Police: German Heavy Metal Fan's Death Unrelated To Concert 'Slam-Dancing'

The 26-year-old heavy metal fan who passed away during this past weekend's Pressure Festival in Germany died from complications brought about by a pre-existing heart condition and not as a result of injuries sustained while taking part in an aggressive form of slam-dancing, police in Bochum, Germany announced on Tuesday (June 28). The cause of Marco Grewen's death was found to be unrelated to the extreme type of "moshing" called "wall of death," a form of concert dancing where the crowd is split down the middle and on the signal, both sides ram into each other. The German media had previously reported that approximately 2,000 people took part in the "wall of death" during HATEBREED's performance at the festival. A total of 25 people were reportedly taken to local hospitals to be treated for various injuries — including fractures — sustained during the three-day event. The "wall of death" was famously popularized by LAMB OF GOD during their Ozzfest 2004 stint where it became a regular part of the group's live performance. I hate when people say LoG popularized the wall of death. Chimera did Wall of Death at least 2 years before LoG. They were sick at ozzfest with that. I was in it and nothing happened to me so fuck that shit

I dislike Hatebreed a lot. Their music is so fucking boring, and with this incident, I dunno, it just made me hate them more. I hate the Wall of death, but that's just my opinion. I saw Hatebreed last year and they tried doing it, and everybody just flipped their fingers at them....only people who don't care about their lifes would partake in such a stupid event. The real casaulties are not those who die because of slamming in the Wall of death, the real casaualties are those who find themselves trapped in this act of idiocy. Since this guy supposingly did participate because he wanted to, then I guess it his fault..not Hatebreed's, not metal's, not the WoD's. He knew he had heart problems (not sure, but I am assuming) so he knew that being there could be potentially dangerous. Anyway, rip and stay heavy...btw new Arch Enemy track is pretty cool, although I dislike the vocals.

That said i saw hatebreed a few weeks ago and it was the best goddam show ive ever seen with the biggest fricken moshpits ive ever seen and ive seen more than my fair share of gigs. And to all those shitheads who say Wall of death is dangerous, of course it is but so is moshing. In fact more people get hurt by ordianary moshing than any wall of death.
And "innocent" people do not get caught up in the wall of death unless they want to. It generally takes about a minute between when the crowd is split and when the the wall actually crashes together. Thats loads of time to get out of the way if you want to. Most of the idiots here are so full of shit its unbelievable

to me wall of death,and all this kungfu /harcore bullshit going on in mosh pits now adays is quite stupid and gay.what happend to just chilling back listening to your favorite band rock out,with just beer,and maybe a pack of cigs to entertain u.sure mosh pits are fun ocassionally but only when its fun people involeved who only will push u around now its stupid cause u have to worry about getting punched,or kicked.mosh pits blow now this wall of death thing just contiues the theory.even if it started 2 years ago it sounds dangeorus now and im sure it did then.

i know i just mean US fans and obviously there are a few alright ones. But even watching interviews with american fans you can see that they are fucking losers a lot of the time. Look at the idiots on fans rule section of War at the warfield. They are idiots and the bands are no better a lot of the time, most metallers that i know(and they generally have a better knowledge of the music than the americans) would have nothing in common with the American fans.

I've never been in the Wall of Death, but from the LOG video.. from what I can tell.. the WOD happens and lasts for about 5mins maybe less.. so.. Of course more people get hurt moshing than doing the wall of death..but maybe the rate of people getting hurt in that 5mins compared to that hour and a half 2 hours is significantly larger ( so for 2 people to get hurt in 5mins.. acting on this "slam dance" and for 2 other people to get hurt total in the rest of the 2 hours.. yadda..you do the math.. basically.. the WOD hurts people faster and maybe the indjuries sustained are worst).. But seeing as ( if buddy is correct) the first record of this dance is 98..then there would be no proven data about the WOD..bah whatever..
The Wall of Death seriously looks like fun.. and people who call it stupid or say it looks stupid.. shut your fucking mouth..Cause that's what you would say to the person who says head banging music is stupid.. You're just to pussy to step into a fucking pit..
I don't mosh as much as I use to.. but this I gotta fucking try .... I am surprised I haven't seen it. or maybe I have.. I've seen Hatebreed and LOG like 4 times each in the last 5 or so years.. Meh.. Hatebreed= Good Live Hatebreed = Boring Albums..sorry..but it all sounds the same..
Go see Hatebreed live..but when it comes to CD save your money for anything Devin Townsen touches!!

