KORN Frontman: New Album Will Be Our 'Dark Side Of The Moon'
- Apr. 27, 2005
|
|
KORN fan site KornWeb.cjb.net conducted a brief interview with KORN frontman Jonathan Davis Tuesday night (April 26). A couple of excerpts from the interview follow: KornWeb.cjb.net: How does being a parent of now two kids affect the way you do what you do? Are there any limits or barriers you set for yourself now that you obviously have a lot on your hands? Jonathan Davis: "Being a parent doesnt effect anything I do music-wise. Music is what I am. If I didn't have it I would die. So my babies are what brings me back from all the shit i sing about. They make me happy." KornWeb.cjb.net: Sorry, of course you do not have to answer this and i respect your wishes. How does it feel now that Brian [ Welch, a.k.a. Head] has left? What's the atmosphere in the band? Jonathan Davis: "It really sucks that a friend of 13 years decides to cut all ties with his band. I haven't talked to him since he left." KornWeb.cjb.net: You miss him? Jonathan Davis: "Every time I try to talk, he shoves Jesus down my throat. I miss Head, I don't miss this new guy. And the band feels much better without him. Sounds fucked up but he really wasn't there a lot... drugs, depression… and the band tried to help, but he would just yell at us to leave him alone. I still love and miss him." KornWeb.cjb.net: "Take a Look In the Mirror" was a pretty in-your-face and straight-up album to most fans. A lot of people felt that there wasn't enough experimentation on it. Some felt that the grandeur and new musical direction of "Untouchables" was ultimately shoved out the window. People clearly want something different. So my question is: What can you tell us about the inspiration, and direction of the seventh album? Jonathan Davis: "The direction of this album is purely experimental from working with pop producers. Everything is fresh and new. Taking things to a different place, sound and lyrics." KornWeb.cjb.net: Side question, how many songs will be on it, if you can tell us? Jonathan Davis: "15 [or] 16, maybe. (I) can't tell yet. We demoed 25. I feel this album is gonna be our 'Dark Side of the Moon'. Not to compare us with [ PINK] FLOYD, they kick our ass. . . But how that album was so experimental. They just lost Syd Barrett, he went crazy. There is a lot in common, it's a trip." Read the entire interview at this location.

that anything KoRn releases will be ANYWHERE near the masterpiece that "Dark Side of the Moon" was, or for that matter STILL is.
The closest they would ever come to accomplishing that would be to release a completely blank disk.

"Dark Side of the Moon"is one of those "once in a career" albums that few bands ever accomplish (and they did it again with The Wall). Comparatively to the rest of their catalogue it might be Korn's DSOTM but it sure as hell isn't going to be anywhere as brilliant as it.

I doubt Korn will ever die, like Metallica (who suck) it does not matter how bad the albums are, people will still buy them (not as much), but their main draw is concerts, they like Metallica make bad albums but they sell out venues, they have yet to have disappointing ticket sales. I never believe waht a band says when they try to compare their album to someone else's, here's an idea for a band, don't.

Yes, good good. I agree that "TALITM" was pretty lame, but I have faith in them to release something that's actually listenable like "Issues" or "Untouchables." But I swear to God, if it's another piece of crap like their last album, I'm going to be through with these guys forever. I can take only one bad album, then I'm done. Godsmack is also on my watch list for suckiness after that pile of an album "Faceless."

So that DOES mean that they are going to be using falsetto back-up singers, brass and woodwind instruments, guitar synths, keyboards, and do a shit load of acid while they record it? And that the bass player will write almost all the songs, and we'll forever hear it on classic rock radio stations in 30 years????

Syd Barrett left Pink Floyd after giving them their name and writing all of their first songs and all of their debut album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" apart from the song called "Take up Thy Stethoscope and Walk" which was written by Roger Waters, who became the leader and main songwriter when Syd left. And Syd didn't actually left he was kicked out during the "A Saucerful of Secrets" sessions, he only wrote a song for that second Pink Floyd album, "Jugband Blues" which talks about him being kicked out of the band and he sang and played guitar only on that one. Now "The Piper" came out in 1967, and "A Saucerful" came out in 1968!!! "The Dark Side of the Moon" came out in MARCH 1973!!! SYD WAS LONG GONE!!! Why do you have to pretend to be a FAN of a band you know little about, i'll never know. It's just stupid. Maybe you're confusing "The Dark" with "Wish You Were Here", which came out in September 1975, and which is pretty much entirely dedicated to Syd (The title track and the Shine On You Crazy Diamond suites are odes to Syd) and that's because Waters felt that the band had lost its purity (he was wrong, but that's how he felt) and because the band had met Syd, who, bloated and completely out of his head, showed up in the studio saying he was "ready to do his bit". I like your band and music and i'm sure this new album's good...but please cut the crap. And yes Pink Floyd kick your ass, they actually kick a lot of arses. Up to the Final Cut of course, when Waters left they died, no matter what Gilmour wants you to think.

