SLIPKNOT Bassist Forced To Miss Band's Iowa Homecoming
- Apr. 24, 2005
SLIPKNOT bassist Paul Gray was forced to mix the band's latest central Iowa homecoming Saturday night (April 23) at Hilton Coliseum in Ames after being hospitalized for an unspecified reason, according to singer Corey Taylor's announcement from stage. Gray is reportedly due to make a speedy return to the tour, which performed in front of 5,053 maggots at the Iowa venue (the back of Hilton was curtained off to lend the show a more intimate feel).
"Thank you so much for making a dream come true for a bunch of guys from Iowa," was how Taylor said goodbye, according to the Des Moines Register.
Then the band posed for a photo on stage with the arena of fans as their backdrop — holding up Gray's mask in the photo in his absence.

so now commence..

( the back of the Hilton was curtained off to lend the show a more intimate feel ) ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME !!!!! i'm sure SLIPK(not) told the Coliseum to stop selling tickets at 5,000 people at a homecoming show so it had a more intimate feel. What it should of read WAS !!! (The back of the Hilton was curtained off BECAUSE SLIPK(NOT) COULD NOT SELL ENOUGH TICKETS TO FILL A COLISEUM)and the fucking place looked empty. Don't get me wrong 5000 is a nice crowd. Just don't print this BULLSHIT about wanting an INTIMATE CROWD.They booked this place thinking they were gonna sell it out.and came up about 10,000 people short.

I would like to add a few things though. I really fucking hope this bass player, or any other member of slipknot dies. Anything to shut this music and genre up is a big help.

Paul had to miss the denver show too. Corey said a bunch of people backstage were covering his part. When he would get the crowd fired up, he'd say "let's make some fucking noise so loud, that Paul can hear us, wherever he is!" It was cool.

They're getting tired of touring, that's what I think. I really don't believe they're so unlucky they have to get hospitalized all the time. They're making it up!

Paul's bass tech is playing all parts from behind the curtain so that the band isn't misrepresented. All of your speculation about why he is missing is wrong. Keep on guessing. I would tell you but it is not my business to tell. Took 3 shows without him before you all found out here today. I saw the show in Portland and it was fucking amazing. All 3 bands ripped. Check out this tour if you haven't already.

And it's not very hard for a bottom heavy group of tape-playing backing track infested spoiled rich rock stars to keep the pre-recorded bass track going, I promise.
COMMENT | drew0405 posted by : CED666 4/24/2005 3:16:20 PM
Actually, they have been doing that at all the shows. Not because they can't sell the tickets, but because the stage is placed towards the middle-back of the arena. Now tell me, how many people do you know who would want to go to a show be sitting in the seats where the only thing you can see is the back of the stage? It's funny how many people agreed with you, it shows the average intelligence level here. I bet if this was a band you liked, you would have never said it.
How do you know that was a pre-recorded bass track, sterileyes? Where you there, or is this just another biased comment made towards this band? Trust me, the majority of the crowd would be able to differenciate pre-recorded and live sound.
I love how some of you think that just because you don't like a band, that the band members need to stop making music and die. I can't imagine a more ignorant thing to say from such people who deem themselves higher on the food chain than other music lovers. I guess because I wasn't a huge fan of Damageplan, Dimebag deserved what he got? Right? Some of you should spend more time focusing on the music you like, than bitching about what you don't.
Yea, it's just as ignorant. Now let's watch as the dumbasses here misinterpret what I say and call me names.

No !! This is called a theater set up in most big arena's This set up is for bands that are booked into big arena's and tickets sale's aren't good.Or smaller bands that are on the brink of breaking, and if they do they can push the stage to the back and sell the rest of the arena. Some arena's have a trap that covers the upper deck all together and the band will just play to the lower part of the arena.Like I said in my post 5000 is a good crowd. But don't sugarcoat it by saying ,we're playing in an intimate setting.Did the show sellout. NO !! so they played to as many people they wanted to see them.Trust me there would not of been a curtain (or Intimate setting as they call it ) if they would have sold another 5000 tickets. Then we would be hearing how SLIPK(not) play to a sold out 10,000 plus on the home coming gig (RIGHT) And just so you know I have seen many bands I like do this.Last to come to mind Van Halen. But I never heard once how They played to a Intimate setting. All I heard was how bad the tour was doing selling tickets. If the what to play to a INTIMATE setting, play clubs or theaters that seat between 1000 and 3000 seats.not 10,000 plus arena with a curtain. When they booked that gig they did not want to put a curtain up.They thought they would sell the place out.And when tickets didn't sell it became a INTIMATE NIGHT WITH SLIPK(NOT)

it wasn't the bands choice, i hope you knew that, nearly nothing nowadays is the bands choice...

