GRIM REAPER's 'Fear No Evil' Revisited In New WEEZER Video
- July 14, 2005
|
|
MTV.com is reporting that a cleverly re-edited version of the "Fear No Evil" video by GRIM REAPER, the semi-popular '80s British heavy metal band fronted by powerhouse vocalist Steve Grimmett (later of ONSLAUGHT and LIONSHEART), is the basis for the new clip from WEEZER, "We Are All on Drugs". In the video, the leather-clad rockers storm the stronghold of an evil wolfman and liberate his human slaves with the power of REAPER guitarist Nick Bowcott's axe and pug-faced frontman Grimmett's pipes. According to a posting on Weezer.com, the whole thing kind of started as a joke, and spiraled out of control from there. "This video (let's call it 'We Are All on Drugs V1.0') is a cleverly re-edited version of the 'Fear No Evil' video by GRIM REAPER," the post reads. "The video was prepared as an experiment and was immediately embraced as funny and strange — not a bad match for WEEZER. Mucho thanks and props to GRIM REAPER for letting WEEZER use the footage." The video is actually just "We Are All on Drugs" played over the REAPER clip, with a few edits made ( WEEZER frontman Rivers Cuomo's vocals now pseudo-sync up with Grimmett's mouth and his guitar solo now matches up with Bowcott's, etc.). According to WEEZER's label, Geffen Records, the GRIM REAPER version of "Drugs" will only see the light of day in "international" markets (i.e. the U.K. and Canada), and the band fully intends on shooting a proper video for the U.S.

Weezer has had some excellent videos. This should be great! I remember the "Fear No Evil" vid well. It's cool the Weezer acknowledges a band like Grim Reaper in a fun and reverent way like this. This sounds hysterical. I'm sure it will make its way stateside - online at least...

I'm pretty sure this more poking fun at Grim Reaper than anything else (laughing at them, not with them). So I doubt this is giving them "props"...

All videos of the 80's were bad. It's easy to make fun of any of them. Not so much the band but the video.
I mean it's odd that they even know who Grim Reaper was.
When the Guitar player was is Guitar magazine, it said in there that he was more fond of and grew up with metal bands in the 80's more the the Alt Rock of the 90's. He is even holding Eddie Van Halens Guitar in to cover shoot.
Did you ever see there "Weeztanic" shirt? It's pretty much a copy of a Slayer shirt.
They know what they are doing. Pop sells, and well? Good for them.

If any "guilty pleasure" of a metal band ever existed, Grim Reaper was certainly it for me. It's kind of weird to admit it, but to this day, I still play the "See You In Hell" tape I had in high school. If any band like this ever deserved some respect & attention, it is grim reaper, but apparently certain powers don't want it released here in America.
Man, this sucks. C'mon, Weezer-guys......reconsider & GET THIS THING RELEASED HERE!!
Oh well....can't wait to download it.

Metal fans just wait to rip on anything, huh?
Beverly Hills is a kickass tune. The album as a whole is strong. Where do you come up with 'the last album was good but the new one sucks'? It sounds like the same band to me, and since the songwriting is strong I don't see the problem.
Anyway, Grim Reaper is the ultimate guilty pleasure. Mega props for anyone associated with getting the video made.

Go here and click the songs link. The 1988 Avant Garde demo is a band Rivers was in pre-Weezer. He played lead guitar and wrote the songs. It's VERY metal.

That video plays a lot here in Canada !! The first time I saw it I caught it mid-song and I wasn't sure if there was a mix up in the sound or image, like I thought they wanted to play the Grim Reaper video but the sound was Weezer ! The video is cool but mainly because the Grim Reaper video itself is cool !! I love Weezer and I love Grim Reaper so it was a sure thing for me !! The thing is, there's not much editing done to the vid, there is but it's not like it's really matching with the song ! Yeah, you see the solo parts of the video being played at the same time but it's very loosely edited and the mouth never really matches but it's great just to see that Grim Reaper video again in regular rotation, LOL !! Good idea and good job Weezer and their last album is sooooo great...as always !!!

I saw the video on MuchLoud up here in Canada, and at first I thought "I don't remember this song being so light", and then as the vid continued, I thought "Ok, this is NOT Grim Reaper! This must be some audio/video fuckup". Then the title/artist came up on the screen, and I thought "Ah, ok that makes sense" and I laughed. I don't like the song though.
Cheers!

I can't believe I have Weezer to thank for this sudden resurgence of interest in Grim Reaper. Next week Virgin Steele and EZO will thank Ben Folds Five for their comeback probably.
That said, I've seen the video too and like the 2 posters before me I wondered if the audio people hit a wrong button or something. It's actually a good video but only because it's pretty much Grim Reaper's "Fear No Evil" the whole way through.
