DAVE GROHL Hits Out At LINKIN PARK, MÖTLEY CRÜE For Using 'Backing Tracks' In Concert
- July 8, 2005
|
|
|
According to ContactMusic.com, FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl has derided bands, including LINKIN PARK and MÖTLEY CRÜE, for using backing tracks when they perform live.
Grohl would rather his band sounded terrible than employ pre-recorded material as a "crutch" to mask poor musicianship.
He explains, "We don't try to play perfect, like on the record. We don't use backing tracks. That's kind of a crutch other bands have up their sleeve.
"I'd rather sound awful and have the chance to change things at a whim than sound like LINKIN PARK or MÖTLEY CRÜE because of today's technology.
"They feel naked when it comes to playing live."

It's true though...why go play a live show that sounds exactly like the CD with the exact same timing? Live shows are great because they have that live energy and because it's a new spin on material you've listened to over and over. I love it when a band plays a song slower or faster live. It just makes it sound that much better to my ears.
Regardless of who said it and who he's pointing fingers at, he speaks the truth.

WEll, I think Grhol is wrong on this. Between the Metallica and Ozzfest shows, I've seen Linkin Park a few times (not willingly i might add), and I have to say that I really don't think they use backing tracks. That one singer is way to off key. I mean it was horrible, and I doubt they would pre-record him singing completely off key.

Talk shit about Grohl all you want, but the man has hit the nail in the head. Playing live is all about the energy of the moment, relying on backing tracks is sooo gay, regardless of what bands he used as an example.
If I want to hear the songs exactly how they sound on the album, I'd rather stay at home and spin the cd.
Play it, don't fake it.

I'm a Huge MÖTLEY CRÜE fan.
But, Go on AOL.com and watch the clips of the MÖTLEY CRÜE performance from Live 8 in Toronto. Listen to Vince's vocals.
He sounded HORRIBLE and I was embarassed for Him!!!
So, They obviously weren't using pre-Recorded tracks.
I saw MÖTLEY CRÜE at Madison Square Garden in March and They sounded awesome. If they were using any pre-Recorded tracks. I DON'T CARE!!!! I had a great time at the show, Regardless. I have tickets to see them in August at PNC Bank Arts center.

I like Grohl but Crue and LP are different than his projects. Those bands, especially Crue, use the backing trax on BACKGROUND vocals. Thats not cheating. Listen to Girls,Girls,Girls live and you can hear the recorded singing during the chorus....why am I wasting my time with this...It sounds good and its not like they're freakin Milli Vanilli or some shit..geez Dave, let the music do the talking please and shut your pie hole.

Yes!!!
So, bands like Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson and all of the NU-Metal bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Deftones and the whole Hip-Hop scene all have pretty much their whole entire show pre-Recorded.
I wonder if Dave Grohl would publicly criticize His buddy Trent Reznor for using pre-Recorded tracks during the NIN shows????
I doubt it!!
But, Who Cares???
I just want to go to a show and have a good time. I don't really care what they're doing behind the scenes. Dave Grohl has performed on Saturday Night Live and just about every Late Night talk show. Is He going to try to say He played totally "Live" every single time and Never used any pre-Recorded backing tracks???
If He says He Never used any pre-Recorded tracks in any of his many tv appearances over His career. Then He's a flat out LIAR. Because, Alot of tv shows will only let the music guest play to a tape. So, It sounds good on tv. They won't let the band play "Live".

Oh Yeah, I forgot to mention that almost all of the Awards shows also force the musical performers to use pre-Recorded tracks. Dave Grohl has played on just about every Awards show with NIRVANA and FOO FIGHTERS like the Mtv Music Awards, Mtv Movie Awards, The Grammys, The American Music Awards and a whole ton of others all over the world.
He used pre-Recored tracks in ALL of these shows.

