TYPE O NEGATIVE's PETER STEELE Is Not Dead

Despite a message on the band's official web site that seems to suggest otherwise, TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele HAS NOT DIED. The band, who are famous for their dark sense of humor, have spent much of the last few months preparing material for their SPV Records debut, which is expected to be recorded later in the year. TYPE O NEGATIVE cancelled their U.S. tour last fall in order to allow Steele to undergo further tests after "undisclosed anomalies" were discovered during a medical exam. A February 11, 2005 update on Peter's condition from TYPE O NEGATIVE drummer Johnny Kelly stated, "There really isn't much to report other than he's doing fine and his health is improving daily." TYPE O NEGATIVE, whose first album, "Slow, Deep and Hard", was issued in 1991, fulfilled their contractual obligations to longtime label Roadrunner with the release of 2003's "Life Is Killing Me". That album debuted on The Billboard 200 chart at No. 39 in June 2003 after registering a first-week sales tally of 27,023 copies. TYPE O NEGATIVE's best-selling album to date is 1994's "Bloody Kisses", which has shifted nearly a million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

I woke up today when my mother was calling my cell phone. My stepsister got rushed into hospital after a suicide attempt. She will most probably survive, luckily. She is/was a huge Type O Negative fan. I do not know yet if she heard/saw the news and tried to end her life because of that STUPID JOKE of the band or if it was just a coincidence that she tried to suicide at the same day this "joke" was announced.... I doubt the latter one, though. We will learn the truth when she recovers in a few days; she's now held artifically in coma, but doctors say they'll pull her back within days or a week.
Type O Negative, THINK WITH YOUR BRAINS. If my stepsister would've succeeded on her attempt, would you be more happier with your "joke"??? Think about it, morons! Yes, I know it isn't your fault she is a huge fan(atic) but still, playing JOKES with someone's DEATH is just simply too much!!! You NEVER thought someone would believe what the OFFICIAL web page seemed to inform??? If it looks like a gravestone and there's the name and the "birth - dieed" years announced, why not believe it? This is the MOST STUPID AND LETHAL JOKE EVER!!
Maybe the next joke of the band will be using cyanide to the audience, right? It can't be more unhealthy.

A fucking band's nothing more than a band, a bandmember is just another bandmember, and music is just music, that's all. A healthy person doesn't make the decision whether to kill oneself or not based on what happens to some band. Mentally unstable people might do so, but the society and world cannot be shaped so that some mentally ill person won't get funny ideas. Humor - even the dark one - belongs to the world, and if some psychoward patient can't handle it, tough shit. Not to even mention that anyone who knows his shit will tell you that Type O Negative has always loved dark pranks and jokes.
Maybe you ought to spend more time with your sister, and get her some psychiatric help? It's utter bullshit to blame a band and its jokes for the actions of someone who's clearly unstable. Unstable people need medical help, not shittalking on a website. Also getting a life would be appropiate. When you have a life of your own that doesn't revolve around some band or their music, it's just much healthier in every way. People who live their lives through some band and their music are not well.

really, I recall musicians of bands that I really dig dying while growing up and yet I never even considered taking my life because of it. I don't know, sounds a little dramatic to me to do something that ridiculous. Just nonsense.
Hey, if a musician is killed, takes their own life, just plain old dies, then their time is over. It doesn't mean that yours has to be too. Same goes with a family member or friend. We all have close relationships that we don't think we can ever be without, yet as time comes and goes these things pass. Much like the pain endured from losing someone so close. This would be NO different.
On a different note, I don't like Type O, and honestly have never liked anything they have done. However Pete Steele in Carnivore, now THAT was something I liked. Why not capitalize on the trend and reform that fucker and get out there and perform some classic shit! Maybe then you won't have to post "fake I'm dead" messages on your "official" site.

Well, i dont know aything about this situation with him possible being dead - but, if he has any ailments, or if he is sick, i must tell you - about 5 years ago, i was sick and i was suposed to interview Peter Steele but couldnt cuz i was sick, Roadrunner Records told Peter about it, and he called me at my home to wish me well and to get better - thats a real person, and that really moved, me, i still to this day tell people how much of a great perosn he is - PETER, if you are sick, get well - scary gary in Oakland Ca.

