SAMMY HAGAR: I Was Ready To Go To Blows With EDDIE VAN HALEN
- July 6, 2005
|
|
Norway's Metal Express recently conducted an interview with Sammy Hagar. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow: On the VAN HALEN 2004 reunion tour and whether there was a chance of it coming to Europe: "The tour was worthwhile for everyone, but it was a really expensive ticket price in America, and I think that if we would have come to Europe, it would have been twice that much. And I wasn't down with that. And we signed on a contract… which sounds kind of business-like, but it really became that. By the end of the tour, if it wasn't for the business, I probably would have stopped at 40 shows. But we signed on for 80, we did 80 shows, and at the end of that, I think it was better to let that go for awhile. I'm not saying that we would never do it again, but some people would have to change, including maybe myself — maybe I'm the first guy that should change. But we would have to change. We couldn't just do it the way it was being done. It was falling apart." On the possibility of a new VAN HALEN album: "We tried to do an album. We only got three songs done. It took four months to do three songs. So I was saying, 'Let's go out and play for the people before this whole thing ends.' 'Cause if you remember right, they tried to do an album with Gary Cherone — the second record — and that didn't finish. Then they tried to do a record with Dave [ Lee Roth] three times, and they never got it done. So I was seeing that coming. As a person who wanted to go out and play for the people, I said, 'Let's stop recording, and let's go out on the road while we still can.' And I think it was a smart move. The management was into that as well. We had shows on sale. We pretty much had to go out and do some shows. That's why we only did three songs." On the last show of the VAN HALEN reunion tour: "The last show with VAN HALEN was a disaster — it was a horrible experience. We had to be pushed off the stage separately, and me taking this way, and Eddie [ Van Halen] taking this way, and Alex [ Van Halen] and Michael [ Anthony] down the middle, because we were ready to go to blows — it was that bad. So that was horrible. The rest of the tour wasn't that bad. But at the end… I don't know. Something got crazy." Listen to Sammy Hagar's four-minute interview with Metal Express at this location (Windows Media).

sinks Sammy comes and rags on the band. Of all the greedys on this tour I'd bet Sammy was the one who wanted to do it for the money the most. You can tell by the way he tries to sell everything but the kitchen sink. Sammy shut up and step off and clear the way for the real Van Halen and that is the return of Diamond Dave. As old as he is which is really not that old for they have given the fans a shit load of good music from way backk in the 70's, they can still raise some Hell. You know who is old and looks it the reunited Pink Floyd man do they look like keepers of the Crypt. Sammy 5150 smoked and some additional tunes here and there but the real VH is and always be Dave and Ed , Alex and Michael A.

Sammy rules and dave drools! anybody that still thinks they would sound better with roth obviosly did not listen to the songs they did on the first hits package or in complete denial. the Sammy song humans beings totaly smokes the roth tracks which except for the music by eddie of coarse totaly sucked! stupid lyrics as usual and to say the vocals were weak is being kind. even the 3 songs they did with Sammy on the new hits smoked those songs and if you don't agree then like dave you are living in the past, hey guys it's not 1984 anymore so move on. yes the roth years were great but so were the Sammy years and there is no comparison between the 2 today, roth may be more of an entertainer but Sammy can do both sing and entertain and much better. I hope they never get back with roth because after the initial buzz it will just spoil the memories of when they were great and just end up sad and pathetic like roth's carrer now

congratulations on consistently having the dumbest posts ever on this website. Hagar a better showman than Roth? Stop it, just fucking stop it. Put down whatever it is you're shooting, dropping, snorting or sucking, back away and go take a long nap. The 3 new songs on that hits collection were awful. They were played on the radio for about a month and then you never heard them again.

Somebody needs to kick Eddie's ass to get back into writing/playing music. If he's done, just say "Hey, I'm done", not do these BS tours with no new album out. The songs off the VH: best of both worlds CD sucked very badly. Sammy's trying, but unless Eddie get's it together, VH is done.
Don't even talk about DLR. That dude is so washed up, he doesn't even figure into ANY VH equation since oh...1984.

