CINDERELLA Drummer Says KURT COBAIN Should Have Donated All His Money To Cancer Research

In a recent interview with Newdealers.com, CINDERELLA drummer Fred Coury spoke about how his band — one of the biggest rock acts of the late '80s — was seemingly sidelined by the grunge explosion of the early '90s. "I'll tell you about the Kurt Cobain [ NIRVANA] thing, he knew what he was doing," Coury said. "I mean, if you don't want the fame, don't go on tour, don't go on MTV, and if you don't want the money, there are plenty of kids out there with cancer that do need it. I mean, to blow your brains out in your 10,000-square-foot mansion is ridiculous. He should have been in a small, one-bedroom apartment and should have given all his money to cancer research. So I don't buy any of it — I don't buy any of that crap. It's a total farce that they didn't want the fame." CINDERELLA are currently touring the U.S as part of the Rock Never Stops 2005 tour, also featuring RATT, QUIET RIOT and FIREHOUSE.

I saw Cinderella in 1988, and they were off unfortunately, way off. Opening bands were Tangier and White Lion. White Lion blew Cinderella. I know it sounds weird but that was how it was. WL were jumping all over the place and made us want more. THAT's what rock is all about, so for then to see Cinderella's frontman coming down from the ceiling on a white piano...suffice to say it got boring. I have trashed tonight I admit but I am in a weird mood. I never do this and actually I really liked Cinderella's 3rd album, the station one. They were not a hair band to me, they were more like Tesla, also not a hair band. They have a horrible name, and were probably told to do this and that due to "market research but alas, too bad. Nice how someone mentions Kurt Cobain's death and a shitload of folks write here. If it was "Cinderella Drummer Wins Tour De France" no one would care. Too bad indeed. "Coming home" was a GREAT tune but should have been on Coyote Ugly's soundtrack, a chick flick.

I wondered myself why Fred would say this now until I read the whole article. The interviewer ask him about the rise and fall of the era he was most successfull in and what happened to ruin it for a small period. Sure Cinderella probably don't get many new young fans but no matter what you say about them they are all alive and well and still pleasing their fans while Kurt is well......

Kurt may have not been a musical genius as all of us know there were way more revolutionary bands. However there certainly was tremendous talent.
I think the point there were 80's bands out there who were just as talented but they have since been blackballed by everyone not being able to see past the hair and makeup.
Cinderella (lame name) is/was a great live band, much, much better than the credit the musical press will ever give them. But then again being fans of Metal/hard rock (either Messugah, Megadeth, or hair bands) we should be used to that.
Fuck the trend hopping, musical press..........come to blabbermouth and waste your time BSing about the bands you love the bands you hate and the bands you just want to kill.

Cobain didn't mind fame, but I don't think he wanted that big fame that found Nirvana. Hell, they even tried to put out non commercial music (Incesticide, half of In Uetero) & the public still bought it up. I still think he was murdered, the suicide note doesn't sound like the interviews you read, different tone & themes. So Mr. Coury needs to not get so tied up in the "suicide" thing, instead of being jealous that Nirvana took the younger crowd & the audience for hair metal was getting older & not buying as much music. I am sick of hearing how Nirvana killed hair bands, the audience just grew up & kids buy more music then adults (Look at how boy bands killed grunge!)

I'm not a big fan of Nirvana or Cinderella (can't fucking believe those two bands can be in the same sentence), so maybe I can offer an unbiased opinion. Unlike the "I'm cool and your not" people around here. Anyway, believe it or not, some people make music to have fun and to enjoy it... not to get uber-rich and turn rockstar. The songs and production came together at the right time and the right place for the right reasons when Nevermind came around. People were sick and fucking tired of the bloated, sinking ship that was "hairmetalpop". Just like PUNK came around and challenged arena rock of the 70's, this NEW PUNK came around and shook the status quo all over again that rock music is just a hell of a lot better when it's in the gutter where it belongs... and not glitzy and polished and spoonfed. Nirvana did not intentionally become the posterboys for this thing - they were the unwilling medium that took hold... again, the right sound and the right time. The people loved the honesty of it all, and they bought the record. And they bought more. And more. And more... and hell, the band got rich! Easy as that. They didn't ask for the fame, but fame can be a DRUG just like heroin. You could just tell Kurt was uncomfortable with it, but maybe that's where te heavy duty drugs came in. Perhaps he numbed himself because he got the fame he NEVER wanted. Funny though, as the pendulum swings the other way (as it always does), the very bands that break the status quo eventually become the status quo. And that's the vicious cycle Nirvana got caught up in... hence the bullet to the brain. Did he learn to enjoy the fame? Yep, just like addicts learn to enjoy the dope. When you get used to it, you just can't live without it.
Now on to Fred Coury. How many Cinderella albums were you credited to that you never even played on? Just asking.