I can't say I'm the biggest fan of them, but they're listenable. Conceptually they're laughable, but professional musicians none the less. They fuckin go out on the stage and give 110% + every time, and yet some people can't get passed that they reached a pinnacle of success that most bands never will. They play to those who like the music, and fuck whoever doesn't. They never wanted to cater to you anyway. So on thier behalf, fuck you all! I'm all for freedom of speech but who the hell are you all the criticise or demean anyone who listens to them??? And what kind of a pig headded freak are you to wish death on someone because they are in a band you hate? Narrow minded stupidity...that kills more than drugs people. As far as the touring is concerned, I've heard nothing but good things about it...and if your bashing it...either you went and you're a fan and don't want to verbally fucked on here, or your blowing hot fuckin air out your ass cuz you don't know what you're talking about. Assuming you could do better...and could prove it, then maybe you could talk...till then, shut the fuck up! Paul- dude it sucks that he's in the hospital, and I hope to hell he's ok. It's never good when you have to go in, but he'll be back before too long. \m/ and one final note...to all those bashers who wished he'd die...if he was in any other band you wouldn't feel that way. Hell just for being generally stupid...maybe you should take his place before the angel of death asscracks!

I wasn't debating the fact that the show wasn't sold out, because it obviously wasn't. What I was saying was that they have been doing exactly the same thing at all the shows. Although I read somewhere that an impressive percentage of tickets were sold for this tour.
Secondly, it wasn't the band that made those comments, it was either the local newspaper or another source.
Keep in mind that many fans of those three bands aren't exactly the sit-in-a-chair type. I know I wouldn't have went if I had to sit in the seats.

actually, i have seen slipknot 6 times since 1999...they USED to perform...you USED to hear odd dull notes and mistakes now and again. Ever since 2001, they have been flawless virtually everytime.
And if you really want to get technical with me, don't bother. I have perfect pitch, and you cannot tell me that those pinch harmonics in 'Disasterpiece', 'Duality', 'Pulse of the Maggots', and 'Spit It Out' are 100% on pitch everytime (with two guitarists no less) while they're jumpin/headbanging. If an A 440 is 5 cents sharp or flat, I'm able to tell you...I'm telling you I have not heard one organic pinch harmonic out of Slipknot, Killswitch Engage, or any of these other grindcore bands that insert drum triggers, click tracks, vocal enhancers, and DAT backing tracks into their 'live performances'. Concerning Slipknot, their show, or several parts of their show is RIGGED. Period. Case closed.

Paul was busted in LA for driving while on drugs (cocaine). However, Slipknot is better than most of the generic crap that they play on the radio. If you had to listen to the radio what would you prefer, Nickelback or Slipknot? Also, the ONLY band that is selling out arenas in the US constantly is U2. It's unfortunate but true!

I've been to numerous Slipknot shows over they years, and not once did I hear anything that would make me believe that they aren't playing. Other than the typical processing that gets done at most live metal gigs, I don't hear anything that would tip me off that it wasn't 'live'.
You are right though, they way they used to sound live is different then how they sound live now, but it's not because they aren't performing anymore. It's because Slipknot got very popular, and like most bands, when you get successful, you see the level of production increase because the demand is greater.
If they were using backing tracks, it would sound a lot smoother then it does now. Also, if you were to go to more than one show for the same tour, it would sound exactly like the other show, which wasn't the case when I saw them.
Remember, Slipknot's guitar parts aren't all that complex, and after playing some of the same songs for 5 years, I'm sure it becomes second nature to them.

heres a tip... when you state and opinion, make sure you base it of the fucking truth... dont be a bitch and think you know shit about slipknot... im not saying i know shit about them but I dont go and diss their work...
I like slipknot... Not because of their new shit... a bunch of posures only like them because of their new shit... their old shit is to be apreciated... slipknot is metal because just like every single metal band, you have the guitars playing loud dropped tunning, loud fast drumming, violent lyrics, and problems they've had from their pasts...
if you dont know what metal is, I suggest you look it up.. and just because YOU dont think they are, maybe you should shut the fuck up and learn about something before you blab some more bullshit...
fuck all of you that know nothing and hopefully, with myself, you will die...
