Ex-MEGADETH Guitarist MARTY FRIEDMAN Is A Hit On Japanese TV - Apr. 28, 2005
Former MEGADETH guitarist Marty Friedman's official web site has been updated with the following message:

"The [Japanese] TV show 'Hebimetasan', which features Marty each week as a regular, is a smash hit! The premise of the high-energy show is to introduce, explain and have fun with (as well as make fun of) heavy metal/hard rock music to the mainstream, for people who would otherwise have no contact with the genre, such as the show's host, idol/model Yoko Kumada (think discussing the merits of the likes of VELVET REVOLVER, SOILWORK and ANDREW W.K. to Cindy Crawford or Anna Kournikova). Each week in 'Marty's Metal Spirit in Japan' Marty exposes the unlikely links between Japanese folk music and heavy metal hits. The overwhelming response to the show has put Marty and Japan's top television production company into talks of an exclusive contract. More news here as it develops.

"Marty is also the featured guest on 'Tokyo Style Shakaijin No Susume' ("Focus on society people Tokyo style") a highly rated show on TV Asahi. A different segment featuring Marty will be aired each week for 4 weeks in May. Each week will feature a different interview with Marty. Among other things, he will discuss his latest song, 'Street Demon' which is the theme song for Japan's top soccer TV program FC 'Tokyo Hotline' (shown every Thursday and Saturday).

"In recording news, Marty took a break from his solo album recording schedule to play guitar for AVEX artist Arashiro Beni's next single. The song will be released on June 1st and will be performed during the halftime show when the NFL comes to Japan for their exhibition game. The song was produced by multi-platinum producer CMJK (AYUMI HAMASAKI, HITOMI, PENICILLIN)."

Dude, just because Marty doesn't care to play metal anymore doesn't mean he's any less of an awesome guitarist. Have you even heard "Music For Speeding" on Favored Nations? That album is Baaaadaaaaassss. "Metal" elitists suck. What the hell constitutes what 'metal' is anyway? Who really gives a fuck as well?

What a great oppertunity for Marty! He's on a top rated show about metal and even gets to play gutiar on it, makes me wish I could watch those just for his moments of genius.

I never get it when peoplespeak ill of him. Sure he left Megadeth and that was a tragedy but he had to follow his muse and find what gets him excited. He's always been a class act and a class player and if you can't wrap it around your head that someone can't be stuck doing basically the same thing for his whole life then that's sad.

Marty didn't write much except for solos... Certainly not anything fast, considering the albums he wrote ANYTHING on were all after Rust In Peace...

It's mind-boggling how people can slam post-thrash Megadeth and say that Marty is a brilliant writer at the same time. (not accusing anyone here of doing that, but it happens.)

That said, good for Marty! I'm glad he's well liked in Japan, and that he's doing what he wants to. Doing what you want to and succeeding with it is really more metal than anything else...

Marty left us? Who the fuck is us? This whole 'metal community' thing is bullshit. Music is an individual's endeavor. There is no community. Until I pay taxes to it or have a metal union card I consider this community theme ridiculous. Marty left us. Whatever. Pop in Rust in Peace and you'll have 'your' old Marty all over again. Stop crying. If you don't like it then write the shit yourself.

was Marty's band before Megadeth. Jason Becker was the other guitarist on the album. He used to write cool shit before he was with Megadeth.

He's a guitar player who's doing what he wants to do. The metal scene is doing fine, it doesn't need Marty, especially if he doesn't really want to do it. He hasn't betrayed anybody.

YOU owe HIM for being creating music that you enjoy. So why don't you quit bitching about someone who inspired you so much and go kill yourself you ungrateful little bastard.

Hey, whatever makes the guy happy ya know? At least he is out there enjoying life and having a good fuckin time with it. I love Megadeth and all, but I don't think it's a secret Dave might be difficult to work with at times. With this, Marty can do whatever he likes and it seems to be working very well for him. Japan also has some killer metal audiences over there to so I know he is appreciated in those parts. Good for you Marty!