Granted the dude isn't saying they're as good as Pink Floyd, he's only comparing their two albums on an experimental level, but even then it's ridiculously pretentious. Imagine the music scene when 'Dark Side Of The Moon Came Out'. Now think about the music scene now. I doubt any album CAN possibly have the WOW factor in terms of experimenting and originality that Pink Floyd's album had way back when. 'Dark Side Of The Moon' was more than just a good album, it was a cultural phenomenon. If you take 'Dark Side Of The Moon' out of musical history, you can state with pretty much 100% accuracy that nothing would sound like what it does today, so influencial was that album.
Korn can't compete with that. However, I'm not bashing them when I say that. Even a band as good as Iron Maiden can't compete with that. Being experimental is easy, but breaking every musical rule in the book and being commercial about it at the same time is a bit harder. Pink Floyd did so back in the day, I dunno if any band could now. That's not Korn's fault, it's just the way it is.

It was that said I need to listen to more Pink Floyd, I must at this point explain that I have suffered from overexposure to the entire Pink Floyd back catalogue recently, and I found the only part of it worth anything was The Wall. The rest, tho frequently tagged "experimental", was actually turgid shite. When the Beatles used the techniques that Pink Floyd use (alarm clocks in songs etc) it was done to great effect. Pink Floyd have none of the magic, and prog rock as a genre has no good reason to exist (those who wish to bore the world with music theory should either teach music or work as session musicians IMO).
KoRn's audience may have some pre-teen elements, but that doesn't mean anything. I've seen 13 year olds wondering the streets in Metallica hoodies, and I saw a kid of about 7 in a Slipknot hoody on his Dad's shoulders in a festival crowd. It doesn't mean SHIT!! Using that as criticism of a band is stupid.
I'll admit that I was a big Limp Bizkit/Linkin Park fan around 2000, but I was 14 years old at the time and have long since moved on from those bands (it actually hurt listening to lyrics like "Sometimes I need to remember just to breathe" - Linkin Park so I moved on). I don't discredit all skilled guitarist (I have nothing at all bad to say about DB (RIP), I have some respect for Vai and there are others. But I refuse to credit someone's music purely because of the level of technical skill. KoRn are skilled musicians - the nu-metal bands that people (rightly) complain about are the likes of Papa Roach (the bassist "writes" all the guitar parts using Pro Tools), Adema, Alien Ant Farm etc. KoRn are, and always have been, leagues beyond these bands.
FYI, these are the bands that I have in my CD stash at the moment (a cross section, anyway):
Down, Superjoint Ritual, Pantera, KoRn, Nine Inch Nails, Hendrix Experience, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Queens of the Stone Age, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns'n'Roses, Yngwie Malmsteen, Sepultura, Soulfly, Black Label Society, Rage Against the Machine
MAybe not so heavy on the "teen angst rock" after all, then...

Fuck off, Stool - that's what people do here. Don't like it? Tough shit.

"Hell, you ignorant scum are pissing me off."
Oh piss off you ignorant fuck. So you're pissed off, huh? Earth to moron - nobody gives a fuck.
Curly Sue -
"Oh, and for the record, KoRn can kick the living crap out of Pink Floyd's mindless over indulgences. "
With that statement you prove that A) you know nothing about music and B) you're an idiot.

"First of all, if you hate korn so much then why do you waste so much time bitching about them on online messageboards. Get a fucking life. "
First of all, if you dislike the comments people post here why do you spend so much time bitching about them on this online message board. Take your own advice and get a fucking life, clown-boy.
And today's winner of the most idiotic post on this thread -
Kreep -
"Never have I come across a website that attracts so many losers."
Which pretty much explains your presence here.
Blabbermouth - always good for a few laughs at the expense of some of the utter nitwits that post here.

You're just too stupid to ever learn what an idiot you make of yourself time and time again. Two facts you seem unable to grasp:
1. There is no continent called "America".
2. "UNISTATERSIANS" is not a word. Just because you spell it two different ways in your post doesn't change that fact but instead proves that it's a word you've simply made up.

Could you be any more stupid? Just because some guy called a continent America back in 1507 does NOT mean that's what it's called today. What a fucking idiot. Here - educate yourself dumbass. The continents - from Wikipedia.com
1. Eurasia mostly on the Eurasian Plate 2. Africa on the African Plate 3. North America mostly on the North American Plate 4. South America on the South American Plate 5. Antarctica on the Antarctic Plate 6. Australia on the Australian Plate
Assuming you can read you can see there is a NORTH AMERICA and a SOUTH AMERICA. I don't think I can dumb this down for you any further.
And I never said my country is a continent.
Thanks for proving what everyone here already knows - that you're a fucking idiot.

