MARILYN MANSON Talks About Inspiration Behind 'The Beautiful People' - May 30, 2005
MARILYN MANSON was featured in last week's Kerrang! magazine as part of a feature called "How I Wrote...", talking about the inspiration behind the song "The Beautiful People".

The Background:

Marilyn Manson: "I write phrases constantly and I have about 15 different notebooks going at the same time. I'll write lots of different things in each book. I have to lay them all out in the same place and pull things from each of them to write a song. I was on tour and I remember recording it on my four-track with Twiggy [Ramirez, bass] and my drummer Ginger in a hotel room. It was somewhere in the South, which is ironic. I remember playing the drum beat on the floor and then having my drummer duplicate that on the drum machine. It happened in one day pretty much. It happened maybe two-and-a-half years before 'Antichrist Superstar' was released, and if I played you that four-track recording, it would sound identical."

The Inspiration:

Marilyn Manson: "The term 'The Beautiful People' was inspired by a book that came out in the mid-'60s. It was about the Kennedys, politics and fashion at the time. The whole culture of beauty as being created at the time. We live in a world where the culture of beauty is taken for granted, but it didn't exist in the same way in the '60s. Then Charles Manson and his 'family' took that culture, hated it and reacted against it. In many ways his reaction is the same as mine, but I'm playing with it from both sides. I make things glamorous as a revolt to glamour."

The Legacy:

Marilyn Manson: "I wasn't thinking about it in terms like, 'Is this a classic?'. But I knew we'd arrived at our defining sound when we wrote it. Even now, when I go back and listen to it, it sounds big. I hear things in it that I didn't hear before. I'm still very happy and proud of it. I don't get sick of playing it live and I don't think I will get tired of it."

LatinoMetalhead obviously you didn't read Manson interview and or just don't get it.
Yes he is obsessed with his image but as he says in the interview He makes things glamorous as a revolt to glamour itself. Let me explain this to you like a baby. Manson takes on his appearance of the different eye color god awful makeup but dresses in away that is glamorous to him. Like his name part ugly disgrace (Charles Manson) and the other part comes from glamour (Marilyn Monroe). He twist 2 things together good and bad.
As far as Dita goes she's a modern day copy/imitation of Betty Page. She's not your typical runway model, her image fits Manson's image even if she's not original.
Overall the guy does spend lots of time with his image that's part of the point the guy is making you moron.

I think the guy looks creepy but dig the music (although Twiggy and John5 were a better live band)

"Basically, what happened was Twiggy Ramirez, the talented bassist/guitarist I managed to draw into my no talent band, came up with this really good, very simple riff which he paired with a bassline. I came and sang a load of junk lyrics over the top involving juxtaposition of imagery and religious insults and sweary naughty bad words and the tune still shone through the crap I smothered it with, so I was very happy. Then I roped an even MORE talented musician in called John 5, and I made him play really crappy very basic riffs until he and Twiggy got bored, quit and went and did better things. Now I'm on my own..."

COMMENT | I don't care, I still loved "Mech Animals" and basically all the songs.

I used to be one of the haters until he became less "in the zone", and I gave it a try and it was great. Rock is dead, long live rock.

.... I think Manson is a genius, But I think Blabbermouth is really starting to reach for stories when a song from 7 or 8 yrs ago makes news!

Manson is a phony. He standswith what he is against. Kin've dumb. What it is the point of his image? If he wasn't a fraud he wouldn't care about what he looked like. People like him need to remember it is about the music. I've only heard a few Marilyn Manson songs , but they've all sucked.

Okay, so Manson is pretty dumb..... like hell he is! I think you should take a look at your english skills before you go around calling others stupid. So do me a favour and think about what you are going to say before YOU say something stupid.
