German Heavy Metal Fan Dies After Taking Part In 'Wall Of Death'

A 26-year-old German heavy metal fan died over the weekend from injuries sustained at the Pressure Festival in in Herne (near Dortmund/Bochum), Germany. The accident occured Saturday when 26-year-old — whose named hasn't been released by the German media — took part in the "wall of death," a form of concert dancing where the crowd is split down the middle and on the signal, both sides ram into each other. The impact on the fan's liver was reportedly so significant that he died the same night at a nearby hospital. The German media, especially regional TV, are already talking about "casualties at a heavy metal concert", and calling the wall of death an "aggressive" form of dance. The "wall of death" was famously popularized by LAMB OF GOD during their Ozzfest 2004 stint where it became a regular part of the group's live performance. [Click here to download a Quicktime video file recorded during last year's Ozzfest.] In an interview with On Track Magazine conducted a few months ago, LAMB OF GOD drummer Chris Adler was asked if the band ever feel concerned with the safety of their fans or if it is an "every fan for himself" kind of attitude. "No, absolutely not, we definitely are concerned," Adler replied. "Y'know, we were doin' that Wall of Death for awhile, we were doin' it through the Ozzfest and we played a show on an off-date of Ozzfest where we headlined and we did the Wall of Death. And that night after the show we came backstage and there were two kids layin' there with broken legs. We went and talked to 'em and did our best to comfort 'em while they were waitin' for the ambulance and they were excited to meet us or whatever, but seein' somebody hurt after that kinda thing definitely made us stop and think about it a minute: and since that night we haven't done the Wall of Death again. It's not about people getting hurt, it's about people havin' fun and you're right, the audience is absolutely insane and we're not gonna throw out shoulder pads so nobody gets hurt. It is, in one way, every man for himself, but you gotta do your best to keep your eye out for each other when you're out there doing those things 'cause it can get pretty wild. And I think the energy and the release that we have as a band on stage and that the fans are able to have coming to see our live show, is really probably the most contagious thing about this band. I don't think we're writing records with big singles on 'em or metal anthems that people will never forget, I think it's about the show. And I think that's what's caught on and it's bringing more people out each time because of the stories, because of the fun that people are having; because the total insanity and the whole vibe. I get goose bumps when we take the stage sometimes and you can just see the eyes of these people lookin' at you, and they're all crazy. It's like somebody just released an entire prison yard to come to our show; it gets totally nuts. And I think as long as nobody gets hurt and everybody has a good time and they're able to let out a lot of the aggression and love doin' what they’re doin', then it’s more power to 'em and we're havin' a blast with it." This is really sad. But he had to have known he would get hurt taking part in something like that. If I get tired or feel like I can't hang I get out of the pit and watch out for everyone around me. Not everyone shares my sentiments for things like this, though. Rest In Peace, whoever you may be.
I really can do without having the media milking this for all the ratings and negative publicity for Extreme Music. I believe it's had enough of that shit at this point. They probably don't even know the true origins of the pit or what it's like to be in a real pit with people who know what they are doing. This sucks, a lot. It really does.

How are Lamb Of God partly responsible for anything to do with a show in Germany they weren't even a part of? That makes no sense whatsoever. It's ultimately up to the audience if they want to do something like the "Wall Of Death", and if they do they have to know what the consequences could be if they do. Lamb Of God isn't responsible for this incident at all.

Let's see.... The Wall Of Death started in the Hardcore scene back in the early 80's and in all that time there was not a single recorded death. Now fast forward 20 years and it has been co-opted by METAL fans and someone died. What does that tell you? It tells me the same thing as all of these stage dive accidents. METAL fans are IDIOTS.

Yeah that was pretty bad. But that was a bit necessary to catch the guy because it was outright murder and was by no means an accident. I'm glad Pepper spoke out against what happened almost immediately as well. That probably eased a lot of tension and negative feelings people had towards Metal.
The Wall of Death has been around for years (Decades?) and it is a lot of fun to take a part in. It's not really all that dangerous unless you are with some stupid ass nu-metal or hardcore kids who think doing spin kicks and fucking Street Fighter 2 Turbo shit is ok in mosh pits. Note: These kids weigh 90 pounds and wear girl pants with studded belts. Last year's Ozzfest had a lot of kids like this. They took a lot of fun out of the shows.
Having to stop moshing for fear of getting some scrawny fuck's knee in your throat because he is "dancing" isn't fun. Watching some fat fuck (I'm fat too yes but not stupid) knee drop some chick and not even stop to apologize or to see if she is hurt is not fucking fun.