Man I have'nt beeen up in this bitch in a long time..I see programthe dead and Curly Sue and still sucking Korn's little clit sized cocks...pathetic...
So you call Korn haters losers, but who's the asshole posting bullshit.....huh?
Recently I found an article about the horseshit korn started called mallcore that you assholes should read....
Why is Korn not metal and glam metal is? Here is the answer...
One of the foundations of metal is well played distorted electric guitar.
Many mallcore bands do not have that key element of well-played guitar. The riffs are simplistic, chord progressions uninspired and in many cases a total lack of soloing! How a genre that tries to identify themselves as metal but reject the basis of metal is beyond me! Many melodic hard rock bands and glam bands have guitarists (and drummers) that were extremely talented and would showcase that talent in solos, both on record and live. (Eg. Frankie Banali of Quiet Riot or Steve Vai of David Lee Roth and Whitesnake.) These artists can play circles around 99% of the mallcore (ahem ,cough) "musicians" today. METAL has often (but not always) been about progression, virtuosity, and experimentation and so many of the mallcore bands do not meet those concepts. Dull songwriting, simple beats and just a general lack of songwriting skill and technical ability are major strike against mallcore, as being defined as metal.
Conversely, melodic hard rock and glam had these attributes often in large quantities. Glam and melodic hard rock, when well executed, is written and played with passion and strength. Mallcore bands have not fully embraced the fact that true heaviness is derived from the riff and song structure, not from yelling, swearing, jumping up and down, silly masks, drop tuning and multi-layered drumming. I have heard some power ballads that have more balls than the montone, songs of many mallcore bands. Mallcore does not even hold a candle to most metal genres (Thrash, Black and Death) when it comes to aggression and power! If glam bands can blow away most mallcore bands and glam are the lightweights of the METAL genre, it is not a glowing endorsement of mallcore as a heavy music form.
True defiance for artistic gratification or manufactured rebellion for commerce?
Another key element of metal is defiance and rebellion (call it what you will) Back in the fairly conservative days of the late 70's and early 80's METAL defined rebellion in terms of dress, attitude, lyrics, image and so on. There was a naïve, sincerity about young people who railed against social convention by wearing ripped jeans, long unkempt hair and so on. Today's rebellious youth of the mallcore circles lack that sincerely defiant attitude. When a young person/artist of mallcore persuasion talks of anger, hate, frustration (all common themes in music throughout the ages) it seems very insincere and contrived when they have a very specific set common images in terms of what brand name to wear and what colour to spike your hair. To me it is as simple as, the 80's glam fan/artists said, "The establishment prefers short hair so I'll grow mine long." compared to the modern mallcore fan who says ""The establishment prefers short hair so I'll dye it a certain colour, spike it with gel, by a brand name toque and grow a little beard in a certain way." Manufactured rebellion. They (mallcore) think "Rebels look like this, so this is how I'm going to look, so people think I'm a rebel." That is the crux. The mallcore group use pre-packaged defiance to identify themselves as a certain group, (to make friends) where as METAL uses rebellion for pure, undiluted reasons, to NOT belong to a certain group. (to make enemies or assert individuality).
Overall there seems to be a lack of true passion and integrity in the mallcore bands. The adherence to formula and commercialism derives them of the sincerity of purpose, which is a key element in metal. For some reasons many mallcore artists don't see the inherent hypocrisy and conflict of interest in speaking about rebellion, defiance and hate while fully embracing commercialism. A few of the more astute mallcore bands try to act defiant and rebellious adopting outrageous images but they are derivative of METAL bands that did it 10, 20 even 30 years ago. In the realm of mallcore, it is cool to say you like metal and cite it as an influence but not to play it. Lip service to gain credibility fails when the deeds do not follow the words.
To summarize and answer the question why glam has a place in the hallowed halls of metal (and Metal-Rules) and mallcore never will? Mallcore, unlike glam, lack the basic tenants of metal, namely talent, virtuosity, power, sincerity, passion, integrity. The question in retrospect is very simple to answer. Mallcore is not metal. Glam is.
Glam fully embraces all the metal attributes and conventions and mallcore does not.....

Stop comparing Korn with Pink Floyd. If you would have read the article carefully, you wouldnt notice what Jonathan says " I feel this album is gonna be our 'Dark Side of the Moon'. Not to compare us with [PINK] FLOYD, they kick our ass. . ." NOT TO COMPARE OURSELVES WITH PINK FLOYD.Are you all illiterate or something? The point was to create a metaphor saying that, just as Pink Floyd experimented with "Dark Side of the Moon", Korn is experimenting with this new album. Are you intellectually challenged? For those of you who are, that was a rheroical question meaning it doesnt require an answer.Apparently you are retaded if you think Korn is trying to compare themself to Pink Floyd, which i think they are capable of doing seeing as Pink Floyd sucks balls. So before you want to diss KoRn the next time, make sure you read carefully, assholes.