"WHO FUCKIN' CARES ABOUT THIS??????????????"
A lot of people, obviously. I'm one of them. I don't like bullshit and disingenuity. Bands that use backing tracks are trying to fool people. Fuck that. That's completely against what music, especially rock and metal music, is about.
I don't consider industrial/techno bands the same way because I think of "triggering an effect" as different than a "backing track", and mixer effects can be changed on the spot. Technically anything played on an electronic keyboard or electronic-anything is a sample. Use of samples doesn't constitute the "we can't play our own songs so we'll just stand there and pretend to play" bullshit element of a "backing track". Samples are used to create a certain sound that would otherwise be impossible. Backing tracks are.... well.... the same thing apparently seeing as none of the bands are actually able to play their own music.

A disease that has threaten to take his life several times, a disease that fuses his bones together and brings him pain, i'd like to see your fuckin pathetic ass deal with the pain that poor mick has to go thru every damn day. And Mick Mars is an inspiration to the music business, he has a very hard obsticle such as his disease(ankylosing spondylitis) and he doesnt let it get in the way of doing what he loves and does best and that is play guitar for those fans he loves dearly.

I don't mind backing tracks if they're not used as a crutch to cover up shitty playing. Rush uses backing tracks all the time, but usually just for parts where there's keyboards and bass at the same time...Geddy can't do both at once. That's what they get for their 80's overproduced albums, but it sounds great, especially live.
For the person who said Dream Theater uses backing tracks, I don't think they do. Anything that sounds like it is probably something the keyboardist is doing.

I think alot of people are confusing using "Backing Tracks" with "Lyp-Synching" and not playing live.
There is a Huge difference.
Bands use "Backing" Tracks for the "BACKGROUND" Vocals and Harmonies and maybe some different guitar layers or different sound effects that they record in the studio. That You hear in the BACKGROUND.
Just because a band might be using "Backing" tracks doesn't mean They're Not singing and playing there instruments.
Some stuff just can't be duplicated live.
The band is still performing Live, They just have the Background shit on tape and I don't find anything wrong With it.

nine inch nails don't seem to use too many backing tracks if any at all watch their last live dvd their are no less than 2 people playing keyboards at any given time and sometimes there are 3 when the other is not playing guitar. There drummer also uses some electronic pads (like tool) which have their own sounds but are not looped and must still be played. Sure some of the keyboard parts are programmed so it may not take many keys to play but its being played and not a tape. All of the bashers are making up shit they know nothing about to defend their point I have also seen Manson a few times and no where did he use any backing tracks except for a background female vocal here and there... As for Dream Theater watch a fucking show and tell me where they use backing tracks? Hell even on their Scenes From A Memory tour they had a real guy playing the shrink and real female singers on the parts they did on the album. Do some research folks! As for the Crue total back up tracks on vocals and background vocals. I wouldn't doubt it Mick Mars has a background tape too. Linkin Park I have had the unfortunate chance to see live and they seemed to not use any back up tracks other than what their dj does and some background vocals.

when grohl had the probot project going on he had a show in l.a. at either the whiskey or the mint, some smaller club venue anyway. it might've been probots first gig since it was before the video and all that shit. supposedly lemmy was going to make an appearance and possibly even play, but although he was involved in that one hit song of theirs with the video, he wasn't involved on any other tracks and he was in now way part of the touring act, so this gig was special. well, to no one's surprise, a bunch of bls l.a. and san francisco chapter members came in, as well as zakk who came separatly, i might add, with friends. probot took stage and played five or six tracks and by this time all the bls guys were trashed and pissed since they hadn't seen lemmy yet. when lemmy's track came up and he wasn't there, grohl hopped up on the mic and tried to get zakk to come up and play. the guitarist was going to move to the bass and play lemmy's part so zakk could basically do whatever the fuck he wanted. the bls fans were totally for it, but zakk just smiled and said no and that was the end of it. they ended up playing the song normally with some tech filling in for lemmy. but some of the l.a. bls dudes started heckling grohl. they were chanting for lemmy, then for zakk, and when the song started they threw a few bottles up on stage, hitting the tech playing the bass and grohl stopped drumming. mark lanegen from qotsa and the screaming trees had been singing, and when he saw grohl get up he started telling the bls guys to settle the fuck down. grohl was yelling shit at them, but you couldn't hear what he was saying because he didn't have the mic. words were exchanged and grohl threw a drumstick at one of the guys and spit on him, all the meanwhile lanegan is calling the whole ordeal like it's a boxing match. the bassist and the guitarists are playing some weird shit kind of laughing at the whole thing. zakk eventually comes in from the side. he walks between the stage and the crowd where the bouncers are at and tells the bls guys to cut it out. then he gets up on stage and he's talking with grohl a bit. before you know it grohl is back behind the drums and zakk is strapped in to some gibson just tearing the place apart with a welcome to the jungle cover. all the bls guys are happy and the whole situation is defused until after the show. some of the bls guys who had been throwing shit at grohl somehow got behind stage insisting that they wanted to apologize to grohl for everything. meanwhile he's hanging out with zakk and by this time lemmy had showed up. some techs are around and the other guys in probot are there, but lanegen had already left. grohl was cool to the guys until one of them spit on him. grohl had been really trashed so he punched one of the dudes. zakk jumped in and pulled grohl aside trying to break it up. unfortunately grohl tripped over some cables on the floor and he thought zakk was trying to fight. grohl got right up and decked zakk, chipping on of his teeth and sending him down. zakk was like "wtf?" and ready to punch grohl until grohl hit him with a left hook and knocked his ass out cold. then probots own security jumped in and broke the whole thing off. it was all a misunderstanding and zakk and grohl put it aside, so there was never any real commotion to be made, but yeah, grohl knocked the fuck out of zakk wylde.
heavy metal motherfuckers!

