ESQUIRE Magazine: We Weren't Making Fun Of DIMEBAG's Death
- Apr. 22, 2005
|
|
Esquire magazine has issued a response to the criticism of its April 2005 issue in which writer Brian Frazer appeared to be poking fun at the murder of PANTERA/ DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott. The last page of the magazine contained an article headlined "This Way Out" featuring a pyramid of "Recommended Daily of Vice." At the top was a section called "Use Sparingly" and in it was "Shooting ex-guitarists from PANTERA." A scan of the Esquire page in question can be found at this location. In response to countless letters from Dimebag fans criticizing the article, Esquire has sent out the following form letter offering their explanation for the story: "We're sorry you're offended by the 'This Way Out' page in the April issue of Esquire. "We do want to point out, however, that the target of the offending joke was not Darrell Abbott. We feel nothing but sympathy for his friends, fans, and family. The target of the joke was the deranged man who shot him. His was a horrible and reprehensible act, as are many of the other 'vices' mentioned in the article."

They should have said " I guess we just didn't realize how sensitive heavy metal fans are"
Honestly guys, did that article really matter to you?
Yes, it was good of them to release that statement, but they're just trying to keep thier sales....

That was totally tasteless & uncalled for. They knew what they were doing when they printed it. We all know that Esquire magazine does NOT cater to the metal crowd at all. Instead they are a magazine that supports the superficial world of trends which is the exact opposite to the true metal philosophy.

Yeah, right. Excuse me, but who the fuck listens to Pantera and reads Esquire anyway? It was totally tasteless of them to say, but who cares what they say anyway? The only thing I find surprising is they thought their readers would get the reference.

Blabbermouth has a voice. We have the power to make a magazine whose target audience is the yuppie crowd and make them apologize. That is a power that could be tapped if you think about it.

When the pope died, nobody poked fun at him. People would get too angry and frustrated. When anybody dies, they don't put anything up, because it might offend. Damn right they should have apoligized for that. That had to of offended some people close to Dimebag and it was seriously uncalled for.
RIP DIMEBAG!!!!!

No one made fun of the pope? Here's one right here: http://poststuff4.entensity.net/042005/image.php?pic=pope1.jpg
Maybe all you "offended" babies should email that site because of how offended you are about them making a joke about the dead pope.
If you don't, I guess you just have double-standards.

I'm convinced that all the mail that Esquire recieved on the Dime comment was from BBmouth, and I would like to thank everyone that sent them a comment about it. It was distasteful and It actually upset me...the pic of the guitar more than anything...so heres to all you who remember Dime in a respectful manner.

hostile emotions that are driven by heated blind love and faith. Take for instance the Vietnam Vet who spit in Jane Fondas face. She posed in a Viet Kong air craft destroyer and gave a note from a POW to the prison offical. That is truly thoughtless and cruel. Now look at Esquire, they didnt mean to in anyway take a dig on Dime. However all the passionate fans were rabid because of there love and sadness. I am glad that everyone wrote them. The media should be held accountable. I just dont think that was meant in anyway to be hurtfull.

"We do want to point out, however, that the target of the offending joke was not Darrell Abbott."
Yeah.. right... feeble attempt at spin on your part.
"Shooting ex-guitarists from Pantera"
Care to name who you meant then?
Oh.. Nathan Gale..
A man who was known to be mentally ill yet didn't get the treatment he required.
So you're mocking the mentally ill now too?
Nice of you to mock people who don't show up on your yuppie radar.
You really need some serious help in the humour department.
I have to admit it, you and your magazine are an outstanding example of an out of touch service which caters to a generally out of touch demographic.
Get a real job in the real world.
Then you might actually have a clue.

Hell, even the guitar with bullet holes bore absolutely no resemblance to Dime's trademark Cadillac-X. I guess they weren't counting on any Pantera fans reading their shitty, trend-whoring magazine.

Yes, it's a double standard. If you're so irritated by a joke such as this from a magazine you care nothing about, why aren't you all in such outrage over EVERY JOKE made about a dead person?
And I sure as hell hope everyone here that's so outraged by this NEVER laughs at a joke about a person's death, because then you're only a hypocrite.

Dude, I hate to hear when anyone dies, of any cause, espically if they have talent. I make no jokes about it...no matter who it is. The family of the deceased don't need to be surfin' the internet, click on a thread and find a bunch of asses talkin' shit about their friend or family member.

There's a world of difference between the death of someone who died accidentally or of natural causes, and someone who was MURDERED. Making fun of someone who was murdered (let alone in such a public, cold-blooded and vicious way) is about as low as you can get.
On the other hand, anyone dumb enough to get crushed to death by a vending machine whilst trying to rock it (to get a free can of Coke) or who sticks their face in Tiger enclosure DESERVES to be humiliated to the grave and beyond. But I reiterate... to try for a feeble attempt at humour at the expense of someone who was MURDERED (perhaps assassinated would be a better word) is the ultimate in parasitic journalism.

it's for trendy gay yuppies...we deserved an appology, now lets forget about them/it and let them go back to advising guys how to look like little girls.
on another note...the idea of tapping the masses that post here on b'mouth to get metal into the media on a positive note and more fuckin often could be a good idea. I just don't want it to get trendy to all the lost little kids, and become a mainstream thing. if you all stopped to think about it, we're really the last of the unaccepted lifestyles out there that there's nothing wrong with...i'm not quite ready to give that up yet.
oh yeah and i do get offended when people laugh at dead people. I haven't cracked a joke yet about the pope...but i had plenty to say about him when he was alive...honestly how can you elect someone to play god on earth....wouldn't that be up to someone/thing else???
