SOUNDSCAN Report: TEAM SLEEP Makes Respectable Debut, GEEZER BUTLER Flops
- May 18, 2005
|
|
|
TEAM SLEEP's self-titled debut has sold 18,159 copies in the United States during its first week of release to land at position No. 52 on next week's The Billboard 200 chart. The group, which features DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno, along with Moreno's childhood friend Todd Wilkenson on guitar, DJ Crook, bassist Rick Verrett and drummer Zach Hill, has been working on the material since 2001.
Meanwhile, BLACK SABBATH bassist Geezer Butler's latest solo album, "Ohmwork", registered a first-week tally of 895 — a disappointing number considering Butler's status as one of heavy metal's founding fathers.
Geezer's first album in eight years, "Ohmwork" is the bassist's third solo band release. His first project under the GZR banner was 1995's "Plastic Planet", which has sold 27,002 copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan. 1997's "Black Science", which was credited to GEEZER, has shifted 16,769 units to date. Guitarist Pedro Howse has worked on all three albums, while vocalist Clark Brown performed on "Black Science". The group's latest addition is drummer Chad Smith (not the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS man).

Plastic Planet is a great album though. Burton Bell's vocals are awesome. Can't wait to see him with Fear Factory this summer.

I just picked it up at lunch, but haven't had a chance to listen to. I agree that Burton kicked ass on the 1st one, but Clark Brown still did a great job on Black Science. Maybe the record company is to blame for not promoting it. He should have toured behind it more too.

...but the songs I've heard from that album were extremely weak. The bad reviews were correct.

"Ohmwork" is pretty sub-par compared to "Black Science," which I listened to non-stop in 1997. I also don't think that the new album was promoted nearly as much as Team Sleep, it's unfair to compare the two. It seems like Geezer has been targeting his project at the metal underground, whereas Team Sleep is more mainstream oriented.

That is an embarassing amount of albums sold. Not as bad as GZR though. But I guess it is deserved (to be so low) since the Team Sleep album is a fuckin' boring piece of crap (and I am a Deftones fan).

A #52 debut for Team Sleep isn't too far off of what I would've guessed. Definitely not heavily hyped. I've only heard one track and think it was kinda boring, but I still want to check it out.

Nielson doesn't count for about 50% of CDs sold. No independent stores or internet sales get tallied.

You gonna let some review make up your mind for you? Fuck that - make up YOUR OWN MIND.
The Blabbermouth review was rather harsh, and I believe really inaccurate. I rather love the new Geezer album. Yes, I do his website, but when I first got a copy of it, I didn't like it. I even told him that. But time changed it. The more I listened to it, the more it grew on me.
If you actually open your mind, I think you'll probably like it.

Is anyone shocked that Geezer Butler's "SOLO" isn't selling???
Considering "Plastic Planet" came out in 1995 and it's only sold 27,002 copies in 10 YEARS. How many copies did they think would b e sold in the first week???
I saw this band open for Bruce Dickinson in 1997. The band sounded good live. Musically they fit together pretty good. But, They didn't look like a band. None of these guys look like They should be in a band together. Visually They don't fit. You have Geezer Butler looking like the "Old-School Heavy Metal Guy", Clark Brown looked like a skater that should've been in a band that was on the Vans Warped Tour, The other guys just didn't look like they belong.

Selling over 18,000 copies of an album in one week should not be considered an "embarassing amount" at all. If it were some mega-star pop act then perhaps yes, but for a band that's just a side project of some well-known artists and doesn't have alot of press and hype behind them, that's a good number. Most musicians in this country wish they could ever sell enough cds to be in the top 100 chart.
Never let a review completely dissuade you from buying an album. With today's means of being able to find samples of most new albums online and such, at the very least seek them out and give them a listen. 99.9% of "critics" are just some joe-shmoe whose opinion is no more valuable than the drunken bum on the street corner. I haven't heard any of this new Geezer cd yet and I have read the reviews, but I will eventually give it a listen at some point, and draw my own conclusions, thank you.
And yes, as stated above and as has been stated a zillion times before, Soundscan is an extremely flawed method of recording record sales, especially when you consider all the small cd shops and online dealers for metal cds, etc. Soundscan is good for analyzing the sales of the latest Madonna record, not the latest metal cds. Blabbermouth enjoys showing these soundscan numbers because it gets people talking shit, and usually not understanding how it works either.

It's one thing if a review is bad, but I've read about ten bad reviews of the album and didn't read a good review until I saw Joe's comment here. Maybe I'll still give it a chance, but I'm not in a hurry to run out and buy it.

Liked Plastic Planet, LOVED Black Science...
Now Ohmwork... terrible play on words that is a weak pretense at a theme for the record. Downloaded bits and pieces, got afraid... Downloaded the whole thing, and for the first time in ages haven't saved it anywhere.
Sorry to say but we are obviously faced with something that was done rushed in 2 weeks. I know Geezer mentionned a thousand times that he wanted something rawer... No thanks, I'll pass on this one.
