ENTOMBED, NAPALM DEATH, CARCASS 'Mash-Ups' Posted Online - June 3, 2005
Several homemade mash-ups — welding the music from extreme metal acts to the lyrics/melodies of pop/rap songs — have been posted online at this location. Included on the site are the following "collaborations":

ENTOMBED vs. OUTKAST
NAPALM DEATH vs. SHAKIRA
CARCASS vs. MISY ELLIOTT
PITCHSHIFTER vs. B-52s
TERRORIZER vs. 50 CENT

According to AOL Music, a mash-up is the result of two or more songs, typically of different genres, mixed together to create a completely new song. Recent advances in technology and sequencing software have taken the homemade artform from an underground phenomenon to a worldwide craze that has been embraced by mainstream audiences, as well as the Billboard charts.

A mash-up is made by taking one song's vocals and laying it over another's melody or rhythm track. The producer usually takes two songs with similar tempos and digitally edits the lengths and pitches to create a seamless fit. Creating a mash-up requires raw music tracks, computer editing software, and a strong knowledge of music structure along with a lot of creativity.

Most mash-ups you've heard have not been cleared by the record labels that own the rights to the songs and are, in fact, illegal. Technology helps this underground movement grow, with most mash-ups being circulated on the Internet via blog and file-sharing sites. While some artists, such as BECK, encourage producers to put a creative twist on their music, others go so far as to issue cease and desist orders to musicians who use their songs without permission. Time will tell whether or not record labels and artists will embrace the practice. Until then, the movement will be forced to remain underground.

'the movement will be forced to remain underground.'

I hope it stays there too but if it ever gains momentum then its easy fixed, just dont listen to it.

...if it was done well. Everyone can timestrech Shakira to match Napalm Death's tempo and cut it up in pieces to fit in the music - but this is just poorly executed. Damn! It's embarrassing!

Dont even get me started on the Entombed / Outkast thing!!!!!!

The only one I could really dig was Entombed/Outkast....they seemed to fit together pretty well...maybe it's because out of all the rap/pop groups on this site, Outkast is really the only one I like! No, take that back, I own a Shakira cd too. Haha I can see a whole bunch of posts now saying how un-metal I am!

COMMENT | definitely entertaining...

... but this is more a fun thing - these mash ups are rather, well... simple.
Some of you might be interested in the following:
Breakbeat artist BONG-RA released an EP called "Grindkrusher" where he pays tribute to his metal days.
Mainly he is mutilating old Bolt Thrower songs... Cenotaph of course, hehe.
It has been released on Ad Noiseam Records.
I think it still could be done better but actually it is way better than this here!

i'm typically a fan of mash-ups if they're done right. these are just bad. the only remotely decent one was entombed v outkast. as someone said previously, anyone can time stretch to make songs fit together. the tempos for most of these songs aren't even close and that's why they sound so odd.

The scary thing is that the Napalm Death/ Shakira one actually fits! Actually, it's the best thign I've heard I've heard in quite a long time. I hope they do more of these, it's a good idea. Plus Shakira needs to get down and dirty sometime anyway. :)

COMMENT | I'd love to hear Shakira

do something like this for real. That was pretty cool...not as good
as the classic mash-up of Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious" vocal parts with the opening section of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but still pretty cool. Oh, and one more thing- Missy Elliot rocks!!!!!

blessed be.

p.s. Shakira can get down and dirty with me whenever...wherever. Love those bionic hips! ; )

I'd rather hear this stuff than some shitty Black Metal band that I keep hearing about. That stuff is garbage. I'd rather save my money for the next Stuck Mojo cd instead. :) And at least these mash-ups are better than the Linkin Park/ Jay-Z one that sold millions.

It's rather unfortunate that the dork(s) who assembled this tripe will be receiving so much free publicity.

Also, it's discouraging, but not suprising, that a vast majority of Blabbermouth users are listening to and critiquing these 'creations' as if they are actually a form of art or music which deserves to be taken seriously.
