Legendary New York City Rock Club Eyeing Last-Ditch Summer Benefit Tour - May 17, 2005
Billboard.com is reporting that CBGB is hoping to host a 30-date festival of big-name acts this summer in a last-ditch effort to save the legendary punk rock club, founder and owner Hilly Kristal told the handful of journalists and supporters who turned out yesterday (May 16) for the start of a fund-raising push.

Kristal indicated that he would invite Patti Smith, David Byrne and many of the other one-time fringe acts who played the New York landmark on their way to mainstream stardom. "If the BEASTIE BOYS are around, I think they'd play," said Kristal. "GREEN DAY came in one night and just played. Maybe they'd come back.

"There might be some people you wouldn't think of playing CBGBs," he added, noting that country star Alan Jackson was a fan of the venue.

The club itself is a hole. The sound system is pretty decent though. Its more history than anything else. You won't be impressed by the ambiance, but it would be nice to keep the club around at least to have an another venue for up and coming bands.

Best part is the toilet in the middle of the men's room. No walls around it. I saw a guy taking a shit there once, his head down in his lap while two biker-types stood there laughing at him.

A local band from here paid $500 to play there one evening. They recorded their performance for a live album. The problem was....no one was at the show...so they stole the crowd from Nirvana's Live album and put it on theirs. Once the local reviewers got a hold of it and were able to tell the crowd was added later (it was obvious with fade ins and outs)...they had a field day. haha...

How many aging punk rockers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

All of them. One to screw in the bulb and the rest to sit around talking about how cool the old one was.

I remember when The Starwood on Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood closed. It was a bummer but those days I had there can never be re-lived no matter how long it might have stayed open. So I got over it. Take a picture of the club and move on.
