METALLICA's 'Enter Sandman' Used To Torture 9/11's '20th Hijacker' - June 14, 2005
According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, METALLICA's "Enter Sandman" was cited in a City Journal magazine story about the treatment at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, of prisoner Mohammed al-Qahtani — known as the 20th hijacker on Sept. 11 — as having been used during Qahtani's interrogation, saying it brought him to tears "because he thought he was hearing the sound of Satan."

Music used as a device to intimidate or aggravate enemies dates back to the Old Testament when Joshua and his army blew their trumpets at Jericho.

In Iraq, heavy metal music has been used to frighten soldiers as U.S. troops seek insurgents. According to London's Express newspaper, the hit parade has included AC/DC's "Shoot to Thrill", "Hell's Bells" and "(You Shook Me) All Night Long".

The people fighting are pathetic did I understand them fighting the military yes. I am in the military I understood why they fight we were seen as an occupying force. but what you should realize is the real iraqis the ones who care about there country realized who was wrong. When we deliver them food, clothing and build shelters and schools for them, or when bring fresh water and generators to them. The real people over there understand that we are there to help they just want there country to be theres, they are like us they dont want to be torture or killed or starved like when sadam was there. Praying for someone is like saying "I drive my car to a random destination and then drive back without getting out or doing anything else that's useful". It's just as useless.

"Hey," a guy in Iraq will say, "I feel a lot better now because John Doe drove his car to a random location tonight."

There's guys out there who put their lives on the line for democracy (or, for all I care, oil franchises) and the best you can do is "pray for them"?

There is no god, no Allah, nothing like that. Don't you think religion is too damn convenient? Doesn't the afterlife sound just a little *too* good to you? Of course it does, because it's all a fairy tale. The bible is a badly written fantasy fiction novel with very bad but centuries-long-unrelenting PR. Religion's sole purpose is to control the masses.

Please, if someone is doing things you consider to be good, don't pray for them. Send them money or flowers or a cookie, but don't pray for them.

America is the biggest world threat with their orthodox Christianity. I predict some serious shit happening in the name of god soon, and it'll be American-made shit.

I had expected people on this board to be able to think for themselves instead of needing to resort to some religious bogus symbol.

Please, next time you say shit like "god bless" and "we'll pray for you", realise that to normal people that translates to "I am a lamb that will follow the leader, I cannot think for myself, and I need a fictitious character to attribute everything to that I do not understand with my feeble mind".

I wonder why they wouldn't also incorporate some Extreme-Doom bands' music. Seems that it would more likely convey that the forces of evil are present and would be very foreign to phyrigian-mode-familiar islamic fundamentalists. Even if they can't understand the lyrics, the ominous tone of the music would probably be very jarring to their psyches.

I think that the best bet might be to pick one Extreme-Doom band and one Death or Black metal band (would just have to do research to determine which style would be more severe / offensive / frightening to the target audience) and play these two songs over and over again, preferably around the clock for many days in a row. This would be especially effective if television screens were implemented playing a variety of frightening images (would place tvs on all sides of the cell), although only if they decided to go without blindfolds...
Oh well, if nothing else works use something ultra-annoying, say Bismarquee's (sp?) "Just a Friend" over and over and over again...that really would be torture!

The article that you site does not any validity. The person who wrote is a philosopher. He is not arguing evolution on scientific bases, but on religious bases. He does not provide any scientific evidence of why the theory of evolution is wrong. If he had done that then I might have taken him more seriously.

you are the one who posed the quesiton about thermodynamics. i just wanted to know if you understand what you are writing about. it is easy to throw out words like thermodynamic and evolution, but you should have some understanding of it before you make statements. it is lame brained to dodge the question and label people as liberals when you have no arguement. to answer your question, evolution does not violate any phyical law, including the 2nd law of thermodynamics.

here is an editoral by the editor of Nature Structural & Molecular Biology 12, 101 (2005)

Theory, fact and the origin of life

The latest in the fight over the teaching of evolution in classrooms across America is taking place in Pennsylvania, but local and state school boards in Maryland, Georgia, Ohio, Missouri, South Carolina and Kansas have wrestled with the issue as well.

Over the past 80 years states have attempted to either prohibit the teaching of evolution in public school science classes or counter it with references to the religious doctrine of creationism. In 1987, the US Supreme Court seemed to settle this issue arguing that the state cannot 'restructure the science curriculum to conform with a particular religious viewpoint.'