"Hey, I heard Kerry King doesn't want to play metal anymore, so he's joining Britney Spear's touring band. Let's all applaud him for doing what he wants. Go Kerry!"

That's so stupid. Even if it were true I could care less. I'm not going to hate any musician for doing what they want. Cryassing about it and pretending that a musician is 'yours' is selfish. You've still got the greats that you love. They don't disappear.

Marty got fired from Megadeth by Mustaine because he wouldn't let Marty do shit in the band.
He's been in the metal scene for some time and did what he could. Now you expect him to give up an awesome life living among hot chicks, and come back to play a megadeth re-union tour with Dave "the asshole" mustaine?!

I don't blame him for what he's doing now. In fact he is much better than all these posers who claim to be "metal" and bash others. At least he had the balls to say "fuck this shit. I'm tired. I wanna do something else."

blessed be.

I saw one of the early dates of Megadeths last tour (with Marty) in Sacramento. About 17,000 people. I also saw Marty's very last show with Megadeth in Reno, NV. About 350 people. Marty was throwing picks to me the whole show. It was quite funny.
While I like Megadeth's early stuff their later stuff was horrible. It was like Dave caught the "pop" bug and wanted to sell albums by sounding less aggressive, and to me, less of a love for "pushing the envelope" musically. I do believe that Marty is doing what he wants to do and is not "selling out".
Long live Cacophony ! ! ! What an album. The Jason Becker solo album as well as Marty's are awesome as well. Recommended: Dragons Kiss.

Even Devin Townsend makes fun of metal. Metal is a parody. Grown men screaming and yelling, getting their panties all up in a bunch. It really is ridiculous. I dig the brutality and all but people really shouldn't take it too seriously.

Eh, so Marty Friedman plays J-pop now. Care. Now granted I could go the rest of my life never having to sit through damn near anything related to J-pop again (and I have listened to J-pop before but purely by accident at a few parties; saccharine doesn't even begin to describe the quality of the music here) but even listening to Marty deliver some sincere musicianship in one J-pop song would actually be better than having to hear him play an extremely forced solo on "The System Has Failed". He clearly wasn't happy with the direction of Megadeth's music for his own tastes and this in turn influenced his decision to leave the band regardless whether it was mutual or if Dave Mustaine fired him. And what's to say that this change in musical direction wasn't in the cards for some time now anyway? There's more pressing matters in metal these days, people.

molotov: Eh, "MXC"'s been on Spike TV for at least 2 years now and I got attracted to the show once at a neighbor's housewarming party. It still has its moments but half the time I'm not at home anymore to watch it. If you want to see a recent show sticking with the subject of Japanese culture at hand with some humorous results I suggest "Kung Faux" on Showcase TV. It's basically 30 minutes of cheesy kung-fu film excepts from the 60's and 70's set to rap and hip-hop dialogue. Hilarious as hell although it ain't shit compared to "Trailer Park Boys".

The scene's cool, lotsa insane and killer bands, love the food and mangas, the samurai culture and people are totally crazy.
From Abigail to Sigh, from S.O.B. to the Boredoms, from Masonna to Merzbow i love them all.
Jap pop is cool, lotsa guitar solos in the songs, no wonder Marty feels right at home playing it.
Hail Hidetoshi Nakata!

Marty was and still is an amazing guitarist. It is disapointing that he decidied he doesn't want to play metal anymore, but hey thats how it goes. But for those who think he should abandon what he's doing to come back to metal, all I can say is I don't want anyone playing metal if their heart is not truly in it.There is nothing worse then pretending to be something you don't really want to be.If he doesn't want to do it then i say,"Get out and good luck."And i agree with the guy who said their is no real metal community.Everyone talks about community when it is conveniant to bash someone who has defected, but any other time,a metal fan wouldn't piss on another metal fan to put him out if he was on fire. There is only "you let down the metal community"when it's convienant to the bitcher.
