STATUS QUO Sign With SANCTUARY RECORDS
- Apr. 27, 2005
Sanctuary Records have announced the worldwide signing of STATUS QUO, who have sold over 100 million records in a 40-year-long career.
STATUS QUO will release a new album in September 2005 to coincide with the launch of their 40th anniversary celebrations. The band is currently in the studio recording with producer Mike Paxman.
Sanctuary Records worldwide CEO Joe Cokell commented, "It is great to have a band of QUO's stature on the label, and we look forward to working with them throughout the campaign."
Sanctuary Records Senior VP of A&R John Williams added, "No group has accumulated more U.K. hits or has a wider Top 20 chart span, and only THE BEATLES and ROLLING STONES can better their tally of Top 20 albums. We are thrilled that they have reunited with the home of their first hits, and we look forward to rocking all over the world with them."
Simon Porter, STATUS QUO manager said, "After a relationship with Universal spanning more than thirty years, we're delighted to be joining Sanctuary for QUO's 40th anniversary campaign. It is the start of an exciting new era for QUO and we're looking forward to building on the renewed success that the band has enjoyed in recent years."
The band's 40th Anniversary tour commences in Germany on September 23, with a major 34-date U.K. tour during November/December, sponsored by Kit Kat, which includes QUO's 40th appearance at Wembley on December 17. The band will also be making a special guest appearance in ITV's "Coronation Street" during the autumn.

STATUS QUO are one of the best bands ever. They opened Live Aid and had more Top 10 Albums than even the Stones. It all started with "Pictures of Matchstick Men" in the sixties and includes GREAT tunes such as "Caroline" and "Down Down"... I saw them in Chicago at the House of Blues a couple years ago. A packed house and a great time for all. These guys may be gettinbg a bit old, but they still know how to rock. Congratulations, QUO!

Great band, great tunes.
First gave them a listen back in '77.
Not metal, but good tuneage to party, chill, or pretty much do anything else to.

...what Coronation Street is, I am sure you will agree that the "Street" is the right place for these guys.
Well done to them for being around for ages and all that, but for god sake - there are many young musicians out there who dont get even a look-in because time and money is spent on old and irrelevant bands (albeit very succesfull - and hats off to them for that)
Its time to lump in the Quo with the repeat episodes of Dads Army and declare that it well and truly belongs to a period of the past.
It's 2005 for fuck sake...

Legends! Bugger off 'deathtomusic'! It's guaranteed sellers like Quo that mean record companies can afford to take risks on new acts. The industry actually needs bands like this.
There should always be a time and place for Status Quo. Why? Because they're unpretentious, unfashionable and the NME and any other 'trendy' bastards hate them! Long live Status Quo!
And lay off Dad's Army too! Quality comedy!

who do Sanctuary take risks on!!
They are known for signing up has-been artists and bands that should have given up on their 50th birthdays...
I agree that they are "unpretentious, unfashionable and the NME and any other 'trendy' bastards hate them" - but I would also say they have done NOTHING even REMOTELY interesting musically since the early 80's at best.
Anyway - I have one opinion, and you have another - lets leave it at that.
Peace.

I had no idea Status Quo had a new album coming out. They're a great band. Their last original album (2002's Heavy Traffic) was incredible, and their last cover album Riffs in 2003 was pretty damn cool, too. I'll get this new one right away.

Very good point about Sanctuary. They do very little for new bands but to be fair that's not what they're about. I just think there's a place for bands like this who clearly have a devoted and commited fan base. Granted, they've done bugger all musically but a lot of people still like them and pay to watch them so fair play to Quo. I think there's a place for every type of band in the industry, young and old, exciting and... not so exciting!
I don't see why bands should have to retire after a certain age. If they're still enjoying it then long may they continue. Maybe Quo will now come out with the best 12 bar blues album ever...................!
Don't forget that the best album this year has been released by a band on Sanctuary:
CORROSION OF CONFORMITY - IN THE ARMS OF GOD
Thank god for Sanctuary! Shame about Kelly Osbourne though. Oh dear. I've got no excuse for that!

