EDDIE VAN HALEN: 'Know The Man, Play The Music' Book Due In August - July 25, 2005
Backbeat Books has announced plans to publish a book dedicated to VAN HALEN's virtuoso guitarist Eddie Van Halen. Entitled "Eddie Van Halen: Know the Man, Play the Music" (view cover image), the book was authored by Malcolm Dome and Rod Fogg and is scheduled for release on August 29. It will retail for $24.95. A book synopsis reads as follows:

"Bursting out of Los Angeles in the late '70s, Eddie Van Halen and his eponymous band lit the fuse for an explosion of hard rock, heavy metal, and glam. Amid the band's bombastic attack, Eddie's unbelievable guitar pyrotechnics instantly elevated him to an icon and made him the most imitated guitarist since Jimi Hendrix. Now, Backbeat Books is excited to present 'Eddie Van Halen: Know the Man, Play the Music', from the new Fretmaster series that tells the story of musicians, their bands, and their playing.

"Kicking off with the group's beginning, Eddie Van Halen recounts each step of the band's career, from the Sunset Strip to the US Festival and Monsters of Rock tour. The book pores over Eddie's guitar style in expert detail, from Roth-era classics like 'Women & Children First' and 'Fair Warning' through the 'VAN HAGAR' years and right up to the 2004 reunion tour. Captivating vintage photos accompany an album-by-album critical analysis of the band’s music and Eddie's playing.

"Getting down to the business of learning his style, the 'Playing like Eddie' section features lessons on tapping, harmonics, rhythm, and other essential elements straight from the Van Halen trick bag. All of the exercises are presented in standard notation and tablature. To leave nothing in doubt, the included 32-track CD features all of the exercises, complete with backing tracks for play-along thrills. In addition, the book is conveniently spiral-bound so it lays flat on a table or music stand so readers can look at the exercises while they wail away on their guitars.

"Beyond the music, the authors devote an entire section on Eddie's equipment, including his amps, guitars, pickups, effects, and custom-made gear. Insider tips reveal how Eddie searched for (and found) his distinctive sound, from taking a chisel and soldering iron to a vintage Strat to dipping his pickups in wax and monkeying with his amp voltage to achieve his renowned 'brown sound.'"

The band ended after 1984.

Protects them from microphonic feedback. Pretty standard these days on even cheap stock guitar pickups, but I guess less common back in the days...

I've been playing guitar for 18 years, and it will be nice to (hopefully) have a comprehensive EVH guitar book.

what no stories on how dave found and made eddie the player he is? i mean that's how it all happened right? eddie could not have possibly been able to make it without roth rigth? i mean look what happened to the band after dave got canned they went nowhere and dave is on top of the world right? only in roth's and his delusional fans minds!Eddie was and still is the king of guitar and roth plays beer tents. a drunk eddie is still greater than roth ever was or will be. while it's sad to see him not caring about it right now at least he isn't some strong out junkie getting arrested and put on probation every other week. i hope he works things out with Sammy and they put out another great cd and tour as a reunion with roth would only benefit roth, but then again it might finaly show you roth idiots that dave is finished and can't do it anymore and prove once and for all it's not 1984 anymore, besides all you have to do is listen the worthless tracks he put out on the first vh greatest hits cd to know it's just not there anymore, sure the music was great but worse than weak vacals and stupid lyrics prove he is not close to Sammy as a vocalist for the band today, humans being and the tracks Sammy recorded on the newest best of package blow those roth tracks away and if you don't agree you are in denial just like dave.Sammy rules and dave drools!

I hated him before but after Eddie had to show his ass at DIME's funeral all I can say is Fuck Off to EVH.........I know he gave DIME a guitar and all that was probably a self promoting deal anyhow.

"Maybe the next VH reunion Dave will come back and instead replace YOU with the guitarist from Extreme. Nevermind, go back to your bottle you fucking drunk asshole."

I think I'd rather see that then that alcoholic EVH up on stage fuckin' up. I'll buy the book just for the guitar techniques, but if I want to read a book by a member of van halen I'll read my copy of Crazy from the Heat.

DLR rules!!!!!

Sounds interesting and I wanna see some of the excersises. I think the Van Halen brothers are idiots though. They keep ruining it for themselves. I would love to see a reunion tour with Dave but that won't happen.

This Backbeat Books release sounds alright if you're interested in playing guitar like EVH. Then again, it's been years since anyone plays in that style. To me, this book shoulda been released about 20 years ago!!!

I was over at the Van Halen Links, in their VH Forums, in their "Main Discussion" section, and I read a post by a dude who just completed a Van Halen book. It sounds amazing. It's a comprehensive look at their entire career and it even includes a tribute to Eddie Van Halen by, like, more than 100 of the greatest players on the planet. From Holdsworth to Wylde to Vai. I dunno man, but if that's true, shit, that sounds insane. I think they also said the foreword of the book was done by Brian May of Queen. Again, if that's true, WOW!!!

Shit, if all that is true, man, I know what book I'll be gettin', that's for sure.

I just got back from several VH sites. It appears this book is not authorized by Eddie. In other words, he had absolutely no involvement with the making of this book whatsoever!! Which, you know, could still mean it's a decent book.

But it's just not fair, or right, that the people who wrote this book put out a press release stating: "Eddie Van Halen recounts each step of his career" or whatever. He most certainly doesn't. Sure, it's his words...taken from old interviews he did throughout his career. In other words, he didn't step up and recount his career NOW. It's all excerpts from interviews he's done over the course of his career. That's not cool. The press release makes it sound like Eddie was involved in this...and he simply wasn't. Shame on these people.

I remember when David Lee Roth left Van Halen, and Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen. I had seen Sammy in Rockford IL the year before touring for his V.O.A tour, and he was dynamite (unfortunately I missed a chance to see Van Halen on their 1984 tour that same year – played at the same venue). I did see Van Halen at the Monsters of Rock show at Alpine Valley in East Troy WI - in 1987, and they were good. I remember all my friends saying that Van Halen was so much better with Sammy rather than Dave, and I thought that was just pure bullshit. I have noticed that many of you who posted on this board feel the same way I do about David Lee Roth being a better front man than Sammy. I am wondering if this is a new perception that has come about over the past 10 or 15 years, or if you folks felt the same way I did from day one (the reason I ask is because I remember being very alone in my opinion that Dave was a better front man). In closing let me say that if I walked into a room that had David Lee Roth sitting at one end of a table and Sammy Hagar sitting at the other, I wouldn’t be taking my Van Halen albums over to Sammy for autographs, I would defiantly want Dave to autograph them; however I certainly would want Sammy to autograph my Montrose albums!!

Your right, it is no longer 1984, but then again you were probably just a brown stain on your mothers mattress in 1984, and know little or nothing about it....Sammy is talented, Ed is a drunk fool, and David is semi retired (non of them are hurting for cash due to residuals they get for album sales – by the way the Roth albums have sold better as a whole then the Sammy albums, but no needs to go on welfare here).
