MELVINS Part Ways With Bassist
- June 23, 2005
|
|
|
MELVINS have parted ways with bassist Kevin Rutmanis. No reason was given for Kevin's departure. The band are currently in the middle of a European festival tour with David Scott Stone (UNWOUND, SLUG, THE GET HUSTLE) filling in on bass.
In other news, TheMelvins.net is reporting that Alternative Tentacles will be releasing both the "Mangled Demos from 1983" and "Pigs of the Roman Empire" albums on vinyl this August. Also, in late September they will be issuing the second installment from the Jello Biafra and the MELVINS collaboration, reportedly titled "Sieg Howdy". A six-track EP, the release will include remixes by Al Jourgensen of MINISTRY, Dalek, Dale Crover, and a cover of ALICE COOPER's "Halo of Flies".

One of the most annoying live bands period. When they toured with Helmet in '97, they played a song for about 20+ minutes of just distortion and no one was on the same page. To top it off, the drummer was wearing a speedo and they had the Energizer Bunny hopping around on the stage in a big pink outfit. It was humorous but at the same time, just ridiculous. I know they have been around for years and have a huge following but they gave me a headache and people were throwing shit at them.

That walks its own path, with no regard for trends, sales or acceptance. Much respect to them.

that "20+ minutes" tune was a Pink Floyd cover of Interstellar Overdrive. Melvins did it exactly the way Pink Floyd (w/ Sid Barrett) did it their song. Melvins do the greatest covers!

Wow...that sucks. I think they really liked Rutmanis...I remember them saying that with him, the band was totally complete. I wonder why he is leaving? Ah well, it was to be expected, I guess.

They have to be one of the worst bands ever. When will they finally realize they can't play their instruments or write a good song?

You obviously do not have much knowledge in the ways of playing instruments or writing good songs. Melvins are the punkest of punk, the most metal of metal. Dale Crover is one of my favorite drummers, he's like a cross between Dave Grohl and Danney Carey. And these guys do not stop playing music. I have 25+ albums with Buzz on them(19 Melvins)
Melvins fucking rule, Kevin was a fucking cool bass player, I'm sure they'll get someone good.

About time someone gave Dale Crover his respect due. The Mangled demos cd is fucking great. I've been on a big stag kick lately. A very underrated album I think.

Your description was almost exactly like the first time I saw the Melvins, opening up for White Zombie in good old Spokane, WA. I really thought the hardcore Zombie metal dudes were going to hurt the Melvins, though this only seemed to make them draw the song out longer with more feedback.

Stag and the Crybaby are 2 of my favorites. The song (divorced) with Danny Carey and Crover trading fills fucking rules.

Yeah, you could kind of tell. At one point, maybe after the Floyd cover, everybody stopped playing and the bass player(was it Kevin or the other guy) just sat there for 10 minutes+ in his big cowboy hat holding one feedback note, maybe bending it every once in a while for a little flavor, with all the Zombie fans yelling and throwing shit at him.

Curious, I've seen them live three days ago, with Fantômas supporting and Terry Bozzio stepping in for Dave Lombardo. Great show.

That's an odd pairing. The only sense I see it making is that the melvins are big kiss fans. I'm not one for kiss really but seeing that would have been great.

I was referring to the shows they were supposed to play with Jello - performing songs from that album and some DK songs - not just Buzz playing. I'm jealous though that I didnt catch the Fantomas show

But I never warmed to Kevin or his bass playing. He made the band less heavy IMO. They should hire Billy Gould.