it would seem that both Zakk and Dave have gotten over that, and it was an obvious misunderstanding. Saying Dave kicked Zakk's ass is a little out of context. I found it quite amazing that after what Zakk had to say about Dave a while back, that Zakk would even go to a show with Dave playing, let alone jump in.
and on the backing track thing, I agree to a point. I think it depends on what kind of music you play. if you play straight ahead rock and raw energy type stuff, like Foo Fighters play, than no backing tracks make sense. BUt if you play things with a lot of atmosphere and such, like Evanescence, you would HAVE to have backing tracks to be able to play the songs remotely close to the original. Or if you needed parts with more than one singer, and no one in the band is a singer, then backing tracks make sense. Having backing tracks doesn't meanyou can't change the way the song is done though, and it doesn't completely eliminate the ability to improvise. I guess it justs depends on what you play.

i'm not a fan of either Nirvana or Foo Fighters (go to: http://www.qtm.net/~geibdan/newse/foo/ , for a description of what a Foo Fighter actually is), but they have both written some good songs, though just not my cup of tea.
Anyway...
I agree with Dave on this, just like I agreed with his view on the Whole Metallica suing their fans & music sharing ( NOT PIRACY, Sharing) in general.
Prog-Metal/Hard Rock bands Like Rush, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, ect.. play very orchestrated music, so you may get some MIDI stuff when they play, however the band controls those, there is no one off stage making this happen, don't believe it? watch any Rush live video, Geddy uses Bass pedals when he is playing Keyboards & using MIDI, so yes I can live with that. But when you have a band that is not that complicated in their arrangements there is no excuse, for those of you who don't care, well then don't. But there are those of us who know what Metal/Hard Rock & all of the genres should be & using crutches is not an acceptable practice. It goes down the road of " Not Pulling Your Shit Off Live" & that might be acceptable in other styles of popular music, but it was always a scence of pride for any heavy bands to say that they were/are LIVE!
As for the T.V. performance thing, yes it is true that some shows won't allopw a band to play live, you can thank Bands like The Doors for making it that way. Yep blame those 60's & 70's bands so many of you say are crap, for pushing the envelope & being rebelious with their music & playing it the way the intended it to be played, & telling the powers that be to FUCK OFF!
All I know is, when fans of any form of Heavy music start saying they don't care what a band does on stage or behind the scenes, then this Art MAY BE LOST!
If Motley Crue (who I happen to like a lot of their stuff) Is thinking they are anything more than a DIRTY HEAVY BLUES BAND & need a crutch then they may very well be the next Aerosmith, & that my brothers & sisters in Metal Is a TRAGEDY!

Probot, That's a pretty badass album. I don't understand why he does foo fighters. He can play some pretty kick ass metal.