One of the best bands, and one of the most original I´ve heard, their tone is awesome, no one made it before, it´s so weird and heavy, I really enjoy it.
Anyway, about the suicide attempt of that guy´s sister above, I don´t know if it´s related to Stelle, but anyway, people who try to commite suicide are stupid and coward, that´s my thought, and if the reason is a band member being that, it´s even worse, I wish the best to her, but like some guys said "GET A LIFE!"

If you read the article, it never says that the BAND posted the message about Peter. Johnny Kelly is currently in Europe with Danzig. And if you go to the band's website, the message board has been taken down.
So the band may have nothing to do with this rumor/joke/whatever at all.

yesterday was friday the 13th. the band is known for fondness for the number 13.
a) they never said peter was dead, just "free"
b) that would never go up if it wasn't band approved and they're known for their dark humor
c) the last album had photos of the band lying on gurneys with toe tags so why is this so 'shocking'?

If your sister would kill herself if Pete Steele died, she's a true fucktard, and you know it. People like you are the reason so much of the things that have meaning (not to imply a fake death has copious meaning) are reduced to PC inoffensive pathetic garbage.
This is not new Type O behavior, and considering that there is a SUCCESSFUL teen suicide every 90 minutes and the ratio of attempts to success is about 50:1, I would say, yes, it's VERY possible it was a coincidence. A lot of people's sisters try to kill themselves every day, no matter what rock star dies.
Type O was making a joke in homage to when the Beatles pulled the "Paul is Dead" hoax in 1969 (which to me is why it's funny). Even if your sister didn't get that (if she follows the Type O AT ALL she should know how much they tribute the Beatles) she should have noticed that the gravestone on the website looks a little bit.... off...... as in fake as Al Gore's hair.....

I like Peter's dark humour and i really like Type O Negative they're a good band and they spread real darkness through their music. Listening to them is for me an experience comparable to watching old Dracula movies with Bela Lugosi: Fascinating.
Peter's Steele real name is Petrov Stalin, he is of russian descent and yes he is related to the (in)famous russian Dictator.

My first tattoo was the negative circle on my right shoulder, my first concert was Type O Negative whom I've gone on to see 6 times, and Peter himself put me on his guestlist for their last Halloween night show at the Trocadero in 2001, I believe it was. He truly is the coolest and genuinely nicest guy I ever met in music and this band is greatly underappreciated. I just hope to see them again soon or at least hope that their next album won't take 4 friggin years to complete.

HELLO PEOPLE!!!!!!! You do not know these people directly... why would you kill yourself over someone passing of natural causes anyway?

peter is actually very anti-drug use and only takes prescrition medicine and weight training enhancements (legal ones of course). If you have ever read or watched Type O interviews, you might catch a thing or two...

She's obviously a narcissistic little jerk who wanted to get attention. If she had really wanted to kill herself, she would have succeeded. She probably just scratched up her wrists a little bit in the wrong direction like most pathetic girls do when they want someone to feel sorry for them. Boo hoo. And maybe you're too young to remember, but back in the 80s, a little band called Judas Priest was accused of goading kids into committing suicide. The accusations were started by Tipper Gore and some other stupid hags who thought that Metal music was corrupting the youth. Luckily, they didn't succeed in bringing the music down, but I'm sure you can take up their cause again if you feel so strongly about it. Everyone will continue to laugh in your face.

Ok now i can breath a huge sigh of relief......im not THE WORLDS biggest fan of these guys by any means, but i love them to death ;) i dont keep tabs on what they are doing all the time....so i just happened to go on their site and discovered the joke and got all alarmed and then figured out 2 mins later it was all a joke!! Although, it is allarming that they would make the attempt to take their life as a result of a prank. Bands do things like that all the time! I do advise her to get some help. True, she didnt have any right to blame the band itself for the own choices her sister made, neither does she have the right to call them "morons" but she does have the right to voice how she is feeling. People deal with things in different ways!

I was worried as hell when the site just had that rainbows and bears thing with "love you to death". I was looking all over for any news about the band breaking up/quitting. When I saw the gravestone, I freaked for a millisecond. Then I thought about it, it's classic type o. I fuckin love these guys. Saw them 7 times, hope to see them many more. Love EVERY cd, listening to LIKM right now. CANNOT wait for the new one (although they say it'll be out in late 2005, it'll most likely be out in like 2008). FREE AT LAST!!! Steele and the guys in Type O have just gotten free of their shitty Roadrunner contract......

