CKY Frontman Slams ROLLING STONE Journalist Over CD Review

CKY guitarist/vocalist Deron Miller has slammed Rolling Stone journalist Jenny Eliscu over a scathing one-star review (out of five) of the band's latest CD, "An Answer Can Be Found". What follows is Eliscu's original review of the CKY album (which can be found online at RollingStone.com), followed by Miller's response, as sent to BLABBERMOUTH.NET. Jenny Eliscu ( Rolling Stone)'s review of CKY's "An Answer Can Be Found": "Perhaps the most noteworthy thing about CKY is the ardor of their fans, the CKY Alliance, whose bragging rights include having bombarded this magazine with pissed-off e-mails after we gave the band's previous album a two-star review. Here we go again. The presence of Bam Margera's brother Jess on drums may keep CKY aligned with the skate-punk scene, but 'An Answer Can Be Found' is mind-numbing stoner metal, with ginormous power chords, repetitive vocals and overwrought lyrics ('Invaded by a swarm of confliction'? Ex-squeeze me?). 'Don't Hold Your Breath', 'Suddenly Tragic' and 'The Way You Lived' all renounce suicide, which may be a case of CKY living down their name, which is short for Camp Kill Yourself. 'Why put the gun to your head if you're already dead?' singer Deron Miller asks on 'Suddenly Tragic'. One good reason: to drown out the sound of 'An Answer Can Be Found'." Deron Miller's ( CKY) response to Jenny Eliscu's review: "If Rolling Stone was ever a credible music magazine, it certainly no longer is. They actually paid some woman that calls herself Jenny Eliscu money to write a review of our new album that isn't even suitable for inclusion in a free high-school fanzine. She gives the album one star based on the behavior our fans (the CKY Alliance) exhibited after our last disc got two stars. They raided the RollingStone.com message boards demanding for it to be revised. How predictable, tiresome and unprofessional it is for a magazine of this stature to have Jenny Eliscu employed there as a 'journalist,' with her personal playlists only consisting of Top 10 platinum acts. Jenny actually uses the term 'ex-squeeze me' in her review after citing lyrics from our album that she just simply isn't intelligent enough to understand. This woman should be fired for this trash. I can be juvenile and 'clever,' too, Jenny. By saying things like ' Jenny's friends and family should know that she is an aging, ugly skank, and I really pray that she doesn't live too much longer'... Jenny Eliscu... no stars." CKY's "An Answer Can Be Found" sold 27,786 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at No. 35 on next week's The Billboard 200 chart.

rolling stone IS the same magazine that gave St. Anger a 5 out of 5, and everyone knows that album is a piece of shit. i havent heard the new CKY album yet, but i'd much rather listen to that than St. Anger. rolling stone is a magazine thats more about whats in and whats popular than whats actually good.

CKY does have some decent music but aren't that spectacular. I will admit to owning their first two records and that they are a pretty good band. For one thing, they don't really sound like anyone else. Who cares if they got a one star review. If people really like them then they will buy it reguardless. If not, then keep trying to make better music and forget the bullshit!

That rag never mattered anyway.
As for the new cKy album, I quit like it. Took several listens to sink in, though. It's not as immediate as the previous one.
And "Sniped" kicked my 30yo. ass across the room.
With that said, Deron - It's Rolling Stone! Who cares! They never liked KISS or Sabbath either, so you're in pretty good company dontcha think?

The only thing that RS has been any good for the last few years is for their softcore photoshoots with the likes of Jessica Simpson or Jessica Alba.......it certainly hasn't been about any music!
For what it is worth.....a 1 star rating may not be a bad thing.Rolling Stone has a long history of giving albums a bad review then after it becomes a hit they change their views.

Maybe they got one star because the CD sucks? Like it was said somewhere else, not everyone is going to like it. Personally, I wouldn't piss on it, but who am I? Hell, does anybody even READ the reviews in Rolling Stone anymore? 99% of them are some bullshit band nobody but whoever got the free CD at RS has heard of, and wouldn't want to hear about otherwise!

I really don't know anybody who is holding a review in their hand when they are headed to the record store to look for an album. So I don't really think this dude should worry about that shit. The CKY guy has a point in that the reviewer slammed the outer valence of the band and it's associations more than the songs. But hey it's part of sticking your flag up in the air to see who salutes. Not everybody will, but those who do, you should just say "thank you" and forget the rest.

