THE DARKNESS: New Album Update - June 9, 2005
According to a report on Xfm Online, THE DARKNESS have now left the Welsh studio they were based in for the past few months recording their new album and have moved to a London studio to complete guitarist Dan Hawkins' guitar parts and singer Justin Hawkins' vocals.

As for indications of what the follow-up to "Permission to Land" sounds like, a report on the band's web site claims that the record will contain major orchestrations in the form of string arrangement by Paul Buckmaster, famous for his work with MILES DAVIS, THE ROLLING STONES and ELTON JOHN.

The STONES connection doesn’t stop there, as one track features a sitar used by the late great ROLLING STONES' multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones. Justin apparently taught himself how to play it during the sessions and uses it for a massive solo on the as-yet-unnamed song.

As for the recent departure of Frankie Poullain, the bassist's presence has not altered the album's projected fall release date. The statement also points out that the bass on the new record will be played by Dan, as Poullain "had yet to participate in the recording of the album when his exit from the band was announced, so no re-recording of bass parts will be necessary."

"We are sorry to see him [Frankie] go but musical differences are musical differences," Justin added. "The mood in the camp is optimistic. We are coming to terms with the fact that Frankie is no longer in the band."

And finally anyone who thinks the band may be downplaying their more flamboyant and grandiose tendencies on the new album will be happy to hear that while their classic track "Love Is Only A Feeling" featured 13 acoustic guitars, one song on the new album features 15, while another is said to feature 120 individual guitar parts, (and that's before Justin has added his twelve solos).

pentatonic solos. There are many many great ones out there. You don't have to use the dorian mode or any one of the other crazies to make a solo that fits the song. Sometimes I miss straight ahead blues solos. You know.......Rock n Roll. The Darkness are fun and their music is fun. No Hawkins is no Jason Becker or EVH but you don't have to be to write good songs. Take it for what it is or leave it alone.

TO FEATURE SOUNDS OF TOILET FLUSHINGS AND THINGS OF THAT MATTER (IT BLOWS).

HAHA So funny to see fans don't realize the monster. It's bands like Darkness that spawns new ones that are even more horrible. In the end it's like being forced to watch a gay wedding: you couldn't care less and you really don't want to see any touching.

The Darkness need to stop ripping off other bands and should learn a few things from the thousands of death metal bands that all sound exactly the same. That's true music! Pure technical skill without any melody at all, that's what real music is about. You're only aloud to have no originality and rip off other bands if you're underground, don't The Darkness realise this? Ditch the vox and the melody, try to sound exactly like Immolation and they'll be fine.

You want cool technical guitar rock that's fun? That would be Queen...NOT the Darkness

You want full on blues based rock with attitude? That's what Guns'n'Roses (original stuff) is...NOT the Darkness

You want modern, hard edged rock and a bassist being fired story that people care about? That would be Queens of the Stone Age...NOT the Darkness

The Darkness JUST...PLAIN...SUCK...

I noticed a spelling error in the last part of your letter:

"you can delude your self and avoid to see that this is a fact.
but its the way it is...

THE DARKNESS ROCK !"

Suck is not spelt "rock".

Don't mean to be rude as I'm often, but WE'RE NOT avoiding any facts here. We're NOT ignoring the "great side" of this band. We're NOT going to wake one morning and think "Oh, they're not that bad after all".

Ain't gonna happen. As much as I respect the 70's, nice try but WE'RE NOT going to be fooled by yet another lousy singer.

ANYTHING is more interesting in my perspective. I'd rather turn and go back to vintage hair rock. I'm not IGNORING the Queen-like genre--I love all the Queen hits.

But this band is a no-go. No way. Not my money. Fuck em.

No they did NOT get their start on American Idol, for a start they are BRITISH. They became big the old fashioned way - playing underground pubs and clubs until they became noticed by a record company. Thank god they did cause they ROCK!!

The Darkness. Stop taking life so seriously you bunch of yankie doodle dandy boys. Plenty of people like the songs. Remember THE SONGS. I couldn't give a flying badger if they become a mere footnote in rock history; I just like the songs and I wager they are a bunch of twats but who the fuck cares? Too bad the bassist is out - takes away the 'gang' idea.