*yank, Thanks for the info. its cool they put it behind them.
**slayer_fucking_rules, I do agree with you on your point... " i heard pearl jam on 2 stations at the same time today. jesus christ that pisses me off. you know what i mean. "
I hate that with any band that the RIAA...oops, I mean the Radio Stations play on endless rotation & think they only wrote 5 songs in their whole career! I would rather hear all the other shit these bands recorded, wether I like them or not, these 5 songs are killin me.
& I do agree with the point about this "being Daves business to comment on this" I think there are bands who crossover with other styles of music & are more based in finesse than heaviness, but are still METAL that probably don't fall into this catagory. But for those who don't...
In a day & age where a band faking it is becoming a more gray area, when will a line be drawn on when it's too much? I would hate to see this become the "CGI" of the metal world.

has no clue what he's talking about- it's fine if backing tracks enhance the performance, but not be the basis of the performance themselves. LP from what I've heard, which thankfully hasn't been much, seem to base their stuff on the ability to back track... the crue...is hopeless and really just should hang it up and retire... but for those bands who don't use them...good job, cause at least when you play it's all you, and if you're off key or whatnot, it's cool. I prefer it when the music is a little more gritty, and torn around the edges like that...i dislike a lot of the overly polished shit...too corporate sounding...

Dave Grohl is a damn fine musician. Hell.. he recorded the first FF album by himself. I'm not a HUGE fan of FF but I can tolerate them if they're on. I remember Zakk talking shit about Dave when that shitty Ozzy CD came out because Dave wrote a song for it. There's a reason none of Zakk's shit was on that CD... it was all TERRIBLE!!! He peaked at No More Tears. Even Ozzmosis is fucking weak. I find it odd that Zakk would be at a Probot show knowing what he had said, but maybe he realised that Dave is a fucking damn fine musician and decided to give props. If anything, he deserved to get knocked the fuck out for running his mouth to begin with, but it's cool they diffused the situation and I'm glad it didn't escalate into anything more than that. Zakk got a shot in the teeth like he needs and that's that. For whatever reason.
Oh and Motley Crue sucks. Vince Neil is a fucking bitch. Tommy Lee is the man, Nikki Sixx is a zombie, and Mick Mars...um...look at the fucking guy...he's going to drop dead any second. Friend of mine saw them in LA and kept expecting someone to bring him an oxygen tank. If VN is SOOO upset about killing his friend, don't you think calling their box set "Music to Crash Your Car To" is a little out of taste?... No comment on LP...they speak for themselves.

Nikki Named that album, Not Vince!!! As for Dave talking shit, I guess if you get something going with the biggest band on the planet then you get your name out there more. Now get your ass over and help me bring them to my town if you dont want them. Sign my petition at www.theboneyard.thecybergrind.com and check out our unsigned bands like Inkognito, DrIvIn RaIn, And anyone heard of Piranah, Yep they are back together and you can hear them and meet them @ www.theboneyard.thecybergrind.com.
And for you in a band, enter our Battle In The BoneYard with your MP3's and let the Z95.5 DJ's hear you. They play a cut from the BoneYard everyday. They also have a sat. night show called Bone in your BackYard that fetures unsigned bands.
The BoneYard is only there too let bands be heard by someone that might play them. SO check it out! www.theboneyard.thecybergrind.com

Who the fuck he thinks he is??? Dave is NOT worth to talk about bands that survived for MORE than 20 years like Motley Crue and STILL kick ass!!!!!!!!! I like Nirvana and Linkin Park and I LOVE the Crues!!!!!! Dave can' t play drums like Tommy Lee or the guitar like Mick Mars and Vince! He can' t even sing like Chester!!! Besides, I' m 100% sure that in many shows he has played with pre- recorded tracks, just like NIN (I fuckin' HATE that asshole, Reznor!)!!! That motherfucker thinks he deserves a lot of respect because of Nirvana. Well he DOESN' T!!!!!!! Only Kurt did. Guys, accept it : Dave' s just an asshole!

He is jealous, or what? cry to your mum dave, if you have a problem, and let other bands play their shows like they want.
LINKIN PARK ROCKS! they have more succes than poo fighters, and more exciting music. f*** off wannabe audioslave band ,or what ever .
