Police File 116 Charges Against SOUNDS OF THE UNDERGROUND Concert-Goers

According to the Winston-Salem Journal, an undercover police operation at the Sounds of the Underground concert Thursday (June 30) outside the Joel Coliseum Annex led to charges against 60 people, Winston-Salem police said yesterday.
Most of the charges were for drug possession.
Officers and agents from Forsyth Municipal ABC Law Enforcement issued 116 charges. Most were misdemeanors. Police Capt. David Clayton said that police cited or arrested people for possession of marijuana, cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, Xanax and Ritalin, he said.
The Sounds of the Underground concert featured more than 20 bands, including LAMB OF GOD, CLUTCH, OPETH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and DEVILDRIVER.
Staff at the Joel Coliseum asked police for the undercover operation, Clayton said. "Most of the folks that we dealt with were from out of town and, in fact, out of state," he said.

Some drugs are an easy way to open your mind up psychically. It only makes sense that they would be illegal, simply because there are people out there that don't want you to know who you are. They don't want you to achieve that.
But of course, you don't need drugs to achieve that state. And obviously many drugs are very harmful.

Pigs bust people for misdemeanor drug offenses because it's safe for the pigs-and because regular, working class people who have regular jobs will pump money into the legal system to clear their names.
Meanwhile, the real drug dealers and professional criminals go largely ignored.
It's a lot easier and safer to bust "regular joes" for a couple of joints or pills than it is to move in on a known crackhouse -where the dealers are armed and have no problem knocking off a pig or two.
Think about it-instead of striking at the root, and actually putting drug dealers away, they prefer to nip at the branches, and create revenue.

Absolutely 100% correct. You hit it. It's all about revenue. Odd that it is perfectly legal (and through the media encouraged) to drink alcohol, yet other drugs like marijuana are illegal.
If the test for what drugs should be legal is how harmful they are, don't we have it backwards? How many deaths are "alcohol-related"? How many deaths are "pot-related"?
I'm not advocating prohibition of any sort (it obviously doesn't work) , I just want the general public to see the blatant hypocracy inherent in our drug laws.

The cops should have been looking for weapons, not drugs. They should have put their money into metal detectors so that people stop getting stabbed and shot at shows. I don't hear about people constantly dieing lately from drug overdoses and metal shows, I hear about morons going nuts and killing someone with a weapon they got past some half fast security fucks.
Thanks to this, I have made up my decision between SOTU and Ozzfest, and I choose Ozzfest.

I was at this show and saw no one being written up. I did however see a few people who looked rather out of place there (perhaps the undercovers). I did smell the occasional weed, but with all the shit that has happned in metal with shootings, stabbings, bands getting jumped on stage I think it's a good thing to have extra police there. I'm there to have a good time not worrying about hearing the last note of my life.

The venue makes their money by renting the space to the promoter who puts on the show. The promoter pays the bands a specified fee, plus probably a percentage of the gate. After the promoter covers the expenses of venue rental, insurance, performance fees, advertising, etc. , he gets to keep the rest.
The venue has already made it's money before the bands even show up.
The bands have already been paid their guarantee (or at least half of it) before they unpack their guitars.
The promoter is the one who gets stiffed when the show doesn't happen or attendance is off.
It sounds to me like maybe the owners of the venue are either some kind of religious people, or maybe just paranoid? Perhaps they have a beef with the promoter and set up the sting as a way to "screw" him?
Either way, who really gets the short end of the stick is the fans, and ultimately, the genre, because if this happens enough, people will surely stop attending concerts. What happens if the pigs decide to don their riot gear at the next show you go to? if you EVER see pigs in riot gear, beware: it means they have a riot planned for you. Even if you don't feel like rioting.

I understand where the venue makes its money and all but understand that it all starts with the people who attend. If the people there knew they could easilly do something a cop wouldnt like then they wouldnt go.
A promoter obviously depends on the fans, and if the venue decides to do something bad for the fans, then obviously the promoter will stop holding shows at that particular venue. Other bands and festivals and other events could follow.

marijuana would be the biggest mistake since cigarettes. marijuana is more harmful than cigs, and if legalized the price would go way down, because it would be easier to get, easier to buy everything, it will most definitely become the next cigarette, but worse. as for the it's my choice, yeah it is if you do it by yourself away from everyone else, but it is my choice not do that shit and you're blowing it my way. same thing with cigs, i hate NH shows, because most venues allow smoking, Mass doesnt. drinking is your own choice, and same with other drugs that doesnt that arent smoked, as long as you dont get behind the wheel. it wouldnt be the dead person's choice for you to drink and drive and kill that person.

Everytime I go to a show there are some fucking drug heads in the crowd on the floor and in the stands, acting like fuckin retards, fuckin up the show for everyone.. People have no fuckin respect for other people anymore...Thats why I love when people beat them the fuck down!!! FUCK DRUG HEADS!!

The pigs should have started off their ambush backstage and then the real rioting would have begun once the bands got hauled off to jail!!
They only did this to the paying customers because it was safe for them and an easy way to add to their monthly quota for summons issuing!!!
I go to at least 2 shows every month, and have been doing so for years. I already know the venues in my area that make things difficult for the pothead and the ones that let you watch the show in relative comfort from narcs so I am always prepared.
My point is this, most tokers are there to smoke and enjoy the show, not to ruin another concertgoers fun.
Those of you who think this is the case must be on numerous other things as well as smoking blunts--not that there is anything wrong with that as long as you aren't causing a problem for others.