The latest argument against Darwinism is known as 'intelligent design.' Believers of intelligent design hold that life is so complex that it cannot be explained by the random workings of natural selection. Instead, if evolution occurred at all it could only have been directed by a creator.

The use of intelligent design to limit the teaching of evolution recently came in the form of a statement that school administrators in Dover, Pennsylvania are expected to read saying (among other things) that 'because Darwin's theory is a theory, it continues to be tested as new evidence is discovered. The theory is not a fact.'

The religious, constitutional, and political ramifications of intelligent design can and will continue to be debated but not here (at least not right now). Instead, there are two factual problems with the above statement that are worth considering. First, colloquial definitions of the word 'theory' are used to denigrate the place of evolution in the world of scientific knowledge. In science, an idea can be a theory and a fact at the same time. Stephen J. Gould put this well:

In the American vernacular, "theory" often means "imperfect fact"—part of a hierarchy of confidence running downhill from fact to theory to hypothesis to guess. Thus the power of the creationist argument: evolution is "only" a theory and intense debate now rages about many aspects of the theory. If evolution is worse than a fact, and scientists can't even make up their minds about the theory, then what confidence can we have in it? Indeed, President Reagan echoed this argument before an evangelical group in Dallas when he said (in what I devoutly hope was campaign rhetoric): 'Well, it is a theory. It is a scientific theory only, and it has in recent years been challenged in the world of science - that is, not believed in the scientific community to be as infallible as it once was.'

Well evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape-like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered.

Moreover, "fact" doesn't mean "absolute certainty"; there ain't no such animal in an exciting and complex world. The final proofs of logic and mathematics flow deductively from stated premises and achieve certainty only because they are not about the empirical world. Evolutionists make no claim for perpetual truth, though creationists often do (and then attack us falsely for a style of argument that they themselves favor). In science "fact" can only mean "confirmed to such a degree that it would be perverse to withhold provisional consent." I suppose that apples might start to rise tomorrow, but the possibility does not merit equal time in physics classrooms.

Evolutionists have been very clear about this distinction of fact and theory from the very beginning, if only because we have always acknowledged how far we are from completely understanding the mechanisms (theory) by which evolution (fact) occurred. Darwin continually emphasized the difference between his two great and separate accomplishments: establishing the fact of evolution, and proposing a theory—natural selection—to explain the mechanism of evolution.

- Stephen J. Gould, "Evolution as Fact and Theory" Discover, May 1981

The second point is that Darwin's theory of evolution is silent on the 'origin of living things' - that is, how life on earth began. Darwin himself mused that life could have arisen 'in some warm little pond.' For much of the 20th century origin of life research has sought to understand how spontaneous interactions among relatively simple molecules in the primordial soup and the prebiotic world could have formed life's last common ancestor.

Origin of life research is built on three important findings: the basic small molecules of life can be made under plausible prebiotic conditions (the Urey-Miller experiment); phospholipids spontaneously form lipid bilayers, the basic structure of a cell membrane; and last, but certainly not least, random RNA molecules can be selected for the capacity to produce more of themselves (ribozymes).

So the next time you are asked about evolution and intelligent design you can avoid the more hot button issues—lack of objective scientific support and separation of Church and State—and instead take the philosophical highground and talk about the importance of knowing the difference between theories and facts and why Darwinism and evolution have nothing to do with how living things came to be, just what happened once they were here.

I am working and I don’t have time to be posting every minute. I read your thermo argument, but I disagree with your analysis. It is not simply the matter of things becoming ordered on a macroscopic level that you see they the eye, but you have to look at the chemical aspects at the atomic level and the amount of heat that is released or absorbed from a chemical reaction. There is an area of thermodynamics called statistical mechanics which connects macroscopic observation by analyzing the reaction or process at the atomic level using quantum mechanics. I have to get back to work. I could write more on this later.

You really should read some Richard Dawkins!
An example:

http://www.scienceforums.com/printthread.php?t=2691&page=2&pp=10

"The 'Creationist', 'tornado in a junkyard forming a 747' way

Take the 500 coins and flip them all at once. Did you get all heads? Nope. Pick them up and flip them again. Continue this process until you finally get all 500 coins to land heads in a single toss.