I've seen Sammy live long before he was in VH. I've seen VH several times with DLR and a couple times with Sam. I've also seen DLR a couple times.
The best, DLR's first tour with Steve Via, Billy Shehan, & Greg Bissonette. 2nd-VH Women & Children First tour
3rd- Sammy Hagar-Standing Hampton/VOA tours. Honestly, he put on some of the most energetic shows for his time.
Now you can all slay me but I've seen Van Halen many times with David and he was just stupid every friggin show. 1984 was good but I saw them at the US Festival and it has stuck with me how horrible they were. It was a battle of sucked more Dave or Ed.

so the songs were played for a month, well that's a month more than the awful tracks roth did with them.you may consider walking arounds carrying a jack bottle full ice tea and babbling non stop for a half hr. entertainment but even back then i was like shut up and sing another song already.face it nothing he has done since he left the band comes close to anything Sammy has done with them or Sammy's solo stuff. not even close ok so he had a couple funny videos when was the last time you heard a solo song by him on the radio? face it he needs the band more than they need him. at least Sammy never did a vegas lounge act or hired escorts to be pictured with like your old pathetic has been roth.

son of a bitch... we're never going to get to hear any new shit from them. they are seriously the worst band to be a huge fan of. I wouldn't care who the hell was their singer. I saw them on this last tour, and Sammy was fucking awesome. I love DLR too, but I have to agree with whoever said that Sammy would be the best for now, because Dave just really can't pull it off anymore. Sam stil has his voice, he's still sober enough, and he can still run all over the stage. He's pretty consistent vocally, and he remembers the damn lyrics. Dave is the original VH, but I think at this point, it would just be a nostalgia act. Ofcourse, on the plus side of having Dave back, there would be a lot more of the old stuff being played. That would be tight. I don't know. Bring back ANYONE at this point. I would even take another Gary record...

is everybody so concerned with hair when it has absolutely nothing to do with making music. You fucking Nancy boys that are worried about Dave's hair need to go suck a cock and quit worrying about another man's fucking hair. With or without hair DLR is a showman extreme. If it is hair you are worried about go watch a fucking soap opera with you suck buddies and leave Dave out of it. Half of the Metal acts out there that are over 10 years old have more hairpieces than a fucking rest home anyway. Jesus!!!

I saw VH last year when they got back together with Sammy and face it, all 4 of them sucked. Actually that's not fair, Eddie and Sammy sucked. I can't respect a guy who dresses up in canary yellow capris and dances like he's got a hemorrhoid on fire up his ass. I also saw the Sam and Dave tour and Dave blew him off the stage. Yeah, Dave walking around with a bottle of Jack Daniels is his thing. Think of how many people friggin' copied it. Sammy also took the time during his set to slag Dave after his set. That's pretty low class considering Dave didn't slag him during his set and now couldn't retaliate. But to his credit, in a VH1 special Dave had the all time classic line about Sammy during the tour "every night Sammy comes up to my bus and knocks on my door, dick in one hand and a bottle of tequila in the other begging to come inside."

I myself am a pro full time guitarist in a Texas band.I cut my teeth on Eddie when it comes to rock guitar.Hes a trendsetter,a rare gem among an ocean of wankers. To suggest that his personal life diminishes,or overshadows his accomplishments as rewriting the book on the approach to guitar is both shortsighted and narrowminded.were all human, and prone to ups and downs. Eddie changed everything-and that cant be taken from him.the soap opera of Sammy and DLR is just that-a soap opera. give him due credit-there will never be another Eddie Tim in Texas

So we actually got some decent music on the radio for a month. Sadly, this music was convolutedly amix the swill of shit and other fucked up mired music of this decade. At least when they put those songs on, I'm thinking to myself: "At least it's not Eminem" or some shit like that.

Need proof? How about 3 singers? Whether you like Dave, Sam, or that other guy who was there for about 5 minutes, it's obvious Eddie has some serious social/relatability issues. What they should have done after the first Sammy split was just become a three piece instrumental band. You know Ed, Alex and Mike get along. Just think of the jams they could crank out. Who knows...Ed might start regaining some of his prominence in the guitar world, instead of being voted "Biggest Disappointment". When was the last time he played a memorable riff? Instead of coming up with a load of pussy-assed, radio friendly crap, get down to jammin'! In fact, all they would have to do is release a bunch of live recordings from the Dave and Sammy eras and they could retire with more money than could ever imagine and go out with some dignity, instead of this bitch slappin' in the press. It really is a shame to see how this once mighty force in rock and roll has deteriorated into a bunch of boo-hooing crybabys. Bring back some great memories, PLEASE. Release the live shit. My wallet is open...

What kind of VH fan are you??
