DAVE GROHL Says There Was 'A Lot Of Dark Shit' In NIRVANA Before COBAIN's Suicide - July 18, 2005
Rolling Stone magazine recently conducted an in-depth interview with former NIRVANA drummer (and current FOO FIGHTERS frontman) Dave Grohl. An excerpt from the interview follows:

Rolling Stone: In his 1994 Rolling Stone interview, Kurt [Cobain] talked about your need for reassurance. You were popular in high school, played in all sorts of bands.... What was it about NIRVANA, or Kurt, that made you so insecure?

Dave Grohl: "When I joined NIRVANA I was the fifth or sixth drummer — I don't know if they'd ever had a drummer they were totally happy with. And they were strangers. There was never much of a deeper connection outside of the music.

"Krist [Novoselic] and Kurt had a legendary lifetime connection. Those guys were soulmates. They'd been through so much together, from Aberdeen to the success of 'Nevermind'. They fuckin' shared everything, and they were the kind of friends that didn't have to talk to each other — they just knew. I never really shared that moment with them because I came from such a different place, and within eight months to a year of being in NIRVANA, the band blew up into something that no one had expected. It was hard to connect with anybody when that happened.

"I don't think I've ever told anyone this, but there were times when Kurt was really unhappy with the way I played drums. I could hear him talking about how much he thought I sucked. But he'd never say it to me. If I'd confront him about it — 'Is there a problem? If you want me to leave, just ask' — he'd say, 'No, no, no.' Most of that happened later, around 'In Utero'. That's when I think Kurt became unhappy with what was happening with the band.

"Kurt was so many different things. He was funny or shy or this outgoing, larger-than-life persona. He could be sweet or he could be fucking wicked. He could be intimidating. I thought I was a decent drummer, but I didn't know if I was good enough to be doing this thing, this big deal. I didn't imagine myself a world-class drummer. I was the same fucking drummer that was in SCREAM, or playing on my bed. All the pressure....

"I can't think of one show that I ever played with that band where we walked offstage and said, 'That was great.' Never one. Only two times did I get any reassurance from Kurt. Once when I joined the band, in 1990, we were drunk at some disco in England, and Kurt came up and said, 'I'm so glad you're in this band. I'm so glad you're down-to-earth.' I was like, 'Wow!' The next time was in late '93 or early '94 when I came home and turned on my message machine and had a message from Kurt that said, 'Y'know, I was just sitting here listening to 'In Utero', and your drumming is so awesome. You did such a great job!' I was like, 'Wow!' Those two things were spread out by about four years [laughs]."

Rolling Stone: What was that last year like?

Dave Grohl: "You just never knew. There were times when the room was lit up with energy and happiness, and there were times when the vibe was like the fucking plague. The last year, being in that band was rough. There was a whole lot of dark shit going on. At that point I was living this wonderful, healthy life outside the band, but when I'd enter a band environment, that all changed. It wasn't a lot of fun. But when Pat Smear joined the band, it changed everything. We went from being fucking sulking dirtbags to kids again. It changed our world. He's the sweetest person in the world. He became really close with Kurt. There was laughter."

Dave Grohl is an incredibe musician, at times it does get to be a little too much when hearing about the guy, but that does NOT mean he is not talented. And comparing Stevie Ray Vaughan to Grohl is really stupid, it's not really the same style of music. Anyways, good interview.

only a person who listen to today's bs music that was created by an indestry who wanted control of what u listen to, can say cobain was overated.

the music today has no soul, its empty

u cant cover cobain, stanley or any of thoes guys that were really making music about their life and get away with it

most of all the 90s succesfull rock bands came from the streets
and into the mainstream, that changed in the mid 90s when bands were created by the indestry along with pro tools which totaly ruined the sound of the albums, well thats what u get