...on both sides. rolling stone sucks. everyone knows that. in fact, the ONLY way to formulate and educated opinion on an album, is, (surprise) listen to it! unfortunately, there are a lot of dumb-asses who pay great attention to rolling stone, mtv, etc...and they base their buying power on that. however, they DID post the songs right there on the page, so one can make up their own mind.
whining about a bad review isn't going to score any points with anyone. i know cky is looking for that "next level" and a magazine like RS could really make or break 'em, but hey, these are the same losers who trashed almost every zeppelin album, so you're in good company.
i've heard the record, it's ok, in my humble opinion, which means as much as hers does, really. i think with cky, i know what i'm gonna get. it IS stoner metal. they really like that octave pedal. no big surprises. would i rather throw in a QOTSA album? sure.
her review did suck. no question. music is subjective; eye of the beholder. critical writing is not. to properly critique something, on must actually base their summation on the actual MATERIAL. she just goes off about their fans and the lyrics. ok, so the lyrics ARE material. but here's the funniest shit: when it comes to the music, she disses the "ginormous power chords"...well guess what? cky isn't nickelback. they aren't theory of a deadman. THOSE bands have ginormous power chords. poorly used, but THAT is power chord rock. cky is not. they looove that octave pedal; it's a LOT of single note lines.
so, basically, just have a listen to the tracks. i figure, that review is SO scathing, that people will actually be intregued. better than a 2 star review, which means they found it boring. at least she cared enough to slam you; free publicity!

I think what was once a great venue for CKY to gain exposure may be whats going to keep them from making it. They will forever be tied in with that wannabe rockstar and his "reality" show. Hey dickhead(Bam)...If your gonna act like your show is real, make sure that when the dvd comes out you dont include bonus footage that shows that the shit is all staged. (case in point, on the season one dvd you hear bam saying "hey phil, what else do you have that I can iron hamburgers on?".) Get new right guard extreme sport!!!.....fuck you

Uh...no i do not insult every band on here...i rarely post on this site anymore...I just found your comments very amusing....As this is not the first time i have heard about CKY crying about bullshit....My band?...well we could care less about a major label....OCTAGON plays blackmetal and do not really care what anybody happens to think...We get slammed all the time...But we believe in what we are doing and that is all that matters...Or first cd will be out this fall and we will get shit on by a lot of people, but we have been dealing with that for 5 years and keep going...maybe the guys in CKY should concentrate on their music and stop trying to make EVERYONE happy....life is a lot calmer that way. Also...Why is it that veryone thinks that success involves a MAJOR LABEL?....all that really is for most bands is a guarantee to be back on an independent in a few years...majors are just interested in gold and platinum album sales not the bands.

about CKY's music (heard a couple songs, can't remember them). But the most blatant thing here is that Rolling Stone could give two shits about music and care all the world about their image. Hats off to RS for using a band's piece of art (whether it is good or bad) as a personal platform to save face and mudsling all because a bunch of 15 year old jerk off fans crashed their inboxes after giving CKY's last album a less than favorable review. That's what you get for handing the pen over to some cock bitch who moonlights as one of those obnoxious music know-it-alls on the VH1 best of music that no one gives a fuck about shows.

Last album was great. This new album almost sounds like a bunch of left overs from the last album. I've only listen to the new cd a few times and it really doesn't do anything for me. Its just so blah. There is much more talent in this band then what is displayed on "An Answer Can be Found".

Again I think it's ironic that alot of these hacks who call themselves journalists can write a bunch of insulting crap about bands and their work, but then when a band says anything back about it, it's called "whining" and shit. They're entitled to their opinions about shit just as much as these fucking journalists.
Bands work their asses off to do what they do, and while the bands obviously realise that not everyone is going to like their music, they also have the right to speak their minds (like everyone here has the right to speak their minds) about other people's work. This notion that the media can say and do whatever the fuck they want, be as slanderous, uninformed and insulting as they want to artists, and the artists should just "shut the fuck up and play" is ridiculous. Bad reviews come with the territory, and artists do need to learn to deal with it, but they shouldn't be muzzled and told not to speak out about it either. Critics want to complain about the lack of talent in the music scene nowadays....I think the lack of creative and intelligent journalism nowadays should be equally noted.

That I find, here on Blabbermouth, a bunch of whiny message board posters dissing CKY fans for doing the same shit you guys do here, but on Rolling Stone's site, which is express yourselves when you disagree with somehting. Not to mention that most of you are trashing their music without ever hearing it, condemning them for their association with Bam et all. Honestly, I love their music, and because you all think of jackass and all that other BS when CKY's name comes, a lot of people are missing out on a truly great band. These guys are the only rock band in the last 5 years to come up with a genuinely new sound and style, rather than following all the crap musical trends you all love to hate (Nu Metal anyone?) Honestly, and this is coming from a guy who knows a lot about music old and new, and listens to the heaviest of the heavies while still opening my kind to different forms of music, whether it be rock or not. The bottom line is these guys are good, really good, and all I ask is that you give them a chance before you crucify them cause you hate prank videos, which by the way, rarely ever involved the band, with the exception of them providing the soundtrack. Listen to CKY!