When you participate in something like this, there is probably going to be some consequences involved. Think before your act. Lamb Of God is in no way responsible for this. You could get killed in a friggin mosh pit for godsake if someone hit you right. If you don't want to get hurt, don't do it. I'm sure it's a huge rusjh to do, but it's nothing I would participate in myself..although to watch it is fuckin crazy.

I've participated in a Wall of Death the 3 times I've seen Chimaira, (I've never seen any other band ask for one) and in my experiance they're no more dangerous than a circle-pit, so chances are this was a freak accident, like that poor bastard who stage dived into a concrete pillar in the states a few years back.

these thing are all"do-it-at-your-own-risk"things....The first time I saw Pantera in '95(with type o opening,sooo killer) a kid I knew from school broke his neck crowd surfing cause he was dropped,and last the lst time I saw him he was still in a wheel chair but I guess he was upgraded to partial paralysis. Either way,as fun as it may seem to be...you have to keep in mind that not everyone is looking out for your best interest.

is the fact that you get a mob mentality going and I am too busy saving my own ass to try and save someone else's. If i'm in the clear,and someone falls next to me...then i help out. I got into the pit for Slayer in indianapolis with a fractured ankle....knowing damn welll I could of broke it the rest of the way...I hobbled around,bumping people and I took a few good hits,got knocked down,but I got helped up by people on the outerrim of the pit. Someone i didn't know came out and helped me up,and after having a little fun and realizing that i was putting my drunk ass in a potentially dangerous situation,i quit,and enjoyed the rest of the show.
if you are at a Slayer show and can resist the urge to jump in the pit during "War Ensemble",then you must be made of fucking stone.

It had as much chance of happening at a gig in a America as it does in Europe or any other continent. It didnt have anything to do with what "scene" was involved either, It had as much chance of happening at a Hardcore gig as it did a Metal gig.

I posted earlier that it has stemmed from Dime's murder,the c.o.C show incident,ect. You have it dead on man...I've become a little tired of hearing"oh this shit only happens in the States" and now it goes to show that it is indeed tragic but it happens everywhere...not in isolated incidents in America,but the world abroad.
I have posted much of the same that you have in those previous threads...I posted on this at the beginning,maybe I started the shit. I'm not saying that proudly but my whole reason for posting so much on this thread is that,as everyone else has said,it doesn't matter what the location is...fact is that we all need to be a little more sensible at metal shows and watch out for everyone's safety as well as our own, and where it happens is moot point. the fact that it does happen and can be avoided is the real issue.

Well, it's called Wall of Death you know...it doesn't surprise me that someone died.
I'm all about having a good time at a show...as longs as the hardcore-ninja-kiddies lay back, and don't hit me, I'll be okay....they can kill each other., as long as they don't hit me...as a matter of fact, it would be cool if we got rid of all these "i've got too much math homework" dancers...imo, the wall of death is stupid, I am about listening to the music and enjoyning the experience, but that's why I am into Prog, I am more into the music, not nonsene brutality....if I see anyone moshing at a prog show, I get so pissed cause it's just not required in this genre...LoG has ok songs, but overall they suck, and doing the wall of death is stupid, what if someone can't escape? What if they went to see Opeth or Gwar (SOTU) and during the LoG show after these, they are just chilling, but then a 150 pund 6 foot 8 guy comes ramming at him...that would suck...fuck lamb of god.

i went to ozzfest last year and watched lamb of god. i didnt really know who they was but when they came out they rocked so i got pretty close to watch them. when they started telling people to clear a path for the wall of death i got the hell out of the way fast. and now i am still here. if you cant handle something like that get the hell out of the way. but i must admit that it was bad ass watching it from a distance

The 'Wall Of Death' was allready used by SICK OF IT ALL a few years ago (long before Lamb of God did it) and is called 'Braveheart'. (happend a few days ago at Graspop with no injuries!)
Some dumbos just don't use their heads and act like fuckin idiots with the result that people die!!!
Do what you want at shows as long as you DON'T FUCKING KILL ANYONE!!!! or GET KILLED for that matter!

hippieshateslayer is just reacting to the oh-so-superior attitude emanating from some (but not many, I hope) European metalheads posting on this website how much of a violent shit hole America is. He even admitted as much earlier. There's over a quarter of a billion people living in the United States, and for anyone to generalize or pigeonhole a population of such vast numbers....well, you're a fucking intellectual lightweight.
I am sooooo fucking sick of the America vs. Europe fighting on this website. Are we all not, as Exodus so brilliantly put it, "Bonded by Blood," i.e., our love of metal (including both American and European bands)??? I am an American, and I love my country, but I've also been to Europe, love it too, and can't wait to go back. Our next trip will probably be to Italy, because my wife is 100% Italian and still has some relatives alive in "the old country." I don't understand why some of you assholes have to engage in such pointless arguments. Do you REALLY think you're going to convince an American to hate America????? Or make a European hate Europe?????