I can't believe (oh, wait... I can! This is Blabbermouth) what loser a-holes post such negative shit. Maybe there should be a rule that someone that posts negative/lame comments about musicianship should actually be a musician. And not one that just plays at a local bar or plays with his g-string in his parents bedroom. One that has actually done something. Otherwise, you have no right to fucking cry all the time! I mean, come on. You can hate a band-thats fine. But, you can also have a little bit of sense to think, "We'll, if 30 million people love(d) Nirvana, maybe they do have appeal for other people and maybe they did something groundbreaking". I hear shit all the time on the radio and still can understand why main stream people like it (like when there are talented people in the band that can write/arrange/produce music on a large scale). You can hate Kurt (I'm not a banner waving Kurt fan-I appreciated all that they did, though) but-ya gotta admit-they changed a lot in music. Have ya heard "Bleach" all the way through? That album ripped ass on most shit today. Most people don't understand what it's like to all of a sudden be a catrillionair overnight and be on the cover of every magazine. It's fucking hard to take. Mix in depression and drug-voila! A suicide that you can talk shit about on here... Ok, enough bitching... Go back to talking shit and listening to Blood Bath or Evil Doer, or whatever...

i sit and read every day ppl posting negative comments about blabbermouth and well they sit and read it!
#1 the guy never compared srv to dave grohl he compared kurt to him(which i thought was kinda dumb) but hey its an opinion!

#2 the stake through the heart of metal shouldve been implanted the first time we saw some dude with more makeup than any girl i ever saw got up and sang another fucking ballad!

#3 Dave Grohl is truly an amazing musician....id like to see one of you supposed metal fans get up and create the brilliant amount of chart topping music all on your fucking own and still kick back have a sense of humor and the willingness to let the world know that you are just doing what you love without needing recognition from punks who read blogs and then bash the blogs they contribute to!

#4 Kurt was a groundbreaker not saying he was brilliant but he did what came from his heart and it struck a chord! we were all fucking sick to death with the bands who were around at that time!

#5 The guy who mentioned some kind of monster you are absolutely right they havent produced a good fucking album since cliff died and they sit in mansions and bitch about poor ppl who steal their music aint fucking stealing lars! i lined your pocket with enough money that you fucking cheated me out of for years! 1 dollar to make a cd then charge us 20! fuckin lil prick! ok i vented!

bring on your inane insults and useless banter you have the same right i have! sharing an opinion with ppl even if noone agrees! thanx blabbermouth!

The main theme in this is that people are saying "well millions loved Nirvana" and yes its true, but in all honesty, as far as Cobain's skill on a guitar goes, he was about as good as the next average joe, if you can't play a nirvana song on guitar I want you to personally undo the string and wrap it around your neck and pull on each end.... Cobain was rated the 4th greatest guitarist of all time on VH1 which is absolute bullshit....

Just think of how hard it had to have been for him to change himself from a drummer, who rarely (if ever) gets any of the spotlight, into a frontman, who not only sings, but plays the guitar and writes as well. Nothing but respect for the man.

Okay, Nirvana did change the face of music wether or not you want to admit it. Was it for the best? Hell yes. I'm not defending him but Kurt was talented at writing songs that people liked. He was a sloppy player but that was his style. I for one am glad they came about because it killed off most of the makeup wearing bands and brought about aggressive music which is what I love. Dave has some talent but Foo Fighters isn't really my thing. Probot was cool though. Talent wise, Nirvana is completely overrated, the way they changed the entire spectrum of music is undeniable. Wether you like them or not.

Kurt's talent was in his songwriting, not his technical skill. He forced an entire generation of bands to either inject actual emotion into their songs or fade away. He made music human again, because it was becoming far too much product. Think about it...what's the difference between what Motley Crue sing about and what N'Sync sing about? And that's what people outside the genre were calling metal back then. Frankly, I can't think of one band that "grunge killed" (a ridiculous stretch for a causal relationship anyway) that anyone with taste misses. It didn't kill true metal, the press just stopped noticing. They weren't really noticing anyway. All the good bands were underground back then, and most of those bands are still here, still underground. What it did is kill pop metal, aka glam, or at least make it look silly and embarassing, which frankly it was. If not for Nirvana, or whoever would have done it anyway if they never existed, the media would still think of metal as Poison and Warrant, whereas now the media thinks of metal as Shadows Fall or Lamb of God. That's a gigantic leap forward as far as I'm concerned.

And on a completely different topic, I think I'll be getting that Lanegan album now. I checked out some clips on Amazon because I liked what Grohl had to say about it, and he was right.
