BILLY CORGAN Discusses SMASHING PUMPKINS Reunion - June 22, 2005
Billy Corgan spoke to Jim Derogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times about his decision to announce the reunion of the SMASHING PUMPKINS, one of the biggest bands of the alternative-rock era, and the most successful group Chicago has ever produced.

Corgan announced the reunion on Tuesday via full-page advertisements in both the Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune. The estimated combined cost of both ads is about $37,000.

"For a year now I have walked around with a secret," Corgan wrote in the ad. "Now I want you to be among the first to know that I have made plans to renew and revive the SMASHING PUMPKINS. I want my band back, and my songs and my dreams. In this desire I feel I have come home again."

But exactly what Corgan meant by that is unclear, and he declined to elaborate.

"The door is clearly open," the star said when asked if he will perform again with the best-known lineup of drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, guitarist James Iha and bassist D'Arcy Wretzky. "What I've done is I've set the intention. It's going to happen."

Does that mean that Corgan has spoken with his former bandmates?

"I don't want to talk about the specifics," he said. "I'm just going to take the CIA route of 'mum's the word.' The door is open. Here's the thing: I am ready to go back to the work of the band."

Of his former bandmates, Corgan remains closest to Chamberlin, who performed with the singer and songwriter in the post-PUMPKINS band ZWAN, and who appears on some tracks on Corgan's new solo album, "The Future Embrace".

Sources said some of Corgan's closest advisers questioned the wisdom of announcing the reunion in the midst of launching his solo career, which he said will be ongoing even as the SMASHING PUMPKINS return. Corgan performs two sold-out solo shows July 5-6 at the Vic Theatre, and he hosted a listening party and CD-signing session for "The Future Embrace" Tuesday night at the Adler Planetarium.

"If I [announced the reunion] before, which would obviously promote the record, it would only be about that, and it would only overshadow the record," Corgan said when asked about the timing of his announcement. "To me, this is the perfect spot: It's the summer solstice, the full moon — the drama is there."

Ever the contrarian, Corgan promised that the SMASHING PUMPKINS won't follow the model of other successful alt-rock reunions, including the PIXIES.

"For anybody who gets this sort of rosy picture of a PIXIES-esque reunion, it ain't gonna be like that," the bandleader said. "I am literally going to pick up the thread of what it meant to be in that band, which is to light things on fire and break things in half."

If you are the first to post, it's a first post. Unless they brag about it and try to be first in every post, what's the fucking deal you're crying about.

;)

I sampled 2 tracks from Corgan's new solo album, and like I said in the last SP thread, it's too washed up and gentle.

I think it's true, the first album by SP was really cool. Back in the day, when TODAY was out (around the same time as Radiohead's CREEP) ... it was great. STP was starting, and so was RATM. Great times.

I must agree with punchy on this one. They were great when they first came out. Ah, the good old days when everything was starting anew. I like it because it got all of the hair bands off of the airways. I was never of fan of the style. Now, the Pumpkins might be good again but they need to just concentrate on good songs and distorted guitars, they way they started, before Billy went half electronica on everybody.

As far as I am concerned Smashing Pumpkins is over. The last show was in chicago in 2000 leave it like that. Corgan has an ego the size of Chicago. He is trying to regain his stardom cause his solo record Bombed

I cannot stand this band. Nor can I stand Billy Corgan. Whiny, grating vocals, crappy guitar tone, crappy guitar playing in general. Like my esteemed colleague BP said, one man's trash is another man's gold.

Enjoy. That is all.

Plain and simple... I hated this band, and am sad to hear that I'll have to deal with their unique brand of shit once again.

And what the fuck is up with this board? Actual metal and rock bands get blasted every day, yet they post something about some suckass Grunge band and everyone's like "Oh wow, cool! I like them!"

You're all fucking gay. You blast Dave Mustaine but praise Corgan? Poser-ass losers.

Every other word out of Billy's mouth is "I" or me. I guess even in the Smashing pumpkins, it's all about him. "I want band back. My songs back." Really Billy? Ever thought of what the rest of your band might want? The world don't revolve around you dude.

That said: I think Siamese Dream is one of the best alt rock records ever. Fuckin get to work boys.

Throw on "Siva" from Gish. That guitar solo is fucking great, and I think Billy's voice is pretty solid.

As for the reunion, let's pray there's not another "Machina" or "Adore" in our midst.

that's who corgan's trying to be...not bowie. gish and siamese dream were damn good...i saw them open for guns n roses and they were great. after that it all went up in an ego fueled inferno. he actually can play...he doesn't show it for some reason, but i've seen him do it. and the song from the "singles" soundtrack was good.

This reunion, like most, is probably just about the money. I also think Billy misses getting his ass kissed by his fans. Siamese Dream was good, Gish wasnt bad either. Adore was really the beginning of the end. If they do reunite, they better not release any of that electronic/goth shit again. That was pure crap. As for Billy as a guitar player, he's not bad but he's not great either. Pretty sloppy most of the time when it comes to leads but atleast he made an effort and soloed in the earlier days.
