the picture.

"I am actually excited about reaching out to each of these stations and talking to them about what is hot in their area and who they would like to have do this if we can pull it off. I do have my favorites, and there are a lot of long time supporters, as well as my new home station KIOZ, but I love this kind of stuff where I can pay back the stations that have supported me over the years. I really am grateful for all of the support and I love all of my friends at radio. I promise to give you a fantastic time this summer ladies and gents.

"On another note, I can't believe that it has been over a year since we started doing the final tracks for 'The System Has Failed', and I wish that we had had a better start on this record than we did, but I know that you are all mostly happy with the direction of the band and music, and also how we are as a unit live. I really can't wait until we can record some music together. In fact, we may release some live stuff from this tour, or even break out some new music that I have written since we formed in October 2004.

"We are contacting Jeff Balding about doing an edit on the next single, which will be 'The Scorpion', but I am sad to inform you that Sanctuary will not make a video for this song.

"Lastly, I met with our awesome lighting director Richard 'Shaggy' Ehmcke, about our stage set-up for Gigantour and we both agreed that we wanted to stay away from the predictable Rock Star pig stuff that you see at most festivals or big rock shows anymore. We are going to go for a more 'old school' look and this will also be the first time that I use projection and pyro.

"I know that I have said some things about pyro in the past, regarding bands that overuse it, so we want to make sure that there is just enough to matter, but not too much to over do it. I will never forget touring with a band in the '80s that used pyro like it was going out of style, and how lame they looked when they couldn't get the license from the fire marshall in certain cities. The keyboardist hit his piano and it went 'BOOM!' I was totally convinced it was a real explosion! I think that the cognac had something to do with it.

"The projection is something that the old pros of DREAM THEATER are used to, but will be a first for us, so we are going to have to get used to it. I did see a quote form 'Keif Richards' that said, 'all you have to do is wink at the camera and people in the back row have made a connection.' Well, I hope to be doing more than winking at the lovely Droogs and Wolves.

"Keep the ideas coming for what you may want to see for summer merchandise, and I may ask for your help in picking the bands for the second stage. I will consider putting a list of the names of the bands up once we have finalized it down a bit. Remember, there is only going to be five bands a night on the second stage, and there are a few obvious bands that I can't consider.

"Lastly, I took James and Red (our drum tech) out for dinner tonight and we had a great talk about everything that is coming up this summer, fall, and winter. I really love my touring staff guys and can't wait to go into battle again with Gigantour. And if it works in North America, which it really looks like it is, I want to take it to South America, Europe/UK, the Pacific Rim, the Middle East, and hopefully one day into the great continent of Africa.

"Please keep us informed of your fan club status; that is the only way you are going to be able to get meet and greet passes for now. And I want to invite your ideas on merchandise, collectibles, and other neat items that you would like to see for the fan club. We are going to do a chat there soon too, so stay tuned."

Why not have half as many bands and let them play a full set? I mean, it's not like they're gonna get paid either way, right?

Megadeth should also function as a loan agency that will advance bands on the second stage their regular work paychecks for say +25%, and then get paid back when those bands go back to 7-11 after the tour. They could also rent them the station wagon they'll be driving from gig-to-gig in.

You summed it all with that, i'll be even more concise.

Drop Dillinger, give their time to Nevermore. WTF is 30 minutes of stage time for Nevermore when they can slay Megadeth on any given day?

I couldn't care less for Dillinger, I laug h already enough on any given day to endure another 30 minutes of comic relief.

To you morons going "ohhhhhhh Megadeth should have 20 mins Dillinger should headline!!!" Think about it, first, it's Megadeths tour... second... NONE OF THE OTHER BANDS ON THIS BILL HAVE THE DRAWING POWER OF MEGADETH WHETHER YOU LIKE THEM OR NOT... IT'S SIMPLE BUSINESS LOGIC...

Oh wait... I used a foreign term that most of you guys won't get... Logic...