this WOD thingy seems intruiging, but I'm still unsure about whether it's actually 'stupid' (or at least as much as some people make out) as opposed to say...circle pits, your average mosh pit, or even head-banging...Of course they're all dangerous to some extent or other(and everyone's seemingly aware of that), but they're all a good release - an artistic expression of sorts, is that really as bad as people say?

It's sad that this German metal person has died at the event, the wall of death is "GREAT" to those that did't lose a tooth, break a bone, U know what i'm saying? - It will come around to them too if they dare.. Moshing is the same, I love it, WE ALL LOVE IT, but within reason..Ever seen those big skin head fuckers kicking das boots at gigs when your 16 with long hair? I did and it wasn't funny, i'm saying everyone has comfort and discomfort
I agree with anyone that's interested in first the saftey of their respected family, friends they are at the gig with - then the music. unfortuantely my body is no longer able for moshing but I look on with fondness. I like to chill out, take pictures, try and meet the band for a chat or foto.
The metal WORLD need to stick together...

probably around 20 times, and never had any trouble. Of course that doesn't mean it isn't dangerous. But it's like other extreme things you do to get a kick, it has a risk element to it. If you don't want to risk it, leave the pit and come back afterwards.

...about where the 'wall of death' originated. It started back in '84 with the metal god of gods, Bret Michaels. I know because I was at the show, and Poison were just fuckin' shredding...just fuckin' shredding. He says to the crowd, "all right, split the fuckin' crowd right down the middle and when I say 'go' all you motherfuckers run as fast and and hard as you can and just fuckin' collide with one another." So we did, and it was just like a wall of death (hence its name). We drank a lot of beer that night, and many nights, too. Also, it was cool to see all those fuckin' metal heads head bang with their long hair and stuff. So there you have it posers. And that my metal-headed friends was the beggining of my passion for death-metal and the shows thereof.
Rock-on Ricky Rachman, a true metal giant. He'a all inked-up too. (if you're not familiar with that expression, it means he has a lot of cool tattoos).

Since you asked. The pit was totally different from today. At hardcore shows, people would dance - see the Sick of It All "Underground" video for many of the moves. If someone went down, the pit would stop and people would pick the guy back up. People stage dove, but ALWAYS head first, not boots first. I was about 5 foot 5 and scrawny and I NEVER got hurt - and this was at some shows that drew tough looking crowds. I remember seeing shows like Cro-Mags, Necrophegia, and even Hatebreed before they broke and there was always a "controlled" aspect to pit. Everyone kept their arms at their sides and their heads down. Then MTV picked up on it and everyone was suddenly a tough guy. The pit was never about violence. It was about a positive physical release. At the metal shows, it was slightly different, but none of this Wall of Death shit.
IN NYC (where I grew up) the pit was a positive thing. It was always in control. If there were fights, they were taken outside, or the band would stop playing. If you had your arms up in the pit, you got taken out. If you were hurting people, you got taken out. There were rules that almost everyone was expected to follow.
This Wall of Death stupidity is all about violence and hurting people. Lamb of God obviously used the Wall of Death to promote themselves, because they're music is not enough to do it by itself. Lamb of God do not what the pit is all about. Lamb of God is a blackmark on today's metal. We'd all be better off they disbanded and working in the 7-11 like they were destined to do. It's unfortunate MTV picked up on their worthless act.