The probability of success in a single shot is 1 in 2^500, or about 1 in 10^150. You could have every human on the face of the Earth do nothing but flip coins all day - not stopping to eat, sleep, work, etc. - as fast as they can, for their entire lives, and you still won't succeed. In fact, instead of just Earthlings flipping coins, you could assume that every of the assumed 10^20 planets in the known universe had Earth-population of humans on it and all of those humans also did nothing but flip coins 24-7-365, for their entire lives. Still won't succeed.

The evolutionist's, incremental cumulative selection way

Starting with coin x = 1, take coin x and flip it. Did it lands heads? If not, flip it again. When it does land heads, retain it as head and the move on to the next coin (set x = x + 1).

On average it will take just 2 flips to get any given coin to land heads. With 500 coins in all, it will take only about 2 * 500 = 1000 total flips of coins to succeed. A single person could succeed in only a matter of an hour or so.

There's a HUGE difference between an all-at-once, fully formed Creationist method and the evolutionist's cumulative selection method. Instead of requiring roughtly 2^500 flips it takes only about 2*500 flips."

Ok, everyone is stuck on evolution vs creation.

Wrong argument.

The true argument is this: Is there a supreme being who created the universe, or did it all magically form from nothing without any components of any sort, regardless of state?

Because without a Universe, there can be no life as we know it, ergo: no evolution vs creation argument.

It is what is known as a pre-requisite to there being life.

For life to exist, there must first be SOMEPLACE FOR IT TO EXIST.

Deal with it.

Let's see, the terrorists and their ilk capture non-combatants, then threaten to execute on film if their demands aren't met, correct?

Well, my solution is as old as time:

for ever hostage they kill you kill 100 of them without negotiation.

they keep it up, you raise it to 500.

they still keep it up you take out a town, then a city.

soon thy'll either change their tactics or face extinction.

That is actually a better and more interesting argument; in taking a look at the "creationism" vs. "evolution", most people have their opinions firmly set in concrete and most cannot approach the arguments without emotion.

Also, "It's a Small World" should definitely be banned world-wide as a possible "crime against humanity". I really believe that that song would drive anyone insane, probably inside of 24 hours of continuous play! That IS torture!

they are right about everything. I 've seen this dude (field jameshet) cut and paste these same lame arguments into multiple other threads. Wow, you have one whole source, versus all of science. This is the stupidest argument I've ever heard: Answer me this: Does a partialy constructed eye work? If an animal was trying to "evolutionize" an eye, it would die if the eye was brought about by millions of years, and subtle changes (lets not forget changes need to be made to the brain, skeleton, nervous, and circulatory system as well to accomodate a new eye). These changes have to occur all at once for the eye to work, or evolution should throw it out based on the "only animals best adapted to ther environment will survive" argument, because a partially constructed, non working eye will hinder an animal."

You obviously don't understand, here it is, real simple. In every generation of animals there are traits handed down by parent, but there are also genetic mutations, sometimes detrimental to fulfilling reproduction and some not. One example, very simple. There is a breed of blue and green fish, who live in green algae, who get eaten by bigger fish. Due to a genetic mutation, some of the fish get born all green. These fish blend into algae more easily, therefore less get eaten, more reproduce, and now there's more green fish the blue-green fish. The blue-green fish may die out by getting pushed out of its environment, or it may stay and at some point may end up forming it's own distinct species. This is what happens and is the reason why there are no monkey men, smarter, better adapted hominids encroached on their territory, took their food, took their territory because they are better adapted.

But wait, there, as you derogatively term them "monkey men". Have you ever studied the native people of Australia and surrounding islands. These people have 44 chromosomes, different skull structure, different brain structure. The reason they are still there(and all of the other weird animals) is because they were separated from these new, better adapted animals that would have over-ran them had they been attempting to co-exist in the same environment.

Also, if you knew what you were talking about, you would understand that the 2nd law of thermodynamics really has no application to evolution and can't prove or disprove anything; that's like trying to apply the laws of the weak force and saying it's impossible to fly a plane with the calculations, the law is not applicable in the circumstances mentioned.

Regarding evolution, the way I think of it sits between the Darwinian theroy and the Lamarckian theory(I'm sure you know all about Lamarck too.