That bald guy is hilarious. He got fuckin clobbered. This is the first I've heard of "the wall of death". It's probably the stupidest thing I've heard of, too. When I go to shows I like to watch instead of acting like a complete fuck and getting hurt. This is why MeTal gets a bad rap. It makes the MeTal community(as stupid as that sounds) look like a bunch of barbaric assholes that are trying to be cool. You are a person with excellent taste in music, that's what you are. I'll let your negative opinion of Alice Cooper slide because you mentioned some grade-A bands in your above posting. As for Pantera....I see where you're coming from, but I can easily forgive them when I listen to "Vulgar Display of Power."
I was trying to point out that while there's plenty of assholes living in America, it's not like assholes are indigenous to America...they're a worldwide plague. There's a whole shitload of us here in the U.S. that you'd be proud to be friends with.
By the way, I outgrew moshing about eight years ago, but even back then, I doubt I'd ever participate in anything called the "Wall of Death."

Hey guys, just to let you know, the dude did not die because of the "WOD". I know all the media are saying this, but someone talked to one of the ambulance guys and that accident happened at a certain point of time where there was no wall of death.
Of course, this doesn't make the situation less tragic nor does it change the sad fact and there's no doubt that violent dancing can be dangerous, but it was not bc of the WOD.
I was at this this festival and what makes me wonder more is that none of us visitors heard about this accident until today. The show just continued like nothing happened - I mean, at least the organiser could have told the bands or the people that there was an accident and therefore to "take it slow", right?
I don't know...just my 2 cents. RIP, whoever you are.

I saw Lamb of God at Sounds of the Underground Sunday in Philly, and there certainly was a wall of death. In the dark no to mention. Full Blown Chaos had one too. Don't get me wrong I love Lamb of God, I don't fault them. Fans of metal do this ridiculous hardcore dancing regardless of Randy inciting it or not. I love metal, but it has never made me wanna spin my arms and kick people. So now we have a fan who has had a sensless death all because of sensless dancing. Oh well, I think we all know it will continue.

all we try to do is the up and down mosh pits, they look like human oceans.. when people in the pits try and do the "American mosh" by moving side to side, shit gets dangerous, ur ankles arent designed for that
whats even worse are those STUPID fucking circles people make and push each other around. this wall of death is fucking stupid
at mudvayne and megadeth, i got out of the mosh after 1 song and just went on the balcony and watched them from there and enjoyed the show. moshing is fun (pantera's pit was great, up and down and no punching and crap.. rammsteins was literally like the entire concert was the ocean, an amazing sight)

I just want to point out that you don't have to be willing to be a participant. At Ozzfest last year, I swam upstream against the WoD, and still about got smooshed (or worse, lost my bag of merch)!
Circle pits, etc. are fine; it's when mobs do shit on a mass scale that it gets scary.

I saw Chimaira with Slipknot, FF, and Full Blown Chaos in West Palm and Chimaira also does the WoD. THat shit was fuckin fun. For some reason when Chimaira's singer told everyone to 'charge', the guy in front of me just jumped up and down. So I ran his retarded ass over. Maybe he got a broken something, but hey, if he woulda listened to instructions he still woulda been ok.
Either way, the WoD is dangerous as fuck, but also really fun.

thanks for that info. Just goes to show how full of shit the media are. I was at the Roskilde festival where 9 people died during a Pearl Jam show. The day after newspapers wrote that the accident happened during the song 'Alive', which is just bullshit. They just wanted a good angle on the story and changed the facts around to fit in with it.

I saw Hatebreed do that thing with a huge crowd on the Slayer/Mastodon/Shitknot tour and i did NOT get in the middle of it. It was the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

Yeah well, what can you expect. "Wall Of Death" sounds way more dangerous than just "moshing" or even "violent dancing". You know how the media are - wall of death just sound more LURID and the media just take the chance to exploit that incident., like always.
Even the official police report said nothing about the wall of death, so I guess it's true. Plus, the guy eventually died from the "livershot" (that dance move) and this is more likely to happen with "just" moshing than with the WOD.
Either way, as far as I can remember there was no WOD on that Friday when that thing with the dude happened. WOD only happened with Walls of Jericho, Heaven Shall Burn and Sick Of It All and none of these bands played on Friday.
This is tragic accident that should not have happened, but on the other hand going into the moshpit is kind of "risky", that's why I always watch the bands from a good distance.

Hi,
a small update: the todays police report and the autopsy have confirmed that his death had nothing do to with Wall Of Death and obviously not with violent dancing as well.
He had a cardiac defect which eventually caused his death.