Well, Dillinger and Nevermore will headline in all your fanboy wet dreams, but it won't happen this year in the real world... And if anyone is wondering, Nevermore is my favorite band on this bill, but I understand why they get the 30 minute set.

And trust me, if this tour goes well for them, bands like Nevermore and Dillinger will be getting bigger sets of bigger tours for years to come. So go out and support them anyway because you won't do them any good sitting at home having a hissy fit that Megadeth is top of the bill.

I like how people can shit on bands saying that they are band, yet these bands are some of the most talented bands out there right now. Dream Theater has one of the best guitarist ever, along with a sweet drummer. Dilinger Escape Plan, even though I am not really a fan, I have to admit that they have some really complex compositions and from what I have heard put on an intense live show. Nevermore is just fucking sweet and talented thrash, which kicks a lot of ass. And Fear Factory has such a sweet fucking drummer... listen to his double bass, he is one of the best double bassists out there. AND MEGADETH they are freaken legends. Anybody who complains about this tour is stupid, you don't know good when you see it.

I really don't think they should even put a second stage on there though. Too much disappointment is sure to happen.

One more thing... I like how everyone here hates Dave Mustaine because of his personallity, I forgot how he acts offstage really has an effect on the music that he plays. "I hate Dave because he talks a lot." Forget the fact that he shreds and plays like a fucker, and only base your opinion of how you like him and the rest of Megadeth on the fact that he gets publicity. Your reasoning for music is soooo good guys.

30 minutes is a perfect amount of time to get to the beer tent, endure a lineup and get back to the front stage for this show. I should be able to do this during Dillinger Escape Plan's set and have enough room to see the real talent instead.

Assuming the show comes anywhere near me that is.

What the fuck isn't metal about Dillinger Escape Plan? How about one of you guys give a reason they suck. Everybody has their own opinion, which is cool, but not a single one has given any reason, just saying something suck doesn't make it so. I think a lot of you guys have probably never heard them, but have heard they are a "hardcore band." Which they aren't, really. I'm sure you're the same fucks who say that Meshuggah "sucks".

Half of you are talking shit, but more than a few of you will be going to the show anyway. Quit talking shit. People should be happy that one of the biggest names in metal makes continued efforts to talk to his fans, and listen to ideas (though he may not like them), and thank his fans every time he posts (which is frequently) for supporting him and metal all around. How many big name metal musicians do you know do this? In fact, how many "rock" musicians do it? Not many I dare say. I don't care for half the bands he's announced either, but I"m sure as fuck going.

Okay, after that little outburst, IF mustaine, big IF, added something like Death Angel, or Hirax, I think things would be more balanced. When was the last time you saw HIRAX? Pretty harsh, and Death Angel NEVER got a good tour after their last one, The art Of Dying. Shame for that. I can even see or tolerate Dream Theater....but Dillenger? So what if they have crazy time signatures...and odd song compositon. Don't mistake talent for genius.

I doubt that I'll go to this, I don't care to see FF or Dream Theater that long.

Hell, at least you guys in the states are getting SOMETHING. All the shows you get, and you STILL bitch and nitpick, while the whole rest of the world has to make do with shitty local bands, and the occasional international band who decide to "Grace" us with their presence, and expect us to tongue their balls for it?

Jesus Christ, be good and goddamn greatful for what you're getting. I'll wager there are very few people out there that would like EVERY band on this bill, but that's the whole fucking point. A little something for everyone. I would gladly jam a pencil in my eye if someone could guarantee me that I would never have to hear the Dillinger Escape Plan again in my life, but obviously they have an audience amongst some Megadeth fans (myself notwithstanding).

Seeing as some of you people seem to think YOU could organise a better tour package, why don't you go ahead and give it a shot.

Bottom line: This will truly Rule, and the ones being positive and not complainin' and bitchin' are smart enough to see. And I say, have faith in Dave, because certain things can change, and maybe your favorite (as if they're not all pretty much good, anyway) band might be given more time for their set. Either ways, go out and support this Gigantour, for it is a great way to promote some real Metal and Music in general....
