STRAPPING YOUNG LAD: BYRON STROUD Temporarily Replaced By DEVILDRIVER Bassist
- July 7, 2005
|
|
|
STRAPPING YOUNG LAD have sent out the following update in their official newsletter:
"A bit of a glitch resulted in the booking of a STRAPPING YOUNG LAD tour simultaneous to a FEAR FACTORY tour [FEAR FACTORY and STRAPPING YOUNG LAD share bassist Byron Stroud — Ed.]. Therefore, some emergency measures had to be taken. After July 14 there will be a substitute bass player — Jon Miller from the band DEVILDRIVER. This knowledge was a quite sudden and there has been very little time for preparation. They will have to rehearse on the road before having to go live with material completely new to him. It is a lot of pressure. For this reason two headlining dates [July 24 at Domino Room in Bend, OR and August 1 at Lo-Fi Café in Salt Lake City, UT] will be cancelled."
STRAPPING YOUNG LAD are currently touring North America as part of the Sounds of the Underground tour (also featuring LAMB OF GOD, OPETH, CHIMAIRA and CLUTCH, among many others). The band are continuing to support their latest album, "Alien", which was released in late March via Century Media Records.

The Devin nerds won't like this one bit That'd be like Opeth getting a metalcore bassist...people need to relax, metal should be a community, not a fucking "I'm cooler than you attitude"...oh well all those people stop listening to metal anyway once they hit their mid-twenties (or sooner)

SYL is just a fun band to listen to. It's not amazing or anything, but when you listen to an album straight throughit usually ends up being pretty fun and catchy. His voice is pretty cool too at times.

That answers the question that Byron didn't answer when I asked him last friday. This kinda sucks, cause I was kinda hoping that Byron would stay in SYL and Fear Factory would get a regular bassist, as it stands right now it's gonna kill the chemistry in the band and bring down any growth they are trying to make.

I was wondering what would happen as well. it's great to hear that Fear Factory won't have to suffer because of this. SYL is a great band but Fear Factory just crushes everything in their path. I'm looking forward to what is simply going to be the best album of the year and can't I wait to hear the songs live!

since SYL is already on tour, and fear factory hasn't started the gigantour yet, why can't fear factory find a suitable replacement? Seems to make more sense than disrupting SYL's tour like that. But, no matter, I'm sure it will still work out one way or another

SYL and FF are good friends, so I'm sure this conflict was worked out with no bad feelings. Good luck to the temp.

Listen bedwetter, I am one of the "Devy nerds" (and why not, he's one of the most talented musicians of the "scene") and I'm into metal for 20+ years, I have forgotten more about bands than you'll ever know and it's all about creatvity and therefore I listen to a much bigger variety of music than you'll ever do . If someone with a screenname like yours (I'm quite sure you are a young twat that discovered In Flames way past their prime) tries to picture Devin Townsend connoisseurs as closeminded dumbfucks, the joke's clearly on you.
As for SYL and FF, there are strong connections between the bands, but I have to agree with SpiralGenerator and golgoth. Byron Stroud is an integral part of SYL, music- and business-wise. Get your shit together FF and get a real job, umm..., your own bassplayer.

I wish the best of luck to the guy who'll have to learn all the shit of SYL on the road.
SYL kicks everybody's ass and Devil Driver is getting better with each record.

they should have known this was going to happen, like someone said both these tours have been announced for a while.
i definitly have a new level of respect for the Devildriver guy being able to do that so SYL doesn't cancel their SOTU dates too.

I hope SYL and FF geet round to touring together... It would be cool and they'd have no problems with Byron... But I'd suppose he'd get a bit tired after playing for so long.

After the show at Ten Bells in Grand Rapids. Great fucking performance. Best show I have seen since Superjoint Ritual back in April '04. These guys know how to play metal. It's too bad that the owner of the club had to put on a bunch of hardcore bands on that no one gave two shits about before hand. Fuck hardcore, it's dying.

Since I already saw SYL with Byron on this tour... I guess this can only mean good news for me. Now I get to see Byron with Fear Factory in a little over a month.
Actually, I asked Byron this at Metalfest back in april... he just responded by saying "It will all work out... don't worry." It worked out for me just fine...so he was right.

But if he can get the job done right. Doesn't really mean two shits to me, though. I'm seeing Gigantour and definitley not seeing Sounds of the Underground.

...Byron doesn't do the recording. The bass duties (tracking wise) is handled by C.O.W., Byron is merely a touring bassist for FF. And why not leave the SOTU tour, which is playing to smaller crowds, with smaller set times to go on a premier tour with FF, where he will get to play to bigger crowds and longer set times? And the new FF kicks ass, it hasn't been out of my CD player since I got it a few days ago.

It's so funny that everyone argues aboot shit like this, I've known these guys for years and if they were to see some of these posts they would laugh their tits off! The SYL guys are brothers man, so what that Byron had to miss a few shows, I saw two of the shows that Jon did and they were killer. Byron is the fucking man and works his motherfucking ass off to rock for all you crazy fucks so just calm down, bow down, and buy a fucking t-shirt at BOTH shows............

Seventh Wave hit it on the head.
Just saw SYL at the SOTU show here in Vancouver the other day and Miller did a fine job. Devin was in top form and made some hilarious cracks about Byron not being on Slimfast but bein in LA filming gay porn or doin an enuffzenuff reunion tour lmao. He also told people to go buy t-shirts multiple times.
I was surprised that Byron wasn't there cuz I haven't been following all this stuff but glad I'll get to see him at Gigantour with FF. I remember Byron bein in a local band called Caustic Thought way way back and even then we could tell he was a monster bassist ahead of the pack.