I'm not entirely sure who CKY is. I mean, I heard their song in the Tony Hawk videogame. I thought it sucked. I figure I'd never hear from them again. Then, this Deron Miller guy shows up in the liner notes of my Gorguts CD; Huh? And whenever I hear about CKY now its always in the context of MTV /Jackass. What the fuck does CKY have to do with metal and why is this even news? What does Rolling Stone/MTV/Jackass have to do with music, anyway? Lame.

Rolling Stone has always been a crappy magazine, and this womans review is pathetic. She doesn't even really mention the lyrics but just disses A line of lyrics that is obviously over her head.
As for CKY I've never listened to anything beyond the first time but always thought it was pretty rad. His reply was actually really good right up untill he stooped to her level and got all immature. You should have just left it with you being the bigger person man.

CKY and all of its fans need to wake up and realize that not everyone thinks they are the greated band on the face of the earth. Never in my 36 years have i seen such a bunch of complainers. Who are the real children making comments on this?

I haven't heard the album, but the lines that she pointed out as an argument against the music really aren't that bad. If you're gonna pull out lyrics to support a one-star rating, they better be MUCH worse than those.

As for that 15 minutes comment. A band has to be mainstream and generally accepted by trendy little fucks [much like yourselves] in order to have 15 minutes of fame. I posted this in another Deron post and thought I'd post it here too. I haven't read all the comments in this thread so I don't know if any of this has been touched or not...
I'm not about to read through all of this nonsense. But I will take this time to set some shit straight.
Bam IS NOT a member of CKY.
CKY consists of: Deron Miller (vocals/guitar/bass), Chad I Ginsburg (backing vocals, guitar, bass, production), Jess Margera (drums)
Viva La Bam and Jackass have NOTHING to do with CKY the band.
In the case of which came first (the chicken or the egg?) in this case it's the band or the videos. The answer? The band.
Bam needed music for his skate/prank videos so CKY allowed him to use their music and Bam liked the name so he used that as well.
Hey, Bam also overly uses bands like Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, HIM, Queens of the Stone Age, and Rammstein and many more.
So you should slam those bands just the same if your only reason for hating on CKY is because of their association with Bam.
Don't like CKY, I don't care.
I am a fan of CKY, but my musical tastes span much farther than just CKY.
Live a little, broaden your musical horizons.
If you don't like CKY, fine.
But if you've never heard anything short of the songs played in the background of some Mtv show, you have no room to voice an opinion. If you've never heard anything by CKY at all, you have no right. And lastly if the ONLY reason you don't like CKY is because of their loose tie to Bam Margera you are sadly very ignorant.
Like CKY or don't like them. But be sure you have valid reasons on either side of the fence.

It's not about getting a bad review because someone honestly doesn't like your music so we're all pissed. It's the fact of how she went about her "review" if you can call it that. She so obviously had her mind set before hand to just bash CKY and All of us at the Alliance and did not even open her mind up once to sit and give a fair review of the album. She right away goes and pulls the Bam card. Like Tony said, Bam is NOT in the band. The only way Bam has anything to do with the band is being Jess's Brother and that he has used their music and what not. Deron has every right to defend his band. If she simply said she didn't like the album that would be fine. She's not the only one who's given a bad review before. Deron has every right to open his mouth and express what the fuck he wants back to her.
Someone says something about what you worked so passionately on and just tries to tear you down, you're telling me you're not going to say anything? An "emo" whiner wouldn't do anything but that, just sit their and whine about it but not say a thing.

First of all, some posts here have started with "I've never even heard CKY but..." If you haven't heard the band, you can't talk about it, it's that simple.
More importantly, the people slamming Deron Miller for being angry about the review are missing the point. He wasn't doing it because the album got a bad review; he did it because the review wasn't about the music. If you read it (before they pulled it from the site), about 3/4 of it speaks only of Bam Margera, and a past run-in with the CKY Alliance. Both of which have absolutely nothing to do with the album. Then it became evident that the reviewer didn't listen to much if any of the album, saying it consists mostly of power chords. Even if you don't like CKY, if you have heard them you should know better than to believe that. So what I'm saying is, it wasn't that it was a bad review, it was an unfair review.
On a final note, I would like to point out that since you all post on this site, you probably respect the opinions of the reviewers here, otherwise you definately would not be here. And if you didn't yet notice, An Answer Can Be Found recieved a fairly decent review. So if you're gunna slam the band and say they're absolute shit, that's fine. But be aware you are also saying that the review on this web site was a poor one, as the album shouldn't have got a score anywhere close to the 7/10, and the comments in the review couldn't be far enough from the truth.
I'm not raging war here, I'm just making a point.