Status Quo are commercial pop/rock nothing more... repetitive simplistic tunes with nothing to show for other than a caramel candy chorus... their stuff are all 3-chord affairs...
at the same time there is an infinite number of truly fantastic '70s rock bands that remained unnoticed... like Lucifer's Friend or Winterhawk and tons of others so far better than Status fucking Quo that it's ridiculous to even discuss it...

COMMENT | Quo and the Brit thing posted by : the holy ferret 4/28/2005 5:31:34 AM
Yes Quo are very much a British thing that hasn't translated well across the Atlantic. That's a two way thing though - you'd be surprised how many people in the UK have never heard of Kiss or Motley Crue or Poison (all of which were huge in the USA). I'd been listening to rock n' roll for years until I heard either of those bands. Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd, even a 12year old emo-kid will know who those bands are in the UK, but there's a hell of a lot of rock music that makes the top 20 in certain territories but never crosses the Atlantic.
Quo are 100% pop/rock. If they were an 80's band they'd be Poison, if they were a 90's band they'd be Linkin Park. I don't mean that as an insult, it's just technicality and musicianship was never what Quo aspired too. They just wrote easy, catchy three chord rock n' roll (usually with the same riff).
I have to admitt though, Quo is a guilty pleasure for me and I do like em (sad I know). They're one of those bands you listen to simply to laugh at how cheesy it is (same as you do with Venom or Slayer or a million and one "extreme" metal bands)
Greek God - Thanks for informing me about Winterhawk and Lucifer's Friend. Very impressive stuff, which I hadn't heard of. Unusual as I considered myself fairly knowledgeable of 70's rock. Just goes to show that as much as you think you know, you usually know very little. I tip my hat to you. You tend to find a lot of the bands that never made it big from the 70's were just as good muscians as the likes of Deep Purple and co (sometimes better), they just never had the breaks. As such, there's a wealth of good material out there still waiting to be discovered.

It really pi$$es me off when people say "Quo only use three chords" Have any of you seeen Quo live? They are no spring chickens, but they put everyting into the performance. They tour EVERY year, and have a large fan base. Good luck Quo in your 40th year, heres to the next 40!

Quo are not relics of the past, they still bring enjoyment to thousands of people with evey song and tour they do. At least deathtomusic has recognised their outstanding contribution to the worldwide music industry. How many people could tell you who the lead singer/guitarist of Lucifers friend? I agree that other up and coming bands should get a bite of the cherry, but if it was at the expense of leaving Quo on the sidelines.......well I for one would be really pi$$ed off. We get alot of people saying that they only have 3 chords, or, that all the songs sound the same, Coca-cola still tastes the same as it always has, but it keeps on selling and no-one has complained about it. With Quo, sanctuary have signed a brilliant, rocking band who's durability has out shone 99% of any other band over the last 40 years. Long live the Quo! Well done Sanctuary.

Quo have had a bad press since about 1970. They weren't fashionable then, they're not fashionable now and have never been in vogue in between.
This forum is an interesting place to find Quo. They are not and never have been a metal outfit. They pre-date metal by about 15 years!
But everyone has their heroes. Everyone on here does. Quo happen to be mine. If you're going to knock 'em (as invariably anyone who doesn't think does) then at least make it constructive because we've all been listening to the 3 chord/lamebrain comments for decades. Its boring and has no effect whatsoever other than to give the commenter an inflated perception of his own coolness.
Quo on Sanctuary could turn out to be a real blessing and the band's swansong. A couple of blistering albums following on from Heavy Traffic before they jack it in for good.
Quo's legacy will not become evident until they die. Like many before them. And, yes, they have shifted staggering amounts of albums/singles/videos/DVD's. The last DVD went platinum at the end of last year.
Give 'em a break, just once, eh? Or go see them live. Then you might have a basis for any comments you wish to make.