And finally, kind of on topic, the band to torture insurgents best would be Agoraphobic Nosebleed, as stated by Kannibal Korpse, followed by Anaal Nathrakh and Nile.

They are not.

Like it or not, they want the entire world for Islam.

I for one, am quite happy the way I am and do not wish to convert.

That fact alone makes me their sworn enemy, and a viable target in their eyes.

Like it or not, there is a war going on between their worldview, and the western worldview.

One side must lose, I distinctly prefer it to be theirs.

You obviously didn't read my whole post, it answers your last couple of questions. I'm sure you're brain gets tired after all those words. Don't worry, you can go back and finish later.

And yes, you are correct about one thing, there are more genetic mutations that are detrimental to the species than helpful, this does not change any of the other facts though.

Bacteria and viruses also evolve, why the fuck do you think they have to make new flushots every couple years, why we can't get tid of AIDS or many other viruses: they mutate, they evolve. So did God create harmful viruses to punish the wicked, or just for the fun of watching people die agonizing, protracted deaths.

Regarding fossil evidence, yes, it is a fact we have not dug up every fossil on earth so we do not have complete fossil histories of every animal and plant, well, it will never happen, so I guess that means God made it all.

Have any other interesting "alternate theories" of anything else. An alternate theory of gravity, theory of relativity( everything is relative depending on the amount of God's light you hold within your soul, maybe at the "theoretical" speed of light you turn into a beautiful flower?)

This is in no way knocking you man. I have a lot of respect for you. I'm just adding to this little debate because I think shit like this is fun...

I've always been more of a Darwin thinker on this issue... even though I believe he, like the Bible, was full of holes. The reason for this is simple. In my opinion, no one human can fully understand the origins of this thing we call life. It's like every one of us has a purpose here, and we all strive for at least one personal goal before we die... but at the same time, no human is capable of knowing the truth.

The main reason I believe in evolution is simply this: In many different countries, people have adapted/evolved into their particular environment. When people first settled Peru, it was very difficult to breath because of the higher elevations. Today, that same race of people are naturally born with larger lungs for better air intake, and they also have shorter arms. The reason for this is because when it gets cold in higher elevations, the fingers are the first things to become frostbitten, but if the arms are shorter, blood can flow through them faster. That's just one example of evolution. To me, that makes a lot more sense than the Tower of Babel in the Bible... when it comes to describing why people are so different in different parts of the world. Another example would be Africa. Hot, not much shade... so people evolved with very dark skin over time (I believe this happened when Continental Drift first started and "Africa" moved south. Before that, I believe everone had pretty much the same appearance.) This dark skin protects them from UV radiation better, and since the eyes are very sensitive to light, they also developed very dark eyes.

As far as us evolving from ape-like creatures. I need to remind all of you that say they were "monkeys" and people who say things like "why are there still monkeys around if we evolved from them." We did not evolve from "monkeys." They were ape-like creatures that no longer exist because we are them. They walked upright. There are things about our own anatomy that scientists are debating right now. They say that eventually, people may be born without the appendix, since it's no longer necessary. That's only speculation though, and nothing but. It's not even good enough to be called theory. They also say that our canines used to be longer and that we used to have a tail. Some would argue; "Why would we have a tail bone, if we never had a tail." Again, only speculation, but deserving of further study.

As far as creationism, it's just as hard to prove that as it is to prove evolution.... but the main difference is this: Scientists will normally admit that Darwinism is only theory.... however religious zealots will always claim theirs is COLD HARD FACT, and NEVER give it a second though.... even though they have even less evidence.

Anyway, that's my though....

And I can't believe it, I didn't say the word fuck once in this entire post.... oops....

You know the bible, good. Then I can get to the point seeing as you'll already know know the chapter & verse I speak of.

In Isaiah, Jehovah ( Yahweh) states that there are no other gods other than Himself, nor were there any gods prior to Him, nor will there be any gods after Him.

you'll also know God always existed and had no begining, and will have no end. He existed for eternity past, and will exist for the eternal future.

Nice try on the evolution pitch tho, sounds like you've been reading some Mormon theology as well heh

In answer to your question concerning my use of the word magic, can you think of another way to describe an origin of the Universe that requires no material whatsoever regardless of state, and no designer/builder?

Believing that the Universe spontaneously formed from utter, complete, and total nothingness takes a lot more faith than believing in God ever will.