To compare Cinderella to Nirvana is laughable. Cinderella is/was an average Rock Band that got lumped into with all the other Hair Bands. Why, Because they wore Make Up, LipStick, and made kissy faces in Photos. Nirvana revolutionized rock. They made the guys in Cinderella look in the mirror and say, Why the Hell are we dressed like Women? I know that pisses off you Poision, Warrant, Trixter fans but it can't stay 1988 forever. And some shmuck said he'd put Cinderellas best 10 songs against Nirvana? I'd take Nirvana's "Nevermind" Against, Cinderella's Greatest Hits any day. Nirvana is Nodody's Fool you Hair Band weenies.

that Cobain was comletely up on what was going on in terms of the business and did all the things that anyone who wanted their band to be succesfull would do. He also said the Courtney Love is in fact the gash that we have been led to believe that she is - in fact, even worse.
On another note, I think Fred is probably right.
On another note, I saw this tour and I think Cinderealla looked tired and lazy. Tom Keifer REALLY wants to be Steven Tyler and looks like a jerk off trying to do so.

Great show in Orlando last night. Tom Keefer is one of the best live singers ever. 100% power and soul. Dude plays 5 different instruments like a pro and put's on a show that left everyone speechless. Kick-ass!

I don't care about their name, I know it's a stupid one but it doesn't matter. I don't care about their hair too. Cinderella, at least, played raunchy and fun rock and roll, and invited people at their shows to have a great time. It is all that matters with rock and roll, as far as I'm concerned. I understand why hair metallers are frustrated about grunge. Nirvana was playing depressed rock and roll, with a depressed frontman who wanted to stay underground and should have stayed. They took over rock mainstream and led a complete generation to be depressed as they were. Except for the kids who kept listening to Def Leppard.
And give a little listen to the new Cinderella best-of album, Rocked Wired And Bluesed, and you will hear a band of rockers that played with their guts, had fun, and had a far more rockier edge than all the other hair-metal bands. They're one good old-time rock and roll band. If you miss Nirvana after that, then you're a fucking depressed loser.

Cleaning house for suck MTV bands that were formula, glam, shit for talent especially Poison, and right up there was Cinderella. Unfortunately Tesla and a lot of other good bands lumped in also went down. I believe Kurt, Kris and Dave were 20 times more talented than Freddie, Tommie and (choke) Eric Brittingham?? Such disgusting posers... they made me sick.
As far as a good cause for charity... how about National Institute for Mentally Ill.... his widow certainly has issues, Kurt was a tortured soul, and mental illness is far undertreated by HMOs. There are many throw-away people lost and treated like shit because of ignorance. At least Kurt had a lot to say.

Eh, I think I'll summarize
Nirvana's greatest accomplishment to music was in bringing an end to Micheal Jackson's dominance of the charts. Not in bringing an end to glam metal which even its biggest names admitted was on the decline anyway. Kurt Cobain was at the right place at the right time for that one and even then he couldn't stave off Madonna and Mariah Carey.
Getting back to glam metal's reign on MuchMusic/MTV and how we metalheads were supposed to be reviled at it....for fuck's sake get over it, it was almost 20 years ago and those programs like "Cribs" and "Real World" are way worse than having to watch Poison and White Lion videos constantly.
Mywar138's clearly never heard of "American Hair Band" by Tuff which not only spoofs both glam and grunge but also Kid Rock's "American Bad Ass" a.k.a. a song that really had it coming for sampling Metallica's "Sad But True".
Probot was metal. And better than the Foo Fighters. Deal with it.
And on an unrelated note, the Madrid attacks were a little over a year ago unless Kull's found a way to travel forward in time. The news about the London attacks is tragic regardless. RIP to all those killed or maimed in the explosions.

To compare these two bands musicaly is just plain stupid. Lucky for us that it's only the idiots in the post doing it not Fred Courey or the Rock media. Everyone gets off the subjuct for some fucking reason.
I think Courey makes a good point. They could have stayed on SubPop and made music for the people they wanted to. Made enough money to live off of and been just fine. Nobody put a gun to Kurts head except for Kurt. He didn't have to sign to a major label like Geffen. Fugazi is happy right where they are at setting thier own ticket prices and keeping their real fans happy.
So I say good for you Fred, your not comparing your band to thier band just stating the obvious.

nobody saw it coming, and nobody planned it, nobody can blame Kurt for it, totally the opposite. They became big, at least in part because people were sick of the overblown pepsi commercials for videos, and the music (like Cinderella) was about as deep as spilled pepsi on a bleacher seat in a "rock never stops" concert. Kurt/Nirvana got big by default. To hate him or resent him for it, and feel entiitled to the money it brought him is greedy, shallow, and disgusting. Pretty much why I am glad Cinderella/Poison et al, who were ruining (IMHO) the name of metal died off.