One more thing. This is a quote from her review that was pulled:
"'An Answer Can Be Found' is mind-numbing stoner metal, with ginormous power chords..."
Even though power chords on the album are few and far between, Ms. Eliscu used it as a form of criticism.
This comes from the very same person who gave Simple Plan's new album 3 stars, and said this about it:
"there's hardly a track in the bunch that doesn't sound like a hit."

CKY are one of my favourite bands of all time because they stick to what THEY wanna do and its working for them. I picked up their new album and was blown away by their maturity musically, and just their growth. Some people dont understand where this band is coming from because simply, you are ignorant. Now you BM CKY haters, do you hate the band because one man stands up and shows his disgust against a reporter who has no clue? (Call me crazy, but all of you show your disgust on this website everyday, but dont get critisised for it, why should he?) Do you hate the band because they arent "metal", therefore, must be shit? Just grow up you haters. Deron, Chad and Jess are changing the music scene in a big way. They arent going to go away because they want to piss people like you off. ive seen most of you regulars to this site bash cky recently but ive held it in. well im tired of seeing it now. many of you wouldnt realize good music if it came up behind you and fucked you in the ass. you would enjoy it no doubt, but would be afraid to admit it because its not cool. which is exactly what you are doing now.

if you actually took time to sit down and listen to the many elements that are put into cky albums you would realize just how much work they put in, and for who? not for themselves for sure. but for us the fans. they do it to give us good music to turn to rather than listen to everything else thats "popular" today. thats why im proud to say I am a loyal and devoted fan to cky.

I myself am a big fan of CKY. I think that their music is some of the best that I have ever heard. tonydub made an excellent and educated point. I find it funny that people come to sites like these to bash bands they don't like. If you don't like them, why are you listening to their music. "cky sucks, cky is gay...". Why come come to a site and post something about a band you don't care about. I would never waste my time doing something like that.
There are bands out there that I absolutley hate. But you don't see me posting that I hate them cause it is a waste of time. I came to this site to defend bands that I like.
An earlier news story had Deron Miller criticizing people for making lame, immature comments like the aforementioned ones. He doesn't care about lame comments. He comes to sites like these and finds the comments praising his band because he cares about his fans and their opinions. He doesn't care about naysayers.
CKY's website has this amazing thing called "Ask CKY". Fans can come and ask questions about the band or praise them. Some even waste their time by trying to post negative comments about CKY. I have never seen a band have anything like that on their official website. CKY cares about their fans. Hell, I'm stationed in Iraq right now, fighting in OIF. Jess Margera has taken his time to send me emails asking how I am doing. You don't see that in any other band.
Here, Deron attacks that journalist for making a very poor, uneducated, and defaming review of the new album. If he wanted to make it even more serious, what she wrote is technically libel. For the many posters who don't know what libel is, it is to make derogatory statements in print. The legal definition is a little longer but that is the basic part of it.
People come on here saying that they sold out and that Bam sucks and they suck for letting him play their music in his show and whatnot. Bam is Jess's younger brother. He supports his brother's band because he likes CKY's music and he loves his brother. Jess supports Bam because Bam is a talented cinematographer, director and skater and he loves his brother. Bam has directed almost all of CKY's music videos.
I pick the music I listen to by going off the advice of members of bands that I like. I listen to the music and I form my opinion of it. If I don't like it, I don't listen to it and I move on. If I do, then I support the band by buying their records and giving them the means to keep recording good music. I don't go off of what MTV or radios play because they all get their funding by big corporations who decide what is trendy and what will sell best.
Basically, if you want to come to a site like this, that is dedicated to letting people post their opinions, do some research before posting. If you don't like a band, give legitimate reasons why you don't like them.

I've heard the album once but don't own it. I don't think it was all too bad and actually liked it. Although the lyrics seemed a bit weak as CKY's usually do, that really isn't what the band is about to me. I can't really say for sure what my opinion on this is as I've only given it one listen.
That review was terrible. Nobody should buy Rolling Stone because it's more fun and more productive to literally flush your money down the toilet.
You CKY zealots need to get your own opinions, and I mean fast. Any of you who are saying they're getting a bad review because they aren't as popular as other bands really don't know what you're talking about. As for those of you who seem to think that CKY are the best thing that has happened to music in years, you need to turn off the tv and start looking around for some better music.