Yesterday I was in downtown doing some regular stuff...when a sms from my girlfriend alerted me that on TON's official website stands that Peter Steele has died! Shit, man! First thought in my mind was: Can't be possible! that man cannot die, simply cannot!!! I am a great fan of TON especially of their frontman Peter Steele, more than 10 years... Best days of my 20-ties were signed by their music, and the inspiration for most things in my life came from their creativity...Good part of my personality was build upon some Pete's statements I've read in interviews... I am a successfull man who has a beautiful wife (but not married) and great 6 year old son named Peter!! I even work in one of the great tv stations in country "super tv" as a news presenter and this short form of tv news is named "Attitude" and from 200.000 people in this city they (a tv station) found the right guy (me!) to be the one who's going to represent their tv station. Why? Because of my attitude, manners, premiss...that was mostly build upon model of Peter Steele's personality and his attitude... Get it?!
I wanna say that this man means a lot to me and I simply couldn't believe that he's dead! And thanks God because it was just a joke, otherwise - part of me would certainly die.

Well, I must be living in a hole as I didn't know what the hell's been going on until I checked the website today, which so callously displayed Peter's head stone. Lovely guys, really brillant! I think my heart dropped into my stomach for a moment until I did some digging and found it's a hoax. Really original guys. Anyway, I love TON too and it would really be a shame had we lost a great philosopher and poet. Although poetically dark, the bands lyrics are stirring and somewhat sensual. Cheers Peter, to your health! Take solace in hitting the iron, it does wonders for the soul.

First of all, I am a huge music fan and a huge Type O fan; and yes, we feel a bit of a bond with our favorite groups because we invite them into our homes and our cars and our jobs from time-to-time, but that is where the MATURE ones of us let the relationship end. My mother dropped dead 22 months ago and we have still never gotten a clear answer why. But here I am, still standing, still working 56 hours a week, doing my thing. Frankly, I think Pete would be appalled that someone would try to commit suicide over his passing and would have as much disdain for said person as many of the people who have posted here.

Could you tell me where that info came from? I'm not arguing with you; I just heard something a little different, that's Pete's birth name was Peter Thomas Rataczic Jr. Hell, even Stalin's real name wasn't Stalin, it was Dzugashvili, as Kull pointed out earlier. And while Pete does acknowledge Russian heritage, he considers himself to be "an average Pollock" (his words, not mine, even though that's what I call my boyfriend) and was raised Catholic. Stalin lived in a Russian Orthodox seminary for many years. Stalin was an only child, had black hair and brown eyes, and was only 5'4" tall. Peter Steele's father was 6'6" tall and had blond hair and blue eyes. And both of Stalin's sons were dead by the time Pete's second-oldest sister was born. Again, I'm not arguing with you dude, but I'd like to know where that info came from? 'Cause them there is some big discrepencies.

I know, I was young, stupid and very unahppy once in my life - and I was brought back to life. Three times. The third time was serious and I had to take a therapy. The only thing I really appreciated in my life at that time was TON, so the doctor used it - and in that strange way I am alive - thanks to Peter&co ;) I am allmost 23, a good student of political sciences, working, I have my own flat, two cats and I'm a fan of Type'O'Negative for allmost greater part of my life (started to listen 1993). Don't tell me they do bad things to people's lives .. yes, I allmost got a heart attack too, when I heard the news, but then I rememberd Peter's stupid smirk, when he was speaking of his death at "After Dark" and I thought "Yeah, right cutie - nice try ;)"
When he'll be dead, you'll know by the real mourn at their site, not just usual pranks ...

It was funny of Type O to pull something like this, it just reminds me of why i love them so much. Anyways stonegaard, I don't think that you should blame TON for what your sister almost did. I mean they didn't intend for any harm to come to her, so you shouldn't point the finger at them and blame them. I mean i love type o negative, but just because peter dies, doesn't mean that i'm going to take my own life as well, i think that peter wouldn't want any of his fans to do that. So yeah, i wish that your sister gets better.
